of all time, the complete Star Wars saga
was recently released on Blu-ray.

Welcome to ‘Olly the Little White Van’ Alan Titchmarsh
Comes for
Breakfast
“Olly the Little White Van” is a CGI
animated series featuring Olly, his driver
Stan and the distinctively drawn and
colourful inhabitants of a town called
Bumpton. Music and dance sequences
feature throughout the series.
To get a feel for the energetic and eager
main character Olly, imagine a playful
golden retriever puppy, voiced by Justin
Fletcher, CBeebies’ “Mr. Tumble.”
“Olly” is the first series to come to
market from Ideas at Work, which
was founded by children’s advertising
specialist Henry Becket and debuted
on CiTV and ITV1 in June. Parthenon
Entertainment is the distribution partner
and Hornby is the master toy partner. The
British toy firm will launch its range of
toys in spring 2012.
The Olly property is making its debut
at Brand Licensing Europe to attract
more partners to the growing licensing
programme which is supported by existing
social media campaigns and trade and
consumer public relations. Later this year
the company will announce promotional
partners, a father and child targeted
campaign and a smartphone app.
The UK’s favourite gardener,
Alan Titchmarsh, will be the
guest of honour at the ITV Studios
Global Entertainment stand this
morning for a breakfast reception
to celebrate the next chapter of the
merchandising programme for the
star and his new ITV gardening
series, “Love Your Garden.”

Sony is Turning the World
Blue Again
Blithering Broomsticks!
It’s Winnie the Witch!
The Smurfs is fast approaching
$500 million dollars in global
box office sales and outside
the US it’s now the highest grossing
live action children’s movie starring CGI
characters of all time.
With nearly 500 licensees around the
world, The Smurfs property pervades every category of merchandise
including toys, games, apparel, accessories, publishing, interactive
games and house wares.
And there’s no sign of the Smurf machine stopping.
The TV series is on-air throughout Europe, the brand is 50-yearsold and Sony has announced a second film for release in summer
2013.
Sony Pictures
Consumer Products,
which is here at Brand
Licensing Europe
this week, is talking
to partners about the
licensing programme for
the second film. Look out
for some new additions
to the Smurfs family.
On to the show floor this year flies Winnie the Witch,
the eccentric, colourful and unusual character created by
Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul, and published as picture
books and books for young readers by Oxford University
Press.
Some 3.5 million books have been sold as Winnie readies
to celebrate her 25th birthday in 2012. The licensing will
be managed by Metrostar, which introduced Dear Zoo to
the licensing market last year.
Madcap Winnie and her black cat Wilbur are drawn in a
highly distinctive, busy style and Metrostar is looking for
partners to make puzzles, games,
apparel, stationery, greetings,
plush and dress up.
“I think literary brands are still
underrepresented and when they
move into licensing the products are
generally gorgeous,” says Clare
Potter, managing director for
Metrostar. “Retailers understand
the value of books like Winnie the
Witch and they appreciate just how
much love and craft have gone into
them and made them so strong.”
Retail Mentoring Programme:
Buyers Learn More Licensing
Around a meeting table in the UK last month, the mentees
participating in the second Brand Licensing Retail Mentoring
Programme got to hear from industry insiders about the nuts and
bolts of this sometimes complex industry.
Claire Shaw, formerly of Classic Media, explained the practical
application of royalties and other licensing fees before Fisher
Forensic’s Rafi Saville put them into a formal context, explaining
key clauses and identifying things retailers should watch out for in
a standard licensing contract. A very fruitful discussion took place
about style guides, led by Abi Williams and Oliver Dyer from Skew.
Julie Quirke then explained how a pre-school series, in this case
“Everything’s Rosie,” evolves from the first animation sketches to
actual product on shelf.
The seminar was designed in response to buyers’ specific

information about the
methods, the terminology
and the quirks of the
licensing industry.
Ten junior and assistant
buyers from Mothercare and
Sainsbury’s have completed
the 2011 Retail Mentoring
Gemma Parlow, buyer, Sainsbury’s
Programme, which started
in the Spring and also included placements with licensors and
specific research projects such as sourcing new properties or
looking at new business models.
The programme is open to retailers again in 2012.

Trend Watch: Keeping up with the Girls
At Brand Licensing Europe 2010,
everyone in the aisles was looking for
girls’ properties and the trend appears
to continue into 2011. At a recent retail
seminar run by Brand Licensing Europe,
buyers said they were still looking for girls’
properties.
Europe’s top license last year,
according to NPD, was Hello Kitty but
there doesn’t seem to be anything eager
to follow. On the show floor this week
you’ll find
lots of girls’
properties
seeking to fill
the perceived
gap in the
market. But
is there an
obvious
winner?
Should
we expect
girls to back just one horse?
The giants of the girls’ market are
all here this week: Hello Kitty, Disney
Princess and Barbie, as well as My Little
Pony, Littlest Pet Shop and Winx Club.
Lalaloopsy, Puppy in My Pocket and
Monster High are newer on the block.
Saddle Club has yet to gain traction in
the UK but is popular in France and
Germany and appeals to the universal
rule that young girls love ponies. But
if you don’t think these will cut the
mustard (and you can ask NPD about
that) look out for some others.
From left field comes the publishing
property Winnie the Witch and the
Scandinavian Pippi Longstocking–two
more spirited and spectacular characters
you couldn’t hope to find. Fatina Dreams
has a rich and on-the-button backstory and
a prolific and celebrated designer behind
it. Licensee Gemma has created its own
Gem Fairies property,
which evolved out
of a successful
greeting card
range. “Mia
and Me” is
a new CGIlive action
hybrid from
m4e about
unicorns
and elves.
And the list
goes on…

It’s The Year of the Rabbit for Plus Licens with MMK
Plus Licens is presenting the
Japanese publishing and design
property MoshiMoshiKawaii this
week and is hoping to build on the
momentum started by the publication
of MMK books across Europe.
MMK features small, stylised
rabbits, each of the same basic shape
but never identical because they love
dressing up. MMK was originally
a good luck charm, one of the most
popular of which is the Strawberry
Rabbit, representing love and care.
There is a MMK rabbit for every mood
or feeling. The property has evolved
into a publishing concept in which the
fun is to find or recognise your Moshi
amidst a complex pattern.

Walker Books has reported strong
MMK sales from UK high street chains
and supermarkets. The titles are
published in France by Dragon d’Or
and Editions Milan, ZNU in Belgium
and the Netherlands and by Rabén &
Sjögren and Carlsen in Scandinavia.
In Spain, Ediciones B will publish the
first title Where is Strawberry Moshi?
in October.
In the US, the books are published by
Candlewick Press and have launched at
Urban Outfitters. MMK deals in place
include with CEACO for puzzles in the
US and Albi for stationery in the Czech
and Slovak Republics.
Plus Licens represents MMK across
Europe.

Star Wars is
Europe’s Top Toy

Star Wars is the best selling toy

countries so far this year, with sales
up 28 percent on the same period in
2010, according to the latest research
from the NPD consumer panel.
Germany has nearly half the turnover
and the UK about one quarter.
“The results have largely been
driven by kids aged 5-8, who
account for more than half the total

perhaps the best loved “Postie” will be

First shown on BBC One in 1981,

older kids aged 9-14 whose purchases
were up 57 percent on last year. This
success can mostly be credited to the
Star Wars’ range from LEGO and its
extraordinary continuous renewal.
“Through July 2011, more than half the
turnover for LEGO Star Wars in Germany
was generated by new products,
launched in the last 12 months,”
continues Tutt. “This ensures plenty of
opportunities for an even increasing fan
base of collectors. With new and updated
content coming in 2012, the force is sure
to remain with Lucas for a long time.”

BRB Kicks Off Kambu
Licensing in Europe
Creative Licensing Corp. Brings
Classic and Action Properties
BRB Internacional will
outline the licensing plan
for the Kambu property this
year.
“Kambu,” which launches
on air on the Spanish public
children’s channel Clan
in December, follows the
adventures of a little dog
that wants to make friends
with everyone. The Kambu
character is very tender and
naive, but also a total disaster.
Kambu is already a merchandising phenomenon in South
Korea. BRB Internacional will present the property to the
European market for the first time.
Among the many products on offer are radio toys, MP3s, textile
products and back-to-school supplies.
This week BRB will also announce the European TV premiere
of “Canimals,” which is based on the adventures of cute modern
characters shaped like tin cans. Tomy is the master toy partner
in Europe.
Creative Licensing Corporation has brought a host of action and
classic British film properties to show.
At the CLC stand find the Terminator property, which celebrates
the 20th anniversary of the film Terminator 2: Judgment Day. CLC
has a limited edition set of $5 face value coins from Coin-Invest
of Lichtenstein, construction toys (Best-Lock), contact lenses (Edit
Wholesale) and apparel.
New licensees are signed on from around the globe for
the Rambo property. Barcrest has a Rambo slot machine,
boxed consumer games come from Reef Entertainment and
PartyGaming will feature online slot games. Other new products
include figurines, apparel and theme park attractions.
For the first time, CLC is licensing Kurt Russell’s character
Snake Plissken from the film Escape from New York.
Other properties at show from CLC include Ealing Classics
such as The Lady Killers, The Lavender Hill Mob and The Man in
the White Suit; Hammer Films properties such as Dr. Jekyll and
Sister Hyde, Horror of Frankenstein, Lust for a Vampire and Scars
of Dracula; British Productions film properties such as Aces High,
The Dambusters and The Third Man; and Dr. Who and the Daleks,
the original 1965 colour motion picture.

Grani’s licensing plans for 2012 include work with

‘Everything’s Rosie’ Series
Launches in Spain and the UK
V&S Entertainment exhibits at Brand Licensing Europe for the first
time this year with its pre-school series, “Everything’s Rosie.” The
series targets the girls’ market very distinctly and is proving to be a
big hit in Spain (where it’s known as “Todo Es Rosie”) as well as in the
UK where it debuted on CBeebies last May. Series two began airing in
May of this year and a third series is in production now.
Vivid Imaginations is the master toy partner and Giochi Preziosi will
distribute toys in Spain. There are 20 other licensees now signed.
At Brand
Licensing Europe,
V&S will meet
retailers and
international
licensees to
outline its plans
to support the
recent international
product launches. It
also intends to secure the next phase of products such as outdoor toys
and party goods.
The Everything’s Rosie property stands out amid her friendly circle
of characters. Rosie is instantly recognisable by her multicoloured
hair and her positive outlook. The bold and bright colour palette and
sunny optimism of the series are making a strong impression in Spain
where the show airs on RTVE.
The Spirit of the Dakar
The Dakar
(originally known
as the ParisDakar Rally)
has fascinated
competitors for
almost 30 years.
It’s an endurance
race across the
toughest terrain
that includes dunes, mud, grass and rocks demanding
exceptional off-road capabilities. Up to 500 miles are
covered each day and typically 80 percent of contestants are
amateurs.
First launched in Africa, the Dakar now takes places in
South America, where it attracts 5 million spectators and is
broadcast to 190 countries.
The Amaury Sports Organisation (A.S.O.), the organiser of
the Dakar (as well as other top sporting events such as the
Tour de France) is at Brand Licensing Europe to explain the
licensing opportunities for this astonishing endurance event.
“Beyond being an impossible to avoid and unique event
in the motor racing world, the Dakar is also a unique
human experience,” says Carole Roquigny of A.S.O. “The
rally’s history, the performance of some and struggles of
others remind each of us that the Dakar is above all else a
sentimental and emotional affair.”
Saddle Club is Off to a Canter in Germany
Eight new deals have been signed in Germany for “Saddle
Club.” The signing marks the beginning of a licensing programme
managed by GLAM on behalf of Zodiak Kids, the European
licensing agent for the brand.
“Saddle Club” debuted in Germany on ARD in April and on KIKA
in August to enthusiastic ratings. Horse
riding is one of the favourite sports of girls
aged 8-12, and Saddle Club has enjoyed
huge success in France.
In Germany, Universal launched the
first video in September. Deep Silver
is the video game partner and Blue
Ocean will launch a bi-monthly Saddle
Club magazine for the first quarter of
2012. Ravensburger is the new German

games and will launch books for spring 2012; Bayer will produce
plush for the first quarter of 2012; KV&H Verlag will produce
calendars and school agendas for the second quarter of 2012;
Goldbuch is launching stationery and notebooks this autumn; and
CTI is the new home textiles licensee, its first products launch for
January 2012.
“We are thrilled by this launch which
comes on the heels of the French success,”
says Patricia de Wilde, senior vice
president of consumer products for Zodiak
Kids. “There are many opportunities
still to come and we look forward to
discussions at BLE with licensees who
are interested in working with us to
maximise the full potential of the Saddle

Chupa Chups Creates a
Colourful ‘Life Less Serious’
Little Princess Live on Stage
in 2012
Have you been to the Chupa Chups stand? It’s a blaze of colour,
summing up everything about this brand and its flavour and fun.
The Chupa Chups brand extension programme generated $65
million at retail worldwide last year and this is its debut at Brand
Licensing Europe.
This year it will present the latest Chupa Chups style guide, under
the leitmotiv: “life less serious.”
Launched in 1958, Chupa
Chups is now the world’s
No. 1 lollipop and is equally
as focused on its lifestyle
brand. It’s a rare example of
a brand that started in the
kids’ market but progressed
to target the teen consumer.
Chupa Chups also had
recent success with apparel
for young men, drawing on
the heritage and retro styling of the brand.
Recent signings for the Chupa Chups brand include SICEM
International Srl, official supplier to OVS/Coin, for apparel in
Italy; Play by Play in Spain for plush and gadgets; and Teo Jasmin
for home décor products in France and Benelux. Licensee Cool
Think Licensing has launched the Chupa Chups online store in
Spain following its huge success launching hoodies and t-shirts
in Pull&Bear this year. Fluid World, which was appointed as UK
agent earlier this year, has signed Fashion Lab for apparel for teen
girls and young adults including a capsule collection of men’s tees.
Cosmetics and toiletries will launch from Poolebeck next year.
Zodiak Kids has
announced the launch
of a Little Princess live
tour to begin in February
2012. “Little Princess–I
Want to Celebrate!” will
be presented by M4
Entertainment, BOS
and PW Productions and will embark on a five month tour
of major UK theatres. The show is adapted and directed by
Miranda Larson and will star each of the characters from the
TV series and books, with puppeteers for Scruff and Puss.
In “Little Princess–I Want to Celebrate!,” the King, Queen,
Admiral, General and even Chef and Maid have all invited Little
Princess to tea, and Little Princess has said “yes” to everyone
even though she cannot possibly be at each party at once.
Children will be invited to join in with Little Princess and all
her friends as they discover the best ways to celebrate together.
Zodiak Rights has signed a deal with Fabric Flavours to
produce Little Princess t-shirts and nurserywear to launch
later this year.
“We are thrilled with how the Little Princess brand is
performing and excited to be working with Fabric Flavours on
the roll-out of our first apparel range which will be in stores
later this year,” says Jennifer Lawlor, senior vice president
of consumer products for Zodiak Rights. “The new theatre
production brings Little Princess even closer to her fans and
2012 will be an exciting year for the brand with a new Aurora
plush range launching and more announcements to come.”
Caroline Mickler Presents Zoodorable
CopCorp has appointed Caroline Mickler as the agent for its
Zoodorable brand in the UK and Ireland.
Zoodorable is a new character brand from pop artist and
illustrator Han L. Lee, creator of the Bobby Jack brand.
Zoodorable launched in the US at the beginning of 2011 and
US licensees include Berkshire Fashions, FAB*Starpoint, H.E.R
Accessories, Hybrid Promotions and License 2 Play, among others.
Caroline Mickler will be looking for potential partners for the
brand this week at Brand Licensing Europe.
Munich-based Team! Licensing has been appointed to manage
Zoodorable licensing in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Joyeux Anniversaire Babar!
Nelvana celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. With it
the Canadian animation and merchandising company brings
the celebration to London with new seasons of “Babar,”
“Adventures of Badou,” “Beyblade” and “Franklin and Friends.”
Nelvana has also announced worldwide broadcast deals for
comedy shows “Sidekick,” “Scaredy Squirrel” and the liveaction series “Mr. Young.”
Babar, which turns 80 this year, will feature in
December in the Toy Gallery at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs
in Paris. The history of the Babar books will be celebrated
with 100 original illustrations from the Bibliothèque Nationale
de France and The Morgan Library in New York City. Along
with photo archives, the exhibition will display items such as
plush toys, games, action figures and toys on wheels from as
early as 1930, along with contemporary licensed products.
The exhibition will pay tribute to Babar author Laurent de
Brunhoff who succeeded his father Jean de Brunhoff in 1941.
Could Unicorns be the Next Big Thing?
m4e presents its live action/CGI hybrid “Mia and Me” at Brand
Licensing Europe this week. The master agent is m4e AG.
The series’ style is inspired by the paintings of
Gustav Klimt. With a production budget of €8.5 million,
producer Lucky Punch has been able to produce what
it hopes is feature film-quality animation.
Each episode contains a framing story in live action that centres
on 12-year-old Mia who is just starting out in a new boarding
school. Mia reads about the land of Centopia in an ancient book
of myths. Now, because of a high-tech portal designed by her
father, she finds herself hurled into this world of elves, unicorns,

dragons. But the kingdom
p
is in conflict. Thanks to
her unique ability to
communicate with
unicorns, Mia
must personally
safeguard the

school and life as a fairy tale elf, Mia becomes the key to
saving Centopia. The series is targeted at girls ages 6-10.
“Mia and Me” will premiere in spring 2012 on KI.KA
in Germany. Canal+ in France, RAI in Italy and TVI
in Portugal are also confirmed broadcasters. German
licensing partners already on board include Egmont for
publishing; Panini for stickers, a magazine and DVD;
Schmidt Spiele for games; and Belltex for home textiles.

Wallace & Gromit are ‘Best of British’ for 2012
Aardman Rights will present the “Best of
British” style guide for Wallace & Gromit
this week, a trend direction that reflects
the nation’s pride in the two claymation
characters and the forthcoming
celebrations for the London
Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond
Jubilee.
UK licensing manager Rob
Goodchild says the response from
licensees has been “brilliant” and
there are some typically fun new
deals for bespoke “Best of British”
products including a Wallace &
Gromit “Best of British” toaster and
toasted sandwich maker from Swan,
slippers from Rainbow Designs and
Huntley and Palmer biscuits.
“There’s always been a real sense of
British pride with Wallace & Gromit,”
says Goodchild. “With two such
significant British events occurring next
year, it was an obvious step for us to
create a style guide to maximize such
an opportunity. We’re pleased to have
already inspired so many great new
lines from partners.”
Aardman Rights has also secured
a deal for Wallace & Gromit to use
its “Best of British” credentials in
collaboration with Chocolate, a high
quality apparel retailer based in
Hong Kong. Window display mannequins
of the pair will promote apparel ranges
for autumn/winter 2011 and spring/
summer 2012.
Lisle International Signs Pampered Girls
Lisle International Licensing will present its new signing,
Pampered Girls, at Brand Licensing Europe this week.
Pampered Girls is a Lifestyle Licensing International brand
that already has 60 global licensees and partners. Its
designs are sophisticated, whimsical, bold and trendy
and intended to reflect the joyful energy of the brand’s
target audience–girls and youthful women of all ages.
Lifestyle Licensing International has built the
brand around the world for six years and now
has its sights set on the European market.
“Europe holds many lucrative opportunities
for prospective licensees for our rapidly growing
brand,” says Dean Berko, president, Lifestyle
Licensing International. “Other territories have
set the stage with initiatives including a chain of
Pampered Girls retail stores and boutiques in Japan.”
Pampered Girls’ core categories are apparel, bags, luggage,
stationery, bath and body, home fashion, accessories and jewellery.
