3RD ANNUAL MYLYNWOOD HEALTHY
CITIES 2015 5K/10K RUN/WALK
SANTA FE, SPRINGS
VOLVIENDO A LA ESCUELA MÁS SALUDABLE
Seems like summer will be here for a while, but nothing is going to
stop the 2015-16 school year from starting this month. While some school
districts still start in September like they did back in the day, in Lynwood and
in nearby cities, school this year starts in mid-August.
It’s back to school time and families everywhere are wrapping up
their summer vacations and getting back into work and school mode. In
Lynwood, school starts on August 20. Summer in our great City was short,
but sweet. We had a terrific lineup of events and activities this summer that
kept families busy and united. Events ranged from a giant Juneteenth Unity
Festival, our mega 4th of July Spectacular, a memorable Relay for Life, an
amazing night of Mariachi Under the Stars and not to mention the City’s
ongoing Farmers Market & Street Fair and Movies in the Park at Yvonne Burke/
Ham Park every Thursday through September. No one can ever say that the
summer of 2015 in Lynwood was boring.
The City of Lynwood’s priorities include the safety and well being
of its residents, along with being able to provide the vital services necessary
to keep it moving forward and full of energy, but among its priorities is to
keep residents active, involved, united and happy. When more than 70,000
residents call Lynwood home, vital services are important, as well as law
enforcement and fire services, but at the same time, the City and its officials
strive to keep Lynwood a Safe and Healthy Community. From the City’s Weight
Loss Challenge, to building the City’s first Linear Walking Park, to our Farmers
Market, the City works hard toward creating activities that not only keep
families active, but also serve as forms of encouragement for families to lead
healthier lifestyles.
With fall right around the corner, the City’s youth athletic programs
are starting to kick in to keep youth active after-school. The Lynwood Unified
School District, along with an array of entities throughout the City including
the Lynwood Senior Center, is also doing their part in keeping our community
healthy. Families can also participate in the upcoming MyLynwood Healthy
Cities 5K/10K Run&Walk on September 19, 2015 at Lynwood Park to continue
staying active in the fall months.
There’s no doubt about it, the City of Lynwood has become a vibrant,
progressive, safer and healthier community over the years and with a new
Safe and Healthy Communities General Plan Element in tow, the City’s future
is bright. If we want to keep it that way, we need to be involved, stay informed,
shop in Lynwood, conserve water and when we see something wrong, we
need to speak up. It may be back to school season, and days will get longer
and we will all get busier, but let’s not forget that we have to work together
to keep Lynwood a Safe and Healthy Community.
HONOR
CITY CALENDAR PREVIEW
GOING BACK TO SCHOOL HEALTHIER
Segura y Saludable.
KID MAYOR FOR JULY IS AMERICA
NIÑA ALCALDE ES AMÉRICA
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect for
America Castaneda to have been selected as the City
of Lynwood’s Kid Mayor for the patriotic month of July.
Not only is this 12 year old on her way to Hosler Middle
School, but she’s also on her way to the White House,
according to her mother.
“I named her America because my mother’s
intuition told me she’s going to be someone great in this nation,” said Jessica Castaneda,
her mom. “Her being named Kid Mayor for the City of Lynwood is just the beginning.
America is smart, dedicated and very responsible. She deserves this opportunity and
more.” Serving as Kid Mayor has instilled in America a greater sense of community.
“Being Kid Mayor has been a really cool experience. I’ve been doing research on what
it takes to be an elected officials and it seems like it’s a lot of work, but I want to do it,
especially if I’m going to be helping people. That’s my calling, I just know it.”
The Kid Mayor Program gives 12 star Lynwood Unified School District students
the opportunity to serve as the junior Mayor of the City for an entire month. One Kid
Mayor is nominated every month by each of the school district’s 12 elementary school’s
teachers.
America was presented with a proclamation, name plaque, badge and a $400
Scholarship. American is the youngest of five children. She has a brother at UCLA and
a sister at UC Berkeley – both of whom graduated from Lynwood schools. With her
scholarship seed money, America plans to follow in her sibling’s footsteps. She said
she knows this is just the beginning. She said she promises not to let the Lynwood City
Council or her teachers down.

NOTICE
LYNWOOD: A SAFE AND
HEALTHY COMMUNITY
The City of Lynwood is developing a Safe and Healthy
Communities General Plan Element, funded through a grant
from the Southern California Association of Governments.
As part of this process, the City of Lynwood is hosting two
community workshops to hear about resident priorities for
health and safety.
The first community workshop was held on June
24th at Bateman Hall where participants shared their vision
for a safe and healthy Lynwood and discussed current health
and safety issues in the community. A second community
workshop will be held in the fall to gather community input
and what policies and programs best address the community’s
vision and needs. The date for the second workshop will be
announced in the Lynwood ‘N Perspective and on the project
website www.healthylynwood.org.
Attendees of the first workshop heard a presentation
that provided an overview of the Safe and Healthy
Communities General Plan Element process, the connection
between community planning, health and safety, and
summarized the City’s current health and safety conditions
through maps and data. Attendees were asked to think about
any physical, social and/or economic aspects of Lynwood
that influence them and their community’s health and safety
either negatively or positively. No idea was too big or too
small, or too crazy or too boring. Attendees also made an
array of suggestions to make Lynwood a safer and healthier
community including: Affordable housing, less overcrowding,
active business corridors, larger retailers, fewer liquor stores,
more restaurants, jobs, educational trainings, economic
development, a movie theater, more parks, relaxation areas,
community gardens, bicycle lanes, safer streets, no gangs, no
motels, clean water, less pollution, trash removal, a homeless
shelter, more exercising activities, youth spaces, bully-free
schools, more afterschool programs, and more transparency
at the City level. Attendees all agreed that they would like
Lynwood to be a City where families of all income levels could
thrive.
City officials want residents to know that all of these
ideas are being taken seriously. Over the last couple of years,
as part of the state-wide Healthy Cities Initiative, the City
of Lynwood has been implementing an array of events and
activities that encourage Lynwood families to lead healthier
and more active lifestyles. From the City’s annual Weight Loss
Challenge, to the MyLynwood Healthy Cities 5K/10L Run&Walk,
to its Farmers Market – the City and its officials strive to keep
Lynwood active. Healthier eateries are also being established
throughout the community. While there is still a long way to
go to make this City everyone’s ideal City, everyone’s input is
vital in formulating the new Safe and Healthy Communities
General Plan Element.
To provide your input, please participate in a
35-question survey that is being provided to residents.
The survey is available online at:

proyecto www.healthylynwood.org.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HealthyLynwood
Español:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/lynwoodSaludable
Ciudad a elaborar políticas y programas y solicitar subsidios.

SAFETY
BACK TO
SCHOOL SAFETY
Parents struggle with many things when
it comes to the safety and security of their
children, but one scary question that a lot of
parents have is whether or not they are safe
walking to and from school while they are at
work. The first day of school is right around the
corner, and just as parents are talking to their
kids about getting to and from school safely,
Century Station’s Lt. Todd Deeds has a few
pointers for school children.
“Children’s safety is of the utmost
importance to all of us,” said Lt. Deeds. “A lot
of parents have jobs, so it is important for them
to talk to their kids about getting to and from
school safely, along with being safe wherever
they are when their parents aren’t around. The
most important piece of advice that we can give
kids is that they should always be aware of their
surroundings and to stay away from strangers.”
Kids nowadays are also more easily
distracted with their electronic devices: such as
having their headphones on, texting, or talking
on their cell phones. It is critical to talk to kids
about being aware of their surroundings and
about how texting or listening to loud music
on their headphones can either distract them
or prevent them from hearing danger coming
toward them, whether it’s a person or a vehicle,
or even an emergency vehicle speeding by.
Going back to school is an exciting
time for kids and for families. Lt. Deeds wants
families to sit down and talk to their schoolaged kids about being cautious of their
surroundings at all times to ensure a happy
and safe new school year. There is no magic age
for when kids can walk or bike to school; it all
comes down to cognitive skills, reasoning and
the ability to follow directions.
STRANGER DANGER TIPS:
» Stay with a group. Always walk with
friends or buddies.
» Don’t take rides from strangers.
» If a stranger follows you on foot, run from
him or her as quickly as you can and yell
loudly, “HELP!” If a stranger follows you
in a car, turn around and run in the other
direction.
» Never leave school with a stranger.
» Tell a trusted adult if you see a stranger
hanging around the school, playground or
public restroom.
» Leave items and clothing that display your
name at home so a stranger cannot read it
and use it to talk to you.
» If you arrive home alone, call your mother,
father, or other trusted adult to let them
know you are home and all right.
» Never accept things or gifts from a stranger.

Toilet flushing 30%
Personal washing –
baths and taps 21%
Personal washing – showers 12%
Clothes washing 13%
Washing up 8%
Outdoor 7%
Other 5%
Drinking 4%
Did you know that only 4% of the
perfectly drinkable water you use every day
is used for drinking? Or that nearly a third of
the water used in your home is literally flushed
down the toilet? What a waste! The good news
is that simple actions can have a big impact.
Healthy teeth, healthy rivers:
Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth – a
running tap wastes over 6 liters per minute.
Short, sharp, showers save water:
A bath typically uses around 80 liters, while
a short shower can use as little as a third of
that amount. But beware since many powershowers may actually use more than a bath. Try
taking shorter showers to reduce the amount
of water you use. When you do have a bath,
you can minimize your water use by reusing
your bathwater to water your houseplants or
garden.
Fill up those dishwashers and
washing machines: Before starting your
washing machine or dishwasher, wait for a
full load – you’ll be able to save money on
energy and water. Familiarize yourself with
your machine’s cycle options. Some settings
provide the same cleaning power as a normal
cycle, but with less water and energy.
Frigid water: Fill a jug with tap
water and leave it to cool in your fridge. This
way you don’t have to run the tap for ages just
to get a cold drink.
Rubbish for rubbish bins: Try to
avoid flushing away cotton balls, make-up
tissues, and those pesky spiders – throwing
them in the bin will cut down on the amount
of water that is wasted by every flush.
Guard against giving your child more freedom than he/she is
prepared to handle.
Discuss what it means to be trustworthy and what happens
when trust is broken.
Remind your child about the family rules that apply even when
they are with other people.
Teach your child to trust their gut. If something doesn’t
feel right, it probably isn’t and they should leave the scene
immediately.
Give your child suggestions about how to get out of situations.
Have agreed upon code words or a phrase that lets you know
they need help.

JUNETEENTH UNITY FESTIVAL
T
he City of Lynwood’s Second Annual
Juneteenth Unity Festival took place
at Lynwood City Park. Juneteenth is
promoted not only as a commemoration
of African-American freedom, but as an
example and encouragement of selfdevelopment and respect for all cultures.
The City of Lynwood joined forces with
the Uniting Nationalities Intelligently
Through Education Coalition (U.N.I.T.E),
local businesses and local legislators
Assemblymen Anthony Rendon, Mike Gipson
and Senators Ricardo Lara and Isadore Hall
III, to unite all of the nationalities of our
communites during a day of culture, spoken
word, history, music, food, fun with a focus
on unity, self-improvement, understanding
and education. Traditionally this event is
free and open to the public. More than a
hundred people brought blankets, lawn
chairs and canopies to enjoy food and arts
and crafts, and of course the music and
games!
THROUGH OUR OWN EYES EXHIBIT
S
t. Francis Medical Center, along with Choose Health L.A. Kids and parents from the Lynwood community, recently created
an exhibit called “Through Our Own Eyes,” a joint effort created to bring attention to unhealthy food and beverage
marketing to children and to mobilize around strategies to create positive change in our community. Parents who
participated in the Parent Collaborative for this project learned how to expose unhealthy food marketing throughout the
community. The parents visited grocery stores, small corner markets, eateries and vending machines scattered throughout
the community where they discovered how sweets are displayed at children’s eye levels, how they are displayed at exit
points of a check-out line, and how unhealthy foods are marketed at a lower cost than healthy foods. During the working
exhibit, the parents also noted that some food establishments and vending machines offered healthy choices for children.
About 100 people attended the “Through Our Own Eyes” photo exhibit on the St. Francis Medical Center lawn for a morning
of colorful displays, dialogue and networking - all aimed at teaching parents/adults to view the marketing world through
children’s eyes.
PHOTOS OF THE MONTH
H
undreds of families turned out for the City’s annual 4th of July
Spectacular at Lynwood Park this year where they were treated to
a fun-filled day of jumpers galore for the children, rock climbing,
a mini-carnival, pony rides, and an awesome food truck festival.
Families filled Lynwood Park from top to bottom, barbecuing, playing
games, dancing, and waiting for the fireworks showcase planned for
9 p.m. that night. It was a spectacular scene to see Lynwood families
enjoying the park, the outdoors, the food vendors, the carnival and
each other’s company. Lynwood organizations continue to sell Safe &
Sane fireworks the week prior to the 4th of July, but it’s still a beautiful
sight to see the thousands of people flock to the park starting at 8
p.m. to watch the City’s annual 4th of July Spectacular – where the
fireworks are set off safely by pyrotechnic professionals – exclusively
for Lynwood Park patrons in celebration of America’s Independence
Day.

ROSA PARKS GARDEN DEDICATION
Rising up from the transcendent beauty of a freshly
planted flower and vegetable garden were the reassuring tones
of the Rosa Parks Elementary School Choir singing “See You
Again” in memory of their beloved kindergarten and fourthgrade teacher, Erica Lott Munn, who passed away earlier this
year after 17 years as an instructor with the Lynwood Unified
School District. City, community and school district officials,
along with southern California business partners, came together
recently to dedicate the Erica Lott Munn Memorial Garden on
a special Beautification Day at Rosa Parks Elementary School.
The Erica Lott Munn Garden was made possible by Mars Food
North America and by the Los Angeles Office of Education, for
awarding Rosa Parks Elementary with a grant for three raised
vegetable gardens. The Mars Food North America Supply Chain
Team supplied labor for the Munn Garden along with donations
of gardening materials and Seeds of Change - seeds to plant a
wealth of spices, flowers, vegetables and even two fruit trees.
Rosa Parks students joined teachers LUSD officials, City officials,
Central Basin Municipal Water District Director Leticia Vasquez,
L.A. County Master Gardener Jake Mumm, and Sheriff ’s explorers
in planting the garden.

Contestants for the City of Lynwood’s popular
Mr. & Miss Lynwood Scholarship Competition for high
school juniors and seniors are gearing up for the big
day. Not your mom’s or grandmother’s regular beauty
pageant, the City of Lynwood’s Mr. & Miss Lynwood
Scholarship Competition called on straight A, talented
student contestants interested in the opportunity to
represent Lynwood, display their talents and compete
for $10,000 in scholarships, as well as the honor of being
crowned Mr. Lynwood and Miss Lynwood.
Taking place on August 22, 2015 at the Lynwood
High School Performing Arts Center, qualifying male
and female contestants over the last two months have
prepared a group presentation based on their skills
and talents and in the competition will have a solo
presentation where they’ll be able to shine individually.
This grand event will culminate with only one
female and one male contestant being crowned Mr. &
Miss Lynwood 2015. Finalists will also get to share in the
$10,000 Scholarship prize money!
“This competition is not your regular beauty
pageant, this is not a fashion show, and it’s not a talent
show,” said Ilu Johnson, one of the coordinators of the
event. “This competition is for individuals who want to
represent the City of Lynwood; it is for individuals who
will be a good influence for our community. Sure there
is a talent portion of this competition, but there’s also
a public speaking portion of this competition, where
students will be asked what they stand for.”
SAFETY
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
YVONNE BURKE/HAM PARK, 11832 ATLANTIC AVE.
The City of Lynwood is hosting its National
Night Out event from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
at Burke-Ham Park, 11832 Atlantic Ave.
This is a new location for this free, annual
gathering sponsored by the City’s Block
Watch Organization. Moving this event to
Burke-Ham Park provides a cost savings to
the City by eliminating the need to prepare
for a street closure on MLK Boulevard and
gives other Lynwood neighborhoods the
opportunity to participate in National Night
Out closer to their own homes. This program
is open to the public, allowing the Lynwood
community to stand in solidarity with
communities all across America in the fight
against crime. Leave your porch lights on and
bring your family, friends, and neighbors to
Burke-Ham Park to enjoy some refreshments
and learn about the many ways that everyone
can participate in reducing and preventing
crime in their own neighborhoods. There will
be demonstrations, exhibits, and information
booths on water conservation, trash hauling,
street repairs and various other City services.

COMMUNITY HEARTS
THURSDAY
NIGHTS IN LYNWOOD
Farmers Market & Street Fair ends SEPTEMBER 3
Every Thursday 4 to 8pm
The 3rd Annual Farmers Market & Street Fair continues to grow
in popularity, especially for its prepared food vendors. From tacos, tamales,
burritos, burgers, hot dogs, kettle popcorn, churros, shaved ice and fruit cups,
this year’s Farmers Market & Street Fair food vendors have grown from just a
handful selling a few menu items to about 15 of them selling an abundance of
delicious foods and treats.
Offering the City’s multicultural community a unique opportunity to
step outside of their homes every Thursday this summer, the City’s third annual
Farmers Market & Street Fair brings together an array of vendors who specialize
in fresh produce, savory foods, sweet treats and novelty products. What’s more,
the Farmers Market & Street Fair takes place right before the City’s Movies in
the Park Program at 8 p.m., giving families an opportunity to eat dinner at the
Farmers Market, and wait for the 8 p.m. family movie to start on the City’s giant
inflatable screen.
Taking place at Yvonne Burke-Ham Park, 11832 Atlantic Ave. this
year’s Farmers Market & Street Fair ends on Thursday, September 3, 2015.
Families have five more Thursdays to go and check out this year’s Farmers
Market & Street Fair, and stay for the weekly Movies in the Park Program at 8
p.m. The food component of the Farmers Market grew a great deal this year, so
before you head off to the movie, don’t forget to satisfy that sweet tooth with
something sweet; such as caramel popcorn, shaved ice with ice cream or a fruit
cup. Kids will also be treated to a face-painting booth thanks to the Recreation
and Community Services Department.
With the Farmer’s Market, the City aims to provide an avenue for
business exposure while giving residents a variety of healthy foods, both raw
and prepared, to eat and enjoy. Thursday nights in the summer in our community
has given a new meaning to the saying, “dinner and a show.” We hope you are
all having a great summer this year. Be safe, happy and healthy and we will see
you all on Thursday nights at Yvonne Burke/Ham Park.

PERMANENT WATER CONSERVATION REQUIREMENTS - PROHIBITION AGAINST WASTE
REQUISITOS DE CONSERVACION PERMANENTE DE AGUA EN LA CIUDAD DE LYNWOOD – SE PROHIBE DESPERDICIAR EL AGUA
▶
▶
Water is Amazing!
It keeps us cool. It keeps us alive, so we can’t keep
taking it for granted. We’re now in the 4th year
of a historic drought and in California, water is
becoming a scarce resource. Stop feeling powerless,
get involved and save water!
Save Water, Save Us is a cry for water conservation, and against water waste. This is a movement
you can join, right now by pledging to change your
own behavior.
Let’s go Lynwood! Every drop counts!

¡El Agua es Valiosa!
Nos mantiene frescos. Nos mantiene vivos, por lo
tanto no podemos seguir desperdiciandola. Ahora,
impotente, involucrese, mantengase informado y
comportamiento. Sí se puede Lynwood. Cada gota cuenta.
¡Sí se puede Lynwood! Cada gota cuenta.
The City of Lynwood has declared a Level 2 Water
Supply Shortage in the City and per Gov. Jerry’s
Brown’s Executive Order, every City in the state of
California MUST implement Conservation Measures
and Enforcement Provisions to make sure the Public
Conserves Water.
The State Water Resources Control Board
is requiring water agencies within the State to
impose conservation measures and water waste
prohibitions, including the implementation of water
shortage contingency plans that include mandatory
restrictions on the number of water days and the
imposition of fines and violations.
While the Metropolitan Water District
supplies potable water to the City of Lynwood
through the Central Basin Municipal Water District, a
majority of our potable water supply is pumped from
the ground. Nonetheless, effective immediately, the
City of Lynwood will meet its obligations to conserve
water, but it needs the compliance of every water
user in the City in the process.
