In The Big Interview, Roffman will discuss his work with the Star Wars brand, the keys to its longevity and the plans for its future. Roffman will also share his unique insight into what it is like to work with the “force” and to unite three generations of fans. Mark Dinning, editor of Empire magazine, will interview Roffman. Welcome to ‘Olly the Little White Van’ Alan Titchmarsh Comes for Breakfast “Olly the Little White Van” is a CGI animated series featuring Olly, his driver Stan and the distinctively drawn and colourful inhabitants of a town called Bumpton. Music and dance sequences feature throughout the series. To get a feel for the energetic and eager main character Olly, imagine a playful golden retriever puppy, voiced by Justin Fletcher, CBeebies’ “Mr. Tumble.” “Olly” is the first series to come to market from Ideas at Work, which was founded by children’s advertising specialist Henry Becket and debuted on CiTV and ITV1 in June. Parthenon Entertainment is the distribution partner and Hornby is the master toy partner. The British toy firm will launch its range of toys in spring 2012. The Olly property is making its debut at Brand Licensing Europe to attract more partners to the growing licensing programme which is supported by existing social media campaigns and trade and consumer public relations. Later this year the company will announce promotional partners, a father and child targeted campaign and a smartphone app. The UK’s favourite gardener, Alan Titchmarsh, will be the guest of honour at the ITV Studios Global Entertainment stand this morning for a breakfast reception to celebrate the next chapter of the merchandising programme for the star and his new ITV gardening series, “Love Your Garden.” 8 www.licensemag.com 19 October 2011 ENTERTAINING KIDS EVERYWHERE! It’s Winnie the Witch! The Smurfs is fast approaching $500 million dollars in global box office sales and outside the US it’s now the highest grossing live action children’s movie starring CGI characters of all time. With nearly 500 licensees around the world, The Smurfs property pervades every category of merchandise including toys, games, apparel, accessories, publishing, interactive games and house wares. And there’s no sign of the Smurf machine stopping. The TV series is on-air throughout Europe, the brand is 50-yearsold and Sony has announced a second film for release in summer 2013. Sony Pictures Consumer Products, which is here at Brand Licensing Europe this week, is talking to partners about the licensing programme for the second film. Look out for some new additions to the Smurfs family. On to the show floor this year flies Winnie the Witch, the eccentric, colourful and unusual character created by Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul, and published as picture books and books for young readers by Oxford University Press. Some 3.5 million books have been sold as Winnie readies to celebrate her 25th birthday in 2012. The licensing will be managed by Metrostar, which introduced Dear Zoo to the licensing market last year. Madcap Winnie and her black cat Wilbur are drawn in a highly distinctive, busy style and Metrostar is looking for partners to make puzzles, games, apparel, stationery, greetings, plush and dress up. “I think literary brands are still underrepresented and when they move into licensing the products are generally gorgeous,” says Clare Potter, managing director for Metrostar. “Retailers understand the value of books like Winnie the Witch and they appreciate just how much love and craft have gone into them and made them so strong.” Retail Mentoring Programme: Buyers Learn More Licensing Around a meeting table in the UK last month, the mentees participating in the second Brand Licensing Retail Mentoring Programme got to hear from industry insiders about the nuts and bolts of this sometimes complex industry. Claire Shaw, formerly of Classic Media, explained the practical application of royalties and other licensing fees before Fisher Forensic’s Rafi Saville put them into a formal context, explaining key clauses and identifying things retailers should watch out for in a standard licensing contract. A very fruitful discussion took place about style guides, led by Abi Williams and Oliver Dyer from Skew. Julie Quirke then explained how a pre-school series, in this case “Everything’s Rosie,” evolves from the first animation sketches to actual product on shelf. The seminar was designed in response to buyers’ specific 10 www.licensemag.com 19 October 2011 requests for more information about the methods, the terminology and the quirks of the licensing industry. At a recent retail seminar run by Brand Licensing Europe, buyers said they were still looking for girls’ properties. Europe’s top license last year, according to NPD, was Hello Kitty but there doesn’t seem to be anything eager to follow. On the show floor this week you’ll find lots of girls’ properties seeking to fill the perceived gap in the market. But is there an obvious winner? Should we expect girls to back just one horse? The giants of the girls’ market are all here this week: Hello Kitty, Disney Princess and Barbie, as well as My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop and Winx Club. Lalaloopsy, Puppy in My Pocket and Monster High are newer on the block. Saddle Club has yet to gain traction in the UK but is popular in France and Germany and appeals to the universal rule that young girls love ponies. But if you don’t think these will cut the mustard (and you can ask NPD about that) look out for some others. From left field comes the publishing property Winnie the Witch and the Scandinavian Pippi Longstocking–two more spirited and spectacular characters you couldn’t hope to find. Fatina Dreams has a rich and on-the-button backstory and a prolific and celebrated designer behind it. Licensee Gemma has created its own Gem Fairies property, which evolved out of a successful greeting card range. “Mia and Me” is a new CGIlive action hybrid from m4e about unicorns and elves. MMK was originally a good luck charm, one of the most popular of which is the Strawberry Rabbit, representing love and care. There is a MMK rabbit for every mood or feeling. The property has evolved into a publishing concept in which the fun is to find or recognise your Moshi amidst a complex pattern. 12 www.licensemag.com 19 October 2011 Walker Books has reported strong MMK sales from UK high street chains and supermarkets. The titles are published in France by Dragon d’Or and Editions Milan, ZNU in Belgium and the Netherlands and by Rabén & Sjögren and Carlsen in Scandinavia. In Spain, Ediciones B will publish the first title Where is Strawberry Moshi? in October. In the US, the books are published by Candlewick Press and have launched at Urban Outfitters. This success can mostly be credited to the Star Wars’ range from LEGO and its extraordinary continuous renewal. “Through July 2011, more than half the turnover for LEGO Star Wars in Germany was generated by new products, launched in the last 12 months,” continues Tutt. “This ensures plenty of opportunities for an even increasing fan base of collectors. Up to 500 miles are covered each day and typically 80 percent of contestants are amateurs. First launched in Africa, the Dakar now takes places in South America, where it attracts 5 million spectators and is broadcast to 190 countries. The Amaury Sports Organisation (A.S.O.), the organiser of the Dakar (as well as other top sporting events such as the Tour de France) is at Brand Licensing Europe to explain the licensing opportunities for this astonishing endurance event. “Beyond being an impossible to avoid and unique event in the motor racing world, the Dakar is also a unique human experience,” says Carole Roquigny of A.S.O. “The rally’s history, the performance of some and struggles of others remind each of us that the Dakar is above all else a sentimental and emotional affair.” Saddle Club is Off to a Canter in Germany Eight new deals have been signed in Germany for “Saddle Club.” The signing marks the beginning of a licensing programme managed by GLAM on behalf of Zodiak Kids, the European licensing agent for the brand. “Saddle Club” debuted in Germany on ARD in April and on KIKA in August to enthusiastic ratings. UK licensing manager Rob Goodchild says the response from licensees has been “brilliant” and there are some typically fun new deals for bespoke “Best of British” products including a Wallace & Gromit “Best of British” toaster and toasted sandwich maker from Swan, slippers from Rainbow Designs and Huntley and Palmer biscuits. “There’s always been a real sense of British pride with Wallace & Gromit,” says Goodchild. “With two such significant British events occurring next year, it was an obvious step for us to create a style guide to maximize such an opportunity. We’re pleased to have already inspired so many great new lines from partners.” Aardman Rights has also secured a deal for Wallace & Gromit to use its “Best of British” credentials in collaboration with Chocolate, a high quality apparel retailer based in Hong Kong. Window display mannequins of the pair will promote apparel ranges for autumn/winter 2011 and spring/ summer 2012.
