1st SUNDAY OF LENT
HOLY LENT: A SACRAMENTAL JOURNEY FROM DEATH INTO LIFE!
Dear friends of Queen of Peace Parish,
As we begin together our Lenten journey, I would like to offer some brief
reflections about this penitential time of healing and conversion. The Lenten
Season, which runs from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday, is the period
of preparation for the celebration of Easter. It is a time to discover that
the fundamental enemy of every Christian is sin. Once we identify our true
problem in our own sins, and aided by the sacramental grace bestowed by
our Mother Church, we fight the good fight of faith armed with the
powerful weapons of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. I ask that we all
take advantage of the many opportunities offered by our parish to develop
our skills in combating our sins through Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament,
Confession, daily meditation of the Scriptures, supporting the needs of our
brothers and sisters, courageous giving, joining one of our parish ministries, etc.
A milestone in our Lenten journey at Queen of Peace will be the Ministry Fair which will take place after
each of the Masses during the weekend of March 5 & 6. We can't journey the path of Lent on our own.
We belong to a community of faith which walks together towards the Risen Lord as the sign of God's saving
presence in the world. Just as sin wounds our relationship both with God and with our neighbor, our Lenten
sacrifices bring us closer to God, but also to our parish brothers and sisters. Our faith requires concrete
incarnation through real, personal and actual Christian deeds done to those we share our life with. During these
days of purification and renewal, let us recall that “faith without works is dead” (James 2:26).
Not by change, the character of this liturgical season has always been deeply marked by the
catechumenate (RCIA), that is, the process of Christian initiation into the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist,
and Confirmation. The time of Lent is the time of immediate preparation for the reception of these sacraments.
It is a time of intense formation, not only for those entering the Catholic Church, but for the entire Christian
community. Lent is our great opportunity to rediscover, revive and renew our own Baptism, to reawaken
our baptismal grace, to experience our total incorporation into Christ and to his Church in our daily lives.
It is a time of conversion, of return to the way of the Lord, and of reconciliation with and service to our
brothers and sisters.
This is a time to stop for a moment our busy lives, listen attentively to the Word of God, especially the
biblical readings proclaimed at Mass, and spend more time in prayer so that we may receive a deeper
spirit of repentance, and the desire for conversion. In a special way during this Jubilee Year of Mercy,
the Sacrament of Penance should become a fundamental means of conversion and return to God during
this Lent. Behind the penitential practices of this Season lays our existential need for experiencing that
God is Forgiveness, Mercy, Compassion, Charity and Self-Giving.
Mary, our Queen of Peace, though without need of conversion, has wanted to do this
journey of conversion with us. She has also walked our pilgrimage of faith, accompanying
the only Son in silence on his Way to Jerusalem, towards the Cross and the
Resurrection. Under the Cross, Mary is for us the “refuge of sinners.” Let us ask her
to guide our steps towards the new and eternal life of her Son in this time of Lent.
During this time of Lent, I humbly ask you to pray for me, a weak and sinful man,
immensely loved by God, as I constantly do for you!

¡CUARESMA SANTA: UNA JORNADA SACRAMENTAL DE LA MUERTE A LA VIDA!
Queridos amigos de la
Parroquia Reina de la Paz,
A medida que comenzamos
juntos nuestra jornada de
Cuaresma, me gustaría
ofrecerles unas breves
reflexiones sobre este
tiempo penitencial de sanacion y conversion. El tiempo de Cuaresma, el cual dura del Miercoles de Ceniza al
Jueves Santo, es un periodo de preparación para la celebración de Pascua. Es un tiempo para descubrir que
el enemigo fundamental de cada Cristiano es el pecado. Una vez que identificamos nuestro verdadero problema
en nuestros propios pecados, y ayudados por la gracia sacramental otorgada por nuestra Madre Iglesia, podemos
luchar la Buena pelea con fe, armados con las armas ponderosas de la oración, el ayuno, y la limosna.
Les pido que aprovechemos de las muchas oportunidades que ofrece nuestra parroquia para desarrollar
nuestras habilidades en combatir nuestros
pecados por medio de la Adoracion del Sagrado Sacramento, la
Confesion, la meditacion diaria de las Escrituras, apoyando las necesidades de nuestros hermanos y hermanas, la
entrega valiente, el formar parte de uno de nuestros ministerios parroquiales, etc.
Un acontecimiento en nuestra jornada Cuaresmal en Reina de la Paz sera nuestra Feria de Ministerios, la
cual se llevará acabo después de cada Misa durante el fin de semana del 5 & 6 de marzo. No podemos
andar en nuestro camino de Cuaresma solos. Pertenecemos a una comunidad de fe con la que caminamos juntos
hacia el Senor Resucitado como senal de la presencia salvadora de Dios en el mundo. Así como el pecado hiere
a nuestra relacion con Dios y con nuestro projimo, nuestros sacrificios nos unen a Dios y a nuestros hermanos
y hermanas parroquiales. Nuestra fe requiere encarnacion concreta por medio de actos Cristianos reales,
personales, y actuales, hechos por aquellos con quien compartimos nuestras vidas. Durante estos días de
purificacion y renovacion, recordemos que "la fe sin las obras esta muerta". (Santiago 2:26)
No es por coincidencia que el caracter de este tiempo liturgico siempre ha estado profundamente marcado
por el catecumenado (RICA), es decir, el proceso de iniciacion cristiana hacia los sacramentos del Bautismo, la
Eucaristía y la Confirmacion. El tiempo de Cuaresma es el tiempo de preparacion inmediata para la recepcion
de estos sacramentos. Es un momento de intensa formacion, no solo para los que entran a la Iglesia Catolica,
sino para toda la comunidad cristiana. La Cuaresma es nuestra gran oportunidad para redescubrir, revivir y
renovar nuestro propio bautismo, para despertar nuestra gracia bautismal, para experimentar nuestra
incorporacion total a Cristo y a su Iglesia en nuestras vidas diarias. Es un tiempo de conversion, de regreso al
camino del Senor, y de reconciliacion y el servicio a nuestros hermanos y hermanas.
Este es un tiempo para detener por un momento nuestras vidas ocupadas, escuchar atentamente la Palabra de
Dios, especialmente las lecturas bíblicas proclamadas en la Misa, y pasar más tiempo en oración para que
podamos recibir un espíritu más profundo de arrepentimiento, y el deseo de conversion. De manera
especial durante este Ano Jubilar de la Misericordia, el Sacramento de la Penitencia debe convertirse en un
medio fundamental para la conversion y volver a Dios en esta Cuaresma. Detras de las practicas penitenciales
de este tiempo, esta nuestra necesidad existencial para experimentar que Dios es perdón, misericordia,
compasion, caridad y entrega.
María, nuestra Reina de la Paz, sin necesidad de conversion, ha querido hacer esta jornada de conversion con
nosotros. Ha caminado nuestra peregrinacion de fe, acompanando a su unico Hijo en silencio en su Camino a
Jerusalen, hacia la Cruz y la Resurreccion. Bajo la Cruz, María es para nosotros un “refugio de pecadores.”
Pidamosle que guie nuestros pasos hacia la vida nueva y eterna de su Hijo en este tiempo de Cuaresma.
¡Durante este tiempo de Cuaresma, humildemente les pido que oren por mí, un hombre debil y pecador,
inmensamente amado por Dios, como yo lo hago constantemente por ustedes!

of the largest Christian communities in the world

Church and a

Russian
Orthodox
Church, making
Pope Francis’
meeting with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow
and All Russia, highly important.
The theme of the meeting is genocide of
Christians in the Middle East. While
problems remain in the relations between
the churches, both see protection of
persecuted Christians as a priority, the
Synodal Department for External Church
Relations said ahead of the meeting.
The meeting place, an airport, has great
significance.
"It is discussed that they could meet in a
church, and finally the announced meeting
point is an airport, almost the waiting
area, but it is
very symbolic.
The conversation
will
take place at
a crossroad
of the two
roads.

When people
meet at a
crossroad, their meetings are short, but
sincere and deep," first deputy head of the
Synodal Department for Church, Society
and Media Relations Alexander Shchipkov
said in his interview with the Izvestia daily.
This concrete act of unity serves as an
example for all of us. In our lives – even in
our parish – we have people we consider
different than us, people from whom we
often distance ourselves. This is an invitation to change that and to put behind
our differences and find forgiveness
and unity. Let’s ask for God’s grace to
encounter each other.

Pope Francis in Mexico: February 12th - 17th
While he’ll be based in the nation’s capital Mexico City, site of the Shrine of Our
Lady of Guadalupe, he’ll also be spending a day in Chiapas home to a majority
indigenous population, in Michoacan one of the most crime ridden parts of the
country, and Ciudad Juarez. Below is the message he gave ahead of his visit.
Dear brothers and sisters,
I am happy, I feel great joy. In my prayers, I always have a thought for all Mexicans. I
carry them in my heart. Now I will be able to visit them and tread the soil of this
blessed land, so beloved by God and so close to the Virgin Mary.
It’s possible that you may be asking yourselves: "What does the Pope want with
this journey?" The answer is immediate and it is simple: I want to come as a
missionary of mercy and peace; I want to meet with you so we can confess
our faith in God together and share a fundamental truth in our lives: that is that that God loves us very much,
He loves us with an infinite love which goes well beyond our merits. I want to be as close to you as possible, especially to
those of you who are suffering, I want to embrace you and tell you that Jesus loves you very much, that He is always at
your side.
I am glad to know that you are preparing for the visit by praying a lot. Prayer opens our hearts and prepares it to
receive God’s gifts. Prayer gives us the light to see others as God sees them, to love as God loves. Thank you for praying

Un encuentro histórico y simbólico entre los lideres DISCIPULADO
Un camino para crecer
de las comunidades cristianas mas grandes
juntos como familia
Nunca antes se había llevado acabo un encuentro
entre un pontífice de la
iglesia Catolica y un líder
de la Iglesia Ortodoxa, en
casi mil anos de cisma,
haciendo este encuentro
un acontecimiento historico.
"Por supuesto, todos esperamos que la
reunion transcurra con exito. Valoramos
altamente la predisposicion de ambos
líderes religiosos a celebrar dicho encuentro",
dijo Dmitri Peskov, portavoz del Kremlin, a
medios locales.
El lugar del encuentro, un aeropuerto en La
Habana, tiene gran significado. Peskov
considera que la decisión de reunirse en
territorio neutral es "una concesión
mutua" y puede interpretarse como un
paso al
encuentro entre Rusia y
Occidente.
El tema central del encuentro sera la
dramatica situacion de los
cristianos en Oriente Medio, el norte y el centro de
Africa, donde son perseguidos. La
comunidad
Catolica rusa, dio la bienvenida a la reunion, aunque la Iglesia Rusa descarto, por el momento, una
posible visita del papa a Rusia.
Las relaciones entre ambas iglesias alcanzaron su punto mas bajo con el pontificado
de Juan Pablo II, mal visto en Moscu por su
papel en la caída del comunismo, pero han
mejorado.
Este acto concreto de unidas no sirve como
ejemplo. En nuestras vidas – hasta en nuestra parroquia – tenemos personas que consideramos diferentes que nosotros, personas de las que nos distanciamos. Esta es una
invitacion para cambiar, y dejar atrás
nuestras diferencias y encontrar el perdón y la unidad. Pidamos por la gracia de
parroquial siguiendo a
Jesucristo.
Estamos tomando el
próximo paso en la
jornada del Discipulado.
Concretamente, estamos
desarrollando oportunidades para compartir
nuestro tiempo, dones y
talentos con los demás,
hacia la construcción del
Reino de Dios en nuestra

Aunque estara basado en la capital de la nacion Ciudad de Mexico, sede
del Santuario de la Virgen de Guadalupe, patrona de las Americas, el Papa
pasara el día en Chiapas, hogar de una poblacion mayoritariamente
indígena, en Michoacan una de las partes de la nacion con el índice mas
alto en crimen, y Ciudad Juarez, en la frontera con Texas, la cual hace poco
fue apodada 'la capital mundial del asesinato ". Este fue su mensaje antes
de su visita.
Queridos hermanos:
Cuando ya falta muy poco para mi viaje a Mexico, estoy contento, siento
una gran alegría. Siempre tuve un recuerdo especial en mi oracion por
todos los mexicanos. Los llevo dentro de mi corazon, ahora podre visitarlos
y pisar esa bendita tierra, tan amada de Dios, y tan querida de la Virgen María.
Es posible que ustedes se pregunten: ¿Y que pretende el Papa con este viaje? La respuesta es inmediata y sencilla: Deseo
ir como misionero de la misericordia y de la paz; en-contrarme con ustedes para confesar juntos nuestra fe en Dios y
compartir una verdad fundamental en nuestras vi-das: que Dios nos quiere mucho, que nos ama con un amor infinito,
mas alla de nuestros meritos, Quiero estar lo mas cerca posible de ustedes, pero de modo especial de todos aquellos que
sufren, para abrazarlos y decirles que Jesus los quiere mucho, que El siempre esta a su lado.
Me alegra saber que se estan preparando para el viaje con mucha oracion. La oracion ensancha nuestro corazon y lo
prepara para recibir los dones de Dios. La oracion ilumi-na nuestros ojos para saber ver a los demas como los ve Dios,

Job Goals: To facilitate the personal and life-changing encounter with Christ that our
youth and young adults need to experience. The person we are looking for needs to be a
missionary disciple who attracts our youth to God’s love and forgiveness lived within a
community of faith. This requires a vision to evangelize and “make disciples.”
Job Description: Specific responsibilities will be developed through close collaboration
with the pastor, along with other staff members. Faithfulness to the teaching and practices

I DOMINGO DE CUARESMA
Queen of Peace Middle School & High School Youth Groups
Dear young people,
Jesus said to his disciples: “Be careful not to
practice your good works before men to be seen by
them”… “When you give to the poor do not sound a
trumpet before you”… “Your Father, who sees what
is done in secret, will reward you”.
When we do something good, sometimes we
are tempted to seek praise and to be rewarded:
that’s human glory. But it’s a false reward because
it makes us focus on what others think of us.
Jesus asks us to do good for the sake of good. He asks us to feel
we are under the watchful gaze of our Heavenly Father at all
times and to live in relationship with Him – not in relationship with
the opinion of others.
Living in the presence of the Father gives us a much deeper
joy than worldly glory can give us. May our attitude this Lent be
one of living in secret where the Father sees us, loves us and waits
for us. Naturally, exterior things are important too, but we must
always choose to live in the presence of God.

Queridos chicos,
Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Tenga cuidado de
no practicar vuestra justicia delante de los hombres
para ser vistos por ellos” … “Cuando des limosna,
no toquéis trompeta delante de ti” … “Tu Padre,
que ve en secreto, él te recompensará “.
Cuando hacemos algo bien, a veces nos vemos
tentados a ser apreciados y tener una
recompensa: la gloria humana. Pero es una
recompensa falsa porque nos proyecta hacia lo que otros piensan
de nosotros.
Jesús nos pide hacer el bien porque es bueno. Nos pide que nos
sintamos siempre bajo la mirada de nuestro Padre celestial y vivir
en unión con Él, no en relación con el juicio de los demás.
Vivir ante la presencia del Padre es una alegría mucho más
profunda que la gloria mundana. Que nuestra actitud en esta Cuaresma sea, por lo tanto, vivir en secreto, donde el Padre nos ve, nos
ama, nos espera. Por supuesto, también las cosas externas son
importantes, pero siempre debemos elegir y vivir en presencia de
Dios.

Would you like to learn more about the awesome mission Friends of St. Andrew? Do you have free
time on Tuesdays or Thursdays? Then we have just what you are looking for! On Tuesdays, we are
looking for two people to be face-to-face interviewers and on Thursdays, we are looking for someone
to work in our food pantry area sorting and shelving our canned goods. Volunteers commit to being at
Friends one day a week from 9:00 to 2:00. If you are interested or wanting more information, please
