Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to invite you to our 34th Annual Religious Education Congress of Our Lady of the Angels Pastoral
Region.
Our congress offers you the opportunity to learn, to educate, to gather, to re-encounter. Come and join hundreds of educators of faith (catechists, parish leaders, liturgy ministers, teachers, priests, religious, volunteers…) who congregate year
after year to celebrate faith and life, and to renew their commitment to SEEK MERCY, TO LIVE MERCY AND TO BE
MERCY as we prepare in this beautiful missionary adventure of going out to bring the beauty of God’s love to our
brothers and sisters.
You will have more than 80 workshops in English and Spanish to choose from. I believe it will be a difficult task, given
the diverse group of selected speakers. We will also have a liturgy presided by our own Regional Bishop, who will present
the Excellence in Catechetical Service Award (E.C.S.A.) to selected catechists.
May Mary Queen and Mother of Mercy continue walking with us in our journey of renewal and encounter with Jesus.

Me da mucho gusto invitarles a nuestro trigésimo-cuarto Congreso Anual de la Región Pastoral de Nuestra Señora de Los
Ángeles.
Nuestro congreso les ofrece la oportunidad de aprender, de educar, de convivir, de conocer, de encontrar y de
re-encontrar. Vengan y únanse a cientos de educadores de la fe (catequistas, líderes parroquiales, ministros litúrgicos,
maestros, sacerdotes, religiosas/os, voluntarios…) que se congregan año tras año para celebrar la fe y la vida y para renovar el compromiso de BUSCAR, VIVIR Y SER MISERICORDIA en esta bella aventura misionera de salir y llevar la
belleza del amor de Dios a nuestros hermanos y hermanas.
Tendrán más de 80 talleres en inglés y español para escoger. Creo que será difícil, por la variedad y selección de los conferencistas. Tendremos también una liturgia presidida por nuestro Obispo Regional, el cual presentará los Premios a la
Excelencia en el Servicio de Catequesis (PESCA) a los catequistas seleccionados.
Que nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, Reina y Madre de la Misericordia, continúe acompañándonos en nuestra jornada de
renovación y de encuentro con Jesús.

Registration Fee: $30 before October 11. All registrations received after October 11, will pay $35 per person.

Dr. Michael DiPaolo is a clinical psychologist & certified Imago Relationship
Therapist in practice in West Los Angeles. He received his education from the
University of Notre Dame, Columbia University, and the California School of
Professional Psychology. Among his ministry work, he has counseled over 1,000
couples in marriage preparation throughout the archdiocese. He and his wife
Jennie have been married for 16 years and have 3 children.

1-06 THE CALL TO PRAYER IN THE JOURNEY OF
THE CATECHIST: BRINGING CHILDREN TO AN
ENCOUNTER WITH JESUS! THE CLASSROOM: HOLY
GROUND!
In this workshop we will creatively explore bringing children to God
in the Holy Ground of the classroom by expanding lessons with games, videos, and activities that are fun and hold the children’s interest
and attention. Prayerfully bring yourself and your children to a deeper
friendship with Jesus.
Eileen Fewless volunteered as a young catechist in 1967 at her parish,
Warren G. Kunkle III is presently a sales representative for William H. Sadlier Inc. He is a Master Catechist and volunteers in his parish as the High School
Confirmation Parent Formation Coordinator. He has also served as a Parish
Administrator, Youth Minister/Confirmation Coordinator and a variety of other
ministries over the past 25 years. With his wife, Olga and their three teen-age
sons, a broader understanding of the realities of our “domestic” church and its
unique challenges, will be fore-front in this presentation.
St. Bernardine in Woodland Hills, and has served as the parish DRE for
the past 40 years. As an experienced Parish Catechetical Leader, Eileen
serves the archdiocese as a Master Catechist, is a consultant for RCL
Benziger, and continues to grow in her profession having recently completing the Archdiocesan Professional Development Series.

THE FAMILY: THE FOUNDATION OF FAITH
Each time parents share a story or create a family tradition, they
cultivate the fertile soil of faith formation. As domestic church,
the family carries out the six tasks of catechesis in informal and
yet potent ways. By naming and recognizing these tasks, catechists
affirm what families already do and offer ways to support and
encourage growth of faith both within the home and beyond it. In

ILLUMINATING CHURCH TEACHINGS ON
HOMOSEXUALITY IN THE YEAR OF MERCY
Since the beginning of his papacy, Pope Francis has reached out
to people on the margins of our Church, including Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, and Transgender Catholics. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, with its theme of “revolution of tenderness,” we will explore
where Church Teachings meet reality for LGBT Catholics, especially for those in long term relationships who have children. Can
the journeys of Gay and Lesbian people help broaden the Catholic
concept of human sexuality and what it means to be a family?
The Catholic Ministry with Lesbian and Gay Persons, formerly called the Ministry with Lesbian and Gay Catholics, was called into existence during a sermon
given in February, 1986 by Archbishop Roger Mahony, then in office only a few
months, who called for lesbians and gays to join together, supporting each other on
their faith journey. Our mission: We believe that baptism empowers all persons to
live a full, Catholic life in union with all members of the Church. We provide a safe
and welcoming environment for lesbian and gay persons, their friends and family,
through liturgy, outreach, education, and fellowship.

Kathy Ritza is currently the Director of Faith Formation at St. Denis
Church in Diamond Bar, CA. She has over 25 years of experience in
catechesis as a parent, grandparent, catechist, DRE, retreat director and
Master Catechist for the Archdiocese of LA. She is currently a consultant
for RCLBenziger.

OPENING DOORS OF MERCY
Pope Francis has continually called us to open the doors of faith
and mercy for those who seek the Lord. We will explore how,
through catechesis, we can open those doors for those we serve.
Dr. Carole M. Eipers is the National Catechetical Advisor for William
H.Sadlier, Inc. She served in parish ministries for over 20 years as a
teacher, Director of Religious Education, Youth Minister and Pastoral
Associate. She was Director of the Office for Catechesis for the Archdiocese of Chicago for nine years and served as President of the National
Conference of Catechetical Leadership. She holds a Master of Pastoral
Studies degree from Loyola University Chicago and a Doctor of Ministry
degree from the Graduate Theological Foundation in Indiana. Her books
include Sending Out Roots: Helping Parents and Teachers to Share the Faith
and Wade Don't Dive: Giving New and Seasoned Catechists Confidence.

DEACON DOUGLASS JOHNSON of the Los Angeles Archdiocese
(Educator/Writer/Speaker) taught at the elementary, middle and high
school levels for over fifteen years. As an educator, he has developed
campus youth and young adult ministries, facilitated youth gang and
delinquency intervention programs and monitored/counseled at-risk
youth. Some of these experiences resulted in the inspiration for his coOur Lady of the Angels

2-01 LET THE CHILDREN COME TO ME

2-04 WHO ME, LEAD A RETREAT?
The objective is to bring all children into a relationship with God
by providing religious educators an opportunity to explore the
world of children with special needs, especially autism, while
examining attitudes and current perspectives about special needs
with an eye to starting a special needs program within the religious education program of the church.
The idea of leading a retreat might sound daunting or unrealistic,
especially if we think of it in terms of a lengthy or totally silent
experience. In this workshop, we'll look at ways to plan and lead
children, youth, adults, or families in retreat experiences that are
engaging, creative, and deeply spiritual. Even if time is limited or
the space is less-than-ideal, you will find ideas for drawing

biblical dramas. She has traveled extensively across the United States
and internationally singing in Europe and Canada. She studied Liturgy
at St. Patrick’s Seminary and JTU. As a former Catholic school teacher,
professional staff member of Camp Fire Boys and Girls and Director/
Producer of local youth musicals, Sam has had vast experience working
with children of all ages.

2-05 FAITH + ENTHUSIASM + TEACHING TIPS =
SUCCESSFUL CLASSES
A catechist is someone who can ignite a “spark” of faith in others, not so much by the content he or she teaches, but by the example and witness he or she is in the classroom. Catechists have a
teacher manual for the content, but they’re always looking for
more ideas and activities for an engaging and successful lesson.
This session will help catechists respond to the call to teach and
be a witness in the classroom. John will provide a wealth of practical and creative ideas, strategies, and management tips for the
faith formation classroom. You will leave with a feeling of, “I
really CAN do this!” You CAN have a successful class!
2-02 KEEPING SABBATH: FINDING SACRED TIME
IN A 24/7 CONNECTED CULTURE
We know that in our fast paced Society, we live to achieve, to
win, to possess. Sabbath on the other hand offers an alternative to
the great demands that we allow to eat up our lives. This session
will challenge us to step off the treadmill of working and buying/
spending, disengage from the rat race of consumer culture, and
return our minds and hearts to a path of holiness and spirituality.
What are the hopes and challenges in this process?
John Collins is a retired elementary school principal, former Director
of Curriculum and Professional Development and elementary school
teacher. He is also a former DRE and catechist. John has worked with
Sadlier in the northeast for many years, and is now a full-time National
Religion Consultant with Sadlier. He is a keynote speaker and workshop
presenter. John has experience both as a professional educator and a
catechetical leader.
Sr. Edith Prendergast is the Former Director of Religious Education
for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. She holds a Doctorate in Ministry
from Calaremont School of Theology, and a Master's Degree in Theology from Boston College. She is a frequent speaker nationally and locally
and has contributed to several articles on Spiritually and Catechesis.
She is the author of "Grace Abounds" and in Sept. 2015 received the
"evangelists Gaudium- Joy of the Gospel award at the 75th Anniversary
of St. John's Seminary.
2-06AMORIS LAETITIA AND CONSCIENCE FORMATION
One of the key elements of Pope Francis' recent letter is the importance of the conscience and its formation in moral decision
making. This session will explore this theme of his letter as well
as present components of moral decision making, discernment
and formation of the conscience.
Fr. Christopher Bazyouros was born and grew up in the San Gabriel
Valley. He entered St. John's Seminary after receiving a Bachelor's DeWHAT MAKES US CHURCH: EVENTS THAT gree in Chemistry. Ordained in 2003, he is serving in the Archdiocese as

BELIEFS WE HOLD DEAR
Using the wisdom of others, media from unexpected sources, and
our own reflections, this session will allow us an opportunity to
reflect briefly on (1) the peak moments in our history that have
made us what we are today; (2) current trends that impact our
present-day experience and lead us into the future; and (3) the
core beliefs of our faith that sustain us, no matter what.
Joan Doyle, catechetical consultant, workshop presenter, writer,
nationally certified Lay Ecclesial Minister has held a variety of positions
in her LA parish, St. Paul the Apostle (junior high religion teacher and
assistant principal; parish DRE). Joan serves annually as a judge for the
HUMANITAS PRIZE, rewarding writers of film and TV shows that both,
entertain and enrich the viewing public, and has written the Study Guides
for the DVD series “Film Clips for Catholic Youth Faith Formation
(Elementary)."

MIDDLE SCHOOL MINISTRY: FEAR NOT!
Young adolescents are growing up in a very interesting time. So
how do we minister to them? Do not be afraid! This workshop is
for any catechist, coordinator or leader involved in Middle
School Ministry and will break open the developmental changes
of young adolescence and give strategies for ministering to this
fun and unique age group.
Heather MacDonald works for the Office of Religious Education in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as a Consultant for Youth & Young Adult Ministry. She
works and resides in the Santa Barbara Region. She is a Master Catechist in the
Archdiocese and has spent 16 years working as a Youth Minister, Confirmation
Coordinator and Director of Religious Education.

Terri Palmer is the Director of Faith Formation at St. Augustine Church in
Culver City. Terri has over 25 years of experience in Religious Education, including positions as a Catechist, Retreat Facilitator, Lecturer and DRE. She and her
husband, Deacon Scott, completed the Archdiocese Diaconate Formation program in 1999. She has continued her formation by earning multiple certification
and went onto become a Master Catechist in 2010. Terri graduated from the LMU
RCIA Certification Program May 29, 2012. Terri also serves on the L.A. Archdiocese ABC Board and is a VIRTUS Facilitator.

3-08 PREPARING FIRST COMMUNION LITURGIES:
MAKING STUDENT PARTICIPATION A PRIORITY
Too often we underestimate children’s understanding of how to
pray liturgically. They are more innately responsive than we
might think. Let’s explore together ways that young students can
become actively involved in examining and playing with the major symbols of the liturgy, and then help in preparing their own
authentic participation, which will, in turn, engage the whole
assembly’s participation. A little child will lead them!
Joan Vos started working at her first parish at St. Mel in Woodland Hills, in
1976. Then left Los Angeles in 1979 to pursue a Master of Arts in Liturgical Music
at the University of Notre Dame. After graduating, she worked in Toronto at various parishes and on the Diocesan Music Commission; established and managed
the Office of Worship in Wichita, Kansas; wrote and published “Celebrating
School Liturgies: Guidelines for Planning,” published by Liturgical Press in 1990.
(Now out of print!) Since returning to Los Angeles in 1992, and while raising three
daughters, she has worked in various parishes. Joan was also a member of Cardinal Mahoney’s Committee for “Gather Faithfully Together”. She is currently
works in the Office for Worship of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as Associate
Director for Formation. She has also taught private piano and classroom music
for 40 years.

BIBLE STUDY--HOW DO WE KNOW WE ARE
DOING IT RIGHT?
The study of Sacred Scripture as personal devotion, and also
within the context of parish faith formation has become a more
regular and expected experience for Catholics. And rightly so!
But how do we know we are doing it right? Fortunately, Holy
Mother Church provides ample direction for the study of Sacred
Scripture. In addition to rejecting biblical fundamentalism, the
Church offers specific, constructive guidance for authentic Catholic biblical interpretation. In this presentation, we will examine
key teachings of Vatican Council II on Sacred Scripture together
with guidelines from the Pontifical Biblical Commission, in an
effort to answer the question, “How do we stay on a fruitful
course and out of the biblical weeds?”

His primary theological interest is the study of Sacred Scripture, and the implementation of successful strategies for increasing biblical literacy in the Catholic
parish. He has coordinated the scripture study program at St. Jerome Parish in
Westchester for 15 years, and holds certification from the LA Catholic Bible Institute--a 3-year formation program administered by the LA Archdiocese Office of
Religious Education and Loyola Marymount. In 2010 he joined the CBI organizing team and assists in the training of parish bible study facilitators for the LA
Archdiocese.

Sister Rose Marie Tulacz, SND holds an MA in Pastoral Theology
and Ministry from Boston College School of Theology and graduate
work in Spiritual Direction from Loyola Marymount University. Her
ministry includes retreats, talks, family catechesis, faith formation and
parish missions. Her photography specializes in spiritual and humanitarian outreach. Sister exhibited her photography at the 2015 World
Meeting of Family in Philadelphia.

The Office of Religious Education in the OLA Regional will recognize volunteer catechist in the various deaneries who have served their parishes with marked excellence, dedication and passion for ministry. Each of us

The Pilgrim Virgin / La Virgen Peregrina
La Virgen Peregrina es una imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe donada por la catedral de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles.
Cada año, la peregrina es presentada en el
congreso a una de las parroquias participantes
del congreso. La parroquia se queda con ella por
todo un año. ¿Qué hacen con ella? Básicamente,
la peregrina se hace peregrina dentro de la
misma comunidad parroquial. Nuestra Madre
va de casa en casa abriendo puertas y haciendo
familia. La virgen visita a cada catequista y se
queda con ella una semana, durante la cual, la
comunidad catequética y el vecindario es invitado
a rezar el rosario cada día. La experiencia vivida
de aquellos que la han tenido es tan grande que al
final del año, aun no quisieran entregarla .
The Pilgrim Virgin is an image of Virgin Mary donated by the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
Every year, La Peregrina, as we refer to this image, is presented at our regional congress to one of the participating parishes.
The parish keeps the image for a whole year, what do they do with her? Basically, the image becomes a pilgrim within the
parochial community. Our Blessed Mother goes from home to home opening doors and building community. The Pilgrim
Virgin visits each catechist in his/her home and stays there for a week during which, the catechetical community as well as
neighbors are invited to pray the rosary every day. The experience of those having shared their parish with La Peregrina is
so amazing that even when it’s their turn to return her at the following congress, they just want to keep her forever.

La diversidad de la Iglesia en sus diferentes formas (étnica, generacional, espiritualidad) nos llama a construir una comunidad inclusiva que acepta, acoge, y responde a la jornada de fe de cada creación única de Dios, llamados a la comunión entre hermanos. Como
vehículos del amor y unidad de Dios, la cual nos llama a dignificar al “vecino” sin distinción, estamos constantemente desafiados
por la comodidad nuestro entorno habitual. Igualmente, estamos
influidos por los prejuicios humanos que nos impiden forjar una

EN EL MINISTERIO DE HOY
El ritual de las aperturas de las “Puertas Sagrada” durante el año
de la Misericordia es un símbolo del camino eclesial hacia la
unidad, reconciliación y salvación. Además, el Papa Francisco
enfatiza el rol de los “misionarios de la misericordia” como embajadores del amor y gracia de Dios en el mundo. Durante esta
sesión, reflexionaremos sobre el rol del líder laico y coordinadores
ministeriales como vehículos de unidad y reconciliación, quienes

Lourdes González-Rubio es la Coordinadora de Ministerios Catequísticos
Básicos y Avanzados en Español para la Oficina de Educación Religiosa de nuestra Arquidiócesis desde 1991. Colaboró con la Oficina para el Culto Divino, también de nuestra Arquidiócesis, dando entrenamiento a los ministros litúrgicos

Este taller participa en la discusión de la narrativa del Evangelio
según San Juan para afinar nuestra apreciación por la Eucaristía.

El objetivo de este taller es ayudar al coordinador hacer más fácil la preparación de la Liturgia del día del Sacramento. La Confirmación es el Sacramento que nos ayuda a vivir mejor nuestro Bautismo y profundizar más nuestra
relación con Dios y con su Iglesia. Necesitamos hacer nuestras liturgias más
vivas y plenas que ayuden a nuestros candidatos a descubrir su belleza. Revisaremos cada aspecto de la liturgia para sacar el mejor provecho de ello.
Aprovechemos este momento para evangelizar. Llenaremos la forma que
manda la oficina del Obispo para el mejor desarrollo de la misa.

Desde el comienzo de su papado, el Papa Francisco ha salido
en busca de las personas en los márgenes de nuestra Iglesia
incluyendo a las Personas Lesbianas, Gay, Bisexual y Transgénero
(Católicos LGBT). En éste Jubileo de la Misericordia, con su
tema de la "revolución de la ternura", exploraremos en qué punto
las enseñanzas de la Iglesia se intersectan con la realidad de los
Católicos LGBT, especialmente para aquellos que están en una
relación de por vida y que tienen hijos. ¿Pueden las trayectorias de
Católicos Gay y Lesbianas ayudarnos a refinar nuestra visión
sobre la sexualidad humana y lo que significa ser familia?
LOS HIJOS SE HABLEN
Establecer una comunicación más profunda, significativa y
efectiva con los hijos, es reto cada vez mayor. Saber comunicarse,
escuchando, y escuchar para comunicarse mejor, son el primer
paso para una comunicación más significativa, y siguen siendo
indispensables para tener familias felices y funcionales. Este taller
ofrecerá herramientas prácticas para ayudar a los padres de familia
a nombrar y expresar sentimientos sin causar daño a la otra
persona; solucionar problemas junto con los hijos, sin imponer;
establecer límites firmes y saludables; encontrar alternativas a los
castigos, enfatizar más los éxitos y logros; usar elogios y fortalecer
la autoestima; utilizar los medios de comunicación para acercarse
