Europa ama los festivales europeos
Un lugar privilegiado para encuentros, intercambios y hallazgos,
los festivales ofrecen un ambiente vibrante y accesible para la
más amplia variedad de talentos, historias y emociones que constituyen la cinematografía europea.
El Programa MEDIA de la Unión Europea pretende promocionar el
legado audiovisual europeo, favorecer el tránsito de películas entre
países y alentar la competitividad en la industria audiovisual. El programa MEDIA reconoce el papel cultural, educativo, social y económico de los festivales cofinanciado cada año casi 100 de ellos por toda
Europa.
Estos festivales destacan por su rica y variada programación europea, por su red de contactos y las oportunidades de encuentro e intercambio tanto entre profesionales como entre el público en general;
por sus actividades de apoyo a los jóvenes profesionales; por sus iniciativas educativas y por la relevancia que se da al fortalecimiento del
diálogo entre culturas. En 2011, los festivales que recibieron la financiación del Programa MEDIA han programado más de 40.000
proyecciones de obras europeas para casi 3 millones de cinéfilos.
MEDIA se complace en apoyar la 27 edición del Cinema Jove Festival Internacional de Cine de Valencia y deseamos a todos
los participantes que disfruten de un acontecimiento estimulante y variado.

variety of talent, stories and emotions that constitute Europe’s
cinematography.
The MEDIA Programme of the European Union aims to promote
European audiovisual heritage, to encourage the circulation of films
outside their own borders and to foster audiovisual industry competitiveness. The MEDIA Programme acknowledges the cultural, educational, social and economic role of festivals by co-financing every year
almost 100 of them across Europe.
These festivals stand out with their rich and diverse European programming, networking and meeting opportunities for professionals and
the public alike, their activities in support of young professionals, their
educational initiatives and the importance they give to strengthening
inter-cultural dialogue. In 2011, the festivals supported by the MEDIA
Programme have programmed more than 40.000 screenings of
European works to nearly 3 million cinema-lovers.
MEDIA is pleased to support the 27 edition of the Valencia

Nació en Montpellier en 1963. Estudió en la Ecole Normale
Supérieure y obtuvo una Cátedra de Letras. Tras defender su tesis
doctoral sobre La opera y el amor en La Comédie humaine de
Balzac, se convierte en profesor en la Universidad de Paris XNanterre, donde sigue impartiendo clases, y escribe su primer
guión, Jeanne et le garçon formidable. En 1995 conoce a Olivier
Ducastel y deciden realizar juntos este primer largometraje, que
fue seleccionado para la competición oficial del Festival de Berlín
1998 y que tuvo dos nominaciones a los premios César: mejor
opera prima y mejor música original.
En 1999 dirigen Drôle de Félix, que fue presentado en la
sección Panorama de la Berlinale 2000 y recibió el Premio especial del Jurado Teddy. Ma vraie vie à Rouen, su tercer largo, se
presentó en competición oficial en los festivales internacionales
de Locarno y de Toronto en 2002. Crustacés et coquillages (2004)
se presentó en la sección Panorama de la Berlinale 2005, donde
obtuvo el ‘Label Europa Cinéma’. Nés en 68, aunque fue concebido como un telefilme para la cadena Arte, llegó a los cines en
2008. L!Arbre et la forêt (2010), premio Jean Vigo 2009 y
seleccionado en la sección Panorama del Festival de Berlín, fue
proyectado en la ceremonia de clausura del Festival Cinema Jove
en 2010. Su último largometraje, Juste la fin du monde de JeanLuc Lagarce, realizado para la televisión francesa, aún no se ha
estrenado.
Actualmente trabaja en la preparación de su nueva película,
Fous de Marlène.
He was born in Montpellier in 1963. He studied at the École
Normale Supérieure and obtained a Professorship in Letters. After
defending his PhD thesis on Opera and Love in Balzac!s The
Human Comedy, he obtained a professorship at the Université de
Paris X-Nanterre, where he currently lectures, and wrote his first
screenplay, Jeanne and the Perfect Guy. In 1995 he meets Olivier
Ducastel and they decide to make together this first feature, which
was selected for the competition at the 1998 Berlin Film Festival
and received two nominations for the César Prize: Best First Work
and Best Original Score.
In 1999 they directed Adventures of Félix, which was presented
at the Panorama section of Berlinale 2000 and received the Teddy
Special Jury Award. My Life on Ice (2002), their third film, was
presented at the official competition at the Locarno and Toronto
festivals in 2002. Mariscos Beach (2004) was presented at the
Panorama section of the Berlinale 2005 where it obtained the
‘Label Europa Cinéma’. The film Born in 68 was released out in
2008 even though it was first envisaged as a TV film for the Arte
channel. Family Tree (2010), Jean Vigo Award 2009 and selected
for the Panorama section at Berlin Festival, was screened at the
closing ceremony of the Cinema Jove Festival in 2010. Their last
film, Juste la fin du monde de Jean-Luc Lagarce, made for the
French television, has not yet been released.
He is currently working on their new film, Fous de Marlène.

Nacida en Lisboa en 1966, Teresa Villaverde es una de las
directoras que lideró las nuevas generaciones del cine portugués de los 90. Aún no teniendo una formación reglada en
estudios cinematográficos, trabajó como guionista y asistente
de edición antes de escribir y dirigir su primer largo a la edad
de 24 años.
Sus primeras películas se estrenaron en festivales de cine tan
importantes como el de Berlín - Idade maior, International
Forum of Young Cinema 1989 -, el de Venecia - Tres irmaos,
Premio a la Mejor Actriz para María de Medeiros 1995; Agua e
sal, 2001-, o el de Cannes - Os mutantes, Un Certain Regard
1998 –, y a partir de ahí se exhibieron por todo el mundo.
En 1994, su película Three Siblings ganó el premio a la
mejor actriz en el Festival de Cine de Venecia. Villaverde, que
ha vivido en varias ciudades europeas, está ahora establecida
en Lisboa.
En 2009 montó su propia productora y comenzó a producir
sus trabajos ella misma.
Born in Lisbon in 1966, Teresa Villaverde is one of the
leading directors of the young generation of Portuguese cinema
of the 90s. Although she has no formal education in film studies,
she worked as a screenwriter and assistant editor before writing
and directing her first feature film aged 24.
Her films have premiered at such prominent film festivals as
Berlin - Idade maior, International Forum of Young Cinema
1989 - , Venice - Tres irmaos, Best Actress Prize for María de

Tras pasar varios años haciendo reality-shows como realizador
(Gran Hermano, Confianza Ciega), dirige el programa de humor
de la televisión autonómica vasca, Vaya Semanita. Colabora en
otros programas de humor dirigiendo sketches y/o escribiéndolos: Made in China, Agitación + IVA, Splunge... En paralelo desarrolla su carrera como cortometrajista con La primera vez
(2001), Éramos pocos (2005) y Limoncello (2007). Sus cortos
han conseguido más de 100 premios en festivales de todo el
mundo, entre los que destaca una nominación al Oscar para
Éramos Pocos. En 2009 dirige Pagafantas, premiada en el
Festival de Málaga, el Festival de Comedia de Montecarlo, la
Bienal de Cine Español de Annecy y los Sant Jordi de la crítica
de Barcelona. También obtiene dos nominaciones al Goya,
incluyendo Mejor Dirección Novel. Su segundo largometraje es
No controles (2010), premio del público en el Festival de
Nantes. Además, colabora como columnista en la edición vasca
de El País.
He was born in San Sebastián in 1977. He is a director and
screenplay writer for film and television. After spending several
years working on reality-shows as a producer (Gran Hermano,
Confianza Ciega), he went on to direct the Basque autonomous
television comedy segment, Vaya Semanita. He has
collaborated in other humour programmes by directing sketches
and/or writing them: Made in China, Agitación + IVA and
Splunge. At the same time, he developed his career in making

plaire, una comedia musical. Tras finalizar su formación en el Idhec,
trabajó como asistente de montaje en Trois places pour le 26 de
Jacques Demy y como montador en Nous, les enfants du XXème siècle de Vitaly Kanevski. También colaboró como montador de sonido
con destacados directores, entre ellos Youssef Chahine y Marco
Ferreri. En 1995 conoce a Jacques Martineau y deciden realizar juntos su primer largometraje a partir de un guión de Martineau, Jeanne
et le garçon formidable, que fue seleccionado para la competición
oficial del Festival de Berlín 1998 y que tuvo dos nominaciones a los
premios César.

university before entering IDHEC (France’s Higher Institute for Film
Studies), where he directed his first short, Le goût de plaire, a musical comedy. After finishing his training at IDHEC, he worked as an
assistant editor under Jacques Demy - Trois places pour le 26 - and
as an editor under Vitaly Kanevski - Nous, les enfants du XXème
siècle-, as well as in sound editing under such key directors as
Youssef Chahine and Marco Ferreri. In 1995 he meets Jacques

Nació en 1976. Estudió Animación Sociocultural en la
Universidad de Arte y Ciencias Aplicadas y obtuvo su
‘Máster Ejecutivo de Administración Artística’ por la
Universidad de Zúrich. Desde 2003 es directora ejecutiva y
desde 2007 presidenta del Swiss Youth Film Days. Desde
2008, es la directora ejecutiva del Festival Internacional de
Cortometrajes de Winterthur. Es representante del
cortometraje como miembro de la junta de la Conferencia
de Festivales de suiza. También ha ocupado diferentes cargos de asesoramiento y ha elaborado programas de cortometraje para otros festivales y proyectos culturales.
She was born in 1976. She studied Socio-cultural
Animation at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and
Arts, and obtained her ‘Executive Master in Arts
Administration’ from the University of Zurich. Since 2003
she is the executive director and since 2007 the president
of the Swiss Youth Film Days. Since 2008, she is the
executive director of the International Short Film Festival
Winterthur. She does represent the short film as a board
member of the Swiss Conférence des festivals. She has
also held various advisory positions and has compiled short
film programmes for other festivals and cultural projects.

Nació en Barcelona y estudió interpretación en Los Ángeles, en la
escuela de Juan Carlos Corazza y en la de Nancy Tuñón. También
estudió canto, jazz, danza clásica y juego e improvisación.
Comenzó su carrera en la serie juvenil Al salir de clase, en la que
interpretó el papel de Ángela entre 2000 y 2002. Después de su
debut cinematográfico como la adolescente punki de El otro lado de
la cama, siguieron otras películas como Semen, una historia de amor
junto a Ernesto Alterio, Imago Mortis, con Geraldine Chaplin, e
Imagining Argentina, con Antonio Banderas y Emma Thompson.
Ha participado en películas tales como Spanish movie o Un café
en cualquier esquina, la cual tuvo 3 nominaciones a los Independent
Spirit Awards, y en conocidas series de televisión como Hospital
Central, Los Serrano, Guante blanco o El Barco.
Debuta como directora en su primer cortometraje, Lo siento, te
quiero, una reflexión sobre la libertad de elección del ser humano,
que obtiene el Premio al Mejor corto fantástico en el ‘Fantastic Fest
2010‘ de Austin (Texas). A este le siguió A o B, por lo que Leticia se
presenta como una joven actriz que promete como directora.
Entre sus últimos trabajos como actriz destacan sus papeles protagonistas en la opera prima de Paula Ortiz, De tu ventana a la mía,
y en la tercera entrega de la saga REC: [REC]3: Génesis, dirigida por
Paco Plaza. Actualmente se encuentra rodando Los Últimos Días, de
los hermanos Pastor.
She was born in Barcelona and studied acting in Los Angeles at
the drama schools belonging to Juan Carlos Corazza and Nancy
Tuñón respectively. Her broad-based studies also included singing,
jazz, classical dance and impromptu performance.
She started her acting career in the adolescent series, Al salir de
clase, in which she played the role of Angela between 2000 and
2002. After her cinema debut as a punk adolescent in The Other Side
of the Bed, she appeared in Semen, a Love Sample together with
Ernesto Alterio, Imago Mortis, with Geraldine Chaplin, and Imagining
Argentina, with Antonio Banderas and Emma Thompson.
She has participated in a variety of films such as Spanish movie
and Man push Cart which attracted 3 nominations at the Independent
Spirit Awards; she has appeared in well-known TV series such as
Hospital Central, Los Serrano, Guante blanco and El Barco.
She makes her debut as director in her first short film, Lo siento, te
quiero which focuses on the dilemma of freedom of choice faced by
human beings. She obtained an award for the Best Short Fantasy
Film at the Fantastic Fest 2010 in Austin, Texas. This work was
followed by A o B which clearly indicated that the young actress
Leticia had all the makings of director material.
Among her recent acting roles in films, mention must be made of
her as the main character in the first work by Paula Ortiz, De tu
ventana a la mía; another achievement was the third part of the REC
saga: [REC]3: Génesis, directed by Paco Plaza. She is currently
filming Los Últimos Días, by the Pastor brothers.

PREMIO LUNA DE VALENCIA: LONE SCHERFIG
Tenemos la satisfacción de entregar el Premio Luna de Valencia a Lone
Scherfig, cineasta que contamos entre los más libres e independientes surgidos en las últimas décadas. Llevábamos años intentando que el público del
Festival pudiera encontrarse con Scherfig, pero siempre un proyecto o un
rodaje nos impedía contar con su presencia. Felizmente, esto es posible en
esta 27 edición, y agradecemos la generosidad de Lone para hacerlo realidad.
Con tan sólo 29 años, Lone Scherfig (Copenhague, 1959) debutó en la gran
pantalla con Kaj’s fødselsdag / The Birthday Trip (1990), ganadora de cuatro premios en el Festival de Cine Nórdico y seleccionada para la sección
Panorama en la Berlinale. Su segunda cinta, la comedia Når mor kommer
hjem / On our own (1998), recibió el Premio del Festival de Cine de Montreal
y el Premio Cinekid en Amsterdam.
En 2000, Scherfig cambió radicalmente el rumbo de su trabajo al convertirse en la primera mujer en sumarse al movimiento cinematográfico Dogma 95,
creado por Thomas Vinterberg y Lars von Trier. Bajo el ‘voto de castidad’ dogmático, la realizadora rodó Italiano para principiantes (2000). Una comedia
galardonada en el Festival de Berlín con el Oso de Plata del Premio del jurado y con el Premio FIPRESCI; en el Festival de Chicago con el Premio Gold
Hugo a la Mejor Película; en el Festival de París con el Premio del Público; y
en la Seminci de Valladolid con la Espiga de Oro a la Mejor película, entre
otros muchos.
Dos años después, filmó su primera película en inglés, Wilbur se quiere suicidar (2002), estrenada en la Berlinale, a la que le siguió Hjemve / Just Like
Home (2007). El talento cinematográfico de Scherfig volvió a brillar en las
pantallas de todo el mundo con An Education (Gran Bretaña, 2009), protagonizada por Carey Mulligan. Consiguió tres nominaciones a los Oscar, el
Premio del Público en Sundance y el Premio Independent Spirit a la Mejor
Película extranjera. Su último filme, One Day. Siempre el mismo día (EE. UU,
2011), interpretado por Anne Hathaway y Jim Sturgess, vuelve sobre uno de
sus temas clave: el de las difíciles relaciones de pareja, esta vez con la relación de amor y amistad entre un hombre y una mujer a lo largo de 20 años.

LUNA DE VALENCIA:
LONE SCHERFIG
We have the utmost satisfaction of awarding the prize known as Premio Luna
de Valencia to Lone Scherfig, a filmmaker we see as one of the freest and most
independent in recent decades. For a number of years, we had been trying to
get Scherfig in front of the public but her extensive project or shooting
commitments sadly impeded this. Happily, she is now with us in this 27th
festival and we appreciate Lone Scherfig’s generosity in gracing us with her
presence.
When she was only 29, Lone Scherfig (born in Copenhagen in 1959) made
his debut on the big screen with The Birthday Trip in 1990; with it he won 4
awards at the Nordic Film Festival and was later selected for the Panorama
section at the Berlinale. His second work, the comedy On our own (1998)
attracted prizes at the Montreal Film Festival and at Amsterdam’s CINEKID
festival.
In 2000, Scherfig radically changed her professional trajectory when she
became the first woman to join the Dogma 95 Film Movement which was
founded by Thomas Vinterberg and Lars von Trier. Faithful to a dogmatic ‘vow
of chastity’, she shot the film Italian for Beginners (2000). This comedy
received the Silver Bear Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival as well as
attracting the FIPRESCI prize. In the Chicago Festival she won the Gold Hugo
Prize for the Best Film; at the Paris Festival she won the Public’s Prize and at
Valladolid’s Seminci festival, she won the golden ear of wheat or Espiga de Oro
for the Best Film among many other awards.
Two years later she made her first film in English, Wilbur Wants to Kill
Himself (2002), which was premiered at the Berlinale and which was followed
by Just Like Home (2007). Scherfig’s filmic talent shone once again on cinema screens the world over with An Education (United Kingdom, 2009) with
Carey Mulligan as leading actress. She has received three Oscar nominations,
the Public’s Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, as well as the Independent
Spirit Prize for the Best Foreign Film. Her last film One Day (U.S.A., 2011),
interpreted by Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, focus one of key themes –
the often complicated terrain of human love relationships and in this case, the
ups and downs of a relationship between a man and a woman over 20 years.
These are films we’ll all be able to relish at this, our 27th Cinema Jove
Festival.

“Priit Pärn was not thinking of being an animator; he graduated in Biology. Later, his energy and desire to move drove
him to work in different areas: a freelance graphic artist, a
caricature artist and an illustrator (he has made over 30 solo
exhibitions); an art and animated film director in the Tallinnfilm
Studio and in the Joonisfilm Studio; a producer; a lecturer at
the Turku School of Art in Finland, and in the one in Tallinn,
Estonia, in addition to numerous courses in the most prestigious schools in the world.
Priit Pärn is one of the greats in art and as such, he is not
to everyone’s tastes, though he leaves no one indifferent. He
has been seen as ‘exotic’ in the East and the West. He escapes from the constraints of conventional animation and narration by occupying his own space in this medium with a surrealistic style of dark images, drawings and prints full of uneasiness, repetitions, routines, false illusions and dissatisfactions.
He plays with transformations and rapid changes of
perspective, with mood, time and space”.

Celebramos las 20 ediciones de Un futuro de cine premiando a dos
actores que irrumpen con fuerza en el panorama cinematográfico español:
JOSÉ MOTA (Ciudad Real, 1965)
Tras dos décadas de éxito televisivo en programas humorísticos, especialmente con La hora de José Mota (2009-2012), su conmovedora
interpretación como protagonista en La chispa de la vida (Álex de la
Iglesia, 2011) ha logrado el reconocimiento de crítica y público tanto
españoles como internacionales, así como de los miembros de la
Academia cinematográfica española, que le nominaron en la última edición de los Premios Goya en la categoría de Mejor Actor Revelación.
Previamente había interpretado papeles en la segunda, tercera y cuarta
entrega de Torrente, de Santiago Segura, entre otras. En 2006 adaptó
para los teatros españoles, junto a Santiago Segura, la obra de Mel
Brooks The Producers (Los productores), basada en su película del
mismo título de 1968.
MICHELLE JENNER (Barcelona, 1986)
Reconocida ya por sus trabajos en televisión (Los hombres de Paco,

After two successful decades in the TV comedy genre, in particular with
the show La hora de José Mota (2009-2012), his outstanding interpretation as leading actor in La chispa de la vida (Álex de la Iglesia, 2011) has
earned for him the acclaim and recognition of critics and audiences alike,
both in Spain and abroad. Members of the Spanish Film Academy have
also granted their approval by nominating him in the last Goya Awards as
Best Revelation Actor. He had previously appeared in roles in the second,
third and fourth instalments of Torrente, by Santiago Segura, among
other acting appearances. In 2006, together with Santiago Segura, he
adapted for Spanish theatre stages Mel Brooks’ play The Producers
based on a 1968 film with the same title.

different movies released in recent months: No tengas miedo (Montxo
Armendáriz, 2011) and Extraterrestre (Nacho Vigalondo, 2011) which
have demonstrated her quality and versatility as an actress. She also
interpreted the Catholic Queen of Castile in the series Isabel (2012) to be
released for transmission by TVE. At the last Goya Awards she was
nominated for the Best Revelation Actress.

El director, guionista y actor Nacho Vigalondo protagoniza
en esta edición nuestra sección Cuadernos de rodaje.
Vigalondo (Cabezón de la Sal, Cantabria, 1977) es uno de los
cineastas más singulares y brillantes de la última generación
surgida en España. En 2004 fue premiado en nuestra Sección
Oficial de Cortometrajes por 7:35 de la mañana, el mismo título por el que sería nominado al Oscar en 2005, ganando con
ello reconocimiento internacional. Tras rodar varios cortometrajes más, en 2007 debuta en el terreno del largometraje con Los
cronocrímenes, logrando premios en los festivales de
Amsterdam, Austin y Filadelfia, entre otros. En 2011 estrena
una de las comedias más singulares y divertidas de los últimos
años, Extraterrestre, con la que gana, de nuevo en Austin, el
Premio del Jurado. En 2012 participa como director en The
ABC’s of Death y The Profane Exhibit, películas compuestas
por varios segmentos en las que intervienen diversos directores.
Cuadernos de rodaje recoge los títulos de la Historia del Cine
que más han influido en la carrera de Vigalondo; el cineasta
explicará los motivos de esta selección en su encuentro con el
público. El Festival programa, además, sus dos largometrajes y
los dos cortometrajes que compitieron en nuestra sección oficial.
The director, screenplay writer and actor Nacho Vigalondo is
the key guest in the Shooting Notes section of this year’s festival.
Vigalondo (born in Cabezón de la Sal, Cantabria in 1977) is a
brilliant and outstanding creator belonging to the new generation of Spanish film. In 2004, he was a winner in our Official
Short Film Category for his work 7:35 de la mañana, the same
title which was to win him an Oscar nomination in 2005 and with
it, international recognition. After making more short films, he
finished his first full-feature film in 2007 with Los
cronocrímenes; this work attracted prizes at the Amsterdam,
Austin and Philadelphia, film festivals, among others. In 2011,
he released one of the freshest and most daring comedies in
recent years with Extraterrestre which once again, won him the
Jury Prize at the Austin Film Festival. In 2012 he participated as
director in The ABC’s of Death and The Profane Exhibit, films
which are an amalgamation of various segments directed by
various film professionals.
Shooting Notes comprises a selection of key works in the history of film that have influenced Vigalondo’s film career; in his
programmed encounter with the movie-going public, the guest
filmmaker will be explaining the rationale of his selection of
films. Furthermore, the Festival is programming his two full-feature films and two short films that once competed in our Official
Category.

Ilustrador, escenógrafo y director de películas de animación checo. Es conocido por su extensa carrera como ilustrador, especialmente de libros infantiles y, sobre todo, por
su trabajo en la animación con marionetas.
A lo largo de su carrera, dirigió 22 películas, entre ellas 6
largometrajes, que consagraron lo que luego se denominó
‘estilo checo’ de animación. Su obra en este campo ejerció
una innegable influencia sobre otros cineastas.
El ciclo de cine se organiza con motivo del 100 aniversario de su nacimiento (24.2.1912). Esta fecha está incluida
en la lista oficial de los aniversarios UNESCO para el año
2012“.

Jiri Trnka is a Czech illustrator, scenographer and animated film director. He is well known for his solid career in
illustration, particularly in the area of children’s books as
well as for his animation work with puppets.
In his professional trajectory, he directed 22 films of which
6 were full feature films; these creations consecrated what
was to be later known as the ‘Czech style’ in animation.
His work in this genre had a profound influence on other
filmmakers.
This tribute to him by way of a film season commemorates the centenary of his birth (24.2.1912) and the date is
included in the official list of UNESCO commemorations for
2012”.

Se celebrará del 13 al 14 de junio en la Universidad de
Valencia, con el grupo de investigación del Centre de
Recherches Interdisciplinaires sur les Mondes Ibériques
Contemporains (CRIMIC, EA 2561) de la Université de ParisSorbonne, la Universidad de Valencia, y la Red de
Investigadores de Cine (REDIC) de México, con la colaboración
de la Universidad Autónoma de México (UAM) y del Festival
Internacional de Cine de Valencia – Cinema Jove, que proyectará durante la semana del Festival una selección de seis películas. En esta tercera edición se convoca a la comunidad académica a participar con el tema referente a los géneros cinematográficos y se tratarán los siguientes ejes de reflexión:
Elementos formales y recursos expresivos: de la tradición a la

The University of Valencia will be hosting on June 13 and 14
the Third International Symposium which will focus on genres in
film. It is organised by the Centre de Recherches
Interdisciplinaires sur les Mondes Ibériques Contemporains
(CRIMIC, EA 2561) of the University of Paris-Sorbonne, the
University of Valencia and the research network Red de
Investigadores de Cine (REDIC) from Mexico, in collaboration
with the Universidad Autónoma de México (UAM) and the
Valencia International Film Festival Cinema Jove, which will be
screening over the course of one week a selection of six films.
This is the third event of its type and the academic community
is invited to participate in the discourse analysis and debate
concerning film genres; the following perspectives will be dealt
with: Formal elements and expressive resources: from tradition
to rupture. The notion of authorship: between industrial art and
the personal hallmark. The socio-cultural function of genre:
archetypes, myths and rituals. Reception and expectations. The
film industry and new technologies: production processes,
distribution, exhibition and consumption. Hybrid genre: towards
a recasting of the concept of genre.

“La cinta de celuloide se convierte así en una materia a esculpir, idea
literalizada en las películas de Len Lye dada la gran importancia que
ocupa el volumen. Ya sea pintando o arañando la película, la mano, y
no ya la cámara, desempeña pues un papel crucial en la elaboración
de las obras puesto que interviene directamente sobre el celuloide.
Estas técnicas de cine directo permiten también a estos artistas descubrir el efecto estimulante del azar y de lo accidental durante el acto
creativo, a la vez que tienen acceso a una realidad totalmente nueva
ya que el universo que emerge de los pinceles, del spray o de cualquier otro procedimiento que utiliza el cineasta es literalmente inédito
pues ya no es resultado de la captación de un mundo existente.
Otra forma de ahorrarse el rodaje: el uso de tiras de found-footage literalmente ‘Metraje encontrado’- que designa a la vez una corriente y
práctica que tienen como punto de partida la reutilización de materiales
fílmicos o sonoros preexistentes. Este tipo de películas – incluso si no
son elaboradas a partir de elementos que solo la mano graba sobre la
película – comparte con el cine directo el hecho de que los cineastas
que trabajan en la recuperación de elementos encontrados no utilizan
pues la cámara por su cuenta”.

“Celluloid film thus becomes a material to be sculpted, an idea made
literal in the films of Len Lye, given the great importance placed on
volume. Whether painting or scratching on the film, it is the hand and
not the camera that plays a crucial role in creating the work, since the
former acts directly on the celluloid. These direct cinema techniques
also allow these artists to discover the stimulating effect of chance and
randomness in the act of creation, while also having access to a whole
new reality. This is because the universe emerges from the brushes,
from the spray can or from any other process the filmmaker uses, and
is literally original as it is not the result of capturing an existing world.
Another way to save on shooting is to use strips of found-footage, a
term that describes both a trend and a practice that began with the
reuse of sound and film materials that already existed. This kind of film
— even if it is not made only from things a hand has recorded on the
film — is similar to direct cinema in that filmmakers working on recovering items they have found no longer use the camera themselves”.

Opera Prima surge de un interés del Festival Internacional de Cine
de Valencia - Cinema Jove por el “Emprendedor Audiovisual”. Busca
realizar una actividad didáctica “Cómo hacer un cortometraje” y llegar
a un público infinito utilizando las nuevas tecnologías.
Nuestro público objetivo necesita apoyo para hacer de su pasión
una realidad que se quiere convertir en proyecto empresarial. El público emprendedor de esta actividad es un enamorado del cine y las nuevas tecnologías.
Durante la actividad se trabajarán todos los pasos de creación de
un cortometraje de la mano de profesionales de larga experiencia, y
podrán participar todos aquellos mayores de 18 años interesados en el
mundo audiovisual y sin experiencia profesional en el medio. Dicha
actividad podrá seguirse online a través de nuestra plataforma digital.
De esta forma, tanto las charlas, las clases magistrales y todo el proceso de creación del cortometraje será emitido en directo, a través
de nuestro canal de televisión cinemajove.tv, para que todo el mundo
pueda seguirlo, y así participar online en la actividad. Además, todo
este material quedará archivado en un blog para que pueda ser consultado también en un futuro y tenga uso didáctico. Es una forma de
facilitar a los interesados el acceso al curso y al material cuando lo
deseen.
A lo largo de 6 días, seremos testigos de cómo trabaja un equipo
de cine.

OPERA PRIMA
Opera Prima is the result of a specific demand detected by the
Valencia International Film Festival Cinema Jove to cater for the role of
the Audiovisual Entrepreneur. It seeks to offer an educational activity such as “How to make a short film” and is aimed at reaching an infinite and varied audience by way of new technologies.
Thinking about the needs of the interest group we are targeting,
we realised the kind of support that budding audiovisual entrepreneurs
needed in order to convert their dreams to a well-grounded and
workable business proposal. It goes without saying that audiences
which are at the same time entrepreneurial audiences have a passion
for film as well as for new technologies.
In the course of the activity, all of the steps in the creation of a short
film will be dealt with; instructors with a proven track-record in the film
industry will be offering guidance to participants which must be 18
years of age or over. The participants must have an interest in film and
have had no prior experience in filmmaking. The activity will be
available online thanks to the digital platform we have set up.
Accordingly, the lectures and segments on creating a short film will be
transmitted live on the cinemajove.tv channel so that everybody will be
able to follow the course in an online mode. Furthermore, all of the
material generated will be stored on a blog site so that we can all refer
to it in the future and make use of its educational scope. It has been
envisaged this way in order to provide access to the course content as
needed by users in the future.
Over 6 days, we will witness how a filmmaking team operates.

Producciones audiovisuales que incorporan las nuevas
tecnologías de la comunicación. Obras audiovisuales multiplataforma que incluyen un planteamiento transmedia y
crossmedia y que están ideadas para servirse a través de
cualquier dispositivo: teléfono móvil, ordenador, mp4,
WebTV, IPTV, etc. La narrativa de estas producciones gira
sobre una idea central que actúa de manera transversal en
todos los dispositivos de comunicación e integra las tres
plataformas fundamentales de comunicación existentes:
gráfica-web-vídeo. Webseries destinadas a nuevas vías de
comunicación. Una nueva forma de comunicar, una nueva
narrativa.
Los proyectos multiplataforma que se proyectan han contado con el apoyo del Instituto Valenciano del Audiovisual y
de la Cinematografía (IVAC) y de Radio Televisión
Valenciana (RTVV).
Audiovisual productions have been embracing new communication technologies. Multiplatform audiovisual works
now have a trans-media and cross-media rationale; it’s all
about enhancing availability over a number of different
formats: mobile phone, computer, mp4, WebTV, IPTV, etc.
The discourse of these productions revolves around the
transversal nature of different communicative formats and
combines the three fundamental communication platforms in
existence: graphics-web-video. We now have Web series
geared towards these new communication avenues. It’s the
age of new communicative dimensions and with it, a whole
new discourse.
The multiplatform projects that we’ll be seeing have
received funding and assistance from the Instituto
Valenciano del Audiovisual y de la Cinematografía (IVAC)
and Radio Televisión Valenciana (RTVV).
