During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis calls us to
share with everyone the tender compassion of God that we
ourselves have experienced. In today’s Gospel, Luke uses
a special Greek word conveying just such tenderness.
In the other Gospels, Jesus calls the disciples to be
“fishers,” haleis, the same word that means catching fish
with hooks or nets, to be killed and eaten. But Luke uses
zogron, from zoe or “life,” meaning “catch or gather
people alive,” as animal lovers capture without harming,
rescue from “the wild” for a better life, and protect
in aquarium or zoo, tenderly cared for by professionals
committed to the creatures’ well-being. So in Luke’s vision—
and Pope Francis’ as well—we who have been “caught alive” by
God’s mercy ourselves are to become “missionaries of mercy” during
this Jubilee Year of Mercy, rescuing fellow sinners from danger and
gathering them into Jesus’ community to enjoy fullness of life.

Year of Mercy
Lent - Fast and Abstinence Rules
Abstinence - All US Catholics who have
completed their 14th year are bound by the
Law of Abstinence - - abstaining from meat
on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all
other Fridays during Lent. Note that there is
no upper age limit to the law of abstinence.
Fast - All US Catholics who have completed
their 18th year up to the beginning of their
60th year are bound by the Law of Fasting
- - One full meal per day, with 2 lighter meals
to maintain strength. Days of Fast are Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday.
Excused from fast or abstinence (besides those outside the
age limits) are those of unsound mind, the sick, the frail,
pregnant or nursing women according to need for meat or
nourishment, manual laborers according to need - - and
other circumstances that would seriously hinder us in
carrying out our work.
Give Warmth to Those in Need
In this Jubilee Year of Mercy we are asked to perform works of
mercy. What better way than to provide for those who are out in
the cold this Winter. In January we set up a “tree” in front of the
Mission to provide warmth for those in need. This tree contains
scarves, hats, gloves, umbrellas and whatever else you can think of
to help keep a person warm during the winter months. Well, it has
been such a great success, we are having a hard time keeping it filled
and NEED YOUR HELP! If you can knit, crochet, sew, shop, or even
clean out your closets... Your welcomed donations may be dropped
off at the Parish Office and we’ll keep our tree full of warmth.
Notice to Pastoral Care Ministers
We will have individual containers of “ashes” in the Sacristy on
Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2016. If you would like to visit the
person you are ministering to in honor of the start of the Lenton
Season please take ashes to those you serve who are homebound.
Thank you.
Blessings, Patty Moyer Pepper

EFLECTION OF THE WEEK
Gracious God and Father,
we enter into your presence
realizing you know us
better than we know ourselves.
You know the cares and sufferings
we carry in our hearts.
You call us to holiness
and we trust you to
lead us together on our journey
to be a renewed Church,
for with you all things are possible.
We believe you are
doing something new,
calling us to arise together in Christ
to celebrate the fullness of life.
Amen.

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke connected the great fishing
catch with the calling of the
disciples. While it is an important
miracle about the mission of the
disciples, it appears here with the
calling of Peter, James, and John.
Apparently business partners, Peter
called James and John to help him
with the big catch Jesus provided.
The invitation to these three was to
“net in” people for the Kingdom as
abundantly as they had netted in
the fish.
Reflection question:

¿Cómo
ganar la indulgencia jubilar?
QUINTA PARTE: Otros pretextos
que te impiden confesar.
- Me da vergüenza...
Además, no
creas que eres tan original…. Lo que vas a decir, el
cura ya lo escuchó trescientas mil veces… No hay nada
nuevo.
igual”.

nosotros mismos hemos experimentado.
En el Evangelio de hoy, Lucas utiliza
una interesante palabra en griego que
conlleva dicha ternura.
