We already know the short form of possessive adjectives, now
we’re going to learn the long form of the adjectives and the
pronouns.
Ejemplos:
My books Their cousin -
mis libros
su primo
The long forms of the adjectives are:
My mío/a(s)
Your (fam.) tuyo/a (s)
His/her/your (form.) suyo/a (s)
our -
nuestro/a(s)*
their/your all -
suyo/a(s)
*notice nuestro is the same for short and long form adjectives.
They work like this:
Una amiga mía.
A friend of mine.
Unos papeles suyos. Some papers of his.
Una casa nuestra.
A house of ours.
The long form of the possessive adjective has to come BEHIND
the noun it’s modifying and IT HAS TO AGREE.
Práctica:
Some cats of ours.
Unos gatos nuestros.
The books of his.
Los libros suyos.
The friends of hers.
Los amigos suyos.
For the pronouns, it works a little differently:
Use the long form of the possessive adjective and the
appropriate article (el, la, los, las) for the noun you’re
referring to.
Ejemplos:
-- “Tus amigos son antipáticos.”
-- Your friends are mean.
-- “¿Y cómo son los tuyos?”
-- And what are yours like?
His (referring to books)
-
los suyos
(los libros)
Mine (referring to shirt)
-
la mía
(la camiseta)
Ours (referring to house) -

(la casa)
Theirs (referring to dogs) -

(los perros)
Práctica: Long form:
Our dog / the dog of ours
El perro nuestro
Their nephew / the nephew of theirs
El sobrino suyo
Your (fam.) girlfriend / the girlfriend of yours
La novia tuya
A friend of ours
Un amigo nuestro
Some toys of yours (fam.)
Unos juguetes tuyos
Pronouns:
Yours (fam.) (referring to jokes)
Los tuyos
Your alls (referring to jumprope)
La suya
Yours (form.) (referring to dolls)
Las suyas
Ours (referring to puppet)
