Starting Off the School Year on the Right Foot

It’s the first day of school. You’ve sent the
kids off with their backpacks and school
supplies, met their new teachers and said hello
to friends you haven’t seen all summer. Now,
get out the calendar and start planning: there’s
not all that much time to reach those academic
and community-building goals you set for your
school last spring.
Important elements to a successful school year
include: implementing the Academic Plan
formulated by your Site Council the previous
spring, engaging parents and community
members to involve them in the academic and
social life of school, devising ways to raise
additional funds to supplement your school
budget, and developing a marketing plan to let
San Francisco families know what a unique
and special place your school is. Each of these
activities requires time, focus and lots of
helping hands.
Implementing your annual Academic Plan is a
major effort each year, and requires a School
Site Council that is engaged and representative
of your school community. Many parents are
only dimly aware of the Academic Plan, but
taking part in shaping it is a way to have a
voice at your school.
Lilly Kim Murphy, parent Arts Coordinator at
Alamo Elementary (and a PPS-SF Board
member), points out that there is now more
arts funding available than ever before, thanks
to Proposition H, which provided City funds
to public schools for sports, libraries, arts and
music, so parents need to get involved in those
spending decisions. To train parents on being
involved in School Site Council decisions, a

Interested in Serving on a Site Council?
We’ve Got Training for You!
Parent volunteers have been working with the school district
over the summer to develop a School Site Council leadership
training program for parents. Parents representing a broad crosssection of San Francisco public schools attended meetings on
such topics as “Meeting Management, Elections and Bylaws,”
and “California Standards/Review of Academic Performance,”
to develop a curriculum for the training, which will be offered to
parents at the fall Parent Convention (Sept. 29) and at the
School Site Council Summit in January.
We’re Launching Our New Web Site!
Last spring, PPS-SF announced that it had begun work on a new
Web site with the help of a service grant from the Taproot
Foundation. Launching this month with the help of a crack team
of Taproot volunteers, the new site has a cleaner design and a
user-friendly interface and organization.
This new design and organization will allow us to provide much
better and fresher information than on our previous web site.
Prospective public school parents will be able to visit our site to
learn more about the enrollment process and about the
wonderful things going on in our schools, and parents of current
students will be able to get ideas about how to be involved and
become effective leaders at their schools.

“It's been great that the number of parents coming to the
planning meetings has grown exponentially. I think this is a
good sign that we are at a tipping point for parent leadership and
a broad base of people are willing to step up to the plate to get
involved with planning and monitoring success at their schools,"
said Deena Zacharin, head of Parent Relations for the school
district and a parent of a child at James Lick Middle School.
Kathleen Cameron, a parent at Argonne Elementary and
Presidio Middle School, is participating because she has served
on a site council for a number of years and is interested in
learning about best practices at other schools.
“I’m hoping that the training will allow parents to understand
the role of the SSC in their school and how to participate. The
SSC should not be a mystery nor should it be viewed as an elite
club,” said Ms. Cameron.

and parent of an incoming School Of The Arts 9th grader
My daughter and I just went through the high school search last
year. We looked at seven public schools, and though it was timeconsuming, I actually enjoyed learning about all the schools.
Below is the to-do list I followed for our high school search.
Being organized and putting it all in a spreadsheet was very
helpful. Unfortunately, most of the time required occurs during
the most important grading period if your child is applying to
Lowell or private schools. For Lowell, academic grades during
the first semester of the 8th grade count toward one-third of the
admissions criteria. (All 7th grade academic grades are another
third, and 7th grade standardized test scores count for the rest.)
September – Early Oct.: Gathered a list of high schools that I
thought would be candidates. In late September, I called all the
schools to get a list of open houses and shadow times. This was
not easy: many of the schools hadn’t yet scheduled their open
houses, and it was difficult to get someone on the phone.
Oct. – Dec.: Attended Open Houses and went on shadow visits.
Call as early as possible to set up a shadow visit, or informally
arrange for your child to shadow an acquaintance. The shadow
visits were very influential for my daughter, but you must take
your child out of school for a half-day or more to shadow.

School food in San Francisco is much better and healthier than it
used to be, thanks to the district Wellness Policy and strong new
leadership in the school district’s Student Nutrition Services
(SNS) department.
Shadow visits are required for most private schools.
Jan: Submit your SFUSD application by Jan. 11 unless you are
applying to Lowell (see below).
SOTA: If you apply to School of the Arts your child will need
to prepare a portfolio or an audition. Auditions happen in
January but you must apply in December to get an audition date.
Portfolios are due in December.
Charter Schools: You need to submit a separate application and
sometimes an essay, so check with each school individually.
Lowell: A separate Lowell application must be submitted by
December 7th along with your SFUSD application. Students
coming from private school will have to take the CAT6 offered
by Lowell in January. If your child does not make the official
grade/test score cutoff, other assets are reviewed by a committee
at your child's middle school. This committee will look at
achievements in sports or arts, or at unique hardships to make a
case for a Lowell acceptance. Gather all of the supporting
material for the committee before the December 7th deadline
and be as detailed as possible in your application.

parents feel useful without using them up. The PTA at
Lafayette Elementary started “Stop, Drop and GO,” a drop-off
service where a rotating group of parent volunteers help safely
unload children from cars each morning.
“Since we started the program in February, more than 60
families use it daily,” wrote Lafayette PTA President Stephanie
Lebeau in an email. “This is a perfect example of all of us
coming together for the greater good of our children.”
Lafayette’s program is promoted to prospective volunteers as
“the shortest period of time but the biggest contribution you can
make to our school,” and parents agree it is a nice way for those
working full-time to contribute.
Reaching out to other families at your school isn’t just about
asking them to pitch in – it’s about building community and
helping everyone feel invested and involved. At McKinley
Elementary, four or five parents organize a “welcome back”
barbeque the weekend before school starts each year. The PTA
picks up most of the food costs – about $300 – and families are
encouraged to bring side dishes. Invitations are mailed home
and promoted on the school’s email list and Web site.
“This event is entirely social. We want to welcome our families
to build a sense of community,” said Tim Lennon, one of the
parent organizers. PPS-SF staffer Vicki Symonds, a longtime
SF-PTA member and a School of the Arts (SOTA) and Aptos
Middle School parent, agrees. “Don’t get caught in the
fundraising trap,” she advises. “For every fundraising event,
have several community events.”

Try to translate as many important communications as you can
into the primary languages of your parent community.
Translation does wonders in making non-English speaking
parents feel welcome and involved.
Finally, there is fundraising -- there are almost as many ways to
raise funds as there are ways to spend them, but do so in a way
that is inclusive. Many parents cannot simply write a check, so
be creative. Writing grants for a specific need can be effective:

example. Also, be realistic. “Don't take on more than what your
community can support. If there is no one to run the Scholastic
Book Fair, then don't do it and cut back your expenses,” advises
Ms. Symonds.
Finally, fall is tour time for families transitioning to new
schools, so give some thought to marketing. Many schools do
parent-led tours, or an open house during evenings or weekends.
Plan for a few parents to attend the Enrollment Fair (scheduled
this year for Oct. 27) to talk to families looking for a school:
other parents are always the most trusted source of information
about schools. Creating a handout highlighting programs at your
school is another good way to stand out. There are also a
number of good free or low-cost ways to create a school web
site to let parents know about your school. Sutro Elementary is
reaching out to current and prospective parents through its
Kindergarten blog, which publishes updates about what is
happening in the school’s Kindergarten classrooms.

Involve Parents
At some schools, a volunteer coordinator focuses on recruiting
parent volunteers throughout the year. Other schools set up a
“volunteers needed” area of their newsletter, or post volunteer
opportunities at school. Email lists (which can be set up in minutes
using Yahoo! or other free services) are another good way to
broadcast information to parents. PPS-SF has also begun its “Next
Steps” Parent Leadership training program in English, Spanish and
Chinese to help parents learn how to be involved at their schools.
Develop a Fundraising Plan
First, assess your needs: how much do you need to raise to fill
holes this year (like paying for classroom supplies or replacing
books in your library collection)? What’s on your wish list? Once
you know what you need and what you want, try to develop a mix
of activities – direct appeals work great for some families but others
feel more comfortable selling merchandise or soliciting donations
for an auction. Look into available grants – opportunities are often
published in the weekly PPS National Clearninghouse newsletter.

a sus chicos con sus mochilas y sus útiles
escolares, ha conocido a sus nuevos profesores

La Cruda Verdad Acerca de los Almuerzos

La comida escolar en San Francisco es mucho mejor y más
saludable de lo que solía ser gracias a las Políticas de Bienestar y a
un nuevo liderazgo en el departamento de Servicios de Nutrición
para los Estudiantes (SNS) del distrito escolar.
Aún quedan cosas por mejorar. Algunas personas critican y se
quejan de que nuestra comida no es preparada desde cero, de que no
se utilizan ingredientes cultivados localmente o que sean frescos y
orgánicos, o que las posibilidades son limitadas, o que las porciones
son muy pequeñas para los adolescentes con grandes apetitos.
Todas las personas involucradas en el programa de nutrición están
de acuerdo en que las comidas cocinadas y con ingredientes
orgánicos frescos y cultivados en la localidad son lo ideal, pero
debemos enfrentarnos a la dura realidad. Muchas escuelas no
disponen de cocinas de trabajo, los artículos orgánicos cuestan más
y la producción de cultivos locales no llega a las cantidades que
necesitamos. Y más importante aún, nuestro presupuesto cuenta con
menos de un dólar para la actual ración de comida.
Las comidas escolares son financiadas por dos fuentes: los pagos en
efectivo realizados por los estudiantes que pagan el precio total y
los reembolsos del gobierno estatal y federal para comidas gratuitas
o de precio reducido que se sirven a los estudiantes de bajos
ingresos. Aquellas tarifas de desembolso ya son increíblemente
bajas – alrededor de $2.50 por comida. Calificar a una mayor
cantidad de estudiantes incrementaría los ingresos, ya que los
estudiantes que no pueden pagar nunca son rechazados o no se les
da una “comida vergonzosa” más barata en caso de que estén en
otros distritos. Pero aún así, el umbral para calificar para un
almuerzo gratuito o de bajo precio es cruelmente poco realista para
una San Francisco tan cara.

Después de gastos, queda muy poco para gastar en la comida actual

maneras de aumentar dicha cantidad, pero actualmente acarrea un
déficit anual. Y cuando el presupuesto del SNS no cuadra, el déficit
sale de otros recursos escolares. Todos tienen interés en asegurarse
de que la Nutrición Estudiantil esté en buena forma
financieramente.
Aun cuando usted sepa que su familia no califica, debería llenar una
solicitud para almuerzos gratuitos o de precios reducidos. Algunos
estudiantes que podrían calificar no presentan una solicitud porque
no quieren que los demás sepan que es pobre. Si todos los
estudiantes presentan un formulario, este estigma desaparecería. Y
a pesar de que el umbral para ser calificado es muy bajo, algunas
familias (particularmente aquellas cuyos ingresos han cambiado
recientemente) todavía están sorprendidos de saber que tienen
derecho a comidas gratuitas o a menor precio. Cuando todos los

Primaria Lafayette inició un servicio de ayuda denominado
“Pare, Deje y VAYA,” en el cual un grupo de padres de
familia voluntarios se turnan cada mañana para bajar a los
niños de los vehículos de manera segura.
“Desde que iniciamos el programa en el mes de febrero más de
60 familias lo utilizan a diario,” nos escribió por correo
electrónico la Presidenta del PTA de la Escuela Primaria
Lafayette, Stephanie Lebeau. “Este es el perfecto ejemplo de
cómo todos nosotros podemos trabajar juntos por el bien de
nuestros hijos.”
El programa de la Escuela Primaria Lafayette es
promocionado a los potenciales voluntarios como “el periodo
más corto de tiempo pero la mayor contribución que usted
puede hacer por nuestra escuela,” y los padres están de
acuerdo en que es una buena manera de contribuir para
aquellos que trabajan a tiempo completo.
Extender la mano a otras familias de su escuela no es
solamente pedirles que ayuden – es más bien afianzar a la
comunidad y ayudar a que todos se sientan involucrados. En la
Escuela Primaria McKinley, cuatro de cada cinco padres de
familia organizan una parrillada de “bienvenidos de vuelta” el
fin de semana antes de iniciarse cada año. El PTA paga la
mayoría de los costos de comida – alrededor de $300 – y se les
pide a las familias que traigan platos adicionales. Las
invitaciones son enviadas por correo a cada hogar y son

anunciadas en la lista de correo electrónico y en el sitio Web de
la escuela.
“Este evento es enteramente de carácter social. Queremos dar la
bienvenida a nuestras familias por cimentar un sentido de
comunidad,” dice Tim Lennon, uno de los padres de familia
organizadores. La funcionaria del PPS-SF, Vicki Symonds,

que ser realistas. “No hagan más de lo que la comunidad puede
soportar. Si no hay nadie que haga funcionar la Feria Escolar del
Libro, entonces no la realicen y ahorren en gastos,” nos aconseja
la Sra. Symonds.
Por último, el otoño es tiempo de recorrido de las familias que
están en transición hacia nuevas escuelas, así que déle un poco
de tiempo para idear alguna publicidad. Muchas escuelas hacen
recorridos de orientación para los padres, o una reunión abierta
en las tardes o en los fines de semana. Planifique para que unos
cuantos padres de familia asistan a la Feria de Matriculación
(programada este año para el 27 de octubre) con el fin de que

¿Está Buscando una Escuela Secundaria?
Comience por aquí.

experta en la búsqueda de una escuela secundaria y madre de un
estudiante que está por entrar a la Escuela de Artes.
Mi hija y yo iniciamos la búsqueda de una escuela secundaria el
año pasado. Consideramos siete escuelas públicas y aunque nos
tomó mucho tiempo realmente disfruté lo que aprendí acerca de
estas escuelas. Más adelante se encuentra la lista de cosas que
tuve que hacer y que me sirvieron de guía para la búsqueda de
una escuela secundaria. Fue muy útil organizarse y poner todo en
una hoja de cálculo. Desafortunadamente, gran parte del tiempo
requerido coincide con el periodo de calificaciones más
importante, en el caso de estar postulando a la Escuela Lowell o a
otras escuelas privadas. Para la Lowell, las calificaciones
académicas del primer semestre del 8avo grado cuentan como un
tercio del criterio de admisión. (Todas las calificaciones
académicas del 7mo grado cuentan como otro tercio, y los puntajes
de las pruebas estándares del 7mo año cuentan por el tercio
restante.)
Septiembre – Comienzos de Octubre: Recolectamos una lista
de escuelas secundarias que pensamos podrían ser las candidatas.
A fines de septiembre, llamé a todas las escuelas para conseguir

tuvieron mucha influencia sobre mi hija, pero usted debe sacar
a sus hijos de la escuela durante medio día o más para una
visita de “investigación”. Muchas escuelas privadas exigen la
realización de visitas de “investigación”.
Ene: Presente su solicitud de ingreso al SFUSD alrededor del
11 de enero, a menos que usted postulando a la Escuela
Lowell (ver más adelante).

SOTA: Si usted está postulando a la Escuela de Artes, su

Escuelas Exentas: Usted tiene que presentar una postulación
separada y algunas veces un ensayo, así que revise cada
escuela individualmente.
PADRES DE LAS ESCUELAS PÚBLICAS DE SAN FRANCISCO
Lowell: Se debe presentar una solicitud separada para Lowell
hasta el 7 de diciembre junto con su solicitud para el SFUSD.
Los estudiantes que vienen de escuelas privadas tendrán que
tomar el CAT6 ofrecido por Lowell en enero. Si su hijo(a) no
tiene las calificaciones oficiales y/o los puntajes de las pruebas,
un comité revisará otros recursos en la escuela secundaria de su
hijo. Este comité se fijará en sus logros deportivos o artísticos, o
en los esfuerzos únicos que haya realizado para lograr la
aceptación por parte de la Escuela Lowell. Recolecte todo el
material de apoyo para presentarlo al comité antes de la fecha
límite del 7 de diciembre y sea lo más detallado posible en su
solicitud.
Iniciando el Año Escolar con el Pie Derecho
Primaria Sutro está llegando a los padres de familia actuales y
potenciales a través de su blog de Kindergarten, en que se
publican actualizaciones sobre lo que está pasando en las salas
de clase de kindergarten de la escuela.

Involucrar a los Padres de Familia
En algunas escuelas, un coordinador voluntario se concentra en
reclutar padres de familia voluntarios a lo largo de todo el año.
Otras escuelas establecen un área de “voluntarios requeridos” en
su boletín de noticias, o dan oportunidades de post-voluntariado en
la escuela. Las listas de correo electrónico (que pueden
organizarse en unos cuantos minutos utilizando Yahoo u otros
servicios gratuitos) son otra buena manera de transmitir
información a los padres de familia. El PPS-SF también ha
iniciando un programa de entrenamiento de Liderazgo para Padres
de Familia, “Próximos Pasos”, en idioma inglés, español y chino
con el fin de ayudar a los padres a que aprendan a participar en
sus escuelas.
Elaborar un Plan de Recolección de Fondos
Primero que nada, evalúe sus necesidades: ¿cuánto necesita
usted aumentar los ingresos para llenar vacíos este año (tales
como el pago de suministros para la sala de clases o el reemplazo
de libros en su biblioteca)? ¿Qué hay en su lista de aspiraciones?
Una vez que usted sepa qué es lo que necesita y qué es lo que
busca, trate de elaborar un conjunto de actividades – los
llamamientos directos funcionan muy bien para algunas familias,
pero otras se sienten más cómodas vendiendo mercaderías o
solicitando donaciones para una subasta. Busque concesiones
disponibles – a menudo se encuentran oportunidades publicadas
en el boletín de noticias semanal del National Clearninghouse del
PPS.

開學的第一天，你把提著背包和學習用品
的孩子送到學校去，碰見了他們的新老師
，又與你整個暑假都沒有見面的朋友打過
了招呼。現在，讓我們把日曆拿出來，開
始計劃一下：要達到春季時你們為你們的
學校定下的學術及社區建設目標，時候無
多了。
工作，並且需要一個既投入又能代表校區
的校政委員會。很多家長對學術計劃不大
了了，但參與製訂計劃的過程，就是向你
的學校發表意見的一個方法。
一個成功的學年，包括了以下的重要因
素：執行春季時你的校政委員會定下的學
術計劃；鼓勵家長及社區成員參與學校的
學術及社交生活；想辦法籌募更多資金以
彌補學校預算的不足；以及制訂一套推廣
計劃，使三藩市的家庭知道你的學校與別
不同。這些活動的每一項，都需要時間、
集中注意力和大量的人手。
Alamo 小學的家長兼美術協調主任 (亦是
PPS-SF 董事會成員 ) 莉莉 (Lilly Kim
Murphy) 曾指出，很感謝 H 提案將市府資
金撥給公立學校作體育、圖書館、美術及
音業方面的用途，使目前在美術方面可以
動用的資金，比前任何時期更多；因此，
家長需要參與制定有關支銷方面的決策。
為了訓練家長參與校政委員會的決策，一
個由家長組成的委員會在暑假時曾與 PPS
及校區合作，策劃一個有趣的訓練課程。
該訓練的首部份，將會在 9 月 29 日家長大
會 (Parent Convention) 內推出，而其餘部
份，則會在一月的校政委員會高峰會上推

家長義工在暑假期間與校區合力發展了一個為家長而設的
校政委員會領袖訓練項目。代表了三藩市各公立學校的家
長舉行會議，討論議題包括：「主持會議，選舉和組織章
程」與「加州學術標準/學術表現檢評」，然後發展了一套
訓練的課程。該課程將會在秋天的家長大會 (Parent
Convention 9 月 29 日) 及在一月的校政委員會高峰會上向家
長提供。
匈娜 (Deena Zacharin) 是校區的家長聯絡負責人，亦是 James
Lick 中學一位學生的家長，她曾這樣說：「參加籌備會議的
家長，在人數方面節節上升，實在令人振奮。我認為這是
一個好現像。我們家長的領導已到了一個轉捩點，更多的

在春季時 PPS-SF 曾宣佈取得特絡 (Taproot) 基金服務資

三藩市學校的食物比前更好和健康，這得要向校區的康健
政策及校區學生營養服務 (SNS) 部門新上任而又強大的領
導班子表示謝意。
但是，某些情況仍有待改善。有些人投訴認為學校的食物
並非採用當地出產的或有機種植的新鮮產品作為基本材料
來烹調；或認為選擇有限；又或認為對胃口特大的青年來
說，份量不足。
每一位參與營養項目的人都會同意，以當地出產的或有機
種植的新鮮產品作為基本材料烹調的膳食最為理想，但我
們面對是冷酷的現實。大部份學校沒有可煮食的廚房，有
機的農產品售價較高，而當地種植的產品又供不應求。最
重要的，就是我們花在食物上的預算，不能超過一元
不能超過一元。
不能超過一元
學校膳食由兩個資金來源支持：付全費學生交來的現金，
和由州及聯邦政府因供應免費或減費膳食給低收入學生而
撥出的津貼。那些津貼數目已是難得的低---大概每餐 2.5
元。愈多學生符合資格減免，收入便會增加，因為付不起
錢的學生永遠不會像其他校區一樣被拒，或供應較便宜的
「丟臉的膳食」。但是，即使如此，對高消費的三藩市來
說，免費或減費午餐所要求的資格，是殘酷地不切實際。
跟著談談費用方面，特別是人力上的費用。除掉支出，剩
餘下來可以真正用在食物上的便所餘無幾---大概每餐 97
仙。減除了盤子、具、及牛奶和水果，就祗剩餘
47 仙花在
主菜上。SNS 正在不斷尋求方法，去增加該數目，但目前
每年仍以赤字經營。而當 SNS 預算不平衡時，不足之數便
要由其他學校資源填補。人人都希望「學生營養服務」能
自給自足。
即使你知道你的家庭不會符合資格，你仍應該填寫一份免
費或減費午餐的申請表格。有些可能合資格的學生不肯遞
交申請，是為了不想別人知道他家裡貧窮。假如每個學生
都提出了申請，這污名便不會存在。而且，雖然資格提得
很高，有些家庭 (特別是那些最近在收入方面有變動的家
庭) 會因為他們符合享用免費或減費午餐資格而感到驚喜。
當所有低收入家庭的兒童都符合了資格，他們的營養就會
得到改善，而且對學校亦有幫助，因為他們能享用較便宜
午餐便會替該膳食項目帶來更多的收入。最後，該表格只
會用來決定是否合資格；它不會被用來決定申請人是否合
法美國居民。
我和我的女兒剛在過去一年經過了選找中學的歷程。我們曾
經參看了七間公立中學，雖然花了很多時間，但我實在很高
興能認識所有學校。以下是一張我在選找中學過程中採用的
清單。我發覺有系統地去做和把所有的資料排列在一張數據
表上，會有很大的幫助。很可惜，假如你的子女是申請入讀
Lowell 或私立學校的話。大部份的時間就會花在那最重要的
計分時段。對 Lowell 來說，八年級第一個學期的學科成績
將佔入學條件要求的三分之一。 (所有七年級的學科成績佔
另一個三分之一，而餘下的三分之一則是七年級的標準試成
績) 。
九月至十月初：我收集了一張我認為值得考慮的中學的名

女兒停學半天去參加。大部份的私立學校都有伴隨學生的要
求。
一月：除非你想申請入讀
Lowell，否則便要在 1 月 11 日前
一月：除非
遞交三藩市聯合校區 (SFUSD) 申請表 (請參看下文)
SOTA：
：假如你申請入讀 School of the Arts，你的子女便需
準備一份學術檔案或面試材料。面試通常會在一月進行，但
你必須在十二月申請，並約定面試日期。學術檔案則須在十
二月遞交。
特許學校
：你必須遞交一份獨立申請，有
特許學校 (Charter Schools)：
時要附加一篇文章。故此要先弄清楚個別學校不同的要求。
Lowell ：一份 Lowell 的申請表，需要與三藩市合校區
(SFUSD) 的申請表在 12 月 7 日前同時遞交。從私立學校轉
校的學生，需要參加 Lowell 在一月份舉行的 CAT6 考試。
若未能取得合格成績，便需要由你子女的初中學校的一個委
員會去檢視其他有利條件。該委員會將會考慮在體育或藝術
方面的成就，或特殊困境，以提供更多資料看是否能獲得
Lowell 錄取。請在 12 月 7 日限期前將所有的有利資料收集
好並交給委員會，而且，在申請表上提供的資料，愈是詳細
則愈佳。

工作) 使招募人手變成一項挑戰。

其中一個答案，就是使家
長感到有用但又不致被用
盡。Lafayette 小學的家長
會開創「停車，放下，離
開」的做法。這是一項接
學生離開校車的服務，每
天早上由一群家長義工輪
班協助學生從校車上安全
地下車。
Lafayette 家長會主席史芬尼 (Stephanie Lebeau) 在電郵中曾
寫道：「自從我們在二月份開始該項服務，每天便有超過
六十個家庭使用。這是個完美的例子，去表明我們所有人
團結一致，為使子女得到最大的益處。」
在向有意當義工的人士推廣 Lafayette 這項目時，它被稱為
「以最短的時間而能對你的學校作出最大的貢獻」的項
目。家長們亦同意，這是一個全職工作家長作出貢獻的一
個好方法。
把接觸面伸展到學校的其他家長，並不是單指要求他們成
為義工，而是要建立一個社區及使每一個人都感到自己是
其中的一份子。在 McKinley 小學校內，四、五位家長於
每年開學前的周末，組織「歡迎回校」的野外燒烤活動。
大部份的食物支銷---約 300 元---由家長會負擔，而亦鼓勵
參加的家庭帶一些副食。邀請信都發到個別家中，且會通
過學校的電郵名單及網址廣為宣傳。
據其中一位協助籌備的家長阿添 (Tim Lennon) 指出：「該
項活動全屬社交性。我們要歡迎我們的家庭，從以建立對
社區的歸屬感。」 PPS-SF 的職員維姬 (Vicki Symonds) ，
亦是三藩市家長會的長期會員及 School of the Arts (SOTA)
及 Aptos 中學的學生家長，亦表同意。她的忠告是：「不
要太沉迷於籌募資金。每舉辦一次籌款項目，就要舉辦數
次社區項目。」
且讓我們嘗試盡量把重要的通訊翻譯成家長們的母語。翻
譯可有效地使不說英語的家長感到受歡迎和消息靈通。

最後一提的就是籌募資金-- 籌款的方式，就像花費的方式
一樣多。但請採用一個全包的方式。很多家長連發一張支
票也不懂。因此籌募方式必須要有創造性。為某一個確切
的需要而寫一份資助申請書，會是一個有效的方法： L.R.
Flynn 為一個新的遊樂場而寫了一份成功的申請書便是一個
例子。此外，亦要踏實。茜蒙女士 (Ms. Symonds) 的忠告
是：「不要要求你的社區給你力不能及的支持。假如找不
到人手去辦一個學術書籍的展覽會，就把它放棄和將支出
預算收縮。」
最後，秋天是某些家庭替子女轉讀新校的季節，所以請你
們花點時間去計劃一些推廣的工作。很多學校會安排家長
帶領的參觀，或在黃昏或周末舉辦開放日。請計劃安排幾
位家長參加收生展覽會 (Enrollment Fair ) (今年已定在 10 月
27 日舉行)，以便與其他正在選找學校的家長傾談：別的家
長通常被看作是有關學校資料最可靠的來源。編印一份有
關你學校的特點的單張，是一個好的方法去突出自己。此
外，尚有一些免費或價廉的方式去創設學校的網站，向家
長們介紹你的學校。Sutro 小學就正在通過它的幼稚園網誌
去接觸目前及未來學生的家長，並發佈有關該校幼稚園班
房裡活動的最新消息。

鼓勵家長參與
在某些學校裡，義工協調人會全年致力招募家長義工。其
他學校則會在他們的通訊闢出「需要義工」專欄，或在校
內張貼義工服務機會資訊。使用電郵名單 [若採用雅虎
(Yahoo) 或其他免費服務，幾分鐘就可裝妥] 是另一個把資訊
通知家長的好方法。PPS-SF 的家長領袖訓練，亦開始了
「下一步」，分別以英語、西班牙語和中文去幫助家長學
習怎樣參與學校的事務。
推展籌募資金計劃
首先要估計你的需要：今年需要籌募多少才可以彌補不足
之數(例如要購買課堂設備，或替補圖書館的藏書)？你的購
物清單上列了些甚麼？一旦弄清楚了你的需要，便要開始
一系列的活動---對有些家庭來說，直接的呼籲很有效，但
有些家庭則喜歡以賣物或拍賣捐贈物品方式去籌募。請留
