NOVEMBER, 27th: THANKSGIVING /
DÍA DE ACCIÓN DE GRACIAS.
American Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November. This year
Thanksgiving will fall on Thursday November 27, 2008.
El Día de Acción de Gracias americano se celebra el cuarto jueves de Noviembre.
Este año cae el día 27 de Noviembre.
THE MAYFLOWER PILGRIMS /
LOS PEREGRINOS DEL “MAYFLOWER”
Puritans were a religious group that created many political-religious problems
during Jacques I Stuard’s kingdom. The king allowed them, in 1.620, to settle in the
American new lands, recently discovered.
On September 6th, in 1.620, the Mayflower left from Southamptom port, to the
South of England, with a first group of puritans inside, who signed during the crossing
the “Mayflower Compact”, where they summarized the principles of the new society they
wanted to create when they arrived to America.
Los “puritanos” eran una facción
religiosa que llenó de conflictos políticoreligiosos el reinado de Jacobo I
Estuardo. Éste les permitió en 1.620
asentarse en los nuevos territorios
americanos, recién descubiertos.
El 6 de Septiembre de 1.620 salió del
puerto de Southampton, al Sur de
Inglaterra, el “Mayflower”, con un
primer grupo de puritanos, que
firmaron en plena travesía el
“Mayflower compact” o compromiso del
Mayflower, donde se resumían los
principios de la nueva sociedad que
pretendían formar al llegar a América.

EL NACIMIENTO DE LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS DE AMERICA
The ship arrived to the East coast of America, near Cod Cape, on December 26th. The
pilgrims founded a new settler, now Plymouth, in Massachusset. Later, new groups of
inmigrants arrived. They were the embryo of the United States of America.
El barco llegó el 26 de Diciembre a la costa este de América, cerca del Cabo Cod. Los
peregrinos fundaron un primer asentamiento que es la actual ciudad de Plymouth
(Massachusset). Con posterioridad, fueron llegando nuevas oleadas de inmigrantes que
fueron el embrión de los Estados Unidos de América.
THE FIRST THANKSGIVING /
EL PRIMER DÍA DE ACCIÓN DE GRACIAS.
Many pilgrims died on the ship or after arriving because of illnesses and hung. When the
first harvest was ready, there weren’t enough people to gather it. The Wannapoah
Indians, their neighbours, helped them and everybody had food. The settlers invited the
Indians to have dinner and thank God for the crops. This was the first “thanksgiving”, in
November, 1621. President Lincoln made thanksgiving a national celebration in 1863.
Muchos peregrinos murieron en el barco o después de la llegada debido a las
enfermedades y el hambre. Cuando llegó la primera cosecha, no había suficientes
personas para recogerla. Los indios Wannapoah, sus vecinos, les ayudaron y hubo
alimentos para todos. Los colonos invitaron a los indios a cenar y agradecer a Dios los
frutos. Este fue el primer día de “acción de gracias”, en 1.621. El Presidente Lincoln lo
convirtió en fiesta nacional en 1.863.
American families meet on thanksgiving and have a dinner: turkey, sweet potatoes and
pumpkin pie. It’s also the “harvest festival”: children take the best crops to school and
make a display. They make “corn dolls.
Las familias americanas se reúnen este día y cenan pavo, patatas dulces y pastel de
calabaza. También es la fiesta de la cosecha (en los medios rurales): los niños llevan
frutos a la escuela y hacen una muestra. Fabrican muñecas de las panochas del maíz.
