En los Estados Unidos, el Seguro Social se refiere al
programa federal de Edad Avanzada,
Sobrevivientes y Discapacidad (OASDI por sus
siglas en inglés). La Ley del Seguro Social original
(1935) y la versión actual de la Ley, en su versión
modificada, abarca varios programas de bienestar
social y seguro social.
El Seguro Social es financiado principalmente a
través de impuestos de nómina dedicados
llamados Ley de Contribución al Seguro Federal
(FDIC por sus siglas en inglés). Los depósitos
fiscales son formalmente confiados al Fondo
Fiduciario de Seguro de Edad Avanzada y
Sobrevivientes o al Fondo Fiduciario de Seguro
Federal Médico Suplementario que comprende al
Fondo Fiduciario del Seguro Social.

In the United States, Social Security refers to
Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance
(OASDI) federal program. The original Social
Security Act (1935) and the current version
of the Act, as amended encompass several
social welfare and social insurance
programs.
Social Security is primarily funded through
dedicated payroll taxes called Federal
Insurance Contributions Act (FDIC). Tax
deposits are formally entrusted to the
Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance
Trust Fund, or the Federal Supplementary
Medical Insurance Trust Fund which
comprise the Social Security Trust Fund.
By dollars paid, the U.S. Social Security
program is the largest government program
in the world and the single greatest
expenditure in the federal budget, with
20.8% for Social Security, compared to
20.5% for discretionary defense and 20.1%
for Medicare/Medicaid. In 2003 the
combined spending for all social insurance
programs was 37% of government
expenditure and 7% of the gross domestic
product. Social Security is currently
estimated to keep roughly 40%, of all
Americans age 65 and older out of poverty.
A limited form of the Social Security
program began, during President Franklin D.
Roosevelt's first term in office, as a measure
to implement "social insurance" during the
Great Depression of the 1930's, when
poverty rates among senior citizens
exceeded 50%. The Act was an attempt to
limit what were seen as dangers in the
modern American life, including old age,
poverty, unemployment, and the burdens of
widows and fatherless children.
In 1937 the total dollars paid to beneficiaries
of the program was $1,278,000.00 for

p.m., setting off a handful of small dy-
namite “torpedoes,” adding loud bangs
to the sounds of its own whistle and a
cheering crowd.
Hector Feliciano got hired as a locomotive engineer July 12, 1970. At that
time it was the Milwaukee Railroad
operating freight service out of Elgin,
and torpedoes were still in use as safety
devices for trains. Tuesday — 42 years
after he was hired — Feliciano pulled
into the Chicago Street Metra Station
on his last run, having never worked
anywhere else but the Elgin line.
“Being a locomotive engineer, it’s
like a dream come true,” Feliciano said.
“It’s an opportunity that was presented
to me and I knew that it’s one that you
took and you took care of it.”
Feliciano grew up in Elgin and got
the job through his friend’s dad, who
was also an engineer. Back before Metra bought the line and became a huge
corporation with its own human resources department, all Feliciano had
to do was walk up to the Elgin Depot
on Chicago Street and say who sent
him. He got hired on the spot.
A lot more has changed since Feliciano started his career. Some of the
units and coaches he used to operate
when he started are now in the Illinois
Railway Museum in Union.
“They’re museum pieces,” Feliciano
said, laughing. “And that’s probably
what they’re calling me.”
Feliciano, 62, plans to enjoy retirement by spending more time with his
wife and traveling — first stop Puerto
Rico. then a cruise to South America.
“It’s just been such a thrill working,”
Feliciano said. “It’s been a good life.”

(NCH) — Northwest Community Healthcare (NCH) ha expandido una iniciativa que

1 tablespoon salt (optional)
1 1-pound box bow-tie pasta
3 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
3/4 cup creamy peanut butter
1/2 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 tablespoon hot sauce
1 1-inch piece fresh ginger, grated
2 tablespoons sugar
3 large mangos (about 3 pounds total),
peeled, pitted and diced
2 red bell peppers, seeded and diced
2 scallions, chopped
1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro
INSTRUCTIONS:
Bring 4 quarts of water to boil in a large
pot. Add salt and pasta and cook according
to package instructions for al dente. Reserve
1 cup cooking water. Drain pasta in colander, rinse with cold water, drain again and
transfer to large bowl. Add toasted sesame
oil and toss to coat. In a separate large bowl,
whisk peanut butter, soy sauce, vinegar, hot
sauce, ginger and sugar; adding pasta water
as needed to thin. Add cooled pasta, mango,

Steve Jakuczak stops in Starbucks at The
Streets of Woodfield every morning for his
grande Italian in a vente cup. Yet, recently
the 39-year-old Rolling Meadows man was
back at the bustling coffee house with an Argus Pegasus IPA in his hand as he chatted up
a co-worker.
Nearby, 22-year-old Ben Smith of Schaumburg sipped a Brachette Rosé Regale and
sampled a caramelized onion crostini while
his friend enjoyed a passion fruit iced tea.
At Starbucks?
Yes, at Starbucks.
The Schaumburg shop is the first of five in
the suburbs and Chicago to debut the coffee
chain’s new “Evenings” menu that features
wine, beer and light bites. The Starbucks at
the Burr Ridge Village center is expected to
unveil the same evening menu next week;
three Chicago stores will offer the menu by
the year’s end. Los Angeles and Atlanta are
next on the list. Until now, only shops in Seattle and Portland, Ore., had the expanded
menu.
Rachel Antalek, director of concepts for
the Seattle-based company, said Chicagoarea based focus groups helped Starbucks
refine the idea and it made sense to debut the
concept in a store that already had a bigger
footprint and a cozy atmosphere.
“We wanted to create an environment
where people can sit and relax and chat and
can connect with each other,” Antalek said.
“This is not a restaurant; it still feels casual ...
like a Starbucks.”

and have bartending licenses.
So how has the concept been received?
“I”m here a lot now already, but I never
thought I would be drinking wine at Starbucks, which I love,” Smith said.
Said Jakubczak, “I’ll stop here and have a
drink before I go have some drinks because
it’s close to the office. It’s not the place for
debauchery.”

New wave Latin rock finds
mainstream success in U.S.
(AP) MIAMI — Gaby Moreno steps onto
the stage of the dark Miami club, cradling her
guitar. Glasses clink. Voices ricochet across
the walls. The diminutive singer with a mop
of dark curls opens her mouth, channeling
Etta James, Edith Piaf and Dolly Parton —
all in Spanish.
The Guatemalan native’s eclectic mix of
sounds has captivated more than people in
intimate venues. She’s won a strong, devoted
following in the United States and has had a
taste of mainstream success with the instrumental theme of the NBC comedy “Parks and
Recreation,” which she cowrote.
Moreno is among a small but growing
number of alternative musicians and rockers
who sing mostly in Spanish but are gaining a
diverse fan base across the United States.
These artists barely get play on commercial Spanish radio stations, dominated by
hip-hop, salsa, regional Mexican music and
by pop stars such as Alejandro Sanz. Yet they
are attracting new listeners through social
media, public radio shows, cable TV and festivals.
Tomas Cookman, president of the independent label Nacional Records, likens the
Latin alternative movement in the United
States to new wave before the bands Blondie
and The Cars made it on to the airwaves.
“There’s a major explosion of creativity,
not just from music in Latin America but
from musicians who happen to be Latino in
the U.S.,” he said. “We are definitely still in the
early stages.”
Moreno, who also sings in English, said
big labels didn’t know what do with her — a
problem for many Latin alternative artists.
“Every label wanted to turn me into something else,” she said.
In 2008, she finally released an album
on her own, incorporating her first love, the
blues.
“I just found the passion for it and never
felt like, ‘Oh I’m Latin and shouldn’t be doing
it,”’ she said. “I’m just an artist doing blues”
— albeit one who often sings en español and

“Gaby definitely represents that new model of the relationship between Latin America
and the U.S. The spirit is very Latin, but the
career really got jump started in the U.S.,”
said Ernesto Lechner, music critic and author
of “Rock en Español: The Latin Alternative

Spanish rock and alternative groups hit
a golden period in the late 1990s and early
2000s, when the likes of Mexico’s Café Tacuba and Colombia’s Aterciopelados blended
European and U.S. rock with their own countries’ native beats. Yet the genre came of age
just as hip-hop overtook rock in the United
States, and as the major record labels were
struggling to stay afloat with the explosion
of online music and were increasingly risk
adverse to untested sounds. The movement
never took off the way some had hoped.
Now, alternative Latin musicians, some of
whom have fan bases back home, are finding
new audiences in the United States thanks in
part to that online scene and the growth of
second generation Latino audiences.
Lechner’s radio show, which features artists such as Uruguay’s Juan Campodonico
and Mexico’s Natalia Lafourcade, launched
in 2009 out of a local Albany, N.Y., public radio station. It’s now broadcast by more than
30 stations across the country.
In 2010, NPR also created an online podcast of Latin alternative music, and Pandora,
the Internet radio site that matches music to
users’ tastes, is expanding its Latin alternative library. Cookman and Norek, also a Nacional executive, launched the Latin Alternative Music Conference in 1999 in New York to

Tracy Letts will forever mark a beginning
of sorts for Naperville actor Tommy RiveraVega.
The 23-year-old North Central College graduate has come a long way from his
basketball-playing days in Puerto Rico to his
recent debut in the Steppenwolf Theatre production “Three Sisters,” a humorous Russian
drama about a family caught between the
nostalgia for their past life in Moscow and the
longing for a different future.
Although he has no lines as part of the
ensemble cast, Rivera-Vega said it is a great
opportunity for him to learn from Steppenwolf’s most talented, including Tony Awardwinning director Anna D. Shapiro and seasoned Chicago actors Ora Jones and Alana
Arenas. He shared with us what he’s learned
so far.
Q: What does an ensemble member
do?
Rivera-Vega: It’s a lot of learning. In the
beginning of the play, I’m a servant and then
I’m a poor man and sing this song in Russian.
It has been the biggest challenge to understand the Russian and make it sound authentic. I’ve learned to do more than memorize
and actually understand the lines.
Q: What does it mean to work in a Steppenwolf production?
Rivera-Vega: I am a big Tracy Letts and
Ana Shapiro fan. I follow them and come to
all their Steppenwolf shows — it’s one of the
theaters that every actor in Chicago dreams
to be a part of. Just the fact that I’m here, that
I get to watch stars like Ora Jones, it’s overwhelming in the best of ways and incredible.
Q: What’s your impression of Chicago’s
theater world?
Rivera-Vega: In Chicago it’s so familiar.
Everyone knows each other and is happy for
each other’s success. It’s not like other towns
where it’s all about who gets the role and
stepping on others to get ahead. I’ve been in
auditions in New York too and it’s real — the
competition — like that show “Smash.”
Q: Do Latino actors stick together?
Rivera-Vega: We kind of all know each
other because it is a close group of actors. We
all go to the same auditions and go to see each
other in shows. And yeah, there are Latino
shows by Teatro Vista, Teatro Luna which are
mostly all Hispanic and there’s Victory Garden Theater, all about ethnicity and bringing
ethnic themes into plays.
Q: Has acting always been your dream?
Rivera-Vega: I used to play basketball my
whole life. I competed around the island on
different teams and was pretty pro but I got
injured and took a break. My first real taste of
acting was when they filmed “Dirty Dancing:
Havana Nights” in Old San Juan. They chose
me to be one of the students in the movie and
it was really exciting to see a big production.
I used to dance in a company in Puerto Rico
and there was a college fair, and we were
asked to perform in it. North Central College
saw me and invited me to come see the campus. I fell in love with it.
Q: Does your family support your career?
Rivera-Vega: They have been great. My
dad is a musician — a pretty well-known bass

player — and my family has always supported me. They told me if I wanted to do this I
had to go to the U.S. because here I can work
as an actor.

charts this month.
Moreno is set to release her latest album,
“Postales,” in September on the new independent label of veteran Guatemalan Ricardo Arjona pop star Ricardo Arjona.
“It’s an eclectic mix,” she said, “a spaghetti
western, a soul number, blues, ragtime jazz.”

‘Jagger’ single and new album reinvent Maroon 5
(AP) -- Adam Levine knows the game.
Seconds after sitting down for an on-camera interview and before any questions
are asked, the frontman playfully
rattles off canned responses he’s
used in recent months while promoting “The Voice” and the band’s
fourth album.
“It is our poppiest record ever.
We’re really embracing the pop side.
Christina (Aguilera) and I are all
good. We don’t fight,” he says brightly.
“I feel great about this record! Probably our best ever!”
He lets out a stagy, fake chuckle, and
it’s clear that the 33-year-old Los Angeles native both relishes the spotlight and
has been around long enough to grow a
smidgen tired of its glare.
Thus the title of the album, “Overexposed,” which finds the five-man group at
its commercial peak 10 years after its debut
“Songs About Jane.” Last year’s stand-alone
single “Moves Like Jagger,” featuring the
aforementioned Aguilera, stayed at No. 1 on
Billboard’s Hot 100 for a month. “Overexposed’s” lead single “Payphone” is now in the
top five.
Levine and guitarist James Valentine
spoke with The Associated Press in a recording studio about Maroon 5’s “identity issues,”
educating young fans and why Levine doesn’t
plan to go solo.
Q. Why “Overexposed” as an album
title?
Levine. We thought we would just kind of
say it before everybody else did. ... My face is
on buses, which is a trip and it’s weird. ... The
“Jagger” tune propelled us into the stratosphere even more, combined with the show
and a lot of things that are happening right
now.
Q. And do the songs address that as
well?
Levine. They’re love songs and they’re
songs about dysfunction but also songs about
having a good time. I used to have to be miserable to write a song. And that’s kind of gone
away.
Valentine. It’s weird because when things
are going well for him, he’s just not inspired
to write, because he’s enjoying life and enjoying being in those moments. Then as soon as
things get a little hairy, then all of (the) sudden songs come out, which is good for us.
Levine. But we also have the moments
that I think are just speaking more universally. ... That kind of clarity is what’s best about
the record. ... It’s not shrouded in too much
metaphor and ambiguity and poetry. I used
to think about it much more poetically, but I

with making everyone understand
what I mean and what I’m feeling.
Q. Your 14-year-old fans likely don’t
understand what a pay phone is, though.
Levine. Payphones and Mick Jagger
could be considered things that some kids
don’t know about. I think that actually if you
did some sort of poll, you’d say: “What’s a pay
phone? Who is Mick Jagger?” I think you’d
be shocked by how similar the responses
were from that particular demographic.
Valentine. We’re like history teachers!
Q. Do you feel there was a pre-“Jagger”
Maroon 5 and a post-“Jagger” Maroon 5?
Valentine. Definitely. “Jagger” sort of laid
down a blueprint for what we’re going to do
next. We were definitely due for a change,
and I think we were definitely going to go in
some new directions, but (with) the success
of “Jagger,” of course we’re going to try doing
some more stuff like that.
Levine. Also if “Jagger” was us dipping
our toe into the water, we launched into the
river on this record, which was cool because
I think that our band has had some identity
issues over the past few years and we’ve been
wrestling between trying to stick to being a
band in a traditional sense and that clearly
wasn’t really working. ... Maybe going a bit
poppier or kind of like embracing the pop
music side of our band on this record makes
who we are much more clear.
Q. Adam, could you see yourself going

I’m just not interested. I never have been. I’d
sooner start another band. And why would I
want to start over as myself? I have enough
ego satisfaction being on “The Voice” and
having my own shtick and all that stuff.

Ahora que estamos en la temporada de
lectura de verano, brindo por la elección de
un libro que uno escoge por un motivo y termina tratando sobre algo diferente y mucho
más importante.
Es así como encontré tres libros sobre los
hispanos y otros trabajadores inmigrantes
mientras búscaba aprender más acerca de los
alimentos y cómo se consumen en EEUU.
Lo más notable es que ninguno trata específicamente sobre inmigración ni fueron
escritos por autores hispanos — quienes son
normalmente relegados a la sección “étnica”
en un rincón de la biblioteca, con poca probabilidad de ser leídos por no hispanos. Y, realmente, los que no son hispanos se beneficiarían más de aprender sobre la inmigración en
una forma que esté libre de tintes políticos.
Comencemos con el libro de Barry Estabrook, “Tomatoland”. En los últimos años
he escuchado a los amantes de la cocina lamentarse de que los tomates comprados en
las tiendas carecen de sabor. Pero puesto que
nunca he cultivado tomates y no puedo distinguir la diferencia, quería llegar al fondo del

books about Hispanic and other immigrant laborers while on a quest to learn
more about food and how Americans
eat it.
Let’s start with Barry Estabrook’s
“Tomatoland.” For the last few years
I’ve been hearing foodies lament that
store-bought tomatoes lack flavor. But
since I’ve never grown my own and
can’t perceive the difference, I wanted
to get to the bottom of the tasteless tomato debate.
Tracie McMillan’s “The American
Way of Eating” confronts the contradiction of our country’s obsession with
food coupled with our rampant malnutrition, young people’s lack of cooking
skills, and the pervasive belief that only
the rich can afford to eat well.
“Valley of Shadows and Dreams,” a
photo book by Ken and Melanie Light,
adds striking images to the experiences
of farm workers who toil for our sustenance in the Great Central Valley of
California.
Ingesting these three books — free
of the usual political agendas, ethnic
grievances and fear of cultural change
that color most writings on the topic of
Hispanic laborers in today’s economy
— you get a feel for how deeply interwoven in this country’s economic fabric
these oftentimes illegal workers really
are.
And it’s fundamental to any intelligent conversation about immigration.

Coral reefs are underwater structures made from
calcium carbonate secreted by corals. Coral reefs are
colonies of tiny living animals found in marine waters
that contain few nutrients.
Most coral reefs are built from stony corals,
which in turn consist of polyps that cluster in groups.
The polyps are like tiny sea anemones, to which they
are closely related.
Unlike sea anemones, coral polyps secrete hard
carbonate exoskeletons which support and protect
their bodies. Reefs grow best in warm, shallow, clear,
sunny and agitated waters.
Often called “rainforests of the sea”, coral reefs
form some of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth.
They occupy less than 0.1 percent of the world’s
ocean surface, about half the area of France, yet they
provide a home for 25 percent of all marine species,
including fish, mollusks, worms, crustaceans, echinoderms, sponges, tunicates and other cnidarians.
