TOWARD A GREENER AND HEALTHIER WORLD
Imagine hospitals around the world deploying onsite renewable energy and super-efficient
building design.
Imagine cancer centers built without chemicals that cause cancer.
Imagine health centers that provide clean water and healthy food for their communities.
Imagine hospitals that minimize waste generation and practice water recycling.
Imagine the health sector as a beacon of and advocate for low-carbon development.
Imagine Global Green and Healthy Hospitals.
3
THE PROBLEM
Climate change, chemical contamination, water and air pollution are all exacerbating diseases
the world over. These environmental health problems are increasing the pressure on, and
eroding the capacity of, already thinly-stretched health care systems.
The health sector itself is paradoxically contributing to these very environmental health
problems, even as it attempts to address their downstream impacts. Through the products and
technologies it deploys, the resources it consumes, the waste it generates and the buildings it
constructs and operates, the health sector is a significant source of pollution around the world,
and therefore an unintentional contributor to trends that undermine public health.
44
THE SOLUTION
There is a growing convergence of solutions that foster both public health and environmental
sustainability, pointing the way toward a sustainable, healthier future.
Nurses, doctors, hospitals, health systems and ministries of health are increasingly at the
center of these solutions— playing leadership roles in transforming their own institutions and
becoming advocates for policies and practices that promote public environmental health, while
often saving scarce financial resources.
5
AGENDA
The Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Agenda provides a comprehensive framework for
hospitals and health systems everywhere in the world to achieve greater sustainability and to
contribute to improved public and environmental health.
The Agenda consists of ten interconnected goals. Each contains a series of Action Items,
as well as links to tools and resources that hospitals and health systems can use to support
implementation.
The Agenda is currently available in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese at

THE NETWORK
Hospitals, health systems and health organizations representing the interests of more than
4,000 hospitals from six continents came together over the course of 2012 to form a global
network based on the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Agenda.
The Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Network (GGHH) is a community for institutions in
the health sector dedicated to reducing their ecological footprint and promoting public and
environmental health.
GGHH members from across the globe are working together in a global learning community
to share best practices, find solutions to the challenges they face, and achieve measurable
outputs.

NETWORK MEMBERSHIP
Founding members of the GGHH include government agencies, hospital associations, health
systems and individual hospitals representing the interests of more than 4,000 hospitals from
every continent. These include
» national hospital associations in China, Indonesia and Australia;
» national and municipal health authorities in Argentina, Chile, England, Mexico and Thailand;
» major hospitals and health systems in Brazil, India, Nepal, Korea, New Zealand, the United
States and more.

HOW TO JOIN THE NETWORK
The Global Green and Healthy Hospitals Agenda forms the foundation of the GGHH Network.
By endorsing the Agenda and committing to begin by implementing at least two of its goals,
hospitals and health systems can become members of GGHH.
Health professional, non-governmental and international organizations can also join the
Network by endorsing the Agenda and committing to promote it to the hospitals and health
systems they work with.
Membership in GGHH is free of charge.
