PASTOR’S COLUMN
The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in my name, will teach you all
things and will remind you of everything I have
said to you. (John 14:26)
Yesterday over 100 young adults received
the Sacrament of Confirmation. After 16 years of
learning the Christian life, and after 2 years of
formal preparation for this Sacrament, they chose
to respond to the call of Jesus to full initiation into
the life of the Church. Through baptism they
began their journey of faith, and in Eucharist they
have been nourished by the grace of Jesus
himself in his dying and rising. Now, as the
Father did for the first disciples, he sends the Holy
Spirit on them through the name and the breath of
Jesus within them.
The Opening Prayer at the Confirmation
Mass provides the holy context of our celebration:
“Grant, we pray, almighty and merciful God, that
the Holy Spirit, coming near and dwelling
graciously within us, may make of us a perfect
temple of his glory.” Temples are sacred places,
regardless of religion and culture. Our language
today uses words such as “church”, “basilica,”
and “mission” for our sacred buildings. It is the
people who are temples of the Holy Spirit. St.
Peter uses a similar expression in describing us
as “living stones being built into a spiritual
house.” (1 Peter 2:5) Just as it takes many
stones to make a physical temple, it takes all of
us to build the spiritual house of God as we
worship in the church of St. Joseph, Placentia.
IN CELEBRATION OF
MOTHER’S DAY Roses will be given
as a thank you for your donation to the Obria
Medical Clinics on Mother’s Day weekend.

hope. Please consider
making a generous
donation and choose a thank-you rose for your
sweetheart, wife, mom, or grandma.

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
READINGS FOR THE WEEK
Jubilee Day for Youth
Monday:
This Sunday’s “Youth Jubilee” previews
July’s World Youth Day in Krakow. Its theme
from Matthew 5:7, “Blessed are the merciful,”
echoes Pope Francis’ warning that “the
practice of mercy is waning in the wider
culture.” In countercultural witness, therefore,
“the time has come,” says Francis, “for the
Church to take up the joyful call to mercy once
more. It is time to return to the basics and to
bear the weaknesses and struggles of our
brothers and sisters.” Jesus affirms the same
in today’s Gospel. “As I have loved you, so
you also should love one another” (John
13:34). Francis concludes, “The Church’s very
credibility is seen in how she shows merciful
and compassionate love.” Jesus too asserts,
“This is how all will know that you are my
disciples, if you have love for one
another” (John 13:35). Thus mercy “makes
young” the Church, the world, and everyone.
“Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new
life and instills in us the courage to look to the
future with hope” (Misericordiae Vultus, 10).

YEAR OF MERCY PRAYER
PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR THE
JUBILEE
Lord Jesus Christ,
you have taught us to be merciful like the
heavenly Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you sees
Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew
from being enslaved by money;
the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking
happiness only in created things;
made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us,
the words that you spoke to the Samaritan
woman: "If you knew the gift of God!"
You are the visible face of the invisible Father,
of the God who manifests his power above all by
forgiveness and mercy:
let the Church be your visible face in the world,
its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be
clothed in weakness in order that they may feel
compassion for those in ignorance and error:
let everyone who approaches them feel sought
after, loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us
with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy
may be a year of grace from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may
bring good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives
and the oppressed,
and restore sight to the blind.
May 21 is Wills and Trusts Week in the Diocese of
Orange. Our diocesan goal is to encourage all
parishioners to have an estate plan designed to
provide for the needs of their families. Please
consider attending one of the many free sessions
provided by the Orange Catholic Foundation.

muestra misericordia y amor compasivo”.
10).
