El próximo mes de Agosto se desarrollará el Workshop de Verano 2016 en el Espai Barberí
(Olot, España), sede de RCR Arquitectes y RCR Bunka Fundación Privada. Organizado por
RCR LAB·A en colaboración con RCR Bunka Fundación Privada, se combinan investigación y
docencia con cultura y pensamiento desde un espíritu humanista y transversal.
El Espai Barberí, una antigua fundición artística recuperada por RCR Arquitectes, ofrece la
oportunidad de vivir durante un mes un espacio donde se refleja su pensamiento y arquitectura.
Este lugar inspirador será el punto de encuentro de los participantes de los tres cursos que
compartirán como punto de intersección actividades artísticas paralelas en colaboración con
el Festival de danza Sismògraf promocionado por el Institut de Cultura de la Ciudad de Olot,
con la participación de la coreógrafa Àngels Margarit, Premio Nacional de Danza 2010.
Como en las ediciones anteriores, el Espai Barberí ofrecerá un programa cultural abierto al
público general compuesto por un ciclo de conferencias con la participación, entre otros,
de Juan Carlos Sancho e Soledad Madridejos (Sancho-Madridejos Architecture Office),
Enric Battle (Battle i Roig Arquitectes) y Eduardo Souto de Moura (Premio Pritzker 2011), y
la exposición "Tránsito por la escenografía española contemporánea", cedida por Acción
Cultural Española (AC/E), con una conferencia de su comisario, el escenógrafo vasco José
Luis Raymond.
Del 1 al 26 de agosto tendrá lugar la novena edición del Workshop Internacional de Arquitectura
y Paisaje. El curso está dirigido a arquitectos y estudiantes, contando anualmente con más de
sesenta participantes venidos de veinte países diferentes. El Workshop está acreditado por la
Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona (UPC Barcelona-Tech), y cuenta con
la colaboración de la Universidad Nebrija de Madrid. El workshop se centra en la vivencia de
una experiencia directa de los participantes, dando a conocer el territorio donde ha arraigado
la obra de RCR Arquitectes, con el objetivo de entender su relación con el lugar y el paisaje,
a la vez de compartir y transmitir una actitud ante la vida, la arquitectura y la creatividad,
poniendo en práctica sus métodos de trabajo.
Del 15 al 26 de agosto se desarrollarán paralelamente el cuarto Workshop Internacional
de Audiovisual y Fotografía y del 16 al 26 de agosto el primer Workshop Internacional de
Escenografía que constituye una novedad en esta edición. Centrados en la arquitectura y el
espacio, constan de sesiones teóricas y prácticas. La aproximación a la fotografía corre a
cargo del reconocido fotógrafo japonés Hisao Suzuki, la introducción al lenguaje audiovisual
está tutorizada por Júlia de Balle, Alba Domènech e Iván Pintor, profesor de tendencias del
cine contemporáneo en la Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) en Barcelona, mientras que los
conocimientos sobre escenografía las trasmitirá el prestigioso escenógrafo Alfons Flores,
cuyo trabajo abarca escenografías para teatro y ópera, diseño de escenografías urbanas y
diseño de grandes eventos.

Next August will take place the Summer Workshop 2016 in the Barberí Space (Olot, Spain),
headquarters of RCR Arquitectes and RCR Bunka Private Foundation. Organized by RCR LAB•A
in collaboration with RCR Bunka Private Foundation, there combine research and teaching with
culture and thought in a humanist and cross-cultural spirit.
The Barberí Space, an ancient art Foundry recovered by RCR Arquitectes, offers the opportunity
to live for a month a space that reflects their thinking and architecture. This inspiring place will
be the meeting point for participants of three courses who will share artistic activities driven
by Sismògraf Dance Festival promoted by the Institute of Culture of the City of Olot, with the
participation of choreographer Àngels Margarit, Spanish National Dance Award 2010, as point
of intersection.
As in previous editions, the Barberí Space will offer a cultural programme open to the general
public and made up of a series of conferences with the participation, among others, of Juan
Carlos Sancho and Soledad Madridejos (Sancho-Madridejos Architecture Office), Enric Battle
(Battle i Roig Arquitectes) and Eduardo Souto de Moura (2011 Pritzker Prize), and the exhibition
"Transit Through Contemporary Spanish Scenography", courtesy of Spanish Cultural Action
(AC/E) , with a conference of its curator, the Basque scenographer José Luis Raymond.
From 1 to 26 August will take place the 9th edition of the International Workshop of
Architecture and Landscape. The course is aimed at architects and students, with more
than sixty participants from twenty different countries. The Workshop has the accreditation
by the Barcelona School of Architecture (UPC-Barcelona Tech), and has the support of the
Nebrija University from Madrid. The workshop encourages a collaborative experience of the
participants, while exploring the territory where the work of RCR Arquitectes is rooted, with the
aim of understanding their relationship with place and landscape, at the same time sharing
and transmitting an attitude to life, architecture and creativity, putting into practice its working
methods.
From 15 to 26 August will be held alongside the fourth International Workshop of Audiovisual
and Photography and from 16 to 26 August the first International Workshop of Scenography
which is a novelty in this edition. Focusing on architecture and space, they consist of
theoretical sessions and practices. The approach to photography is run by renowned Japanese
photographer Hisao Suzuki, introduction to audiovisual language is being tutored by Júlia de
Balle, Alba Domènech and Iván Pintor, Professor of trends in contemporary cinema at the
Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona, while knowledge about Scenography will be
transmitted by the prestigious scenographer Alfons Flores, whose work includes scenographies
for theatre and opera, the design of Urban Scenography and the design of large events.

Concept and philosophy
El Workshop de Verano LAB·A nace de una manera de entender la Arquitectura desde un
espíritu humanista y una mirada amplia de la complejidad del pensamiento. La coexistencia
en un espacio y un tiempo concreto de diferentes disciplinas creativas generará sinergias
para el enriquecimiento mutuo entre las partes. La creatividad debe estar en el origen del
concepto, presente en el momento inicial donde damos respuesta a la pregunta que nos
formulan, y debe ser compartida por todos los participantes, siendo el hilo conductor de todo
el proceso. Todo es fruto de la creatividad.
RCR LAB·A is born from a way of understanding Architecture with a humanistic spirit and a broad
view of the complexity of thought. The coexistence in a specific space and time, of different
creative disciplines will generate synergies for mutual enrichment between different parts.
Creativity must be at the origin of the concept, present from the first instant when we answer
the question that was asked and should be shared by all participants, who have presence in the
whole process. Everything is the result of creativity.

Organization
El Workshop de Verano, organizado por RCR LAB·A en colaboración con RCR BUNKA Fundació
Privada, tiene el objetivo de establecer un punto de actividad cultural independiente, lejos de
los centros tradicionales de las grandes ciudades, participando en la formación de nuevos
modelos de intercambio como fomento, comunicación y potenciación de la valoración de la
arquitectura y el paisaje, las artes y la cultura.
Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem y Ramon Vilalta son arquitectos desde el año 1987 y desde
1988 trabajan juntos, ahora bajo el nombre de RCR ARQUITECTES, en su ciudad natal Olot.
Son Premio Nacional de Cultura en Arquitectura 2005 de la Generalitat Catalunya, Chevalier
de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres 2008 de la République Française, Miembros honoríficos por
la AIA American Institute of Architecture 2010, Premio Internacional 2011 “Belgian Building
Awards”, Miembros honoríficos por el RIBA Royal Institute of British Architects 2012 y Medalla
de Oro de l’Académie d’Architecture Française 2015. Desde el año 1989 son arquitectos
asesores del Parque Natural de la Zona Volcánica de la Garrotxa y han sido profesores de
Urbanismo y Arquitectura del Paisaje (1989-2001, Vilalta) y de Proyectos (1992-2004, Pigem).
Después de una trayectoria concentrada en buscar su propia manera de expresarse y de
entender la arquitectura, RCR abre las puertas de su mundo con la voluntad de transmitir toda
la ilusión y aproximar su mensaje y espíritu a todas las personas que participen. Para ello se
concibió el Espai Barberí, donde RCR Arquitectes lleva a cabo su tarea docente.
The Summer Workshop, organized by RCR LAB·A in collaboration with RCR BUNKA Fundació
Privada, aims establishing an independent point of cultural activity, far from the traditional
centers of large cities, participating in the creation of new patterns of exchange as development
and communication, enhancing the assessment of architecture and landscape, arts and culture.
Architects Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta opened their own studio RCR
ARQUITECTES in 1987 in Olot. They have achieved the National Award in Architecture in
Catalonia in 2005 and are Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the République
Française since 2008, Honorary Fellows of the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) since
2010, International Award 2011 “Belgian Building Awards”, Honorary Fellows by the RIBA Royal
Institute of British Architects 2012 and most recently achieved the Gold Medal by Académie
d’Architecture Française 2015. Since 1989 they have been architectural consultants to the
Natural Park of National Interest, in the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa. During their careers they
have tutored in Urbanism (1989-2001, Vilalta) and Studio Projects (1992-2004, Pigem).
After a career focused on finding their own way of expressing themselves and understanding
architecture, RCR opens the doors of their world with the desire to convey their entire excitement,
approach its message and spirit to everyone involved. In order to do so, Espai Barberí was
created, where RCR Arquitectes carries out their teaching vocation.

Espai Barberí
The Barberí Space
Espai Barberí es la ilusión de estar en un lugar próximo a la manera de entender nuestra
arquitectura. Lo nuevo dialoga con lo existente, la relación con el exterior, el paso del tiempo,
la historia del edificio. Esta atmosfera nos ayuda a llevar a cabo nuestra arquitectura y a
transmitirla. Al mismo tiempo nos permite disponer de diferentes espacios, diferentes
mundos dentro de uno. La fundición Barberí, con más de cien años de historia, tuvo una gran
proyección internacional y colaboró con escultores de renombre como Juan Muñoz, Josep
Miret, Pablo Gargallo, Eudald Serra, Josep Viladomat, Rosa Serra, Josep Llimona, Joan Farrés,
Jaume Plensa o Josep Clarà. Se fundieron en Barberí campanas que se encuentran en iglesias
de todo el mundo o esculturas como las caballerizas de Gargallo del Estadio Olímpico o el
Sagrado Corazón del Tibidabo, ambos en Barcelona.
‘Materializar un sueño: encontrar un espacio donde poder soñar. Con encuentros, discusiones,
reflexiones, silencio, jardín, historia, y... oler y respirar. Para crear: la arquitectura y el paisaje.
Para compartir: nosotros y muchos más. La antigua fundición Barberí se presenta cargada de
humo (fuego extinguido) en paredes, techos y suelos... junto al olor y al color y a las chimeneas
de los hornos. La tierra, el fuego y el aire están presentes. Establecer aquí nuestro mundo, los
árboles y los helechos en el jardín. Dejar que la atmósfera nos envuelva y añadir nuestra huella
en la historia de este espacio que tantas esculturas fundió.’ RCR
In Espai Barberí we can feel the new dialoguing with the existing, the relation with the exterior, the
flowing of time, the history of the building. This atmosphere helps us carry out our architecture
and to pass it on. At the same time, it allows us to have different spaces, different worlds within.
The Barberí foundry, with over a hundred years of history, had a great international projection
and collaborated with renowned sculptors as Juan Muñoz, Josep Miret, Pablo Gargallo, Eudald
Serra, Josep Viladomat, Rosa Serra, Josep Llimona, Joan Farres, Jaume Plensa or Josep Clara.
The pieces melted in this foundry can be found around the world: innumerous bells for churches
as well as sculptures such as the stables from Gargallo, in the Olympic Stadium or the Sacred
Heart of Tibidabo, both in Barcelona.
“To materialize a dream: to find a space where to dream. With meetings, discussions, reflections,
silence, garden, history and... smell and breathe. To create: architecture and landscape. To
share: us and many more. The old foundry Barberí shows its walls, ceilings and floors darkened
by smoke (fire extinguished)... together with the smell, the color and the chimneys of the
furnaces. The earth, fire and air are present. Let the atmosphere involve us and add our mark
on the history of this place that so many sculptures founded.” RCR

Olot y el Parque Natural
Olot and the Natural Park
La ciudad de Olot es la capital de la comarca de la Garrotxa, situada en el noreste de la
península Ibérica, entre la costa del Mediterráneo y los Pirineos, y a una hora de Barcelona.
Olot está rodeada por el Parque Natural de la Zona Volcánica de La Garrotxa, un paisaje único
definido por el mejor vulcanismo de la península ibérica, por un relieve y un clima húmedo que
le confiere unos bosques de vegetación variada, y por una naturaleza humanizada con respeto
y equilibrio que conforman un rico mosaico agroforestal. Los valles de Olot se articulan a
través del curso del río Fluvià y su entorno natural y industrial, las masías dispersas en el
paisaje, los diferentes núcleos urbanos, las huertas y los caminos históricos y paisajísticos.
La arquitectura histórica de Olot tiene ejemplos de arquitectura renacentista, barroca o
modernista (Casa Solà-Morales o Gaietà Vila) y un urbanismo ejemplar en el ensanche
Malagrida, una referencia en los modelos de ciudad jardín.
Olot is the capital of the region of La Garrotxa, located in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula,
between the Mediterranean coast and the Pyrenees, one hour away from Barcelona. The town
is surrounded by the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, a unique landscape defined by the
most interesting volcanic ecosystem of the Iberian Peninsula, topography and a humid climate
that allows forests of varied vegetation and a humanized nature, with respect and balance that
makes up a rich agricultural and forestall mosaic. The valleys of Olot are articulated through
the course of the river Fluvià and its natural and industrial environment, farmsteads scattered
in the landscape, the small towns, the orchards and the historical paths through the landscape.
In terms of historical architecture, Olot has examples of Renaissance, Baroque, Modernism
(Casa Solà-Morales or Gaietà Vila) and an interesting example of urbanism, in the expansion of
Malagrida neighborhood, a reference in the model of the garden city.

Aims
La vivencia de una experiencia directa de los participantes, dando a conocer el territorio
donde ha arraigado la obra de RCR y entender su relación con el lugar y el paisaje.
Compartir y transmitir una actitud ante la vida, la arquitectura y la creatividad, que ha
llevado consigo RCR durante su trayectoria. Aprender y poner en práctica sus métodos de
trabajo.
Reflexionar y desarrollar temáticas de investigación que sean de interés sobre la
Arquitectura y el Paisaje.
The workshop focuses on the direct experience of the participants, from the territory
approach and knowledge of the work site of RCR and understand their relationship with the
place and the landscape.
Sharing the attitude towards life, architecture and creativity, which has brought with RCR
during their career. Learn and implement its working methods.
Introduce the territory which has rooted the work
Develop research topics that are of interest for Architecture and Landscape.
Estructura del curso
Course structure
El Taller Creativo consiste en la realización de proyectos de arquitectura y paisaje en grupos,
con la crítica semanal de RCR y el apoyo de tutores. Los alumnos presentan sus proyectos
en un acto abierto a invitados y colaboradores. El taller cuenta con la intervención, en las
sesiones de corrección, de geólogos, ecólogos, paisajistas y otras personas vinculadas a
diferentes instituciones.
El Laboratorio de Ideas contiene las ponencias de conferenciantes invitados.
Las visitas de la obra de RCR Arquitectes se realizan los sábados, acompañados por los
mismos arquitectos.
The Creative Atelier consists in the development of an architecture and landscape project,
a theoretical and practical exercise on a real case. The students will have the support of
tutors and the accompaniment of RCR Arquitectes (Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon
Vilalta).
The Lectures will contain presentations and interventions by guest lecturers.
The Works Visit will be held on Saturdays, accompanied by the architects.

Teaching Team
Igor Peraza es actualmente profesor visitante asistente en la Universidad Americana de
Sharjah. Oriundo de Caracas, Venezuela, Peraza es arquitecto por la Universidad Central de
Venezuela, recibió una beca para hacer su maestría en arquitectura en la Universidad de
Hokkaido en Sapporo y es doctor arquitecto por la Universidad de Kumamoto, Kyushu,
Japón. Profesionalmente, trabajó durante cinco años en el Atelier de Arata Isozaki y dirigió el
proyecto Domus (Museo de la Humanidad) en La Coruña, España. En el año 2000 se trasladó
a Barcelona para trabajar con Miralles Tagliabue como Director del proyecto Mercado de Santa
Caterina. Peraza ha dirigido la oficina de Shanghai de EMBT donde estuvo a cargo de una
multitud de proyectos como el Pabellón de España en la Expo Universal de 2010, el nuevo
Campus de la Universidad de Fudan en Shanghai y el Museo para el pintor chino Zhang
Daqian. Anteriormente ha dado clases en la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, el Instituto
Europeo de Diseño y ha sido profesor visitante de la Universidad Libanesa Americana de 2013
a 2015. Igor Peraza has been appointed as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the American University of
Sharjah.
A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Peraza holds a BSc of Architecture from the Universidad Central
de Venezuela, received a scholarship to do his Master of Architecture at Hokkaido University in
Sapporo, and obtained his Ph.D at the University of Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan. Professionally,
he worked for five years at the Atelier of Arata Isozaki and led the Domus (Museum of Mankind)
project on-site in La Coruña, Spain. In 2000 he relocated to Barcelona to work with Miralles
Tagliabue as Director of the Santa Caterina Market project. Peraza went on to serve as Director
of EMBT's Shanghai office were he led a multitude of projects including the Spanish Pavilion at
the 2010 World Expo, the New Campus of Fudan University in Shanghai, and the Museum for
the Chinese painter Zhang Daqian. He has previously taught at the Polytechnic University of
Catalonia, the European Institute of Design, and served as a visiting professor at the Lebanese
American University from 2013 to 2015.
Emiliano Roia (Roma, 1971) es arquitecto por la Universidad La Sapienza de Roma. En el año
2001 funda el despacho de arquitectura MORQ junto a Matteo Monteduro y Andrea Quagliola,
dedicado a la experimentación en arquitectura contemporánea a nivel práctico y en el campo

Emiliano Roia (Rome, 1971) graduated in Architecture from the University La Sapienza in
Rome. In 2001 he founded the architecture studio MORQ together with Matteo Monteduro
and Andrea Quagliola, dedicated to the experimentation in contemporary architecture and
in the field of research and teaching. In 2007 he moved to Perth, Australia, establishing the
second headquarters of MORQ and continued there his career as an architect, lecturer and
photographer. In 2008 he received an Award for Excellence as a teacher in the Faculty of
Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts. In 2010 he received the International CLIP Award

Joan Puigcorbé (Barcelona, 1967) es arquitecto por la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura
de Barcelona desde 2000. A partir del año 1995 implanta el estudio de arquitectura PAAS en
Barcelona y Ripoll. En los años 2003 al 2010 colabora con RCR Arquitectes, y funda, en el 2008,
Costa Rica Natural Design, compañía dedicada a la promoción en Costa Rica. Ha trabajado en
proyectos de diversa índole en varios países. Ha ganado concursos internacionales y su obra
ha sido reconocida en los premios FAD, 2013, premios de Girona 2005 y 2013; finalista en
Convención Nacional de Arquitectura Technal, 2005; premio “René Frank” Costa Rica 2012.
Ha presentado sus proyectos en conferencias en diversos países y su obra se ha publicado
internacionalmente. Participa desde 2014 como tutor en el RCR LAB·A.

Salvador Figueras Aguirre (Barcelona, 1980) es arquitecto licenciado en la Escuela Técnica

asistente del Taller de Proyectos Urbanos de 4º curso en la ETSALS desde el 2008. Desde
2009 es arquitecto en RCR Arquitectes, colaborando en diferentes proyectos, como el

IV International Workshop of Audiovisual Arts and Photography
El workshop tiene la voluntad de ampliar los conocimientos del audiovisual y la fotografía,
centrados en la arquitectura y el espacio. El curso se desarrollará a partir del acercamiento al
territorio y a la arquitectura de RCR y combinará la reflexión en torno a las artes visuales y su
puesta en práctica a través de un trabajo creativo.
The workshop aims to broaden the knowledge of audiovisual and photography, focusing
on architecture and space. The course will run from the approach to the territory and the
architecture of RCR and combined reflection on Visual Arts and its implementation in practice
through a creative work.
Los básicos

Para garantizar un acompañamiento cercano por parte de los tutores, el número de
participantes será de un máximo de 16.
El nivel inicial de los participantes es indiferente.
La docencia será en castellano e inglés, en función del origen de los participantes.
Los participantes deben traer su propia cámara, trípode (si lo tienen) y ordenador portátil.

Course structure
El workshop se articula en tres partes: Aproximación a la Fotografía, Introducción al Lenguaje
Audiovisual y la Práctica tutorizada. En la primera semana se desarrollarán las dos primeras
partes y la segunda se dedicará a la práctica.
The workshop is divided into three parts: Approach to Photography, Introduction to Audiovisual
Language and mentored Practice. The first two parts will be held in the first week and the
second will be devoted to the practice.
La Aproximación a la Fotografía será dirigida por Hisao Suzuki, que planteará un trabajo en
torno al despertar de los sentidos (oído, vista, tacto, olfato y gusto), estimulando la creación
de imágenes que nos hagan experimentar el “querer tocar”, el “querer escuchar” y el “querer
estar en ese lugar”.
The Approach to Photography will be directed by Hisao Suzuki, who will pose a work around the
awakening of the senses (hearing, sight, touch, smell and taste), stimulating the creation of
images that make us experience "wanting to touch", "wanting to listen" and "wanting to be in
that place".

Course structure
La práctica consistirá en un recorrido por el trabajo profesional del reportaje de arquitectura,
que irá desde el uso y funcionalidad de la cámara hasta la presentación de las fotografías. El
trabajo de campo se realizará en entornos y bajo condicionantes distintos para maximizar el
aprendizaje e impulsar la capacidad de adaptación.
Practice will consist of an overview of the professional work of reporting architecture, that will
go from the use and functionality of the camera until the presentation of the photographies.
The field work will take place in environments and under different conditions to maximize
learning and promote adaptability.
La Introducción al Lenguaje Audiovisual correrá a cargo de Júlia de Balle, Alba Domènech
e Ivan Pintor y cubrirá, a lo largo de diversas sesiones acompañadas de proyecciones y
ejercicios, las bases del lenguaje audiovisual, el storytelling y la narración secuencial, para
proporcionar a los participantes herramientas con las que crear piezas audiovisuales.
Introduction to Audiovisual language will be borne by Julia de Balle, Alba Domènech and Ivan
Pintor and transmit, alongside several sessions accompanied by projections and exercises, the
bases of the audiovisual language, storytelling and sequential narration, to provide participants
with tools with which to create audiovisual pieces.

Hisao Suzuki (1957, Yamagata, Japón). Fotógrafo residente en Barcelona desde hace más de
30 años, estudió fotografía en el Tokyo College of Photography (Tokyo Sougia Shashin Gakko) e
inicia su trayectoria profesional con el fotógrafo Tahru Minowa, especializado en gastronomía.
Su relación con Barcelona y el interés por la arquitectura está íntimamente ligada a la obra
de Antoni Gaudí. A partir de una exposición del célebre fotógrafo Eiko Hosoe sobre Gaudí
en 1978 en el Yokohama City Hall, se adentra en el modernismo catalán y, posteriormente,
en la arquitectura contemporánea a través de la colaboración con el arquitecto japonés
Arata Isozaki, autor del Palau Sant Jordi para los Juegos Olímpicos de 1992 en Barcelona,
documentando el proceso de construcción del palacio de deportes. Desde 1993 colabora con
la revista de arquitectura “El Croquis”, convirtiéndose en el principal fotógrafo de la publicación
y contribuyendo significativamente al reconocimiento como el medio de difusión de mayor
prestigio internacional de arquitectura contemporánea.
Dentro de las artes visuales, la fotografía se diferencia de otras disciplinas por su vinculación
con la realidad, un hecho concreto, la existencia de un modelo. La mirada de Suzuki a la
arquitectura deriva de las visiones creadas por Eiko Hosoe sobre Gaudí hacia una reflexión
sobre el espacio. El espacio como hecho tridimensional conlleva una complejidad intrínseca ya
que el formato de la fotografía es una imagen en dos dimensiones. De ahí que la interpretación
del fotógrafo de una obra arquitectónica sea determinante. En las antípodas se encuentra
una mirada que desea reflejar con la mayor fidelidad el espacio arquitectónico y su entorno,
o su contrario, la interpretación personal de detalles que realzan una visión particular. La
obra fotográfica de Hisao Suzuki representa la postura del testimonio fiel y minuciosamente
documentado de la realidad.
Hisao Suzuki is a Japanese photographer of architecture who lives in Barcelona. He was born in
Yamagata, a northern province of Japan in 1957. He studied photography at the Tokyo College
of Photography (Tokyo Sougo Shashin Gakko) and worked for a photographer Tohru Minowa.
After a few years of practice and working as a photographer at Minowa’s studio specialized in
gastronomy, he decided to go to Barcelona to see the works of Gaudí in 1982 and since then,
he has been living there for more than 30 years. His decision to make a trip to Barcelona at that
time was not an accident but had a reason. Before that in 1978, at Yokohama City Hall, Suzuki
had visited an exhibition of prestigious photographer Eiko Hosoe. The images of Gaudí’s works
were the trigger for him to have an interest in Catalonian architecture. Started from Gaudí’s
works, he began to take photographs of architecture in Barcelona and gradually became
fascinated by the world of Catalan Modernisme, and later than that, contemporary architecture.
His first assigned works on contemporary architecture was for the Palau Sant Jordi, a sports
stadium for Barcelona Olympic game designed by a Japanese Architect Arata Isozaki. He made
photographic documentary of the building as a record of the process of its construction. One
year later, he started to collaborate with an architectural journal “El Croquis”, and soon became
their principal photographer. Since then, “El Croquis” has become one of the most prestigious
and international architectural media until today. To be professional, one must always keep
challenging. In Suzuki’s case, the impact of Eiko Hosoe’s vision of Gaudí’s works led him into
a new world of photography of ‘space’ defined by architecture. For him, photography is based
on reality, on some concrete facts, and on the existence of models. Perhaps it is the difference
from the other kind of arts. But when we question about a photography of a space, there is a
problem. In fact the space has three dimensions, and the photographer’s ultimate realization
- the image - has only two dimensions. A photographer cannot take the photographs of the
space as it is, but must interpret the reality. It is complicated but crucial fact of this profession.
Then, a photographer has to choose one of these two stances: either try to demonstrate an
image of the reality and its environment, or make an image as a work that the photographer
himself has created. In Suzuki’s case the former is true. For him, his works are the trials of
making testimony and documentation of reality.

Barcelona (2009). Después de terminar sus estudios Berlín vuelve a su ciudad natal de Olot y
se une al equipo de RCR Arquitectes, primero como coordinadora de comunicación y después
como creativa audiovisual. Ha dirigido y codirigido dos documentales y actualmente combina
trabajos para clientes externos como realizadora y editora con sus propios proyectos.
Júlia de Balle is an audiovisual communicator graduated at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) in
Barcelona (2009). After finishing her degree in Berlin, she returns to her hometown Olot (Girona)
and joins RCR Arquitectes as communication coordinator and, later on, as audiovisual creative.
She has directed and co-directed two documentary films and currently combines works for
third party clients as filmmaker and editor with her own projects.
Alba Domènech es licenciada en comunicación audiovisual por la UPF el 2009 y postgraduada
en Innovación en Creación de Contenidos Audiovisuales por la UOC el 2012. Desde 2013
colabora en el Workshop de Audiovisual y Fotografía de RCR Arquitectes y en la actualidad
combina el trabajo como freelance audiovisual con la de dirección de comunicación de la ONG
aecc-Catalunya contra el Càncer.
Alba Domènech is an audiovisual communicator who graduated at the UPF in Barcelona and
later studied a postgraduate in Innovation in Audiovisual Content Creation at the UOC. She
combines the freelance audiovisual work for public organizations and private sector and a
communication management job at the NGO aecc-Catalunya contra el Càncer. She co-directed
a documentary and has worked in other film documentary.
Ivan Pintor es Doctor en Comunicación Audiovisual y profesor agregado del Departamento de
Comunicación de la Universidad Pompeu Fabra (UPF). Con sus escritos, ha participado en más
de una treintena de libros, entre los cuales Oshima (2013), La Strada di Fellini (Liguori, 2013),
Poéticas del gesto en el cine contemporáneo (Intermedio, 2013), Todas las cartas (CCCB,
2012), Le Cinéma de Julio Medem (Publications de la Sorbonne), Universo Lynch (Festival de
Sitges) o Naomi Kawase (Filmoteca). Ha dirigido numerosos ciclos para CaixaFórum, así como
el congreso Mutaciones del gesto (UPF, 2012), ha realizado diversas piezas audiovisuales para
museos y televisión, escribe habitualmente en el suplemento Cultura/s de La Vanguardia y ha
impartido clases en universidades de Italia, Argentina y Colombia.
Ivan Pintor is Doctor of Audiovisual Communication and Senior lecturer at the Departament
of Communication at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). He has contributed to more than 30
books, including Oshima (2013), La Strada di Fellini (Liguori, 2013), Poéticas del gesto en
el cine contemporáneo (Intermedio, 2013), Todas las cartas (CCCB, 2012), Le Cinéma de

Con la escenografía se crean espacios efímeros, espacios que debido a su corta vida
deben expresar, sin concesiones a la duda, una intención, una idea. Y la idea no es gratuita:
normalmente acompaña a una interpretación de teatro, de ópera, de danza. Y si hay una
interpretación, hay intérpretes; aunque no sólo actores, cantantes o bailarines: el escenógrafo
es un intérprete. El espacio que crea explica el sentido de algo que, a su vez, podría ser
entendido de otra manera, expresa de un modo personal una realidad. El espacio expresa, en
definitiva, una manera de entender una historia humana.
Scenography creates ephemeral spaces, spaces that should be expressed, without
concessions to the doubt, an intention, an idea due to their short life. And the idea is not
gratituous: it accompanies usually an interpretation of theatre, opera, dance. And if there
is an interpretation, there are interpreters, although not only actors, singers or dancers: the
scenographer is an interpreter. The space he creates explains the sense of something which, in
turn, could be understood otherwise, expresses a reality from a personal point of view. Space
reveals, in short, a way of understanding a human story.

Alfons Flores (1957) comienza su carrera profesional como escenógrafo en 1978 en el grupo
GAT de l’Hospitalet del Llobregat (Barcelona), del que fue cofundador. Su trabajo abarca
escenografías para teatro, óperas, escenografía urbana y grandes eventos, colaborando con
directores como Àlex Ollé (La Fura dels Baus), Calixto Bieito, Joan Anton Rechi, Joan Lluís
Bozzo, Carlos Wagner y Guy Joosten. Àlex Ollé (La Fura dels Baus), Calixto Bieito, Joan Lluís

Su labor teatral le ha llevado a estrenar en teatros como el Teatre Nacional de Catalunya,

Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Abbey Theatre, Festspillene i Bergen, Deutsches N. Theater S.
Weimar, etc.
Entre sus escenografías para teatro más significativas destacan: La casa de Bernarda Alba
(1998), Bodas de sangre (2001), La Celestina (2004), Peer Gynt (2006), Los Persas, réquiem
por un soldado (2007), Tirant lo Blanc (2007), La casa dels cors trencats (2009), Nit de reis
(2010), Afinidades electivas (2011), Flames a la fosca (2013) y Ensam (2015).
Su labor operística le ha llevado a estrenar en teatros como el Gran Teatre del Liceu, Teatro
Real, English National Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Komische Oper, La Monnaie, Sydney Opera

Finalmente, su labor para escenografías urbanas y grandes eventos le ha llevado a participar,
entre otros, en la Fiesta de Fin Milenio en la plaza Quintana de Santiago de Compostela,
en el espectáculo inaugural del Forum Universal de les Cultures de Barcelona 2004, en el
espectáculo inaugural de la Exposición Internacional de Zaragoza de 2008, en el espectáculo
ofrecido en la Exposición Universal de Shanghai de 2010 titulado The Window of the City y en
la instalación de la estación Onze de Setembre del metro de Barcelona.
Actualmente está preparando las óperas Norma (Londres), La Bohème (Turín), Alceste (Lyon),
Jeanne d’Arc (Frankfurt) y Madama Butterfly (Düsseldorf), el nuevo musical Scaramouche
(Barcelona) y un macro-espectáculo al aire libre (Beijing).
Su trabajo ha sido reconocido con el Premio de la Crítica de Barcelona de 1996, 1998 y 2009.
En el año 2000 recibió el Irish Times Theater Award a la mejor Escenografía por Las Comedias
Bárbaras.
Alfons Flores (1957) begins to work as a set designer in 1978 at the group GAT, from l’Hospitalet
de Llobregat (Barcelona), which he was one of the founders. His works include sets for theater,
opera, urban set design and big events, working with such directors as Àlex Ollé (La Fura dels
Baus), Calixto Bieito, Joan Lluís Bozzo, Carlos Wagner, Joan Anton Rechi and Guy Joosten.
His work at stages let him work at such theatres as Teatre Nacional de Catalunya, Teatro María
Guerrero, Festival de Teatro Clásico de Mérida, Edinburgh International Festival, Birmingham
Repertory Theatre, Abbey Theatre, Festspillene i Bergen, Deutsches N. Theater S. Weimar, etc.

His works for big events and urban spaces let him take part in the Milennium’s End Celebration
at Santiago de Compostela, in the opening show of the Universal Forum of Cultures-Barcelona
2004, in the opening show of the International Exhibition-Zaragoza 2008 , in the show
performanced at the Universal Exhibition-Shanghai 2010 named The window of the city and
the installation at the station Onze de Setembre of Barcelona’s Underground.

Carles Berga es licenciado en arquitectura por la Universidad Ramon Llull de Barcelona.
Empieza su actividad profesional en 2004 combinando la arquitectura y la escenografía.
Desde 2005 colabora creando escenografías para opera, teatro y grandes eventos con
distintos artistas como Alfons Flores, Lluís Danés, Franc Aleu, Valentina Carrasco, etc. Durante
estos últimos años ha diseñado escenografías para la Opera de Roma, Opera de Lyon, Opera
Nacional du Rhin, Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires.
Carles Berga has a Degree of Architecture at the Ramon Llull University of Barcelona. He
started his professional activity in 2004 combining architecture and set design. Since 2005
collaborates with different artists like Alfons Flores, Lluís Danés, Franc Aleu, Valentina Carrasco,
etc, creating sets for opera, theatre and big events. In recent years he design sets for Opera di
Roma, Opera de Lyon, Opera National du Rhin, Teatro Colón Buenos Aires.
Carme Umbría (Granollers, Barcelona, 1964) es arquitecta por la Escola Tècnica Superior
d’Arquitectura de Barcelona y ha realizado proyectos de arquitectura e urbanismo. Desde
finales de 2011 trabaja en el estudio del escenógrafo Alfons Flores.
