SETON Sunday News The Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church - A Missionaries of the Holy Spirit Community TENTH Sunday in Ordinary Time June 5, 2016 Year C Volume 2 Number 28 INTENTIONAL DISCIPLES Forgive (Part 6) pg 4-5 2 | The SETON Sunday News | Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 06/05/16 The Readings Today Jesus’ healing ministry (see gospel: Luke 7:11-17 The raising of the widow’s dead son) was a “sneak preview” of what is yet to come when the reign of God is fully established. We see healing in our midst and people brought to life in many different ways (see first reading: 1 Kings 17:17-24 Elijah’s faith restores the boy to life). Do we notice it? Do we expect it? What does it mean to be restored to life? What do we hope for from God’s promises? For Paul it is the authority that comes directly from Christ (second reading: Gal 1:11-19). Daily Spiritual Nourishment Mon., June 6: 1 Kings 17:1-6; Matt 5:1-12 Blessed are ... The Sermon on the Mount is three chapters long in Matthew’s Gospel, but before a single instruction is given to the newly gathered disciples, there is one blessing after another. The blessings come first. If God’s blessings were given only to those who deserve them, they would come at the end: “Do this, and then you will be blessed.” But Jesus begins his sermon with blessings. Tues., June 7: 1 Kings 17:7-16; Matt 5:13-16 You are the salt of the earth. Salt is an ordinary substance, but it’s also a precious commodity because we cannot live without it. In the ancient world, salt was used much as we use money (that’s where we get “salary”). Wed., June 8: 1 Kings 18:20-39; Matt 5:17-19 Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Jesus broke the commandments of his faith, confronted the Pharisees and challenged the law as it had been interpreted. Jesus’ words remind us that it’s Administration Roberto Saldivar, M.Sp.S., Pastor Mario Rodriguez, M.Sp.S., Vicar Jorge Gomez del Valle, M.Sp.S., Vicar Santos Mendoza, M.Sp.S., Brother Craig Lundberg, Deacon Shannon Everist, Pastoral Asst. for Administration Lori Lowery, Secretary all too easy to become focused on the letter of the law. “To fulfill” means moving beyond the letter of the law to discern and do the will of God. Thurs., June 9: 1 Kings 18:41-46; Matt 5:20-26 Whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment. The sixth commandment is clear: You shall not kill. But just as serious, just as damaging, Jesus says, are resentment, name-calling, even anger. Those who claim to love God cannot “kill” others with insults, hatred and prejudice. Fri., June 10: 1 Kings 19:9a, 11-16; Matt 5:27-32 Elijah, why are you here? In the “tiny, whispering sound,” Elijah rose above the despair and remained faithful to his call as a prophet. Sat., June 11: Acts 11:21b-26, 13:1-3; Matt 5:33-37 Memorial of Barnabas, apostle Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ In the United States, we are now about four months away from electing a new president. The truth is that, as human beings, we will never be sufficiently prepared to let go of those we love. The pain many go through, usually turns into a rebellion against life and we blame God for the suffering. How difficult it becomes for me to comfort these people or help them have peace. In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus meets a funeral procession on the gates of the city of Nain (about 65 miles from Jerusalem). The scene is very touching; a mother is about to bury her only son. How difficult it must have been for her! Jesus is certainly not indifferent to her sorrow and thus His words of consolation were: “Do not cry, woman.” As I stopped to meditate on His words I thought: “why wouldn’t she cry, why wouldn’t she mourn her son? We cannot contain our tears… it is good to cry, it is good to let it out! If we hold it in, it will certainly hurt more! Those who do not mourn a loved one but repress their feelings, sooner or later those feelings will come forth and create a more difficult situation. But Jesus was not referring to this kind of repressiveness, what he refers to LIFE AT... Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 06/05/16 | The SETON Sunday News | 3 with the expression “woman, don’t cry” is: “woman don’t fall into the trap of despair, don’t think of death as the end of life, don’t give up, don’t abandon your hope and love for your son.” And this becomes the invitation for us as well. We must not cry for the passing away of a loved one, for death is not the end. Jesus is bringing us hope; death is the beginning of new life, the beginning of eternity with God. We will all come to this moment, each of us will have our own special time (don’t be afraid to ask God for the date of that special moment. I have always asked God that I don’t want to die abruptly, I want to prepare myself even if that means to suffer… but then I want to die on the day I was baptized: July 6). In the Gospel Jesus cried upon seeing how this woman was hurting and He also cries for us because he knows the pain we go through as we transition from the physical world to eternity. Our feelings are inevitable but they become even more difficult when faith, hope and love are lost. But if faith, hope and love are present for us, then we must not cry, the same invitation of Jesus to the woman of One of the goals we have set ourselves is for stability in the communities. Roberto Saldivar, M.Sp.S. 4 | The SETON Sunday News | Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 06/05/16 Intentional Disciples Forgive “Father, forgivethem, theyknownotwhattheydo.” Luke23:34 Initial Questions Let’ssharesomethingaboutForgiveness…. What is forgiveness? Why is forgiveness hard? Why might forgiveness be essential to understanding Jesus’ mission? Why might forgiveness be essential to understanding our mission as disciples? When Jesus says that he came for “the forgiveness of sins.” He means all of this. Forgiveness is important! SEAS LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN... Jesus, let us hear your call anew. Bless us with the courage to respond. Clear away all barriers. Send your Holy Spirit and make us your disciples. Jesus, Savior of all People… Save them! Forgiveness is central to Jesus’ mission and message. We pray for forgiveness every time we pray the Lord’s Prayer. Here’s the catch: We pray for forgiveness only to the degree we’re willing to forgive others. That means we better get pretty good at forgiving. Forgiveness is hard! There are often many different components of forgiveness: Recognizing our own need for forgiveness Accepting that we are forgivable Asking for forgiveness (from God and others) Accepting that we are forgiven Forgiving others “Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and over lowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.” Luke 6:37-38 MYTHS:FORGIVENESSISNOT... PRETENDING THAT NOTHING TOOK PLACE. Don’t lie to yourself. ... FORGETTING. With forgiving, memory loses its poison, but it doesn’t change the past. ... EXCUSING THE OFFENDER. Forgiveness tries to understand, not excuse, lest we forget the offender is a human being; don’t rob him of responsibility. ... RETURNING EVERYTHING TO “AS IT WAS.” Damage was done; repair, if possible, takes time. ... MEASURED BY THE ABSENCE OF FEELING. ... GIVEN ON COMMAND. Forgiveness is a process of healing; it takes time. It begins with prayer to be able to forgive. Like love, forgiveness must be freely given or else it is not real. Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 06/05/16 | The SETON Sunday News | 5 This week meditate on these short Scripture Texts gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink from referring to Jesus’ Mission: it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the Luke 1:76-79 forgiveness of sins. [Zechariah, father of John the Baptist] “And you, child, will be called prophet of the Most High, for you Luke 23:33-34 will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give When they came to the place called the Skull, they his people knowledge of salvation through the cruci ied him and the criminals there, one on his forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy right, the other on his left. Then Jesus said, "Father, of our God by which the daybreak from on high will forgive them, they know not what they do." visit us to shine on those who sit in darkness and death's shadow, to guide our feet into the path of Luke 24:46-48 peace.” And he said to them, "Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the Matthew 26:26-28 third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the sins, would be preached in his name to all the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses "Take and eat; this is my body." Then he took a cup, of these things. In prayer answer the following question: Why is forgiveness central to Jesus’ mission? KeyInsights Forgiveness is everywhere in the Gospels. If we allow forgiveness to be an abstract concept, we fail to allow it to challenge us. God wants to forgive us. God wants us to forgive others. Every disciple should understand forgiveness as central to discipleship. Of all the Gospels, Luke places the greatest emphasis on forgiveness as central to Jesus mission. We get this at the beginning through the Canticle of Zechariah, and among Jesus’ last words to his disciples. Only in Luke, do we receive Jesus’ most powerful example of forgiveness from the cross. However, it is Matthew who places forgiveness at the heart of the New Covenant that Jesus establishes through his death and resurrection. I should note that the word “many” in Jesus’ words at the Last Supper means the multitudes. The Church believes that Jesus gives his life for everyone while still recognizing that not everyone will accept Jesus’ offering. WHOMDOINEEDTOFORGIVE? When I harbor a grudge, real or imagined, fair or unfair, it shapes me and poisons me. I need to let it go by forgiving. Parents who disappointed you A spouse who changed into someone else A child who doesn’t live your dreams The friend who let you down The friend who abandoned you by dying or moving The co-worker who didn’t speak up for you. The company that does not recognize your efforts The Church that tells you what to do, but doesn’t help you to do it The nation that conquered your ancestors The perpetrators of discrimination God who allowed your child to die. God who doesn’t make the world better just for you God who doesn’t give you the happiness your religiosity deserves God who wants you to be more than you are Yourself For putting yourself in a situation where you let yourself be hurt For putting yourself down For enduring a bad relationship too long For being a perfectionist and not letting yourself make mistakes 6 | The SETON Sunday News | Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 06/05/16 Sección en Español Mensaje del Párroco Como sacerdote he tenido oportunidad de ver el dolor de muchas personas que rehúsan aceptar la muerte repentina de un hijo, hermano, cónyuge o padre. Mario Rodriguez, MSpS————— Each one of us has been created very carefully and lovingly. God has taken the time in Eternity to imagine and create us. In the Book of Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you.” Even then God had the plan and journey to happiness for us; it is just a matter of uncovering His plan and responding to the graces God gives us in each stage of our life. We have been created to live, but also to be HOLY and be in full communion. Our inner being is hungry for communion and for deep relationships. We are thirsty to be in deep relationships with others, but above all, our being longs to be with God. Fr. Felix Rougier invites us: “If we correspond to those graces, which are inherently OURS through the mercy and endless generosity of God toward us, we will surely make OUR TRUE PERSONALITY bloom and grow, in accordance with the eternal plan. Not in the sense of the SELFISH ME, which feeds on concupiscence and pride, rather ascending ever higher, until we reach a union more and more intimate with our Creator.” Make life bloom through communion with God. This is the mission we have by being Christian. Let it be noticed that you have found love in Jesus Christ the Savior, and that it is Christ who gives meaning to all of our existence. In Jesus we will find ways to see our personality mature day by day. We can all be today better than we were yesterday, Jesus invites us to believe that, and do as much as we can to make the transformation happen. Take courage, believe that you have been created to do wonders in the name of God. God makes you a prophet of His message of Mercy and Peace for all humanity. You are a disciple and witness of LOVE INCARNATE. Eres discípulo y testigo del AMOR ENCARNADO. 8 | The SETON Sunday News | Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 06/05/16 A WAITING HARVEST Vocation Awareness PADRE SERRA SAYS: Jesus called each one us to a vocation, not just our priests and religious. Our Church needs committed lay ministers to spread the Gospel in our world. Some of us have heard the Word of God preached by lay ministers at a special time of year in our parishes. Some of our parishes may have lay pastoral associates who administer the parish because there is no full-time priest/pastor. Most of us encounter lay ministers of the Eucharist at our Sunday celebrations, as lectors and altar servers. Many of the homebound are regularly visited by lay ministers of care who pray the Scriptures with them and distribute Communion. These are but a few of the ministries that lay people are called to. Ask yourself — how can I serve? Do you have your “shoulder to the wheel?” Are you “pulling an oar in the ship of our Church?” Can you befriend the lonely, visit the sick, assist the elderly, prepare and give homilies? If so, sound off. Let us inform our pastors of the talents we are ready to freely offer to serve our parish. Christ said, “I came to serve, not to be served.” How about you?
