November 9, 2014 Dedication Lateran Basilica THE TEMPLE AND WORSHIP In all of today’s readings, the temple is prominently mentioned. Ezekiel speaks of streams of living water flowing out from the temple, watering the desert, bringing life to all living things, offering fresh healing to God’s people. Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith rests upon the firmest of foundations, Christ himself. More than that, Paul reveals that those who follow Christ are themselves temples, temples of the Holy Spirit; that is, God dwells not only with them, but in them. For the Jews of Jesus’ time, the temple had come to be identified with the presence of God and the only place where authentic worship of God took place. In the morning is the Diocesan Assembly. Informed by the surveys taken in September, the day will look at important questions for the future of ministry in the Diocese. Resulting in recommendations for the Bishop, consultative bodies, and Chancery to review and implement, each parish will be affected by the Assembly. Please, keep the representatives from around the Diocese in your prayers! In the evening, we will be celebrating the feast of St. Elizabeth. The actual feast is November 17, but we will celebrate after the 4pm Mass on the 15th. I hope many (of all the parishioners) are able to celebrate this part of our parish. Finally, let me offer a word of explanation for why we celebrate today the Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran. St. John Lateran was one of the 7 churches in Rome that Constantine built in the 300’s. It immediately became the residence of the Pope, which did not change until the late 1500’s when the Pope moved to the new St. Peter’s Basilica. For us, in many ways, St. Peter’s is more important today than St. John Lateran. But, that was not always the case. For instance, 5 ecumenical councils were held at the Lateran, while only 2 were at St. Peter’s. (This is where “Vatican II” comes from.) Now, just like St. Peter’s is at the “Vatican” (a section of the city of Rome), St. John is in “Laterano”, the section of the city where the church is located. So, there is no saint named “John Lateran”; the patron of the church is St. John the Evangelist. But, why do we celebrate this feast day? The answer is because it is the Cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. As Bishop of Rome, this is the Pope’s main church (again, despite St. Peter’s place of prominence). And, since we are the Roman Catholic Church, it is important to us as a part of our western Catholic identity. God Bless you, Fr. Que Dios te bendiga, P. Marge O’Malley opened with prayer. Finance Report: Last month income was $45,257.70 and expenses were $35,853.34 with $9,004.39 left. While that sounds good, we are still behind in our assessments to the diocese. We still owe $101,697.00 to the Diocese. Our Assessments have dropped by $500.00 per month. They have decided to pay all parish bills first and keep the Insurance paid up on the building, which comes to $6,000.00 per month. St. Joseph Cultural: At their meeting discussed the Fall Fest and are planning on the Cookie Walk for December 6. They are also taking responsibility of the Chinese Auction. St. Lucy Cultural: No Report Sta. Rosa Cultural: Discussed Fall Fest and are now working on the Our Lady of Quadalupe Mass December 12 at 6:00. Talked about the Three Kings Celebration on January 4th and a Valentine’s Day Dance. St. John Cultural: Discussed the Fall Fest and Fr. Tobin’s Mass and reception. Planning their Vilija Dinner for December 7. Liturgy Report: During October the Rosary will be recited on Wednesday mornings in English and in the evening in Spanish. They also began discussion on the upcoming Christmas Schedule, the All Saints Mass, All Souls Mass. Plans will be announced about the Veteran’s day Mass. There will also be an Altar for the deceased in the breezeway. Evangelization: Maryann Jurcisin will now represent the Evangelization Committee on Parish Council. Members discussed that evangelization begins with each person. Bishop’s visits: On November 1the Bishop will celebrate the 4:00 Mass with us. On November 4th there is a closed meeting with the Bishop and Fr. Shori with the leadership of the Parish. The purpose of the meeting is to find out how to move forward with only using one worship site. Diocesan Assembly: Marcy and Joseph Sebest and Maryann Jurcisin will be our Parish Representatives at the assembly. Father said so far we only had 29 respond to the survery. Parish Socials: Not enough parishioners are going to the socials. They were change to once a month at 2 Masses. Some felt there are too many things going on at the same time. It was suggested to have representatives from Parish Council and Finance to hear concerns and answer questions from parishioners concerning the parish. Pastor’s Comments: Charlotte Davollio is handling the Face Book page for the parish. Father also announced that by signing up for Amazon Smile our church will get donations from Amazon when customers shop on Amazon. Other suggestions to keep parishioners informed were to have a Who’s Who in the bulletins to allow for parishioners to know who is on the committees. Marianne Pacak will lead the opening prayer at the next meeting.
