Come, Let Me Love You
These are the words Jesus uses to call us into a deeper relationship with Him. During the Christmas season one of the refrains of the songs we sang read, “O come, let us adore
Him”. Soon we are entering into the Lenten season and will be
reflecting on His Passion. In the Agony in the Garden Jesus said,
“Stay here while I go over there to pray” and at the end of His time
in the Garden Jesus said to Peter, James and John, “So you had
not the strength to keep awake with me one hour?” (Mt26:36-42)
A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said,
“If you wish, you can make me clean.”
Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand,
touched him, and said to him,
“I do will it. Be made clean.”
The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.
Then, warning the him sternly, he dismissed him at once.
He said to him, “See that you tell no one anything,
but go, show yourself to the priest
and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed;
that will be proof for them.”
The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter.
He spread the report abroad
so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly.
He remained outside in deserted places,
and people kept coming to him from everywhere.
Mark 1:40-45
En aquel tiempo, se le acercó a Jesús un leproso para suplicarle
de rodillas: “Si tú quieres, puedes curarme”.
Jesús se compadeció de él, y extendiendo la mano, lo tocó y le
dijo: “¡Sí quiero: Sana!”
Inmediatamente se le quitó la lepra y quedó limpio.
Al despedirlo, Jesús le mandó con severidad: “No se lo cuentes a
nadie; pero para que conste, ve a presentarte al sacerdote y
ofrece por tu purificación lo prescrito por Moisés”.
Pero aquel hombre comenzó a divulgar tanto el hecho, que Jesús
no podía ya entrar abiertamente en la ciudad, sino que se
quedaba fuera, en lugares solitarios, a donde acudían a él de
todas partes.

to Rome and Northern Italy November 8th –
18th. The trip will include visits to the major
pilgrimage sites in Rome, a public audience
with Pope Francis (subject to availability),
Mass at the tomb of St. Francis of Assisi, and the Basilica
of St. Mark’s in Venice, among other sites. Registration,
cost, and further details will be available at the end of
February. Please consider taking advantage of this
wonderful opportunity!
These words are not singularly for the Apostles. Jesus is calling
each one of us to be with Him to “adore” and “wait” with Him. It is
in this silence Jesus transforms our hearts and spirits. Allowing
Jesus to love us is vital in developing a personal relationship with
Him.
You are invited to look into your hearts and see if Jesus is calling you to come, adore, wait and be with Him.
Here at St. Mark, Adoration is offered every Fri from 9 AM to 9
PM (with very few exceptions during the year). This is the place
where we come to “adore” and “wait” and let Jesus love us.

Bishop’s Annual Appeal Update
As of February 10, 2015, St Mark Catholic Church has
donations totaling $38,820 towards our parish goal of
$181,320 for the 2015 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Thanks to
all who have either mailed their pledges directly to the
Diocese or participated in our parish’s initial IN-PEW
solicitation February 7-8.
We also want to thank
parishioners who pledged prayers for the success of the
campaign and are counted towards our participation goal.
For all those who may have been away last weekend, or
who have not yet made a pledge, your participation is
greatly needed. Please keep in mind that because St.
Mark parish also has a Catholic School, we will receive
100% return on any funds raised over and above our goal
this year.
You can find pledge envelopes on a table in the
Gathering Space or stop by the Church Office any time to
pick up your pledge envelope and submit your gift. The
Diocesan website is also an alternative for those who
prefer an online process for donation or desire more details
on the outreach agencies our BAA supports.

Reflection on the Faith

“If you wish, you can make me clean”
Leprosy was a scourge… it literally ate away your very flesh, it took away your identity and purpose, (you were now just
“leper” and your only purpose was to cry out “Leper!” to anyone who came near); it made you an outcast – it separated you
from your loved ones and friends, from the community at large, and forced you to live like an animal in a cave. It was seen,
in Jesus’ day, as a punishment from God – as several stories from the Old Testament seem to indicate. And on top of
everything else, (as if all that weren’t bad enough), leprosy made you ritually unclean, and unable to participate in the
liturgical and sacrificial life of the people of God. Leprosy destroyed your life, little by little, and left you nothing to hope for
but the sleep of death. It is no wonder that the curing of leprosy was seen as one of the blessings that would mark the arrival
of the Messiah. (See Isaiah 35:3-8)
So it is not surprising when the leper – hearing of Jesus of Nazareth and of His deep teachings and mighty power, knowing
that only He can provide the healing and hope the leper needs – goes and falls on his knees before Jesus, and beseeches
Him: “If you will, you can make me clean.” “And Jesus, moved with pity, stretched out His hand and touched him…”
Here is a healing that takes place both physically and emotionally. The leper, because of his disease, suffered not only the
pain and hopelessness of his disease, but also the absolute lack of any human touch of comfort. Jesus, (who could have just
as easily healed the leper from a distance), intentionally stretches out His hand to TOUCH THE LEPER, and proclaim to
him: “I will; be clean.”
We, likewise, suffer from a disease that afflicts us, both body and soul, and seeks to rob us of our identity and purpose.. T his
“disease” makes us unclean, and seeks to separate us from the life of the community at large, from the love of family and
friends, and even from God. And apart from a miracle of healing, we would be completely without hope. But we, like the
leper, can fall to our knees, in the confessional, and cry out to Jesus, “If You will, You can make me clean”, knowing that H is
most Sacred Heart is full of mercy, and is moved with pity for us. We can go to Him, assured that He will always respond,
“I will; be clean.”

ANNOUNCING ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES
Prayer Shawl Ministry
Ladies from the parish meet on the 2nd and 4th
Wednesday of the month at 1:00pm in the library to knit or
crochet shawls for those in need of consolation for loss or
illness. If you would like more information or you would like
to participate, please contact Jacque Ennis 910 686-3659.
Paul Abbe, our Director of Religious Education, will be holding
classes for all those desiring Adult Confirmation. These classes
will begin TODAY, Feb. 15th, (the Sunday BEFORE Ash
Wednesday), and will meet in the Conference Room (Rm 7) at
10:45am, immediately after the 9:30am Mass. They will dismiss at
11:25am, in time for the 11:30 Mass. All those interested should
contact him BY EMAIL ([email protected]) and
provide name and phone number. A certificate of Baptism will also
need to be provided to begin the course. Students will also need
to purchase a copy of “The Compendium of the Catechism.”

The date for the Adult Confirmation for the Diocese of Raleigh
is Holy Trinity Sunday, May 31st. (The exact parish and time of
Mass are yet to be announced).

Join us for this Adult Ed Lenten Series, Tuesdays at 7pm,
beginning Shrove Tuesday, February 17th. Our Boy Scouts will
be holding their annual Pancake Supper that evening if you would
like to take part before class begins in Rooms 5 & 6. All other
sessions will be held in the Parish Hall and a light supper will
precede the lesson.

website). Participants will need to purchase the book 7 Secrets
of the Eucharist by Vinny Flynn. You may purchase this book
from your favorite bookseller or order from In His Name Catholic

Biblical/Scriptural Learning for Adults
Weekly Bible/Scripture studies are a staple of St. Mark Parish

The Monday Evening Adult Scripture Study of Mary – Virgin,

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The Word: Others see our joy in Jesus
Knowing what we know about leprosy and how people back in
Jesus’ time looked upon anyone with that affliction, one might
be surprised by the unusual behavior of the person with leprosy
in today’s Gospel. He captures our attention and we appreciate
what he teaches us about the power of faith. He teaches us not
to let anything keep us from Jesus, so things like soccer
practice, a sleepover, or a week at the beach will not keep us
from Mass each week.
This person also lets others see his faith. He shows us to let
others see our faith in Jesus. Finally, the person who is healed
of leprosy is as faithful in wellness as he is in illness; he
proclaims Jesus’ loving power while he is ill and after he is
healed. He teaches us to turn to Jesus with our needs and the
needs of others, and to praise Jesus in every life situation.
Living the Word—A Prayer Moment
Gentle Jesus, may everything we do in our daily lives
draw us closer to you in faith and love.
Questions of the Week

Children: What can you do this week to be an example to others?
Adults: Would you have the courage to tell others to do as you
do in order to be a Christian? Why or why not?
Parents: Lent is right around the corner! Here are some ideas
for your family for this Lenten Season. Talk as a family about
WHAT your family will be doing for their Lenten journey this year!
Prayer ~ Fasting ~ Almsgiving
 Come as a family to one of our masses or service of Ashes
on Ash Wednesday (see bulletin for times)
 Participate in Operation Rice Bowl. The children will be
coming home with Rice Bowls from their Faith Formation
classes. If your child attends SMCS or is homeschooled and you
would like a Rice Bowl, please stop by the Children's Faith
Formation office to pick one up.
 Lenten Soup Dinners will be held every Friday in Lent - plan
on attending as a family (Mom, it's a meal you don't have to
make!) and then go to Stations of the Cross
 Attend Station of the Cross at 7 PM on Fridays during Lent
 Reconciliation - receive this sacrament of forgiveness during
the Lenten Season. There will be additional times during Lent to
go to Reconciliation. Receive God's grace in this sacrament is
something we all need! God's grace helps us make it through our
daily life!
 Talk as a family what you can do to increase your family's
prayer life - will you pray a Rosary as a family, reading the
Sunday readings ahead of time, or offer up prayers for others ?
 Perhaps attending the Tuesday 6 PM mass as a family
besides attending Sunday liturgy. The more we receive
Eucharist, the more grace we can get! Receive the Sacraments
of Eucharist and Reconciliation often!
 Unplug from televisions, video games, etc. during Lent and
spend that time as a family; talk about each others' day, go
outside and take a walk looking at all God made around you,
spend that time in prayer!
Talk about what each member will be giving up for Lent support each other and perhaps try and continue that practice
even after Lent is over!

In Pre-K, we are working on practicing the virtue of SelfControl. We wore the color blue to represent the virtue during
Catholic Schools Week, and we give positive reinforcement when
we see our students demonstrate self-control. We are also
working on expanding our prayer intentions at Circle Time to
include our community and other relevant
issues. Additionally, we are expanding
our alphabet knowledge to include signing
the alphabet in American Sign Language.
SMCS is currently accepting applications for the 2015-2016
school year. We proudly provide a meaningful Catholic education
and promote academic excellence enhanced by opportunities to
explore the arts, music, foreign languages, and athletics.

meeting for Ash Wednesday Mass at 6:00pm. We look forward to

FaithLife (Confirmation I and II)
Confirmation classes will meet again TONIGHT. High School
students are strongly encouraged to join us for CROSSWALK –
our high school youth group which meets again next Sunday.
Confirmation I students will have an all-day retreat at St. Mark
on Saturday, February 21 beginning at 10am and ending after
5pm Mass.
Registration forms are available outside the
Office of Youth Ministry and were due February 13th.

St. Mark Montessori Preschool Enrollment Info
Open enrollment for any new students began Monday, Feb. 2 nd
and continues through Feb. 26th. If we receive more applications
than we have spaces available, we will have a lottery on Feb. 27 th.
All students will be notified of their enrollment the second week in
March. There will be 5 priority levels of admission to the school,
with the first openings being available to children of registered,
active and/or contributing parishioners of St. Mark. A detailed list
of the levels of admission, as well as applications to the
preschool, may be picked up outside Melissa Porter’s office
throughout the coming months.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Luncheon

Hibernians St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Following the parade there
will be a full corned beef and cabbage luncheon at the Hilton
Riverside where we will honor the marines who marched in the
parade. Tickets (which must be purchased in advance) are $25
each ($5 for children age 12 and under. Under 4 no charge). The
winning ticket for the trip to Ireland will be drawn at the luncheon.

High School Student Requests Our Help
with Important Project!
Thomas Coleman is a Senior in the Lyceum
program at New Hanover High School. He is
working on his Senior Project which is on drop-out
prevention. His research shows that the sooner
students get books in their hands, the better they
will do in school down the road. He is collecting
books for Snipes Academy, (the most highly impoverished
school in the state), and is asking for donations of books, such
as Dr. Seuss, etc. (All books would be greatly appreciated, but
books without religious content would be preferred.) Please
leave your donations in the box marked “Snipes Academy”
which is located in the Gathering Space, near the couch and
chairs. Thank you for assisting with this project to help young
children gain a love of reading and learning.

Diaconate
This past June, Bishop Burbidge ordained a record number
of 14 men, from Parishes across the entire Diocese to the
Permanent Diaconate in a Mass at St. Michael the
Archangel Church in Cary. The Diaconate, which is funded
through the BAA, includes five years of
preparation in order to serve this ministry.
Through ordination, a Deacon becomes the
sacramental presence of Jesus in the everyday
world and his liturgical duties include preaching
at Mass, performing baptisms, witnessing
marriages, leading funeral and burial services
and presiding at benediction and communion services. The
Diaconate allows these men to realize their call of service to
the Church and share the message of Jesus Christ within
their communities, all through the help of the Bishop’s
Annual Appeal.
College Campus Ministry
The BAA helps to support the seven Catholic Campus
Ministry Centers that are located at universities throughout
Eastern North Carolina. These Campus Ministries are
located at UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Wilmington, NC State,
NC Central, Duke, Elon and East Carolina. With tens of
thousands of Catholic college students throughout our
Diocese, participation at these Catholic Campus Ministries
Centers is at an all-time high. This is particularly true at
Duke University where, since 2010, the Duke Catholic
Center has seen a 67% increase in Sunday Mass attendance
while students are on campus. This past fall, Catholic
Campus Ministry at Elon University celebrated their “Silver
Jubilee”, or 25th anniversary. Elon student, Samantha
Murray, understands the important role of Catholic
Campus Ministry during her time as an undergraduate: “As
I approach my senior year and reflect on my past three
years, I fully recognize that I am blessed to have CCM in my
life. CCM is a support system, a friend group and a healthy
environment for reflection and prayer.”
Este pasado Junio, el Obispo Burbidge ordenó a 14
hombres, pertenecientes de diferentes parroquias de la
Diócesis, al Diaconado Permanente en una Misa celebrada
en la Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel en Cary. El
Diaconado, cuyo financiamiento proviene del BAA, incluye
cinco años de formación para poder servir en
este ministerio. Mediante la ordenación de un
Diácono, éste se convierte en la presencia
sacramental de Jesús en el mundo cotidiano.
Sus deberes litúrgicos incluyen, predicar en la
Misa, realizar bautizos, matrimonios, servicios
fúnebres y presidir en servicios de bendición y comunión.
El Diaconado permite que estos hombres realicen su
llamado al servicio de la Iglesia y compartan el mensaje de
Jesucristo dentro de sus comunidades, todo esto con la
ayuda de la Campaña Anual del Obispo.
Minisiterio Universitario
El BAA apoya los siete Centros de Ministerio Universitario
Católico (CCM) que se encuentran en las universidades a lo
largo del Este de Carolina del Norte. Este Ministerio de
Campus se encuentra en UNC-Chapell Hill, UNCWilmington, NC State, NC Central, Duke, Elon y la
Universidad del Este de Carolina. Con docenas de miles de
estudiantes universitarios católicos a lo largo de nuestra
diócesis, la participación en estos Centros de Ministerio
Católico Universitario está en un nivel más alto. Esto es
particularmente cierto en la Universidad de Elon donde la
Pastoral Universitaria Católica celebra su “Aniversario de
Plata” o el 25 aniversario este pasado otoño. Samantha
Murray, alumna de Elon, comprendió el importante rol del
Ministerio Universitario Católico durante su tiempo allí
antes de graduarse: “Mientras me acercaba a mi último año
escolar hice una reflexión de los últimos tres años,
reconozco completamente que estoy bendecida al tener
