Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
On Mother’s Day, each of us will have an opportunity to join in the Church’s sacred mission of charity through our donations to Catholic Charities Mother’s Day
Collection. Funds raised from the collection will be used to help struggling families and individuals living right in our own communities.
With 150 programs at 164 locations throughout Cook and Lake Counties, Catholic Charities annually serves more than one million poor and vulnerable people of
all ages, races, religions and economic backgrounds. Catholic Charities helps people overcome the challenges of poverty, hunger, homelessness, joblessness, mental
illness, abuse, and aging. Low-income families, at-risk children, courageous veterans, and vulnerable seniors rely on Catholic Charities for food, clothing, shelter,
and a host of other services.
Supporting the extraordinary work of Catholic Charities takes on special significance during this JubileeYear of Mercy. By designating the JubileeYear of Mercy, Pope
Francis has provided us a graced opportunity to appreciate more deeply how the mercy of God shapes our lives and, at the same time, how we can bring that mercy
into the world through our own actions and the way we live our lives. Catholic Charities exemplifies how we are to transmit His love and compassion to our brothers
and sisters who are facing tremendous difficulties.
Mother’s Day is the one day set aside for Catholic Charities to request the financial support of each of us in the parishes. Please show your support for the great
mercy of the Church by contributing to Catholic Charities during the second collection, or make your donations directly to Catholic Charities at 721 N. LaSalle St.,

CONFIRMATION AT SAINT JOHN BERCHMANS
Confirmation will be celebrated at 7pm on Wednesday, May 6th. Please
keep these students in your prayers during these final weeks of preparation
and consider joining us at the Mass to share their Sacramental joy!
MINISTRY OF HOPE
During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we have been hearing much about
the corporal works of mercy, and how they give us a model of how
we should treat others. The St. John Berchmans’ Ministry of HOPE
(“Helping Other People Enthusiastically”) is one way we can put this
into practice in our own community. This ministry reaches out to
families in need of assistance. Volunteers provide meals for the sick,
homebound, or families going through hard times. Meals are also
brought to families with newborns, to help the new parents cope with
the demands of having a new baby in the home. If you’d like to help
with this valuable ministry, contact Peggy Roketenetz at proketentz@
stjohnberchmans.org. Please provide your name, email address, and

Help the Vulnerable: Urge Elected Leaders to Pass a State Budget
Every 30 seconds someone counts on Catholic Charities for
help. We are now asking for your help. Please lend your voice
to advocate for the State of Illinois to end its budget stalemate
and pass a budget that cares for the poor and most vulnerable
in our communities.
Please take time today to call your state elected officials with
this simple message, “I am a voter in your district. I am contacting
you on behalf of the poor and vulnerable people who depend on our
state’s safety net of human services, especially the more than 1 million
people served by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago.”
MASS INTENTIONS
All St. John Berchmans parishioners and friends are invited to request
Mass intentions for those who have died, for loved ones on their
birthdays or anniversaries, or for any other occasion or concern. As
the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the most powerful prayer
of the Church, this is a very effective way to honor the living or
pray for the dead.
Summer on the Square
The suggested donation for these Masses is $10 per Mass. We will
be limiting the number of intentions to two per Mass, so in order to
ensure availability of your requested day and time, please submit this
request to the rectory office as soon as possible. Intentions will be
added to the calendar on a first-come basis. Mass intentions are now
be accepted for all Masses through December 2017.

The fun continues throughout the evening with foods from
around the world, various musical performances on the
Church steps, and games and activities for the kids!

Tuesday May 3rd at 7PM.
Emergency Appeal: Earthquake in Ecuador
PROVIDING RELIEF TO FAMILIES FACING DEVASTATION
Raffle tickets will be on sale soon. If you can help with the
raffle sale or in anyway at Summer on the Square, signup sheets are available at the raffle sales table or you can
contact Joe D’Arco in the parish office. It will take the entire
community to make this event a success. Please consider
volunteering your time or purchasing a raffle ticket.
Over the weekend, a 7.8 magnitude Earthquake occurred along
the coast of Ecuador. Catholic Relief Services teams are on the
ground evaluating needs in the most affected areas for providing
emergency relief and support. Please consider donating to support
the families suffering loss and devastation. This work will continue
throughout the long recovery period. Thank you for your prayers.

En el Día de las Madres, cada uno de nosotros tenemos la oportunidad de unirnos con la Iglesia en su misión sagrada de la caridad, a través de nuestras donaciones a
la Colecta de Caridades Católicas en el Día de las Madres. Fondos recaudados por esta colecta, serán usados para ayudar a familias e individuos viviendo en nuestras
comunidades enfrentando dificultades.

UN AÑO DE MISERICORDIA
REGOCIJARSE
Cuando la misericordia de Dios entra en
nuestra vida y nos encuentra, tenemos
motivos de sobra para regocijarnos. Es
más, Dios se regocija al ver que sus hijos
e hijas, que estaban perdidos, ahora le
pertenecen solo a él otra vez. Habrá
más fiesta en el cielo por un pecador que se
arrepienta que por noventa y nueve justos que
no necesiten arrepentirse (Lucas 15:7).

MINISTERIO DE ESPERANZA
Ayudar a los Vulnerables
Durante este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, hemos escuchado mucho
acerca de las obras de misericordia corporales y la forma en cómo
debemos tratar a los demás. El Ministerio HOPE (“ayudar a otra personas
con entusiasmo”)de Juan Berchmans es una forma que podemos poner en
práctica en nuestra propia comunidad. Este ministerio se comunica con
las familias que necesitan asistencia. Los voluntarios pueden proporcionar
comidas para los enfermos, inválidos, o familias que están pasando por
momentos difíciles. Las comidas también pueden ser enviadas a las familias
con recién nacidos, para ayudar a los nuevos padres con las exigencias
de tener un nuevo bebé en la hogar. Si desea ayudar con este excelente
ministerio, póngase en contacto con Peggy Roketenetz en proketentz@
stjohnberchmans.org. Por favor proporcione su nombre, dirección de
correo electrónico y número de teléfono.
Cada 30 segundos alguien acude a Caridades Católicas por ayuda.
