God’s Work of Salvation
God’s work of salvation is the focus of this weekend’s readings. From the prophetic event of Isaiah to Jesus’ understanding of
the human condition in Hebrews, concluding with Jesus paying our ransom in Mark, God is in control. There may be failings and
misunderstandings along the way. We may move away from God, but at our conversion, God leads us back. Like James and John,
we may let greed and power blur our vision of what Jesus wants us to know about the Kingdom; but tirelessly we are taught and
re-taught what life in the Kingdom will be. Jesus has paid our ransom to ensure that we will share in the Kingdom.
It is not unusual to think of Jesus’ ransom as a punishment that he endured. However, it is more accurate, and more like Jesus,

for us to recognize ransom as God’s gift to us.

Novena Prayer for All Souls
Living God’s Word
The Novena Prayer for A Souls will start
Saturday, Oct. 24th. We will be reciting this
prayer at each mass for the nine days, and you
may recite it with your family at home. The
prayer and All Souls Day offering envelopes
will be in next week’s bulletin and also in the
vestibule. The names of the deceased listed on
the All Souls Day offering envelopes will be
prayed for throughout the month of November.
Isaiah’s servant sounds like the wise and wrinkled old one
whose selfless devotion helped make his marriage work, one
who knowingly and willingly bore the guild of others. This
is also our image of Jesus. Is our image of ourselves like it?

Dynamic Catholic) this week. We invite the parish to join us
on our journey by watching the videos for session one over
the next two weeks. The videos can be viewed on the

followed by the videos for session 1. Each video is anywhere
from 3-10 minutes in length. Rediscover your faith as you go
through the videos that our teens will watch as they grow towards Confirmation and choosing the Catholic faith as their
own. Maybe you can ask a question or two to a youth of the
parish about how they are enjoying the videos.
All Saints Day - Sunday, November 1st
We encourage everyone to attend mass to
honor all the saints, known and unknown.
Our Catholic faith teaches us that there is
a prayerful spiritual communion between
those who have attained the beatific
vision in Heaven (the saints) and the
living. The saints intercede with God on behalf of us.

Youth Day is a gathering of
Catholic Youth from around the world
initiated in 1986 by Pope John Paul
II. The event with the pope occurs every
2 to 3 years. If you would like to be a part of the St. Elizabeth group attending World Youth Day this summer, please

remember all our beloved family and friends who

Altar of Remembrance
All are welcome to bring pictures of
deceased family and friends for our altar of
remembrance. In addition, we are continuing a custom of giving a place of honor to a
book in which parishioners may write the
names of their dead. You will find this book near the Altar of
Remembrance. Please feel free to write the names of your deceased
loved ones in this book. To ensure enough room, we ask that you
only include the names of your deceased loved ones. We will
continue to remember these beloved souls throughout the
month of November with a special prayer at daily mass.

Dear parishioners and friends,

A Harvard Crimson poll of the university’s
class of 2019 provides a look into the beliefs
and practices of incoming freshmen. The poll
suggests a decline in number of Protestants and Catholics and a
rise of atheists and agnostics in the three years of available data.
For the class of 2017, the number of Protestants and Catholics
were 42.4%, compared to 37% for the class of 2018 and 34.1%
for the class of 2019. For atheists and agnostics, the trend is
reversed. For the class of 2017, atheists and agnostics made up
32.4% of the campus, while they made up 35.6% of the class of
2018 and 37.9% of the class of 2019. Part of the reason why
American Christianity is on the decline is due to the number of
young people who don’t self-identify with a religion anymore.
As the finding of the poll, incoming freshmen are much more
likely to say they are not at all religious or not very religious
than those who say they are.
“Come to me, all you who labor and are
burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from
me, for I am meek and humble of heart;
and you will find rest for your selves.”
(Matthew 11:28-29)
I am the Resurrection and the Life; all
lasting Life emanates from Me. People
search for life in many wrong ways;
chasing after fleeting pleasures, accumulating possessions and wealth, trying to
deny the inevitable effects of aging.
Meanwhile, I freely offer abundant Life
to everyone who turns toward Me. As
you come to Me and take My yoke upon you, I fill you with
My very Life. This is how I choose to live in the world and
accomplish My purposes. This is also how I bless you with
Joy unspeakable and full of Glory. The Joy is Mine, and the
Glory is Mine; but I bestow them on you as you live in My
Presence, inviting Me to live fully in you.
We can see that there is the rise of young Americans who don’t
believe in God and don’t want to associate with Catholic
Church. What is one of their excuses? Why should I need a
Catholic community? God is everywhere, isn’t He? Beside the
fact that all sacraments takes place among the community and
should involve the whole community, there is another crucial
reason to counter such an excuse. The Church is “the bride of
Christ”, “the body of Christ”, and “the people of God.” The
Church’s identity is inseparable from Jesus and thus shares in
the mystery of God. We can’t say “yes” to God and “no” to
Church.

At St. Elizabeth church, the “Mass count 2014” reported that
there were 3,641 church participants, compared to the year 2013
that counted 3,564 church participants. The number seems to be
increasing. But we shouldn’t forget that there are 1,700 registered families at our parish. We should have about 7,000 parishioners. Where are the remaining 50% at each weekend? Let’s
hold this question for now and move on to the next: “What are
we going to do for them and with them?” We must recognize
that those who are without Jesus and His Church are spiritually
poor people, and it is our mission to embrace them with our
love and share with them our joy.

Pope Francis wrote in his message for the 89th World Mission
Sunday, which is celebrated today: “We ask ourselves: ‘Who
are the first to whom the Gospel message must be proclaimed?’
The answer, found so often throughout the Gospel, is clear: it is
the poor, the little ones and the sick, those who are often looked
down upon or forgotten, those who cannot repay us (cf. Lk
14:13-14). Evangelization directed preferentially to the least
among us is a sign of the Kingdom that Jesus came to bring:
‘There is an inseparable bond between our faith and the poor.
May we never abandon them’ (Evangelii Gaudium, 48).”
For all who are lacking a community of believers to sustain
them – We pray.

Kính thưa Quý Cụ, Quý Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến,
Cuộc thăm dò mới đây của Đại Học Harvard với lớp 2019 cho thấy một cái nhìn đáng lo ngại về việc sùng đạo và
sống đạo của các sinh viên mới. Cuộc thăm dò ghi nhận con số suy giảm đối với những tín hữu Tin Lành và Công
Giáo, trong khi con số những người vô thần và người bất khả tri thì lại đang trên đà gia tăng trong ba năm qua. Trong
lớp 2017 thì có 42.4% là người Tin Lành và Công Giáo, so với 37% trong lớp 2018 và 34.1% trong lớp 2019. Còn con
số của người vô thần và bất khả tri thì ngược lại. Trong lớp 2017 thì họ chiếm 32.4%, so với lớp 2018 thì có 35.6% và
lớp 2019 thì lên 37.9%. Một phần của lý do tại sao Kitô giáo tại Hoa Kỳ đang suy giảm là vì càng ngày càng có những
người trẻ tự cho họ không thuộc tín ngưỡng nào. Như cuộc thăm dò tìm thấy, con số những sinh viên mới nói rằng họ
không sùng đạo cao hơn con số những sinh viên nói họ sùng đạo.
Như vậy chúng ta thấy càng ngày càng có những người trẻ tại Hoa Kỳ không tin vào Thiên Chúa và không còn
liên hệ gì với Giáo Hội Công Giáo. Một trong những lý do biện minh của họ là gì? “Tại sao tôi cần một cộng đoàn
Công Giáo? Chúa ở khắp mọi nơi mà phải không? Thế thì ngoài thực tế là các bí tích nên được cử hành ở giữa cộng
đoàn các tín hữu và nên có sự tham dự tích cực của cộng đoàn, còn có một lý do quan trọng khác để đối chứng lại ý
tưởng biện minh trên. Chúng ta biết Giáo Hội là “hiền thê của Đức Kitô”, là “nhiệm thể của Đức Kitô”, và là “dân
thánh của Chúa.” Cho nên căn tính của Giáo Hội không thể tách biệt khỏi Chúa Giêsu và vì thế được chung phần với
mầu nhiệm của Thiên Chúa. Chúng ta không thể nói “có” với Thiên Chúa mà lại nói “không” với Giáo Hội được.

Thánh Lễ cuối tuần, so với con số trong năm 2013 là 3,564 người. So sánh con số thì dường như người tham dự
Thánh Lễ đang có chiều hướng gia tăng mỗi năm. Nhưng chúng ta cũng đừng quên rằng giáo xứ có tới 1,700 gia đình
ghi danh. Có nghĩa là phải có khoảng 7,000 giáo dân. Vậy thì 50% còn lại đi đâu mất tiêu trong mỗi cuối tuần? Hãy
tạm thời không tìm câu trả lời bây giờ mà hãy hỏi tiếp: “Chúng ta sẽ làm gì cho và với những người ‘mất tiêu’ đó?”
Thiết nghĩ chúng ta phải nhận ra rằng những ai mà sống thiếu niềm tin vào Chúa Giêsu và Giáo Hội của Chúa thì kỳ
thực là những người nghèo về phương diện tâm linh. Và chính vì vậy mà sứ mạng của chúng ta phải là ôm ấp họ bằng
tình yêu chân thành không giả dối và chia sẻ với họ niềm vui Tin Mừng mà chúng ta nhận được.
Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô đã viết trong sứ điệp nhân ngày Thế Giới Truyền Giáo lần thứ 89, mà Chúa Nhật hôm
nay đang cử hành: “chúng ta tự hỏi: ‘Ai là những người đầu tiên phải được nghe loan báo sứ điệp Tin Mừng?’ Câu trả
lời rất rõ ràng và được gặp rất thường xuyên trong Tin Mừng, đó là: những người nghèo, những người bé mọn và
những người bệnh tật, những người thường bị khinh dể hay bị bỏ quên, những người không có gì để đền đáp chúng ta
(x. Lc 14,13-14). Ưu tiên rao giảng Tin Mừng cho những người hèn mọn nhất giữa chúng ta là dấu chỉ của Nước
Thiên Chúa mà Ðức Giêsu đem đến: ‘Có một dây liên kết không thể phân ly giữa đức tin của chúng ta và người
nghèo. Xin cho chúng ta không bao giờ bỏ rơi họ.’ (Evangelii Gaudium, 48)”
Cầu cho tất cả những ai đang sống thiếu một cộng đoàn tín hữu để nâng đỡ họ - Chúng ta cầu xin Chúa.

Chúa Nhật Truyền Giáo
Sẵn sàng phục vụ Trong Tin mừng Chúa nhật hôm
nay, chúng ta thấy các môn đệ tranh cãi với nhau để
xem ai lớn nhất. Và bây giờ hai anh em ông Gioan và
Giacôbê đến xin ngồi chỗ cao nhất, và chúng ta thấy sự
phẫn nộ của các môn đệ khác cũng muốn dành quyền.
Chúa Giêsu lúc này cũng biết được ý đồ sâu xa của hai
anh em, nhưng Người đảo ngược lại: "Ai muốn trở nên
lớn nhất sẽ là đầy tớ anh em". Trên con đường Khổ
Nạn, Chúa Giêsu còn nói lại với các môn đệ về ý nghĩa
của ơn gọi của họ, một ơn gọi cũng giống như của
Người: "Đầy tớ không lớn hơn chủ nhà. " (Ga 13,16).
Sự ước mơ quyền thế đã cắm rễ sâu vào con tim mỗi
người... Sự ước mơ chiếm hữu, cái ước mơ phát xuất từ
tình cảm chúng ta, và cái ước mơ cai quản, toàn là
những nơi chủ chốt của tự do chúng ta: Vậy chúng ta
đừng ngạc nhiên vì chúng, là những nơi chốn của đấu
tranh và của cám dỗ...
Chúng ta hãy cho là quan trọng lời mời gọi này của
Đức Kitô để bước theo Người trong sự phục vụ kẻ
khác. Suốt đời, chúng ta phải học trở nên tôi tớ. Chúa
Giêsu đã làm gương về điều đó: "Không có tình yêu
nào cao quý hơn, là cả cuộc đời cho những người mình
yêu".

Vì địa vị, quyền hành đã gây chia rẽ
giữa các môn đệ. Ðiều đó cho thấy mục
đích theo Chúa Giêsu của các môn đệ
còn thấp kém. Chính vì thế, trước lời
loan báo của Ðức Giêsu về cuộc khổ
nạn, các ông vẫn không hiểu, dù Ngài
đã nói đến lần thứ ba. Ðức Giêsu thì cương quyết lên
Giêrusalem để chấp nhận khổ nạn, còn các môn đệ thì
sợ hãi kinh hoàng. Ðức Giêsu nói rõ: Con đường của
Ngài là con đường đau khổ, là chấp nhận chén đắng. Sự
thanh tẩy tức là từ bỏ mình là chấp nhận khiêm tốn
phục vụ như một đầy tớ của mọi người. Ðó là vinh
quang đích thực của Ðức Giêsu và của những môn đệ
Ngài.

Queridos feligreses y amigos:
Con sus sufrimientos justificará mi siervo a muchos.
La encuesta Harvard Crimson de la Universidad
para la clase del 2019 muestra que las creencias y practicas de
los estudiantes del primer ano. La votacion sugiere un decaimiento en numero de Protestantes y Catolicos y un aumento
de ateistas y agnosticos en los tres anos de informacion disponible. Para la clase del 2017, el numero de Protestantes y
catolicos es 42.4%, comparado con 37% para la clase del
2018 y 34.1% para la clase del 2019.Para los ateistas y los
agnosticos, la tendencia es contraria. Para la clase del 2017,
ateistas y agnosticos es 32.4% en el campus, cuando 35.6%
para la clase del 2018 y 37.9% para la clase del 2019. En
parte porque la Cristiandad Americana esta en declinacion es
por el numero de jovenes quienes no se identifican con una
religion. Para los estudiantes del primer ano es mas facil decir
que no son religiosos o no son tan religiosos que los que dicen
que lo son.

La Obra Divina de Salvación
La obra de Dios de la salvación es el enfoque de las lecturas este fin de semana. Desde el acontecer profético de Isaías
hasta la visión de Jesús sobre la condición humana en
Hebreos, y terminando con el rescate que paga Jesús por
nosotros en san Marcos, Dios está al mando. Puede que ocurran caídas e incomprensiones por el camino. Puede que nos
alejemos de Dios, pero Dios nos trae de vuelta a su lado
mediante la conversión. Al igual que Santiago y Juan, a veces
dejamos que la avaricia y el poder empañen nuestra visión de
lo que Jesús nos quiere enseñar sobre el Reino; pero sin tregua
nos enseña y nos repite cómo ha de ser la vida en el Reino.
Jesús ha pagado por nuestro rescate para garantizar que
compartamos el Reino con él.
No es raro que pensemos sobre el rescate que pagó Jesús
en términos de un castigo que tuvo que sufrir. Sin embargo, es
más acertado y más como Jesús, reconocer que el rescate es
un regalo de Dios para nosotros.
Vemos que aumenta los jovenes Americanos que no creen en
Dios y no desean asociarse con la Iglesia catolica. Cual es una
de sus escusas? Porque necesito una comunidad Catolica?
Dios esta en todas partes, no es asi? Todos los sacramentos
toman lugar en la comunidad y debe implicar toda la comunidad, hay otra razon crucial que podemos contar como excusa.
La Iglesia es “la novia de Cristo”, “el cuerpo de cristo” y “la
gente de Dios”. La identidad de la Iglesia es inseparable de
jesus y por consiguiente comparte el misterio de dios. No
podemos decir “si” a Dios y “no” a la Iglesia.

Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe
Santiago y Juan, además de ser hermanos, eran tipos muy
atrevidos. Se acercaron a Jesús para pedirle puestos de poder y
autoridad en el Reino que estaba estableciendo. Al darse
cuenta, los demás discípulos se molestaron con ellos,
probablemente porque deseaban los mismos puestos. La
tentación y el deseo de poder es algo muy común a todos los
seres humanos. Todos deseamos el primer puesto y la estima
de los demás. No obstante, Jesús nos recuerda que no es fácil
tener responsabilidad. La autoridad es un cáliz difícil de beber
ya que muchas veces contiene una bebida amarga y el peso o
decisión de ser fieles al Evangelio, aún a costa de la propia
vida.
Por tal motivo, la persona que quiera estar cerca de Jesús
tendrá que aprender a ser como Cristo, quien no vino a
imponer su autoridad buscando ser servido, sino que vino a
servir. Él, siendo Dios, no se aferró a su condición divina, sino
que se hizo uno de tantos, cuidando a su madre por muchos
años, juntándose con pecadores, lavando los pies a sus discípulos y dando la vida por todas las personas. Estar al lado de
Jesús no es cuestión de poder, sino de amor y servicio, hasta
dar la vida. Él nos puso el ejemplo.

En la Iglesia de Santa Elizabeth, “el conteo de Misas del
2014” reporto que tenemos 3,641 participantes en la iglesia,
comparado con el del 2013 que fue de 3,564. El numero esta
creciendo. Pero no debemos olvidad qe tenemos 1,700 familias registradas en nuestra parroquia. Debiamos tener mas de
7,000 feligreses. Donde estan el 50% que falta cada fin de
semana? Guardemos esta pregunta para despues y continuemos con la siguiente: “Que es lo que haremos para ellos y
con ellos?” Debemos reconocer que los que estan sin jesus y
sin su Iglesia son gente pobre de espiritu, y es nuestra mission
de acogerlos con amor y compartir con ellos nuestra alegria.
El Papa Francisco escribio su mensaje para el 89 Domingo
Mundial de las Misiones, el cual estamos celebrando hoy:
“Nos preguntamos a nosotros mismos: ‘Quien sera el primero
al que el mensaje del evangelio sera proclamado’? La
respuesta, la encontramos a menudo en el evangelio, es claro:
es para el pobre, los pequenos y los enfermos, aquellos
quienes son olvidados y menospreciados, aquellos que nos
pueden re-pagar (cf. Lk 14:13-14). La evangelizacion dirigida
preferiblemente al menor de entre nosotros es un signo de que
el Reino que Jesus vino a traer: ‘Hay un inseparable vincula
entre nuestra fe y el pobre. Posiblemente nunca los abandonemos’ (Evangelii Gaudium, 48).”
Vivamos la Palabra de Dios
Por todos aquellos que no tienen una comunidad de creyentes
que los sostengan – oramos.
El siervo de Isaías es como el anciano sabio y arrugado, cuya
entrega abnegada fue lo que ayudó a salvar su matrimonio, o
sea que a sabiendas y por propia voluntad cargó con la culpa
de otros. Ésa es también nuestra imagen de Jesús. Es así
también nuestra propia imagen?
