~Living God’s Word ~
Today Jesus boldly seems to reject his biological family in place of those who do
the will of God. In this passage Mark emphasizes how crucially important the
will and reign of God is for Jesus. To
identify those who do God’s will as having the same status as blood relations is a
powerful way to do this.

Life and Hope

When an unexpected loss occurs, hope is pulled like a rug from under one’s feet, and life comes to a screeching halt. The memories of the past come flashing before you like lightning, quickly disappearing until the next flash of
memory strikes again. Life and hope become intertwined, magically dancing the rhythm of life, along with a pervasive
cloud of fear appearing overhead, as one asks the question, “How do I go on?”
In today’s gospel, Luke gives us the scripture story of the widow feeling totally helpless as her only son is in
procession to his burial site. She had previously lost her husband, and now her son. She would be totally alone, and
abandoned as an outcast of society, essentially becoming destitute without someone to care for her. Was it her lucky
day that Jesus saw her and was moved with compassion as he told her not to cry as he touched the coffin? Luck had
nothing to do with it! Jesus is moved with compassion for the helpless and vulnerable widow. He restores Life to the
widow’s son by restoring his life, but God also restores our lives too. In Jesus, God revisits his people, and brings us
the gifts that only come from God, Life and hope even without our asking. Do we accept these gifts?
Jesus has come to gift us with Life and hope. We accept these gifts when we also offer these gifts to others.
We are also people of Life beyond this life. Our journey of faith is a dance of life and hope intertwined. We do not
need to ask what will enhance our life. Moreover, when our actions are affirming and support others, we truly become
the compassionate hands of Christ without being asked.

Cuando se produce una pérdida inesperada, la esperanza se estira como una alfombra de debajo de los pies de
uno, y la vida llega a un alto. Los recuerdos del pasado vienen a parpadear ante uno como un rayo, desapareciendo
rápidamente hasta la próxima destello de la memoria ataca de nuevo. La vida y la esperanza se enlaza, mágicamente a
bailar al ritmo de la vida, junto con una nube envolvente de temor que aparece encima de la cabeza, con la pregunta:
"¿Cómo seguiré?"
En el Evangelio de hoy, Lucas nos da el relato de las Escrituras de la viuda que se siente totalmente impotente
con su único hijo que está en procesión a su lugar de enterramiento. Había perdido previamente a su marido, y ahora
su hijo. Ella sería totalmente sola y abandonada como un marginado de la sociedad, fundamentalmente en la miseria
sin cuidados de nadie. ¿Era su día de suerte cuando Jesús la vio y tuvo compasión cuando le dijo que no lloraba cuando tocó el ataúd? La suerte no tuvo nada que ver con eso! Jesús se compadece de la viuda indefensa y vulnerable. Se
devuelve la vida a su único hijo, mediante la restauración de su vida, pero Dios también restaura nuestras vidas también. En Jesús, Dios vuelve a su pueblo, y nos trae los regalos que sólo vienen de Dios, La Vida y la esperanza, incluso
sin preguntas. ¿Aceptamos estos dones?
Jesús ha venido para regalar la vida y la esperanza. Aceptamos estos dones cuando también ofrecemos estos
dones a los demás. También somos personas de vida más allá de esta vida. Nuestro camino de fe es una danza de la
vida y la esperanza entrelazadas. No necesitamos preguntar qué va a mejorar nuestra vida. Por otra parte, cuando nuestras acciones, afirmando el apoyo a otros, realmente hacemos las manos de compasión de Cristo sin ser pedido.

Next weekend all parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Los
Angeles will be asked to give generously to support the Retirement Fund for Archdiocesan Priests. At each Mass on June
11th & 12th, a second collection will be taken to benefit this
important program.
