El lunes 10 de octubre, en el auditorio del Colegio Médico, Daniel A. Carrión,
se realizó la tercera Ceremonia de Entrega de Certificados de la Universidad
de Cambridge, de este año. Durante el evento, otorgamos cuatro Becas a la
Excelencia. Los becados Andrea Martin, Bruno Pacheco y José Leveroni, del
BRITÁNICO San Isidro, y Patricia Zevallos, del BRITÁNICO San Borja, tendrán la
oportunidad de viajar a Londres, por un mes, con todos los gastos pagados,
para complementar su aprendizaje del inglés en una prestigiosa escuela de
idiomas. Este año hemos entregado 28 becas a nuestros estudiantes de los
distintos centros.


Melisa Gutiérrez, Ganadora de la Beca a la Excelencia 2010-I
Cuando me dijeron que era una de las ganadoras de la beca al Reino Unido se inició una de
las etapas más lindas de mi vida. Desde ese día tuve una expectativa enorme que se mantuvo
intacta durante todos los meses que pasé tramitando documentos, haciendo compras y soñando
despierta con Londres. Nunca antes había viajado a Europa y no tenía idea de cómo sería Londres,
aparte de lo que había visto en las películas.

The weather forecast for the day: low temperatures but dry. I go out wearing my coat and
sweater which will later become an annoying burden in my bag, as the day has turned into
a sunny and hot one. No more than half an hour later, the sun is gone and instead there
are threatening gray clouds. Within five minutes, an insignificant drizzle becomes a heavy
shower. By the time I manage to get my coat on and my umbrella out of my purse, the
rain starts to fade and the sun begins to show up again. This is the weather of London:
unpredictable, one moment it’s hot and the next thing you know it’s freezing. And I could
not have hated it more than I did. However, for every single thing that I could dislike about
London, I’d find a thousand other things that I absolutely love about this magnificent,
fantastic, gorgeous and magical city.

This experience that I had thanks to the BRITÁNICO was without a doubt the greatest in my
life. I was able to get to know a different but awesome culture. I saw awe-inspiring architecture

and breathtakingly-beautiful landscapes. I made the most out of my one-month trip, I went to
every place that I could, I tried new food and I did not fear anything. That’s how I got to feel like
a Londoner, how I got to live as a Londoner.
The things I learned and saw there have changed me. The people there were so nice and kind
to me, I made lots of friends with whom I shared so many fun moments; I got to improve my
English so much! There is too much to tell about my experience in London, so many memories
that do not fit in this article and that I would like to tell … but way better than hearing my
stories is to live them. And all it takes is to be a dedicated student at the BRITÁNICO, easy as
that. I genuinely thank the BRITÁNICO for what I experienced and I really hope that you practise
what you are taught in your classes, because you might be the next one writing about your
own trip to London.

Graduación de “Jardineritos” con el apoyo del
BRITÁNICO
El lunes 3 de octubre se realizó la ceremonia de graduación de una promoción más de jóvenes
jardineros del programa Jardineritos, que el BRITÁNICO viene auspiciando desde hace varios años.
Se contó con la presencia de Juan Lira, presidente del Consejo Directivo del BRITÁNICO; James
Dauris, embajador británico; y Alejandro Vassilaqui, director ejecutivo de CEDRO; así como de otras
autoridades de Jardines de la Paz, CEDRO y el BRITÁNICO. En el evento se entregaron juegos de
herramientas de jardinería a los graduados.
Este proyecto se encarga de educar y capacitar a jóvenes de la casa hogar de CEDRO en labores
de jardinería, con el objetivo de
insertarlos en la sociedad y, por ende,
en el mercado laboral, ya sea en forma
dependiente o independiente.
Con estas prácticas de responsabilidad social, el BRITÁNICO quiere
retribuir, de alguna manera, a la comunidad, la confianza depositada
a lo largo de los años.

Leaders meeting in Brazil
Se realizaron dos sesiones para profesores del BRITÁNICO los
días 23 y 30 de setiembre en los auditorios de Pueblo Libre y
Surco.
Éstas estuvieron a cargo de los reconocidos expositores
Deborah Iddon de Cambridge University Press (CUP) y José Luis
Morales de Pearson-Longman, y contaron con la entusiasta
participación de profesores de nuestros centros de enseñanza.

Pilar Ferreyros, BRITÁNICO Teacher Training Manager, in
her capacity as Cambridge Regional Team Leader in PERU,
attended the annual meeting for Cambridge Regional Team
Leaders from Brazil, Peru and Paraguay held in Sao Paulo,
Brazil on 16 September. The Team Leader system is an
essential element in the quality assurance policy for speaking
exams applied by the University of Cambridge as the leading
world institution in examinations in English.

Advice for FCE Candidates who will sit
the exam in December
If you have registered to take the FCE Exam in December, there are only a few weeks left to
prepare for it, so you should intensify your practice towards the exam now. The BRITÁNICO
offers the best alternatives to do it:

The SAC of your centre has a variety of FCE Past Papers, CDs, CD-ROMs, graded
readers, magazines, etc. If you have finished AD6 in October or will finish it in
November, don’t worry because you have free use of the SAC until the FCE exam in
December. This wonderful opportunity is only available to those BRITÁNICO students
who have already registered for the December exam.
The First Certificate Exam Practice Course consists of timed exam practice of all the
papers. Read the related article in this issue and ask for more information at the reception desk of your centre.

Como parte del programa de capacitación a nuestro staff, Graciela Chang, profesora del BRITÁNICO San Borja, viajó al Reino
Unido y nos brinda su testimonio:
It couldn’t have been better
Me! in the UK? YES! 4 weeks in Oxford and Cambridge, two
rival university cities. I was very fortunate to have courses for
teachers at Exeter college and Homerton college, different
classes, tutors, colleagues, food; same weather though. My
experience in both places was fantastic!
Being a student again after a looooooong time was, as a
teenager would say nowadays, wicked! (really great). I didn’t
have to correct exams or compositions nor prepare classes.
Sometimes my lovely colleagues from different countries and
I were “nicely terrible pupils”: we talked at the same time
as the teacher was speaking or we conveniently forgot to
do the homework! Being on the other side of the fence was
refreshingly sick (another colloquial word for good). Besides,
we learnt a lot from each other and our great tutors by sharing
anecdotes and opinions and reflecting on our vocation.
Living in England helped me understand British culture better,
their customs, food, shops, traffic, weather, language. Those
things are different from Lima, but I got used to them pretty
quickly. For instance, most shops close at 5pm, so not much

time to go shopping, the food is mild, and the rain! As the
driver is on the right side of vehicles, the way they go is so
confusing for us foreigners that at crossings “look left” or
“look right” is painted on the ground to remind us to be
careful not to be hit by a car or bus out of our silly ignorance.
What I found the funniest was the taps. In both colleges I
stayed in, there were two taps in the washbasin, one for cold
and another for hot water; so you could either freeze or burn
yourself! Happily the shower wasn’t like that. I asked the
locals why they don’t have just one tap and the best answer
was what Gregor, who worked at the college in Cambridge,
said to me in his Scottish accent, “This is England, sweetheart.
We like being different”. Fair enough, I love it!
Last but not least, I’d like to thank the BRITÁNICO, from the
bottom of my heart, for this once in a lifetime opportunity to
grow personally and professionally. The whole experience of
attending the workshops, lectures in Oxford and Cambridge,
and feeling, living the British culture couldn’t have been
better.

I departed from London with a
desire to live, learn and teach in
a different land. It’s beautiful to have the chance here at
the BRITÁNICO to further my skills and understanding.
I have the blessing of teaching, and sharing my culture
in a land where the variety of voices, colours, tastes
and traditions are spellbinding and extend further than
the Andes soar! Lima, just like London, is a city where
expression is for ever present and vivid!

Kerry Packer
In 2009, I moved from the United States to
Peru, with my wife Cecilia and my daughter
Isabella. We really wanted the opportunity
to live close to Cecilia’s family, since she had
been living in the USA for about five years.
After several months, I began looking for a
job as an English teacher and I applied at
several of the best institutes in Lima. I was
particularly interested in working for the
BRITÁNICO because I had spoken with one
of the teachers there who had told me how
well they treat their employees. I am glad
that I took that teacher’s advice and chose to work at the BRITÁNICO;
I really feel happy here. The other teachers are professional and very
friendly, which makes it fun to go to work. I feel really blessed to
have a great Head of Centre and Deputy Heads of Centre as well. I
always look forward to talking with them and learning from them.
Frequently, I ask for help with my teaching and I have received great
advice and guidance. They have also been supportive of my personal
needs as well, like needing to take off time to go to my brother’s
wedding in the USA. My favourite thing about the BRITÁNICO is the
people; I can really say that in the past nine months I have made many
lifelong friends. I really feel that God has blessed my life through the
opportunities I have received at the BRITÁNICO; it’s a great place to
be!

Con la llegada de la primavera, el programa Tiempo Libre hizo los honores a la
estación y en este marco los motivos florales fueron los protagonistas para la
decoración de las diversas obras artesanales que nuestros alumnos trabajaron
con mucho acierto. Una vez más se puso a prueba su sensibilidad y creatividad
obteniendo magníficos resultados.
Los talleres gratuitos que se ofrecieron en los centros fueron variados,
así como también las técnicas de pintado que además de ser sencillas,
enriquecieron artísticamente cada uno de los trabajos. Con dedicación y

otros; obteniendo bellos resultados que los sorprendió gratamente. En el
BRITÁNICO Surco tuvimos una sesión de bisutería donde los estudiantes
aprendieron a manejar herramientas especiales y a confeccionar novedosos
juegos de pulsera y aretes. En el BRITÁNICO San Borja tuvimos una clase de
repostería y los alumnos tuvieron la oportunidad de aprender, preparar y
degustar el postre tiramisú.
En cada sesión, nuestros estudiantes disponen de un espacio, herramientas,
material y su sobre todo cuentan con profesores que comparten sus
conocimientos y experiencia para crear y producir bellas obras de artesanía.

How the British celebrate traditional
and religious holidays
Halloween
Halloween (31 October) and its associations with witches and
ghosts derives from the Celtic Old Year’s Night – the night of all
witches, when spirits were said to walk the earth. Witches and
supernatural beings are still remembered all over Britain, when
bands of children roam the streets in ghoulish costumes, carrying
Halloween lanterns – pumpkins hollowed out with a ghostly face
cut into one side, which glows when a candle is placed inside. In
recent years the custom of ‘trick or treating’ has gained in popularity.
Although we commonly associate this practice with America, the
custom originated in England as ‘Mischief Night’ when children declared
one ‘lawless night’ of unpunished pranks (usually May Day eve or Halloween).
Halloween parties (usually for children) include games such as apple bobbing,
where apples are either floated in water or hung by a string. The object of the
game is for the players to put their hands behind their back and try to seize an
apple with their teeth alone.

“Wear your heart on your sleeve” – The poetic side of grammar

Every single person has a writer sleeping deep within and since
English learners are no exception, I asked my intermediate seven
students and their limitless minds to get down to work.
How? By encouraging them to put their experiences, feelings,
reasoning and reflection into words. In addition to this, they
applied their previously learnt knowledge of prefixes and suffixes
to turn mere nouns and adjectives into something imaginative.
Lovely and, one might even say, unique.
The activity proved to be not only productive but also motivating
as all my students were engaged throughout the process, showing
once again that English is not only to be learnt but to be used.

A new phase!!!

The most rewarding experience teachers can have is when
their students feel that English is part of them, and this is
even more special if this feeling comes to children. My prekids 9 students couldn’t believe they were making invitation
cards for their parents to join us this October 22nd and say
together, “Bye, pre-kids phase”!!!! These marvellous children
didn’t realize they had been studying for 18 months; they
just knew we had spent enjoyable moments in contact with
English.
Now, Alessandra, Sofia, Isabella, Sebastian, Alejandro and
Pamela are about to start a new phase: “KIDS”. “It sounds
important, doesn’t it?” That’s what they said.
It has been said that children have a natural talent for music,
songs, rhymes, chants and so on. And I believe it. These
fantastic activities make lessons more playful, more enjoyable,
full of physical movement, and children are motivated by
them and remember the language better. To demonstrate
this, children from PK-9 presented three relevant activities
from the book: a song, “My birthday”, a chant, “Don’t be
shy”, and a dialogue, “The weather”.
They performed them in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere
with plenty of encouragement and the participation of
their parents. After that, they were rewarded with a special
Certificate. I would like to thank them for the effort and
enthusiasm they displayed in the classroom. It was a great
experience as a teacher to see them accomplish their goals.

¡El BRITÁNICO me da las herramientas necesarias para triunfar!
Hola, mi nombre es Elizabeth Vivanco y soy profesora de Educación Inicial. Desde hace algunos
años tuve interés de estudiar inglés (siempre me gustó, pero no había tenido el tiempo para
hacerlo). Además, lo necesitaba, ya que el colegio donde trabajo es bilingüe, y siempre veía
a mis colegas que conversaban en inglés entre ellos y yo solo movía la cabeza y decía Yes, a
todo. Como no entendía nada, decidí comenzar esta aventura.
El inicio fue un poco difícil, pues aprender un idioma no es fácil, pero debo agradecer a cada
uno de los profesores que me han enseñado hasta el día de hoy, ya que son de lo mejor. Poco
a poco fui avanzando y ahora puedo decirles que estudiar en el BRITANICO ha sido la mejor
decisión, los profesores son A1.
Ahora me siento más segura al conversar con mis colegas y sobre todo puedo darles a mis
alumnos una enseñanza de mayor calidad.
