In this week‟s Gospel, the Lord tells us to “remain” in Him. It sounds like fairly straight forward advice, but it may not be easily followed. Do the actions of our personal lives really reflect that we are remaining in Him? Are we following the Commandments, living in virtue? Does our approach to liturgy make it clear that we are seeking a holy encounter with Him, desiring to “remain” in Him above all things? In this season of First Communions, Confirmations, and Ordinations, the Church‟s sacraments show our Lord‟s desire to imbue His people with His presence. Each of these sacraments, of course, have continuing implications. Even at Holy Mass, like in so many things in life, however, we can take things for granted and become too casual. We can forget the awesomeness of this august and solemn privilege to express our acknowledgment and love of the real presence of Christ, seeking to remain totally in Him. Sometimes, after a Sunday Mass has begun, presided over by another priest, I notice cars still arriving and parking. I have seen, at times, people arriving as late as 40 minutes into the Mass, still streaming into the Church, I suppose in hopes of fulfilling their Sunday “obligation.” Wow! Forty minutes late for a Mass that ordinarily lasts sixty! Is such tardiness really a true reflection of remaining in the Lord? Since most Masses are approximately an hour in length, that means that the sum total of such a person‟s liturgical acknowledgment of the Lord of Heaven and earth in a given week may be as little as twenty minutes! Shockingly still is the number of people who quickly and conspicuously leave church at the time of the Lord‟s Prayer. They think we don‟t see them, but it is obvious. Sometimes, as soon as they receive Communion, they are on their way out the door, not even staying for the final prayer and blessing, let alone the important fellowship that happens after Mass. It‟s like going to someone‟s house for dinner and, as an invited guest, leaving their house before even saying goodbye to the host. Unthinkable it would be! Why would it then be acceptable at Mass to be so casual? Does that approach to a holy encounter with Christ really reflect that we are seeking to remain in Him? Or is our time in His house so painful, we are just trying to get it over with and return to the normal routine of our lives? Our actions, often, speak volumes about whether we truly desire to “remain” in Him. A “drive-through” approach to Catholicism is surely less than life-giving. Let us more and more spiritualize our lives, imbue them with the heavenly gifts of grace that come to us through sacred rites, place our commitment in Christ above all other pursuits, and remain convincingly in the Lord. Whether or not the pastor sees us, it is the Lord who awaits our authenticity. A whole roomful of people are baptized with the Holy Spirit before they are baptized with water! The verb used—“the Holy Spirit „fell‟ on them” (Acts 10:44)—is characteristic of the way the Spirit works throughout the book of Acts: powerful and surprising. Though this “baptism” is not the normative way the New Testament describes baptism, it is still a good reminder today that the Holy Spirit is not controlled by whether or not we pour water, but rather that our sacramental signs reveal the presence of the Spirit at work among us. And we have a double reinforcement of how this work is accomplished from a Letter and a Gospel bearing John‟s name. It is love, self-sacrificing and self-giving love, that manifests the Spirit of Jesus in our midst. It is love that is the greatest of commandments. The Spirit is manifested equally through those who live in that love. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Just as the origins of Lent have to do with accompanying people in the final stages of preparation for baptism at Eastertime, so does the structure of the Easter season help the newly received Catholics take root in the community. This is the season of “mystagogy,” which means “reflection on the mysteries.” This means that new Catholics are remembering the sacraments by which they become one with us, and are sorting out the implications for their everyday life. They can understand the excitement of Cornelius and his family in the first reading, filled with the Holy Spirit, and so eager to begin their new life that they overwhelm St. Peter. The second reading and the Gospel today likewise help our new brothers and sisters explore their new life as an experience of God‟s tender love. Long ago, our tradition named these newly baptized adults and children the “neophytes,” from Greek words meaning “newly planted.” Newly planted in the garden of faith, they look to us to provide the fertile soil in which their new life can take root and grow. You can help. If you have “neophytes” in your parish, a card or note of welcome, or warm words of congratulation, are still timely. It‟s Easter! Seminarian to return to Little Flower The Vocation Office of the Archdiocese of Miami has announced that seminarian Krystian Gadzina will be re-assigned to the Church of the Little Flower for the summer months. He will be arriving within the next couple of weeks and will be with us until the middle of August, when he will continue his seminary studies. Welcome back Krystian! Mother’s Day Novena Beginning with Mother‟s Day, and lasting throughout the month of May, there will be special prayerful recognition of all mothers, living and deceased, by way of the Mother‟s Day Novena of Masses. The yellow Mother‟s Day envelopes that all registered parishioners already have can be turned into the office or the collection basket, so that we may prayerfully remember the names of all mothers and grandmothers that are to be included in this Novena. As in past years, all Mother‟s Day envelopes that are submitted to us will be placed on the Altar Table throughout the month of May. Thanks to our Catechists A word of gratitude goes out to all those who have labored with love in the ministry of religious education this year. Countless students have benefitted from your gift of time in passing on the Catholic faith to the next generation. Thank you. May God reward your goodness! A special appreciation mass for Catechists will take place on Saturday, May 19th, at 8:00am. Report on the Holy Land Pilgrimage Father Davis‟s 10-day pilgrimage to the Holy Land will be departing on June 8th. Registration is now closed, but we are happy to acknowledge that 40 of our parishioners will be joining Father Davis and Sister Rosalie on this exciting trip to Israel. Lots of memories will be made. The next pilgrimage trip will soon be announced. Sponsor sought for a CHALICE In reviewing the sacred vessels that are owned by the parish, it is obvious that we need to obtain at least one new chalice for use at Holy Mass. Sacred vessels are expensive, but worth the investment. Given that a chalice is the vessel that holds the Blood of Christ, it is an extremely important acquisition for the patrimony of our parish. If you would like to sponsor, or be part of a sponsorship, for the purchase of a chalice, please contact Father Davis. The proposed chalice for purchase will cost approximately $3300. We are working on a discount. Memorializations are welcome. Thanks for your consideration. Confirmation on Wednesday This coming Wednesday, May 16t at 7:00pm, the Church of the Little Flower will welcome Bishop Pierre Antonine Paulo from Haiti to confer upon our children the Sacrament of Confirmation. All are welcome to this beautiful liturgy, invoking the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon members of our parish family. Pastor’s Easter Season Lecture “Different prayer Forms for Different Personality Types” will be the topic of the next Pastor‟s lecture to be held on Monday, May 21st, at 7:30pm in Comber Hall. Bring a pen. The interactive presentation will be great fun, as we learn about ourselves and the major trends in Catholic spirituality. 12th Annual St. Theresa’s Fishing Tournament Please join us at the 12 th Annual St. Theresa Fishing Tournament taking place on Saturday, May 19th at the Key Biscayne Yacht Club. There will be good music, food, drinks, and fun children‟s activities to enjoy in support of a great cause. Nuevos Feligreses ¡Bienvenidos!
