Dear Friends:
As we progress through the holy season of Advent, we can find reminders of the spirituality of Christmas even in what appear to be purely
secular trappings. The Christmas tree for example may derive its origin in part from pagan Germanic practices, as is sometimes noted. However, the famous “mystery plays” of the middle ages (the forerunners of modern drama) often depict the Tree of Paradise that became the instrument of Adam’s sin, as well as providing the wood for Christ’s Cross that became the means of our redemption. Thus, the Christmas tree represents not only the original Tree of Paradise but also the burning bush which spoke to Moses, the branch of Jesse from which Jesus was born,
the life-giving tree of the cross of Christ, and the tree which St. John the Apostle saw in the Book of Revelations whose leaves have medicine for
the people and which yields fruit each month for the healing of the nations. Because it is green year-round, the evergreen tree represents
hope.
Christmas candles and lights clearly are picking up the imagery of Christ’s words “I am the Light of the world”, and combining them
with the very human desire to provide guidance to the weary Holy Family in their travels. The candle in the window was the first “GPS”!
Tinsel are the thin, metallic strands that are used in Christmas decorations. A legend tells of a poor, faithful family who wished to decorate a
Christmas tree in honor of the Christ Child but who had no money for decorations. In the night, spiders came and spun webs across the tree.
Then the Christ Child, honoring the family's faith, turned the threads into silver. When we want to give our all to Christ, but we think that we
have nothing of value to give, God gives value to our offerings. God does not measure worth by worldly standards but by spiritual ones. Give
Christ your all and He will consider it more precious than gold.
Holly is an extremely hardy shrub that can be grown in all fifty states of the United States. The holly bush represents immortality, a
trait that God has given to each human being. We are all destined to live forever, either with the Lord or separated from Him. The sharptoothed edge of the holly leaf reminds Christians of the crown of thorns with which the soldiers mocked Our Lord during His Passion. They
laughingly hailed Him as king, never realizing that He is, indeed, King of the universe. As a Christmas symbol, the red holly berry represents
Christ's blood, shed for all people including those who reject Him.
Mistletoe is an aerial parasite that has no roots of its own. It lives off the tree to which it attaches itself and, without that tree, it
would die. Mistletoe is a Christmas symbol of our love which derives from and exists only because God loves us. God, Who is Love, created us
in love and caused us to be able to love. But if mistletoe were taken from the tree and any person removed from God’s love, both would die.
The candy cane is shaped like a shepherd's crook, reminding us that Jesus, the Good Shepherd, came into our world at Christmas. The
red stripe symbolizes Christ's sacrifice and the white background His purity. The candy cane reminds us of Isaiah's prophecy of the suffering
servant who was led like a lamb to the slaughter (Isaiah 53:7) and by his stripes you were healed (Isaiah 53:5). Candy canes have a peppermint
flavor, reminiscent of hyssop which had medicinal purposes (Psalm 51:9
And last bit not least, Santa Claus is a corruption of Saint Nicholas, fourth Bishop of Myra (located in modern Turkey) whose feast day
is December 6. He is also called Saint Nicholas of Bari after his relics were taken to Bari, Italy, in 1087. Saint Nicholas was very generous to the
poor, but most often anonymously. The most famous story concerns three young women whose destitute father was going to force them into
prostitution in order to survive. To prevent this heinous crime, Nicholas, on three different nights, anonymously went to their father's house
and threw a bag of gold though an open window. The bishop's miter and fur trimmed red winter garments were corrupted into Santa's outfit,
while Saint Nicholas's generosity was transferred to the "jolly old man" who delivers gifts anonymously on Christmas Eve.

del mundo, sino por los espirituales. Dé su Cristo todo y Él lo considerará más preciosa que el oro.
El acebo es un arbusto muy resistente que se puede cultivar en los cincuenta estados de los Estados Unidos. El arbusto de acebo representa la inmortalidad, un rasgo que Dios ha dado a cada ser humano. Todos estamos destinados a vivir para siempre, ya sea con el Señor o
separados de Él. El borde de dientes afilados de la hoja de acebo recuerda a los cristianos de la corona de espinas que los soldados se burlaban
de Nuestro Señor durante su Pasión. Ellos riendo le aclamaron como rey, sin darse cuenta de que Él es, en verdad, el Rey del universo. Como
símbolo de la Navidad, el rojo “Holly Berry” representa la sangre de Cristo, derramada por todas las personas, incluyendo a los que lo rechazan.

El muérdago es un parásito aérea que no tiene raíces propias. Vive fuera del árbol al que se atribuye a sí mismo y, sin ese
árbol, moriría. El muérdago es un símbolo de la Navidad de nuestro amor que se deriva de y sólo existe porque Dios nos ama. Dios,
que es Amor, nos ha creado por amor y causó que seamos capaces de amar. Pero si el muérdago se tomaron del árbol y cualquier persona retirado del amor de Dios, ambos morirían.El bastón de caramelo tiene la forma de un cayado de pastor, que nos recuerda que
Jesús, el Buen Pastor, vino a nuestro mundo en Navidad. La raya roja simboliza el sacrificio de Cristo y el fondo blanco Su pureza. El
bastón de caramelo nos recuerda la profecía de Isaías sobre el siervo sufriente que fue llevado como un cordero a la masacre (Isaías
53: 7), y por sus llagas fuimos sanados (Isaías 53: 5). Los bastones de caramelo tienen un sabor a menta, que recuerda de hisopo que
tenía fines medicinales (Salmo 51: 9
Y por último bit no menos, “Santa Claus” es una corrupción de San Nicolás, cuarto obispo de Myra (ubicado en la actual Turquía), cuya fiesta se diciembre 6. También se llama San Nicolás de Bari después de que sus reliquias fueron trasladadas a Bari, Italia, en
1087. San Nicolás era muy generoso con los pobres, pero más a menudo de forma anónima. La historia más famosa se refiere a tres
mujeres jóvenes cuyo padre indigente que estaba pasando para obligarlos a ejercer la prostitución para sobrevivir. Para evitar este
horrendo crimen, Nicholas, en tres noches diferentes, de forma anónima fue a la casa de su padre y lanzó una bolsa de oro a pesar de
una ventana abierta. Inglete y de piel recortada prendas de invierno rojos del obispo fueron corrompidos en traje de Santa Claus,

Week 4: Lighting of the Fourth Candle
Meditation: "Blest is she who trusted that the Lord's words to her would be fulfilled." (Luke 1:45)
In the Fourth Week of Advent, we consider Mary's trust in God's promise, her joy in His goodness to her. We ask, "Am I ready to
receive and celebrate the coming of the Son of God?" We have considered our relationships, our love of God and God's love for us,
and we have responded with an awakened concern for the needs of others. Now we may echo Mary's words: "My being proclaims
the greatness of the Lord. My spirit finds joy in God my Saviour." (Light all four candles)
Prayer: Almighty and loving God, soon the whole world will celebrate the birth of Your Son, Jesus. Even as we rejoice in our remembrance of His birth at Bethlehem, we find greater comfort in His promise to come again. May our preparations for this wondrous season remain with us, increase in us, and become as much a part of us as our breathing and our heartbeat. Then, may we say,
"Come, Lord Jesus, we are ready." Amen.

2014 GIVING TREE
Our 7th annual Giving Tree has begun to help those less fortunate than us. There are 3 trees decorated with tags that will benefit BRIDGE TO LIFE and some parish members from St. Margaret Mary who need our assistance.
These trees are located in the following areas: 1) in the narthex
of the upper church, 2) in the West Vestibule near the elevator
and 3) in the lower church.
We hope you are able to take a tag or more if possible and buy
the items listed. Please do not wrap the gift. Just tape the tag to
the bag or box so we can identify the item and where it is to go.
Please bring the gift by the end of December and give to an usher during Masses or bring to the Rectory for safe keeping. We all
know times are tough but for those of us lucky enough, a donation will aid someone during this time of year where it is better
to give than to receive. God bless you and your families for your
generosity.

Nuestra séptima edición de árbol de regalos ha comenzado para
ayudar a aquellos menos afortunados que nosotros. Hay 3 árboles decorado con etiquetas que beneficiarán al PUENTE A LA
VIDA y algunos miembros de la parroquia de Santa Margarita
María que necesitan nuestra ayuda.
Estos árboles se encuentran en las siguientes áreas: 1) en el nártex de la iglesia arriba, 2) en el vestíbulo oeste cerca del ascensor
y 3) en la iglesia de abajo.
Esperamos que tomen una etiqueta o más si es posible y puedan
comprar los artículos mencionados. Por favor, no envuelva los
