TRIVOCIS THREE VOICES… STUDENTS, PARENTS, FACULTY OCTOBER 2012 VOLUME 60, NUMBER 2 MENLO-ATHERTON HIGH SCHOOL 555 MIDDLEFIELD ROAD, ATHERTON, CA 94027 WWW.MABEARS.ORG n (650) 322-5311 To the Menlo-Atherton Community Welcome again. As I mentioned last month, it’s a great time to be a Menlo-Atherton Bear and I’m so glad to have you as part of the M-A family. As the year begins in earnest, everyone starts to settle into more typical school routines. We have finished balancing classes and making schedule adjustments, and teachers have fully eased students into their classes. The pace and intensity of instruction has also picked up; students are being assigned homework regularly and will tackle projects and other larger assignments shortly. Progress report grades for the first quarter will be entered September 21. 2012–13 quick facts Age of principal: 42½ Main feeder schools: Belle Haven, Chavez, Garfield, Hillview, Kennedy, La Entrada, McNair, and Willow Oaks New teachers: 9 Returning teachers: 96 Total staff: 162 Ninth grade class: 563 students Total enrollment: 2011 students Newest buildings: Digital Media Arts, Library, Gym, and Performing Arts Center Oldest buildings: A, B, C, and D wings Original campus: opened September 23, 1951 Adjustment and challenges Every student experiences challenges at some point during his or her four years of high school. Here is some simple advice if your child is struggling or feeling a little down: Ø Encourage your student to speak with his or her teacher(s) about homework, tests, or any other area of struggle. (Try your best to let your student practice self-advocating first; intervene with a parent conference only after he or she has made an effort.) Ø Suggest that your student visit his or her guidance advisor. (Again, your e-mail or appointment should come only afterward.) Ø Counseling services are available on campus through StarVista. You may refer your child directly to them, or students can make appointments on their own. Contact Rachael Venezia at 322-5311, ext. 5186. Her office is located in the guidance wing. Ø Sit down each evening to review your child’s school planner and assignments. Make a game plan for how your student can approach and accomplish assigned work and readings. Download progress-report forms at http://www.sequoiadistrict.org/domain/256. New and noteworthy Senior Hanna Berggren was featured in the PBS documentary Broadway or Bust, a three-part series that followed sixty students as they competed in the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City. Physics teacher Jeff DeCurtins has embraced a new assessment system. Students’ grades will be based on the set of skills they have mastered by the end of the semester. Students are able to retest on skills they may not have mastered early on but have achieved later in the semester. For a given skill, an earlier (lower) test score will then be replaced by (not averaged with) a later test score. During the semester, a student’s posted progress will itemize which skills have been mastered and which still need work. The new Digital Media Arts Building was dedicated Thursday evening, September 6. The festivities featured executives from Facebook, the donor of $96,000 for the video studio computers, and M-A alumnus and Facebook executive Grady Burnett. District Superintendent Lianides was present, as were Trustees Carrie Du Bois, Olivia Martinez, Allen Sarver, and Allan Weiner. Wishing everyone great success this year, Matthew Zito, principal Estimada Comunidad de Menlo-Atherton Bienvenida de nuevo. Espero que todos tengan un buen año, CH OLARSHI P DERATIO N AL FE IFORNIA S Matthew Zito, director C California Scholarship Federation Sign up October 29 to November 2 during lunch. TriVocis October 2012 3 From the PTA Challenge Day is one of the most significant activities each freshman goes through. Most emerge from the day having a newfound realization that some of their classmates, independent of background, have the same problems, issues, and challenges they have. Freshmen have the opportunity to talk openly in a safe setting about what is bothering them and to hear others discuss their issues, fears, challenges, and hopes. It gets deep. Challenge Day professionals lead the day’s activities, but they depend on over two hundred volunteers to lead the all-important small-group discussions (away from their own child, of course) and perform other essential work. You are urged to participate in two eye-opening days, November 5 and 6, both for you and for the freshmen. All parents, not just freshmen parents, are allowed to participate. Please write [email protected] to sign up or ask questions. The committee chairs, Lisa Deal and Irene Searles, are happy to provide any and all information. See the additional article about Challenge Day on page 5. One of the under-the-radar PTA activities that will occur shortly is the approval of Mini-Grants. Teachers submit grant requests for classroom equipment, books, conference registration fees, and so on, with the goal of improving productivity in the classroom. With a limited budget, the PTA has to choose among the many worthwhile requests. The fall mini-grants will be discussed at the October 9 PTA General Meeting, 8:45 am, PAC cafe, so please plan to attend. Kristin Smith and Nancy Kessler once again lead this valuable effort. Please look for other PTA events in this issue of TriVocis, including Grad Night for the seniors and Parent Education. As always, the PTA invites you to join for the $10 membership fee. That fee along with other donations and Fashion Show fundraising has allowed the PTA to spend about $100 per student, and we expect to do the same this year. To join, go to http://www.mabearspta.org/DonateOnline.html. On Back-to-School night, Principal Zito concluded his “Introduction to M-A” by urging parents to contact the PTA presidents with any questions, concerns, or issues about M-A. Please do so by emailing [email protected]. We want to hear what’s on the parents’ minds. We hope to see you at the next PTA General Meeting, Tuesday, October 9, PAC cafe, 8:45 am. Karen Fryling and Brian LaPorte, co-presidents ELD Tutoring It’s not too late to join our tutoring team! English Language Development tutors will begin the week of September 24. Do you have two hours a week to help tutor students who are trying to learn English? The ELD program has students from many different countries and it varies from year to year, but the majority of our students speak Spanish as their native language. M-A’s Hispanic Outreach Initiative program received the very prestigious Apple Award last year for its achievements in engaging Hispanic parents and families in their children’s education. Because of this great success, the program will be emulated by schools across the state! You do not need foreign language experience. The ELD teacher will give you a plan for each class meeting. You will work with a maximum of two students, with the goal of helping them improve in spoken and written English. Over the course of a semester, you will get to know them and see their progress. We tutor on block days: Wednesday, third period, 11:15 am to 12:55 pm Thursday, second period, 9:40 to 11:20 am If you are interested, please e-mail [email protected]. 4 October 2012 TriVocis Freshman Challenge Day November 5 and 6 ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Challenge Day is coming soon to M-A for the ninth year, and we still need volunteers! This freshman event, which kicks off our year-long “Be the Change” program, is sponsored by the M-A PTA with support from the principal, teachers, and administrative staff. All incoming freshman will participate in this lifetime experience. Our goal is that at the end of the day, students not only will have bonded as a class, but also will have torn down old stereotypes and become inspired to live, study, and work in an environment of compassion, acceptance, and respect. Since 1987 the Challenge Day programs have touched the lives of over half a million teens nationwide. In fact, Challenge Day is the subject of the popular TV series If You Really Knew Me and was featured on the Oprah show, in the book Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul, and in the Emmy-winning documentary Teen Files: Surviving High School. Challenge Day is a powerful, high-energy program in which youth and adult participants are guided through a series of experiential learning activities. The overall goals of the program are to increase personal power and self-esteem; to shift negative peer pressure to positive peer support; and to eliminate the acceptability of teasing, violence, and all forms of oppression. The Challenge Day programs are designed to unite members of the school and to empower them to carry the themes of the program back to the greater school population. And it works! In the poignant words of a past parent volunteer and small-group facilitator, “I do believe that each time they see each other, it will remind them that they are not alone in their difficulties. I saw repeatedly throughout the day students realizing they are not the only one with various struggles. Then I saw their peers reaching out to assist.” WE NEED YOU! Adult participation is crucial to the success of these two days! The freshman class will be divided so that half attend each day, and we are looking for over 175 adult volunteers to help with this event. You can volunteer either Monday, November 5, or Tuesday, November 6. Volunteer positions include small-group facilitators for 4–5 students (8:15 am to 3:30 pm), registration (8:00 to 9:15 am), lunch servers (11:00 am to 1:00 pm), or tear-down crew (3:15 to 3:40 pm). Everyone is welcome, whether you are a parent of a freshman or of an upperclassman. This is a great place to volunteer with students where you can make a real difference. Please take the time to help and be the change in the lives of our M-A teens in this awesome way. As previous participants, we can promise you that you, too, will walk away a changed individual. To volunteer for any position, please e-mail us at challengeday@ mabearspta.org, specifying the position and time for which you wish to volunteer. If you are the parent of a freshman, please also provide your student’s first and last name. Irene Searles and Lisa Deal, PTA cochairs, Challenge Day 2012 Visual and Performing Arts Save the date! The Choir/Guitar Cabaret Night will occur Friday, November 16, in the PAC café from 6:00 to 9:30 pm. You will be treated to great performances by singers and bands, with refreshments being served. Suggested donation: $10 for adults, $5 for students. Look forward to other exciting shows and performances during the school year, including the second annual Bear Art Expo during Open House on April 25, 2013. TriVocis October 2012 5 2 012 – 13 B OA R D Our Annual Campaign Begins in October In October, the Menlo-Atherton High School Foundation for the Future annual giving campaign begins. For twenty years, parents and friends of the Foundation have supported excellence in education at Menlo-Atherton High School by donating generously. To sustain M-A’s exceptional academic opportunities and curriculum this school year and into the future, we have committed to raise an inspiring $1,750,000. With the help of our donors, M-A students will benefit from: Smaller class sizes—We will fund additional sections of key academic subjects effectively reducing class size in over 150 English, Social Studies, Math, Science and Foreign Language classes; Excellent teaching—We will fund professional development programs, enable departmental collaboration, and provide incentive awards for outstanding teachers and staff; Enriched curriculum—We will support important courses such as AP Environmental Science and AP Calculus BC, and key electives such as Journalism, Digital Photography, and Leadership; College and career success—We will pay for 2 Guidance Counselors, expanded hours for the College Advisor, an assistant for College & Career Center, and SAT prep classes; and Critical programs and services—We will provide vital funding for the summer Honors Institute, a Student Support Coordinator, a Parent Education Coordinator and more. M-A STUDENTS THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! "School so far is great! The classes that I have aren’t hard. I like my classes because in each one there is at least one person from the Honors Institute. In a very special event, Kepler’s Books and the M-A Parent Education Series present Madeline Levine at M-A on Thursday, October 11, at 7 pm in the PAC. Dr. Levine will address parents on her bestselling new book, Teach your Children Well: Parenting for Authentic Success. Psychologist Madeline Levine brings together cutting-edge research and thirty years of clinical experience to explode once and for all the myth that good grades, high test scores, and college acceptances should define the parenting endgame. Parents, educators, and the media wring their hands about the plight of America’s children and teens—soaring rates of emotional problems, limited coping skills, disengagement from learning—and yet there are ways to reverse these disheartening trends. Teach Your Children Well acknowledges that all parents want successful children. However, unless they are clear about core values and the parenting choices that are most likely to lead to authentic, and not superficial, success, they risk raising exhausted, externally driven, impaired children who believe they are only as good as their last performance. Madeline Levine, PhD, is a clinician, consultant, and educator; the author of The Price of Privilege; and a cofounder of Challenge Success, a project born at the Stanford School of Education that addresses education reform, student well being, and parent education. This event is FREE to the public and sponsored by Kepler’s Books, the Menlo-Atherton PTA, and the Sequoia Healthcare District. Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be offered. REGISTER AT menloathertonmadelinelevine.eventbrite.com. Kepler's Books will have copies of Teach Your Children Well for sale at the event. Or buy the book online at http://www.keplers.com/book/9780061824746. For more information, write [email protected] or call (650) 868-0590. Tickets will go quickly for this event! Charlene Margot, program director CELDT for English Learners During the first weeks of October, M-A’s English Learners will be doing their annual state assessment, the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). Please discuss the test with your children, let them know that it is important, and be sure they arrive at school ready to do well. The CELDT can be important to the students for two reasons: it may affect their placement in classes for the following year, and they can exit from the English Learner program by scoring either “Early Advanced’ or “Advanced” on all four CELDT tests and also earning a 325 or higher on the STAR English exam in the spring. To complete the CELDT, English Learners will take listening, reading, and writing tests during the first week of October during their English classes and then, the following week, they will take a speaking test in the library. The state will send results to students’ homes in January. TriVocis October 2012 17 Middle College “Preparing for college success is more complicated than it seems.” In his recent book, College Knowledge, David T. Conley begins with the insight above and goes on to explain the four keys to college and career readiness: Key cognitive strategies: The kinds of thinking—such as analysis, interpretation, and problem solving—that college faculty have consistently identified as required for college-level work. Ø Key content knowledge: Foundational content and “big ideas” from core subjects that all students must know well. Dr. Conley’s research indicates that writing may be the single academic skill most closely associated with college academic success Ø Key learning skills and techniques: The skills and techniques that successful students reliably demonstrate, such as persistence, awareness of one’s performance, goal setting, self-efficacy, time management, and study skills. Ø Key contextual knowledge: The transition knowledge and skills needed to move beyond high school, such as knowing which high school courses are needed for admission to college (for example, the UC A-G curriculum), understanding college-level expectations, knowing how to interact with professors and college peers, and understanding how to navigate college as a social system and learning environment. Ø This year close to a hundred students are learning how to make the transition to college through the Middle College program. They will earn their SUHSD diploma as well as college credit, which in many cases will transfer to UC and CSU, enabling them to begin college ahead of their peers. Since Middle College started its school year in mid-August, the three high school teachers have been preparing their students for post-secondary success, focusing initially on the last two keys. During the orientation week, students heard from a college counselor who discussed the various college certificates and degrees available and the steps they need to take to earn a college degree. A Middle College graduate shared his experiences, advising students how to behave in college classes and describing how college professors are different from high school teachers. Closing the week, a college professor advised students when, how, and why to meet with professors during office hours. In their College and Career Readiness class, students shared organization strategies and learned how to glean important information from their college syllabi. The teachers shared a variety of note-taking strategies and helped students set time-management goals. In addition to helping students make the transition from high school to college, the Middle College teachers are spending the first eight weeks helping students improve their writing skills. Students are writing multiple drafts of essays and sharing their work with peers and their teachers for feedback. For more information about Middle College, please go to canadacollege.edu/middlecollege or call (650) 306-3120. 18 October 2012 TriVocis Guatemala with Global Visionaries Summer 2013 Student info meeting: October 4, room E4, during lunch Parent meeting: October 18, room D22, 6–7 pm Send your student to participate in community service and build leadership skills. Teams will be hard-pressed to match last year’s success at M-A, when thirteen teams finished first in the PAL or SCVAL, three teams were runners-up in the CCS Finals, and the wrestling team produced two individual CCS champions. 2011–12 Menlo-Atherton champions PAL champions (girls) PAL/SCVAL champions (boys) CCS runners-up Varsity volleyball FS volleyball Varsity water polo FS water polo FS soccer Varsity track FS cross country Varsity soccer FS basketball Golf Varsity swimming Varsity track Varsity lacrosse (SCVAL) Football Volleyball Boys’ soccer CCS individual champions (wrestling) Andre Delagnes Kendra Wiley These championships are due in part to the wonderful support of the M-A community. Last year the Athletic Boosters raised more than $115,000 through donations and the annual Big Bear Run. This money was used to help teams pay for items not supported by district funds. Grants included stipends for assistant coaches, athletic trainers, uniforms, timing systems, and equipment. Donating in 2012–13 The need for the 2012–13 seasons is no different. Thank you to all the families who have already contributed to this year’s teams. It is not too late to join our growing list of donors by making an online donation at the Boosters Web site (http://www.m-aboosters.org/donating-is-easy). Funds raised will once again be used to support all our athletes. Coaches from all sports are submitting requests for items needed by their programs. How many of these requests can be met is all dependent on the donations we receive. Welcome, new coaches We welcome all the new coaches to M-A athletics. This fall, the varsity and FS volleyball teams are under the direction of Ron Whitmill and Meghan Douglass, respectively. Giovanni Napolitano is heading up the FS boys water polo team, while Kat Jacobs and Kate Lynn Roberts are coaching the cheer and dance teams. Kevin Trang serves as the new athletic trainer, helping all of our athletes stay safe and healthy. This winter both varsity basketball teams will be lead by new coaches: Mike Molieri will be pacing the boys, while Morgan Clyburn will lead the girls. Finally, in the spring Bowen Dunahoo-Kirsch will be joining the lacrosse team as the new FS boys coach. We look forward to supporting all of our coaches and the more than nine hundred student-athletes who represent our school. Go Bears! Students who are found to have used or to be in possession of any illegal substance will be escorted from the event. Parents/guardians will be notified and will be asked to pick up the student. Ø In addition, students will be subject to further action by the administration, which may include prohibition from participating in other activities. Ø No smoking will be allowed by anyone in attendance. Ø PLEASE ACT RESPONSIBLY! 22 October 2012 TriVocis M-A’s Own PSAT/SAT Prep It’s not too soon to begin enrolling your junior student for one of the two SAT prep courses that “M-A’s Own PSAT/SAT Prep” offers during second semester. In fact, we already have some students enrolled. We will also accept those few seniors who have lately decided to take the SAT. We can waitlist some sophomores whose sports during the fall of junior year will keep them from prepping for the important PSAT—although we dislike the learning gulf between late spring and October, when the PSAT is given. The first course is to get ready for the March SAT, the second for the May or June SAT. The prep for March is more popular as it avoids interference with all the mandated and voluntary testing going on late in the semester. As always, we meet on campus from 3:30 to 5 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays for five weeks, ending the week the SAT is given. The five-week course has been our format since we began in 1980, and it has been successful in teaching the proper techniques for taking both the SAT and the PSAT, as evidenced by our longevity. All we need is a student who is motivated to take the course. Our fee ranges from $100 to $225, depending on the number enrolled. The fee includes all materials necessary for the course. Once a student is seated on the first day, the parent is responsible for payment. Remember our mantra: As good as the best, and better than all the rest. Jane King, director The Shadow Program at Menlo-Atherton High School “Home of the Bears” When choosing a high school, a student can learn a lot by visiting a prospective school for a day. Our Shadow Program gives students the opportunity to experience a day at M-A. Shadow Days are currently being scheduled for the potential M-A class of 2017—current eighth graders only. To schedule your child’s Shadow Day, please go to www.mabears.org, the “Parents/Community” tab, and “Shadowing” for a Shadow Request Form and answers to frequently asked questions. Once you have completed your Shadow Request Form, please send it to Lorry Orcutt at [email protected]. She will schedule the shadow date and send you confirmation. You will receive a reminder e-mail one week before the scheduled shadow date, and your student will receive a call from his or her assigned host. The available dates are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The shadowing window is November 12 to March 8. We book visits for our traditional six-period days, including minimum days; we do not book visits on block days (most Wednesdays and Thursdays). For families who miss our shadowing window, we will be hosting campus tours at 5:00 pm and 5:30 pm before our spring Open House on Thursday, April 25. If you have questions once you have read the information on our Web site, please contact Kelly Todd, shadow coordinator, at [email protected]. TriVocis October 2012 23 Leadership Student activities roaring back with PRIDE The student leaders at M-A are proud to be back to school and have been busy planning events for this year. Currently, our focus is returning with PRIDE (Patience, Respect, Integrity, Determination, and Empathy) and planning events to kick off the year, generating spirit and enthusiasm. Club Rush: After a successful club training on September 13, we are looking forward to seeing all of our clubs at fall Club Rush during lunch on September 28 on the PAC patio. Each club will host a table, looking to entice prospective new members by giving information about the club. All M-A students are welcome to come and learn about all the clubs M-A has to offer. Please encourage your students to stop by. Future Bears: We work not only with the current students but also for the future of M-A through the Shadowing Program (see the article on page 23) and the three M-A Preview Days in September and October when we host Ravenswood School District eighth graders and give them information about their future high school. Photo: Betsy Snow Homecoming Hollywood Homecoming 2012 is right around the corner, with a week of festivities. Homecoming Rally: We are really looking forward to the Homecoming Rally on Monday, October 8, in Ayers Gym. Our fantastic MC, senior Jack Carmassi, and National Anthem singers will help us build that contagious M-A spirit. We will have interactive games, honor our sports teams, announce the Homecoming Court, and possibly astonish the crowd with a surprise or two. Spirit Week and the Homecoming Game: The rally will kick off Homecoming Spirit Week, which includes dress- up days and lunchtime activities. The week culminates in the Homecoming Game on Friday, October 12, between the M-A Bears and the Burlingame Panthers. Homecoming Dance: The Homecoming Dance will be held on Saturday, October 13, from 7 to 11 pm at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City. It’s a beautiful location that perfectly embodies the theme of Old Hollywood. For PAL members only, tickets go on sale September 24, 25, and 28. Sales continue October 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, and 10. See the Homecoming Dance information sheet on page 22. Class of 2013—seniors The senior class of 2013 is already gearing up for upcoming senior activities and Homecoming Week. To be sure your students are equipped with all of their senior gear, come by B21 to purchase a senior shirt during lunch (dates will be announced on Bear News). It is only $15 for a memorable piece of senior year. Presales were taken at Arena Check-In and on campus the first weeks of school. Supplies are limited. In addition, be sure your seniors stay on top of their classes and attendance in order to be able to attend the Homecoming Dance. We’re looking forward to a great year. For more information, go to www.mabears.org and click on the “Students” tab and then “Student Activities.” 24 October 2012 TriVocis TriVocis Calendar – October 2012 Monday Tuesday 1 School assembly (assembly class schedule, double 4th period) Foundation for the Future Board meeting; 7:00 pm Library 2 CAHSEE testing for grade 12 Wednesday 3 CAHSEE testing for grade 12 EL Parent meeting; 6:00 pm; M-A PAC cafe Thursday Friday Saturday 4 Last day to drop a class and not show on transcript 5 Last day to register for October 20 PSAT 6 SAT Test; 8:00 am 12 Homecoming Spirit Week; lunchtime activities 13 M-A 60thAnniversary Party; noon-4:00 pm Deadline to register for the November 3 SAT Guatemala Summer 2013 student info meeting; lunch; Room E4 SDMSC meeting; 3:304:45 pm; Career Center 8 Homecoming Spirit Week; lunchtime activities 9 Homecoming Spirit Week; lunchtime activities 10 Homecoming Spirit Week; lunchtime activities CELDT for English Learners PTA General meeting; 8:45 am; M-A PAC cafe CELDT for English Learners CELDT for English Learners Last day to purchase Homecoming Dance tickets EL Parent meeting; 6:00 pm; M-A PAC Cafe SUHSD Board meeting; 5:30 pm 16 CAML math contest; lunch 17 November TriVocis article deadline Homecoming Rally 15 23 EL Parent meeting; 6:00 pm; M-A PAC cafe CELDT for English Learners AVID parent workshop; 6:30 pm; M-A PAC cafe Parent Education: Dr. Madeline Levine on Teach Your Children Well; 7:00 pm; M-A PAC 18 SDMSC meeting; 4:40– 6:30 pm; Staff Center 24 SUHSD Board meeting; 5:30 pm 25 Trick-or-Treat Street at M-A; 5:00–7:00 pm Cañada College & SUHSD College Night Fair for students and parents; 5:00–8:00 pm; Cañada College 29 California Scholarship Federation (CSF) membership applications (M-A spring 2012 grades); lunch; outside Library UC Application Party; 6:00 pm; M-A PAC cafe; senior students only 30 CSF membership applications (M-A spring 2012 grades); lunch; outside Library EL Parent meeting; 6:00 pm; M-A PAC cafe CELDT for English Learners Homecoming Dance; 7:00–11:00 pm; Fox Theatre, RWC Homecoming football game 19 End of first quarter 20 PSAT test; 7:45 am 26 Fall Annual Blood Drive; Wrestling Room 27 ACT test; 8:00 am Guatemala Summer 2013 parent info meeting; 6:00–7:00 pm; room D22 EL Parent meeting; 6:00 pm; M-A PAC cfe 22 Foundation for the Future Board meeting; 7:00 pm; Library 11 Homecoming Spirit Week; lunchtime activities 31 Happy Halloween!
