On May 15, 1992 at 10:15 a.m., a group of mountaineers put the name of Chile in the highest peak of the planet for the first time: Mount Everest at 8,848 meters. The ascent was carried out by the Kangshung face, one of the most difficult routes, and certainly the least frequented. Cristián García Huidobro, Rodrigo Jordan and Juan Sebastián Montes were the first Chileans and the first South American Expedition to reach the summit. And also, the second of only three expeditions that have achieved the summit by the East side throughout history. Already on the way back, the members of the team imagined a new challenge, which this time would transcend the mountains. They had learned that the only way to achieve great objectives is working in teams made up of people who are not only highly competent, but also people with certain social and personal skills. This powerful learning touched them so deeply that the new challenge would be to give it to children at low-income schools without access to these skills development programs. In 1993 they created Fundación Vertical. It was the beginning of a long way of development of educational organizations which constitute what Vertical is today (Vertical Capital Humano, Vertical Expediciones and Instituto Vertical) which primary purpose is the training of people at most different levels: school students, university students, executives, organizational managers and senior citizens, among others. This is how Fundación Vertical was created, in order to train people in skills, attitudes and values that would help them to face life in a better way. In 20 years of intense work, Fundación Vertical has achieved the following accomplishments: More than 5,000 people are direct witnesses of its work every year, through around 30 different programs that have been successfully reproduced over the years and have been part of the educational methodology and work-spirit of Fundación Vertical . 2.500 asistentes a conferencias attendees to conferences Since 1993, Vertical starts activities oriented to the training of individuals and teams in organizations in Chile, in several South American countries and in the United States, in order to transfer the experience and knowledge gained on the mountainside to the business world. To do so, an experiencial learning methodology is used, designing learning experiences on site where the participants are confronted with different situations that force them to display their skills, competencies and potentialities, both individually and in groups, generating high motivation and involvement of participants in their own learning process to transfer it to their own work context. Thus, team work and the development of soft skills are skills such as communication, conflict resolution and leadership; competences that are more relevant nowadays and that in the present context are the foundation that allows organizations and individuals to face environments of strong and continuous changes. In 1995, for the first time, The Committee of Cultural Donations dependent on the National Council for Culture and Arts passeda bill allowing Fundación Vertical to be a Corporation subject to cultural donations. Since 1995, in the framework of the cultural donations Act No. 18.985, Fundación Vertical, together with the support of the private sector, has been able to significantly expand its coverage of beneficiaries nationwide. Specifically, this new partnership has enabled the Foundation to reach more institutions and communities with significant projects for their development. In change, companies have been able to access the tax exemption which the law allows for donations that have been made. To date, Fundación Vertical has received more than 100 grants that have allowed it to help an estimated of 20,000 people of different age groups throughout the country. Vertical is an example of the system of donations in Chile because it links companies, society and the State. Programa de FormaciÛn FundaciÛn Vertical. Parque Nacional Nahuelbuta, Chile. Sobresale en especial el caso “Life and Death Decisions on “The Savage Mountain”. On 13 August 1996, at 9.15 a.m., the Chilean flag fluttered for the first time at the summit of K2, the second highest mountain in the world at 8.611 meters. Known as the Savage Mountain, it is undoubtedly the most formidable and the hardest of the 14 summits exceeding 8,000 meters. At the beginning of 1996, only one of the five expeditions that had attempted the ascent had reached the summit without any loss of lives. This time, with Vertical already constituted as a company, the expedition was organized for which Chile was ranked in the big leagues of mountaineering around the world for its success. In addition, Vertical took a definite step in its consolidation as a company by testing the triumph of excellence: it accomplished the extraordinary success of having 4 climbers on the most difficult mountain summit in the world, by a route never achieved before and with all the team back safe and sound to base camp. Thus, in a definite manner, a link was created between the business development of Vertical with its sporting expeditions. A result of this link is the development of training material in issues of leadership and teamwork. In particular, the case “Life and Death Decisions on ‘The Savage Mountain.’ Leadership at 28,000 feet” stands out developed in conjunction with Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, which has been widely used as a case study in Chile and abroad. Also, the case is cited in Mike Useem book’s “The Go Moment” and was also the subject of a documentary by National Geographic called the “Quest for Adventure”. Ant·r tica. These hikes are designed to places such as the base camp of Mount Everest, the Annapurna trek in Nepal, explorations in Patagonia such as Campo de Hielo Norte y Sur and the most remote islands of the American continent such as Navarino Island. They have also explored the African continent, they have walked the plains of Turkey where they climbed Mount Ararat in search of the Lost Ark and also have gone deep in the jungles of Vietnam to climb to the Summit of the Fansipan. Eduardo Guzm·n, Empresa Constructora Vial y Vives Extreme environments are associated with conditions of pressure, temperature, humidity and gravity that are very different from the common ones. This can significantly affect the health status and the performance of people in different degrees, depending on their individual tolerance and the level of readiness they have. This means that starting any work under adverse conditions of altitude, low or high temperatures or dryness, among others, represents a major challenge for any attempt. Being aware of what it means to work under these conditions, Vertical engaged in contributing to the creation Rope rescue training Atacama, Chile. Photo: Eugenio Guzm·n of substantive tools that allow people to work safely and efficiently under these working conditions. Focusing the attention on the importance of building real working teams to deal with these difficulties, training programs were designed in which the central was the development of social and personal skills to work as a team without neglecting technical knowledge. The results have been very positive. As long as the participant workers of these programs manage behaviors and practices related to collaboration, mutual support and communication; and at the same time they become aware that their obligations are not only individual responsibilities but shared inside the teams, productivity increases and also rthe rate of accidents is significantly reducted, which directly translates into the fulfillment of goals for the organization. To date, Vertical has trained more than 5,000 workers from different areas of production, belonging to about twenty national and foreign companies. Vertical currently has training programs that, depending on the reality and needs of each company, have a duration of 16 to 48 hours and are mainly done in the area where the work is carried out. Inspired by early explorers of this territory, Shackleton, Scott, Amundsen and the more recent explorers, Vertical went beyond the territory of mountains which it dominates and ventured to explore one of the most remote and unknown places in the world. In 2002, a team of four mountain climbers started a trip of 400 kilometers by way of the unexplored East Slope of the Ellsworth Mountains in the heart of the Antarctic. Exploring Sentinel Range, Antarctica. Photo: Eugenio Guzm·n Absolutely alone, and without external support, in 54 days they crossed nine mountain passes, explored 17 glaciers, made the first ascent of Mount Segers and collected samples of rock and snow for scientific research that gave testimony of the climate change on the planet. Thus, Vertical fully undertook its organizational role in the field of exploration in its broadest sense, not only in regard to the sport, but also with a systemic view: education, science, research and documentation. This would be Vertical’ first step towards science that would reach new frontiers. Then, in 2008 the exploration of Greenland would come. With Antarctica 2002, having linked business development with the experience of the K2 expedition, Vertical also expands its educational offer. Besides the executive education and extracurricular activities for children, it goes into the formal content of school education, carrying out an educational program involving around 2,000 children, 2 of whom went later to Antarctica. It also produced an interactive CD which was distributed in schools throughout Chile. In 2003, Andrónico Luksic proposed Vertical the challenge of arranging a private expedition to Everest. Vertical accepted, provided that he would embrace the philosophy of the team and the training that Vertical demanded for these expeditions. The success of this expedition allowed Vertical to arrange many other private expeditions, not 18 tons de equipo se han trasladado y recuperado en estas expediciones of equipment have been moved and recovered in these expeditions only to the Himalayas (they have returned to Everest a couple of times and have climbed Mount Lhotse, the fourth highest mountain in the world) but also to the highest summits of each continent where year after year different groups of private clients and executives have accompanied them to these summits. The routes have been selected together with each group, glaciers covered with cracks have been crossed, and ropes have been set up. Enduring endless storms, raising tents in strong winds, battling against exhaustion and fighting for oxygen at higher altitudes is only a part of climbing the highest mountains in the world. The true story is the people struggling to make their dreams come true. Along with the large expeditions to Mount Everest and the Himalayas, Vertical is very proud of teams of CFR and VTR who challenged them to take 45 of CFR executives to the Summit of Kilimanjaro and 40 of VTR to the Summit of Aconcagua. 8.516m 27,940 ft 11 12 Mayo May 2006 15 escaladores en la cumbre 15 climbers on the summit ì No subÌ el Lhotse... With the 2006 Lhotse Expedition Vertical assured the human capital needed to transcend organizationally in the long term. Summit of Mount Lhotse, Nepal. Photo: Eugenio Guzm·n 12 May 7, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at an altitude of 5,400 meters, Vertical took on an unimaginable challenge. Until then, tradition established that only a small group of mountain climbers should attempted the Summit on behalf of the team that collaboratively equipped the mountain with everything needed for the attempts to reach the summit. The Lhotse 2006 expedition members gathered in the dining base camp tent and decided to end the this-has-always-been-done-this-way paradigm. By mutual agreement, they decided that all of them would go to the summit. Incorporating the youngest and 4 sherpas in this challenge, on 11 and 12 May 2006 the expedition of Vertical achieved the summit of Mount Lhotse with 15 climbers. The most important thing of this adventure is that this unimaginable success through the traditional prism of mountaineering was achieved without compromising the code of values which is the basis of the actions of Vertical. In the attempt to get to the summit the group had to make a critical decision. The hours were counted and on the way to Camp 4 they found the dying body of a climber from another expedition. As a team, prioritizing human life over the sporting achievement, they chose to try to save him, knowing that this decision could lead them to lose the summit. Despite the significant rescue efforts carried out, the serious injuries of the climber ended promptly with his life. They decided then to resume the attempt despite the lateness of the hour. This success based on values was the perfect setting for two additional objectives of this expedition: the celebration in life of Master Claudio Lucero, who taught the Vertical members the importance of values and the inclusion of a generation of continuity which would ensure the Vertical transcendence in years to come. With Lhotse Expedition 2006 Vertical assured the human capital needed to transcend organizationally in the long term. From the point of view of mountaineering, adventure, and exploration, Vertical had achieved unprecedented successes that left the team with a very deep sense of accomplishment. However, the team felt that what most satisfied them in the end, was such a positive response from all those people that worked every day in the different educational programs, covering very diverse audiences: children, executives, young people, adults, etc. To hear phrases such as “I have been transformed as a person”, was not unusual for the organization. This is how the purpose of Vertical was consolidated for the years to come: the education and training of people. This settled as the great sense, the deepest meaning of Vertical. In parallel, the demand for training programs of Vertical was growing steadily nationwide for new initiatives and educational offers. In order to finance this growth, the company decided to open up to investors. The response was enthusiastic, immediate and strong. A group of investors joined the purpose of Vertical and decided to join it in its future development. This milestone was very important for the company, since this enthusiasm reflected interest in Vertical’s fundamental objective of education. It also showed trust in the team, in its project and its managerial capacity. For Vertical, this step was also significant because the shareholders shared the same code of values that supports the organization. One of the main projects that started from this capital contribution was the creation of Instituto Profesional Vertical. ì En cuatro aÒo s, este emprendimiento ha significado la inclusiÛ n de 11 regiones en el programa, la capacitaciÛ n de cerca de 400 personas y recorrer los ì gimnasios naturales de Chileî c on cerca de 15.000 personas entre niÒo s, adultos mayores y discapacitadosî ì In four years, this venture has meant the inclusion of 11 regions in the program, the training of about 400 people and visiting the ì natural gyms of Chileî with about 15,000 people, including children, senior citizens and adults with disabilitiesî Programa de Senderismo IND ≠ Vertical. The transformation of the view of sports as a mass spectacle has allowed the contemporary “sports for all” phenomenon that has arisen worldwide as a response to a series of social phenomena. Vertical, understanding the role that sport have on today’s society, set as a goal the massive integration of new segments of the population, such as senior citizens and people with disabilities in an effort to make access to practicing sports democratic. This has been done in order to contribute to the increase in the practice of physical activity among the population, to promote the value of sports in Chilean society as a healthy lifestyle, to promote environmentally-friendly practices, and to educate participants in behaviors of care and preservation of natural resources. So, in 2011 Vertical designs “The National Hiking Program” for the IND to be executed in different areas of the country. In four years, this venture has meant the inclusion of 11 regions in the program, the training of about 400 people and visiting the “natural gyms of Chile” with about 15,000 people, including children, senior citizens and adults with disabilities. Its effects were devastating because of a large-scale tsunami that followed the earthquake a few hours later. According to the Government’s estimate, the number of victims in the country was 800,000, after 200,000 homes were destroyed or were severely damaged. The disaster was faced in the beginning with emergency homes and tents. In response to this disaster, Fundación Vertical designed the program ‘Acompañar’ (Accompanying Program) in order to help the families affected assigning 30 professionals with all their resources and capabilities. During 2010 and 2011 an onsite intervention was carried out benefiting 233 families distributed across four villages: Fuerza Curanipe in Pelluhue, Region VII which housed 19 families; Caleta Perales in Coelemu, VIII Region with 34 families; Santa Fe 1 in Lebu Alto, VIII Region with 30 families; and Santa Fe 2 also Lebu Alto, Region VIII, which housed 150 families. They collaborated in the installation of five domes, as social venues for these communities and conducted a number of activities for the affected families, which included conferences, entrepreneurship programs for housewives, educational activities with children and young people and training in different areas for adults. Vertical, reflecting its passion for exploration, leadership and education went further with a whole year of celebrations that included not only a new expedition, but also a series of events to thank and contribute to the country. Ratifying the innovative processes developed during the 2006 Lhotse expedition, 18 climbers arrived at the same time to the Summit. This expedition also gave the opportunity to young climbers who thus made their first ascent to the highest mountain in the world and to the Chilean Army which, with two members, also achieved the first ascent for the institution. In addition to consolidating the business and sporting abilities, Vertical organized a series of events to thank and contribute to Chile. In order to share its learning with Chile, Vertical organized a symposium “Everest, 20 years: beyond of the Summits”. This brought together prominent adventurers, academics and entrepreneurs from all over the world who have pushed their capabilities beyond limits and in fields where very few dare to go. 21 Formación de Adultos Mayores Instructores en educación ambiental & naturaleza 2012 350 instructores adultos mayores han sido formados por la Funda≠ ciÛ n Vertical entre 2012 y 2014. senior citizen instructors have been trained by FundaciÛ n Vertical between 2012 and 2014 “Tengo 81 años y tener experiencias como estas es realmente maravilloso a mi edad...” Sra.
