Dear Friend,
Every time a child has the support and encouragement he
needs, every time a young person dreams big and is motivated
to reach her goals, every time a Big and a Little form a friendship
that will last a lifetime, it’s the start of something big.
Mentoring - these small moments are the beginning of
significant, positive changes that put a child on the path to
success, creating better opportunities and brighter futures for
our young people. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin
Cities, we believe each child has the inherent ability to succeed,
and we work every day to help them unlock that potential.
In 2013, our agency continued to help young people succeed,
and we could not be more proud of our Littles, our Bigs, our
community partners, and what we have achieved together.
As we look forward to 2014 and beyond, we are laying the
foundation to grow our agency, increase the number of children
we serve, and improve the possibilities for our young people.
We are pleased to share with you the highlights of our
achievements over the last year, none of which would have been
possible without the continued generosity of our community.

MICHAEL AND RUMMON
Many of the most successful matches don’t have a dramatic story
arc. Instead, they are quiet, consistent relationships that emerge
as a Little grows into a stronger, more confident person with the
support of a caring adult. Small, everyday moments gradually
build trust and friendship between Bigs and Littles, and those
are the matches that can last for decades.
One of those matches is Michael and Rummon. Twelve-year-old
Rummon says his favorite thing about his Big Brother is that he’s
funny. “He says silly stuff all the time, just to make me laugh,”
he says with a smile. Rummon is shy and very quiet, and getting
him to come out of his shell isn’t easy. But Michael has a knack
for making his Little Brother smile.
Rummon has always been reserved, spending a lot of time
reading and playing video games. His father has been in and
out of prison for most of his life, and his mother, Karima, worried
that Rummon wouldn’t have a consistent, positive male role
model. “Rummon needed someone to build his confidence and
help him grow as a balanced young man,” she explains. When
she asked BBBS to find a mentor for her son, she was hoping for
someone like Michael.
Five years later, Michael and Rummon have explored so much
together, from rock climbing to sledding, board games to
basketball, computer games to pool. “We never argue and we
always have fun,” says Rummon.
It’s easy to see why Rummon looks up to Michael. He’s
successful, the Director of Packaging Engineering at General
Mills; he’s fun, constantly making Rummon giggle and always
encouraging him to try new things. And he’s obviously proud
of his Little Brother, even when he disguises his kind words as
friendly teasing. “We’ve been playing basketball together as
long as I’ve known him, and I never used to have
to try very hard to beat him, when he was seven.
But he beats me all the time, now!” he says.
But while they like to joke around, one thing
Michael and Rummon both take seriously is their
commitment to each other.

grow up, and he really is a great
young man.”

ERIN AND MAGALI
“Hermana!” That’s the first thing out of Erin’s mouth when she
sees her Little Sister, Magali. Sister. It’s the first word of every
postcard, text message, email, and phone call between the
two, and a reminder of nearly a decade of friendly teasing from
Magali’s Spanish-speaking family. And Magali, who is learning
French from her Big, fondly calls Erin “soeur.” In any language,
they’re sisters.
Their sisterhood was born nine years ago, when Erin visited
Magali’s house with a BBBS Match Coordinator to meet her Little
Sister for the first time. Magali can barely remember life before
her Big Sister, but for Erin, the memory of their first meeting is as
clear as ever. “We were standing in the living room, surrounded
by her mom and sisters, and there was a big jumble of Spanish
and English going on. And in the middle of the chaos was quiet
little Magali.”
Since then, Magali has blossomed. An outgoing high school
senior with a bubbly personality, Magali says she has gained
self-confidence just from knowing Erin believes in her. “She’s
always saying that she sees a lot of potential in me. That matters
more than anything else,” Magali says.
As a high school teacher, Erin has always stressed the
importance of a good education. Magali will soon become the
first person in her immediate family to graduate from high school
and go to college. “She makes it look easy but she has already
accomplished so much,” Erin says. “It’s really inspiring to watch
her life unfold.”
Over nine years of mentoring, the two have favorite memories
that showcase their “sisterhood”: trying to teach each other
Spanish and French, shopping for a homecoming dress, serious
conversations about the future, giggling over silly jokes.
And their friendship continues to grow. Both
hermanas say they can’t imagine a day when
they won’t be friends.

COMMUNITY-BASED MENTORING
One child. One adult. One life-changing connection. Communitybased mentoring represents the classic Big Brothers Big Sisters
relationship.
A BBBS Match Coordinator works with each child, volunteer, and
parent to ensure the health and safety of each match, regularly
checking in with a friendly hello, a word of advice or an upcoming
activity.
Littles come to BBBS from all corners of the community. Many are
facing adversity of some type, and like every child, they benefit
from having another stable, caring adult in their life.
As the Twin Cities community has changed, BBBS programs
have become even more responsive, accessible and effective.
Nearly 2,000 Littles are matched each year with Bigs who have
been carefully screened and interviewed, and who commit
to at least 12 months as a reliable friend and role model. Each
match is paired based on common interests and backgrounds,
complementary personalities, and the potential to form a strong
bond from the very start of their relationship.
Hmong Mentoring Initiative:
The Hmong community is an emerging cultural element of the
Twin Cities, but many Hmong youth face significant risk factors,
including a high teen birth rate and low high school graduation
rate. Increased recruitment and support for matches of Hmong
youth and mentors helps ensure success for every child.
Research shows that longer, stronger mentoring relationships have a greater positive impact on children.
Native American Mentoring Initiative:
For over a decade, BBBS has participated in a consortium of
mentoring organizations that serve Native American youth,
always seeking to identify mentors who can support these Littles
with a stable, caring adult relationship.
Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) partnership:
The NAZ initiative is working to end multigenerational poverty
within North Minneapolis, using education as a lever. As part of
this dynamic and innovative partnership, BBBS provided mentors
to 85 children in the neighborhood last year.

SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING
For some Bigs and Littles, time together doesn’t happen in
parks or museums or stadiums - it happens in school cafeterias
and playgrounds and gymnasiums. The BBBS School-based
program matches elementary-age Littles with Bigs and brings
them together for an hour each week during the school year to
eat lunch, play a board game, read a book, or just talk about
their week.
School-based mentoring is especially important for
children who might not otherwise be able to be Littles in the
Community-based program because of home schedules,
high mobility, or language differences. For these children,
schools are the ideal setting to maintain regular meetings with
a mentor who can support academic and social development.
Some School-based Bigs are high school students, so as they
give caring one-to-one support, they grow in confidence and
responsibility as well.
Fifteen partner schools with a high populations of children
facing adversity have a BBBS Match Coordinator on-site
each week to support Bigs and Littles with activity ideas,
supervision, and encouragement. And when school is out for
the summer, matches can keep in touch at BBBS field trips or
as pen pals.
BEYOND SCHOOL WALLS
Several local corporations have partnered with Big Brothers
Big Sisters to give back to the community by sharing their
employees’ time and life experience. The Littles - all students
at nearby schools - regularly visit corporate headquarters to
spend time one-on-one with an employee volunteer mentor.
In addition to providing mentors for children, corporations
like Carlson Companies, Comcast, and General Mills provide
their employees with a way to invest their time and energy in
a stronger future for the Twin Cities.

EDUCATION AND ENRICHMENT
By the time they’re high school seniors,
Littles are already significantly more likely
to graduate than their non-mentored peers.
They’re far more likely to have positive
relationships with their family and peers,
and less likely to have engaged in risky
behavior. But what comes next? How do
you get a good score on the ACT, choose
a college, or apply for scholarships? What
does it take to be a doctor, produce a hit
record, become an electrician, or start
your own business? How do the choices
you make as a teenager affect your life
down the road? And how can mentoring’s
positive outcomes become a launching
point into a successful adulthood?
The innovative Education & Enrichment
program at BBBS helps teens explore
options and find their own path to success
in school and career.
577 youth, ages 12-18, participated
in E&E programming in 2013.
College Access:
Many Littles will be the first in their families
to attend college. Individually-tailored
assistance from BBBS, including tours
to regional colleges, ACT preparation,
college application assistance, and
scholarship and financial aid guidance,
can help in navigating the process. And
thanks to the Annexstad Family Foundation,
current and former Little Brothers and Little
Sisters are eligible to apply for a renewable
scholarship to participating four-year
colleges. Since 2007, the Annexstad
Foundation has enabled 85 students from
our agency to attend college, including
nine new recipients in 2013.
Workforce Readiness:
Learning about a career path they’ve
never imagined can be the start of a
promising future for a young person.
At BBBS, ‘Workforce Readiness’ means
preparing our youth to enter the workforce,
whether they attend a certificate program,
community
college,
or
four-year
university. Youth visit local technical and
trade schools, receive individual career
counseling, and tour the offices of local
businesses like The Nerdery, Hennepin
Theater Trust, and American Dairy Queen
International. This program helps young
people plan their own path to success
while also ensuring a strong future
workforce for the Twin Cities.
CORE:
The CORE program (Confidence,
Opportunities, Relationships, Education)
offers teen pregnancy prevention
programs focused on adult-youth
communication and leadership and
life skills for youth. CORE helps Littles
and their parents/guardians and Bigs
communicate and make healthy decisions
about sex, relationships, and future plans.
Workshops, leadership trainings, and
discussion groups are held in partnership
with community resources like Teenwise,
The Links, Inc., and Planned Parenthood.

SPOTLIGHT ACTIVITIES
SPORTS BUDDIES
BIKES FOR KIDS
Thanks to the generosity of the Scott Richards North
Star Charitable Foundation, 180 Little Brothers and Little
Sisters unwrapped a special holiday gift a few weeks
early. They attended a holiday party at the Metrodome
in December along with their parents and Bigs, BBBS
staffers, and a Minnesota Vikings player. After an
evening of football, arts and crafts, hot dogs, and
games, there was a special surprise for every Little - a
brand new bicycle!
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM
The Minnesota Children’s Museum and PwC teamed
up to give our matches and families a special treat - a
free night at the museum, exclusively for BBBS! Littles,
Bigs, and Littles’ families got to meet other matches,
enjoy snacks, and, best of all, explore and play in the
Children’s Museum.
Picture Perfect
Mentoring Children of Prisoners
Children with incarcerated parents are significantly
more likely to someday become involved in the justice
system themselves. A caring Big Brother or Big Sister
provides the kind of stability and support that helps a
child stay on the right track. Thanks in part to funding
from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, 556
children with familial histories of incarceration now
have mentors and a better chance at interrupting the
cycle of incarceration.
A digital photography class, funded by the
Best Buy Children’s Foundation, gave Littles
and their Bigs an opportunity to learn about
the art and technology of photography. Each
Little received a new digital camera, and a
professional photographer taught matches how
to use the camera, capture powerful images
from their daily lives, and edit their pictures.
Several of the photographs were showcased
and auctioned at the BBBS gala.
Most of the children on our waiting list are boys, and
they sometimes wait a year or more to be matched
with a male mentor. The newest mentoring program,
Sports Buddies, invites Bigs to use athletics as the
foundation of a mentoring relationship. Bonding
over sports teaches Littles the value of teamwork,
dedication and good sportsmanship. Matches often
attend professional games or play a sport together, as
well as attend regular BBBS outings.
BIG DAY AT THE U
School-based matches typically meet at the Littles’ school,
but one day last spring, several Bigs who are U of M students
took their Littles to visit their campus, instead. Littles got to
experience life as a U of M student as they toured Coffman
Student Center, built rocket ships with a physics professor
and did experiments with chemistry students.

During the 2013 fiscal year, the board and leadership
made the decision to adjust our agency size to
match our revenue. In recent years, our organization
has lost funding from the federal government,
United Way, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
These losses are a result of a shift in resources and
focuses, and not a ref lection of our performance or
impact. We continue to work to secure new funding
sources. The solid financial model for fiscal year
2014 and beyond allows us to retain the high quality
of our mentoring services and positions us for
future growth.
