MICHAEL P ARISH | C HICAGO, I LLINOIS www.saintmichaelchicago.org 2 From the desk of Fr. Torma, Del escritorio del Padre Torma, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Mc 1, 14-20 A change in attitudes and in human structures frequently calls accepted values into question, especially among young people, who have grown impatient on more than one occasion, and indeed become rebels in their distress. Aware of their own influence in the life of society, they want a part in it sooner. This frequently causes parents and educators to experience greater difficulties day by day in discharging their tasks. The institutions, laws and modes of thinking and feeling as handed down from previous generations do not always seem to be well adapted to the contemporary state of affairs; hence arises an upheaval in the manner and even the norms of behavior. Gaudium et Spes, Pastoral Constitution On the Church In the Modern World, Paragraph 7 In modern society many changes have happened from one generation to the next. Since 1950 the culture of the United States has changed a lot. When people migrate from their home culture to another country the children are influenced by the local society into which they are born. The second generation is different from the parents who migrated. Religious and Family values are challenged and the children are different from the parents. Even though the culture is changed the kingdom of God is still among us. We need to live according to the Word of God and worship with prayer, songs and ritual. Since 1965 many rituals of the Catholic Church have changed but the values of the Kingdom of God are the same. Each person needs to keep God in society as we struggle to live with the changes brought on us through the passage of time and the change of the places we live. 3 RD S UNDAY IN O RDINARY TIME Celebrating Catholic Education Breakfast Tuesday, January 27 Archbishop Blase J.
