Value Promise Being elected by the Candler County Board of Education as district Superintendent has re-kindled my desire to lead and build capacity among all stakeholders. My experience has largely been in administration as an educator; however, teaching and developing leaders at all levels remains a great passion for me. I promise I will collaborate with all stakeholders on how we can realize our vision of significantly improving student achievement. I believe my experience as a principal for twenty-four (24) years, a leadership facilitator with FDRESA, our State Department and working in private practice with eight (8) school districts has helped me prepare for being the CEO of Education in Candler County. I promise to add value by doing the following: • Involve leaders at all levels with identifying lagging academic performance areas. • Process planning to eliminate implementation gaps. • Arrange for professional development for all certified teachers on standards-based classrooms. • Value results and relationships. I promise to surround myself and our organization with leaders who believe strongly in professional growth as well as persons who actively seek best practices. I am committed to our citizenry to build capacity within our district to sustain excellent results for student achievement in the next decade. I also promise to teach and coach process leadership with persistence. We are outperforming schools that are much bigger than we are and not nearly as rural. This takes hard work on the part of everyone - students, teachers, and parents - in order to accomplish these goals. In the science department we have also been blessed with continuity. In order to effect change, it helps if the same people stay around a while and work to build a good program. As a result, we have not only had great pass rates on the graduation test but also on our end of course tests.” Mrs. Twila Durden - MHS Teacher This achievement is the result of a lot of hard work and dedication by ALL of the MHS teachers, staff, and administrators. The Percentage of Metter High School Students Meeting and Exceeding Standards in the 2011-12 Year was 91.14%! This Percentage Reflects a Gain over the Prior Year of 8.66% Twila Durden is named WTOC’s Top Teacher Once again, a Metter High School teacher was spotlighted in WTOC’s Top Teacher segment as Twila Durden received a local nomination for the honor. The interview with Durden aired on WTOC News on April 18. “This is the first time I have ever been chosen,” said Durden, adding that her nominator chose to remain anonymous. “I would love for them to tell me so that I can thank them for the honor. “It is always an honor to be chosen by a student -- or it could have been a parent for all I know. As teachers, we don’t always know how we affect students at school, whether it is in a positive manner or not. We also do not know whether our efforts are enough for the students we teach.” “It is nice to know that someone thinks that I did enough and influenced them in a positive manner.” 2012 August Sunday Monday Conceive it, Believe it, Achieve it Tuesday Welcome Back Tigers! As evidenced by the 2012 Georgia Middle Grades Writing Assessment results, MMS students continue their winning ways on this assessment. Last year, MMS achieved similar results on the state writing assessment combined with a 100% pass rate on the Reading CRCT, exceeding not only all county area schools, but essentially all schools throughout the state. 8th Grade Writing Scores Are One of The Top in The Region! When compared to all nineteen school systems within approximately sixty miles of Metter, MMS ranked fourth in the percentage of students meeting or exceeding expectations and in average score. This achievement surpassed such nearby systems as Tattnall, Toombs, Vidalia City, Emanuel, and Effingham to name a few. We challenge our students with rigorous and extensive work. They respond by doing their best. Our goal is to always exceed the standards in our standards based classrooms, and we work toward this goal daily. “ Al Jones Eighth Grade Language Arts Teacher 81.44% Pass Rate on the 8th Grade Georgia Writing Test Ranks Metter Middle School in the Top 4 among 19 Area Middle Schools! 2012 September Sunday Monday Conceive it, Believe it, Achieve it Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Metter Middle School Eighth Graders Continue to Excel! 99.2% Met or Exceeded State Reading Average Saturday 1 “Teaching is meeting a challenge everyday. In 2011, MMS eighth graders continued to be highly competitive in our area. Our eighth graders last year had a higher average score than all but one area school. This comparative data includes about thirty middle schools within 45 miles. Significantly, about 5% of our students exceeded the state standards also putting us second in the area. To illustrate the significance of this achievement, the average eighth grade in our area had less than 2.0% exceeding the standards. Metter Intermediate School “MIS is a family. Metter Intermediate School Focusing on Literacy in Health & Physical Education At Metter Intermediate School we have adopted“Writing Across the Curriculum”within our School Improvement Plan. Even in Health & Physical Education our students have become accustomed to writing in Health journals and/or agendas on a daily basis. Our focus on literacy is tied into class every day. On any given day in our gym you may see Essential Questions being written and answered, RAFT (Role, Audience, Format, Topic) writing activities in small groups, or students creating booklets as a performance task describing skills with pictures and text of the current unit we are working on in P.E. “I feel that it is important for students to see the fundamental skills of sports in my class and practice them, but if we can expand their thinking and also have them write what they see and feel we are taking their experience to a whole different level.” -Eric Verbel, M.ED. Metter High School JROTC Tigers Lead The Way with a 98% Graduation Rate Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) cadets tend to become disciplined in their studies and goal oriented. The pride that these students display is amazing. You see it on their faces. Senior cadets are placed in teaching positions where they lead younger cadets. We expect our cadets to learn from their mistakes and not to make the same mistakes over and over. Teens struggling through a physically and emotionally turbulent time in their lives find help in the discipline, structure, accountability and influence of military-trained instructors. The MHS JROTC Program Contributed Greatly to the 2011 Overall 81.5% Graduation Rate Merry Christmas from Candler County Schools! 2012 December Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Conceive it, Believe it, Achieve it Friday Saturday Candler Schools Graduation Rate Among Highest of Area Systems Under the new ‘cohort’ rule established by federal regulation guidelines, Candler County’s 2011 graduation rate dropped about 4 percent, to 76.6 percent. But, Metter High Principal John Jordan reported, the news is not negative. In fact, the rate for MHS is almost 10 percent higher than the state average of 67.4 percent under the cohort calculation. Under the cohort rate, Candler County School System is ranked 10th in the 31-county Regional Education Service Agency (RESA). For comparison of other RESA systems, visit www.metteradvertiser.com. The state now requires school systems to use a cohort formula instead of the former leaver calculation. Under the leaver system, the rate was calculated based on the number of seniors beginning that school year who received their diploma at the end of the same school year. The cohort formula shows a percentage of 2011 graduates who entered ninth grade in 2007, counting out those students who transferred or otherwise left school, except those who dropped out. 2 3 4 5 10 EOCT MHS 11 EOCT 12 MHS MIS/MMS-Math Mania Night 6PM Board Workshop 8:00 16 17 Professional Learning No Students MHS MMS-2nd Nine Weeks Exams MHS-Senior Projects 6:00 9 EOCT 18 Professional Learning No Students 21st Century After School -Fashion Show MHS-Semester Final Exams MIS/MMS- Report Cards MES-Tom Engle Christmas Party & End of 9 Weeks & Report Cards 19 School Holiday 6 EOCT MHS City of Metter Lighting of the Trees MMS-2nd Nine Weeks Exams MMS/MHS-Band Concert 7PM MES-1st & 2nd Grade Turkey & Dressing 13 MES-A Bugz Christmas (3rd Grade) & MES Math Mania 6:00 Board Meeting 4:30 20 School Holiday 7 EOCT MHS 1 Candler County Chamber of Commerce Metter Ford Gala 8 MMS-2nd Nine Weeks Exams MES-Birthday Table 14 MHS-Semester Exam Make-Ups Early Release 1/2 Day for Students 15 First Semester Ends & Christmas Assembly 21 School Holiday 22 First Day of Winter 23 24 School Holiday 25 School Holiday 26 School Holiday 27 School Holiday 28 School Holiday 29 Christmas 30 31 School Holiday New Year’s Eve MHS JROTC One of Top 12 in State On Friday, April 27, the JROTC Tiger Battalion at Metter High School achieved once again the Honor Unit with Distinction, one of only 12 schools in the state to reach this achievement. After several hours of inspections in every area imaginable, the chief of the inspection team from 6th Brigade Cadet Command Headquarters gave the Tiger Battallion the news they had been working for. Honor Unit with Distinction takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and discipline. The battalion staff must deliver a well rehearsed briefing to the inspection team and each staff member has their section thoroughly inspected. Cadets are tested on the core academic subjects, ranks and chain of command. The color guard and drill team must deliver a flawless sequence used in state and national drill competitions. To qualify with the Honor Unit with Distinction, a battalion must earn 576 out of a possible 600 points, which is a unit rating of 96 percent. Metter Middle School “Every student can learn when given direction, consistency and encouragement. I hope to help them grow in their failures and thrive in their successes.” Mrs. Octavia Pryor, 8th Grade “Master Teacher” This achievement is the result of a lot of hard work and dedication by ALL of the MMS teachers, staff, and administrators. 88% of Metter Middle School 8th Graders Met Promotion Criteria to Begin High School The Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) measure the prerequisite skills needed to establish a foundation for 9th grade standards. With our hard work and dedication, we hope to have continued success as measured by the CRCT. 2013 January Sunday Monday Happy New Year! “You can learn new things at any time in your life if you’re willing to be a beginner. This year there were 129 first-time test takers that accomplished a 93 percent pass rate. First District RESA scored a 91 percent pass rate, and the state average was 93 percent. One of the Candler County School District goals is to be on or above the state on all mandated assessments. This is the second year in a row that Metter High School has met this particular goal. Last year, there were 97 first-time test takers who matched the state’s 95 percent pass rate and exceeded the RESA’s 94 percent pass rate. There has been a significant increase in the number of students who are staying in school and are performing on state level.“I am proud of the students and teachers,”said Principal John Jordan. “I am particularly glad to see that the literacy initiative is having positive results in all state tests, and particularly on the Georgia High School Writing Test.“All teachers at Metter High School are working diligently in their classrooms on higher order thinking questions and responses and reading and writing daily.“The Candler County School System has made a commitment to reading and writing across the curriculum, and it is helping students to become better thinkers, readers and writers.” Metter Intermediate School Metter Intermediate School Students Are Using State of the Art Technology in the Classroom “Technology is changing the way we teach our students; its impact on education is astounding.” Rebecca Turner, Ph.D. MIS Gifted Specialist Made Possible with a Grant from The Candler County Educational Foundation It is fascinating to see the world through the eyes of a child—especially when they are given the latest technology to enhance and expand their learning environment. My students have been provided with 9 Apple iPad2’s to use during class time for research, writing practice, enrichment activities, and class assignments. The students now have the world of knowledge at their fingertips, and they are very adept at accessing information by this means. We are so appreciative for the Candler County Educational Foundation grant and to the members of the Candler County community for their support of our Chili Supper Fund raiser, which helped us purchase the vital components of our iPad Project. MIS 4th and 5th graders are fearless when it comes to technology, and they continue to amaze me with their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. iPads differ from laptops and desktop computers in that we are no longer confined to a particular classroom. Thus, the casual observer may find us all over the campus actively engaged in learning. With iPads in hand , my students will be snapping photos, creating digital files, and searching the internet for information on anything and everything we find! 2013 February Sunday Monday Conceive it, Believe it, Achieve it Counselor Appreciation Week Tuesday Pre-K Registration February 11 - March 8 February 6-10 MIS/MMS-Hoops for Heart February 14 Wednesday Thursday 21st Century After School Valentine Dance at MES - Feb. 14 4 5 6 MHS-Registration Begins for Grades 9-11 10 11 12 Saturday 1 2 MHS-ASC Black History Month MHS-FBLA Blood Drive February 13th 3 Friday 13 7 8 MHS-Miss Metter High School Pageant MES-Spring Pictures Groundhog Day 9 MES-Birthday Table MHS-Registration Ends for Grades 9-11 & Asset Testing Grade 10 MIS/MMS-Hoops for Heart 14 15 School Holiday 16 MES-Valentine’s Day Parties MES-Spring Pictures 17 18 School Holiday Presidents Day 24 25 19 MHS-FBLA Blood Drive 20 Valentine’s Day 21 After SchoolEtiquette Dinner MIS-Parent Conferences Board Workshop 8:00 26 MIS-Parent Conferences 27 Family ConnectionsMeeting 11:30 @ Bevricks MHS-GHSWT Retakes Board Meeting 4:30 22 MHS-Freestyle Pictures & Sports Pictures & Spring Pictures Day MIS-Parent Conferences 23 2nd Annual Metter Math Mania 9:00 AM at MHS 28 Candler County Schools Talent Showcase 6:00-7:30PM Wilcox Auditorium Stacy McCranie Named PEC Teacher of the Year 2011-12 Stacy McCranie was named Candler County’s Program for Exceptional Children Teacher of the Year for 2011-12.
