Its lively souks, ancient mosques and Grand Socco (market place) offer a different world, and it is a great place to spend indulging personal tastes, unexpected curiosities and a colourful meeting point of old and new. From Tangier you can visit the ancient dazzling city of Tetouan, is perched majestically on a cliff. This charming hilltop city is full of winding streets and is a true synthesis of Andalucian and Moroccan cultures. TANGIER Visiting Churches and Mosques – Shoulders and knees must be covered. If prayer or religious services are taking place, interior visits may not be permitted. Crowds – Crowds and queues are to be expected. Please stay with your group. The tour guides must retain a certain pace, often quite fast, in order to fulfil itineraries. Excursion itineraries are subject to deviation and order of sights may vary, to avoid delays. Pickpocket Awareness – Passengers are reminded that they should keep their valuables close to them at all times and not engage in lengthy conversations with street vendors. Shopping –The currency in Tangier is the Moroccan Dirham. Euros and Sterling notes along with most major credit cards are, however, often accepted in local markets and tourist shops. Tetouan 5 by coach and on foot TNG001 Tetouan is picturesquely situated on the nothern slopes of the Djebel Dersa mountain and overhangs the fertile and green orchard filled valley of the Oued Martil. Tetouanis affectionately call their city ‘The Daughter of Granada’ as it is dominated architecturally by the Hispanic influence. You’ll see the odd mix of Spanish and Moorish architecture, white walled houses and green tiled roofs. Tetouan was built by Muslim refugees from Spain in the 15 th century, and was expanded by the Spanish government in the 20th century. Explore enchanting Tetouan, a city which holds all the fascination you would expect from Morocco. Begin your tour at the Souk el Hots, followed by the Guersa El Kebira Square, with its traditional fabric shops, and make a stop at the Place de l’Usàa, where you will see some impressive architecture. From here, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the labyrinth of alleyways of the Médina. Due to its relatively small size, it offers visitors a chance to explore without getting hopelessly lost. There are 3 distinct sections of the Médina, the Andalucian, Jewish, and Berber sections, which now form a part of UNESCO’s World Heritage List. A welcoming refreshment of mint tea and a pastry will be served at a local restaurant to give you time for peaceful contemplation. Finally you’ll view the exterior of the impressive King’s Palace before heading back to the ship. Essential information. Tangier Fantasia and Panorama SOMETHING DIFFERENT 3 by coach and on foot TNG002 At the crossroads of Europe and Africa, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, Tangier opens the door onto Morocco. You drive to ‘Ahlen Village’ where you will discover the charms of true Moroccan hospitality with a spectacular ‘Fantasia Show’. Housed in a tent, the acrobats and folklore troop begin the show along with regional live music. Outside the tent, the horses will take centre stage and delight you with their formations and trickery. During the show you’ll be served Moroccan mint tea and cookies. The drive up to your photo stop, at the lighthouse at Cap Spartel is stunning. It is set on the extreme North Cape of the African continent and sometimes, on a clear day, you can see the extraordinary meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranrean Sea, one turqouise and the other a dark blue sea. Returning to Tangier you’ll drive through the residential district with its mansion houses, and along through the main avenues of the new town to the sandy beach resort of Malabata with its seaside hotels, restaurants and sidewalk cafés. Essential information. The venue for the Fantasia Show is not air conditioned. There is approximately 15 minutes of walking on this tour. Tangier, the ‘White City’, star of many films, and the city of many stars. Be mesmerised by the charm of the Fantasia Show. Tangier City Tour 4 TNG004 by coach and on foot Tangier sits on the North African shores of one of the most important waterways in the world. The principle city on the straights of Gibraltar, Tangier is the the gateway to Africa and the window to Europe. Begin your excursion with a drive along the city’s sandy promendade to ‘Hercules Grotto’, considered to be the symbol of Tangier. Legend has it that Hercules rested here after he had separated Gibraltar from Africa. Discover the highlights of Tangier and get a true flavour of the modern and historical delights of this bustling city. Continue your panoramic drive towards ‘Cap Spartel’, with its striking lighthouse built in 1860. Here, you’ll stop briefly to marvel at the view from this north-westerly point of Africa and enjoy a typical Moroccon refreshment of mint tea and a pastry. Head back to Tangier, for a visit to the Kasbah, the fortified citadel within the old town. The diversity of the bustling crowds, heavy fragrances in the markets, the murmurs of the sea and the city blend together a cocktail of sensations to stun the senses. You’ll also see the vibrant fruit and vegetable market and the heart of the city, the Grand Socco, a huge market place that echos the shouts of haggling merchants. Complete your tour with visit to the Medina, a labyrinth of quaint streets bordered with fabric shops. Essential information. There is approximately 1½ hours of walking on this tour, over uneven ground and cobbled streets. There are 50 steps to negotiate at the Kasbah and 20 steps at Hercules Grotto. Shopping time is not included in this tour. Make the most of your time ashore. Half day tours take you to see the main sights and then give you the rest of the day to explore independently. If you want to delve a little deeper, then consider a full day tour which takes you further afield often to places you can’t see independently. ALICANTE Alicante, with its palm-lined promenade and Castillo de Santa Barbara dominating the town, is the Costa Blanca’s principal city. Excursion opportunities here will allow you to become acquainted with the city and its surroundings - including Benidorm, Guadalest and Elche. Guadalest 5½ ALC001 Perched like an eagle’s nest on the mountainside, the ‘must-see’ village of Guadalest is one of the most visited sites in Spain. by coach and on foot Guadalest enjoys a spectacular location, set high on a pinnacle and carved into the mountain. Declared a ‘Monument of Historical and Artistic Value’, it’s easy to see why so many tourists flock to this stunning village every year. A short guided tour takes you through the cobbled streets of this fairytale village and lets you enjoy the spectacular views. Head for the upper village, through a tunnel hewn out of the rock, on which the castle ruins and church’s distinctive belfry are precariously perched. Here, you’ll visit the tastefully restored ‘House of the Ordunas’ (the former overlords of the valley) before taking the spiral steps to the ruined castle and strolling to the cobbled village square. Alicante, City of Moors ALC003 Explore the baroque-style Monastery of Santa Faz, with its pyramid-shaped dome. Inside the Monastery, you’ll find a relic brought from the Vatican in the 15th century which, as tradition has it, is actually a cloth used by Christ to dry his bloodied face during the Stations of the Cross. Enjoy a glass of locally produced Moscatel wine or some freshly squeezed orange juice during a photo stop in the mountainous outskirts of Guadalest. Essential information. There is approximately 45 minutes of walking over uneven, cobblestoned streets and some steep steps and inclines. Flat comfortable shoes are recommended. Please take local currency. 4½ by coach and on foot Visit the Moorish Castle of Santa Barbara, one of Europe’s largest medieval fortresses. Set high on Benacantil Hill, gaze down from the Castle battlements over the city and surrounding coastline. A panoramic drive then takes you down to the San Juan Beach, where you’ll stop for a refreshing glass of Sangria. Explore Alicante – a bustling, cosmopolitan city with a fascinating Moorish past. Guadalest’s many craft and souvenir shops are sure to tempt you – you’ll have time to browse in the shops for handicrafts including ceramics, lace, olive-wood carvings and Lladro porcelain, to name but a few. A guided stroll takes you through the charming old Moorish quarter, nestling at the foot of the imposing Castle. The Cathedral Church of Saint Nicholas has an austere renaissance façade, and inside you’ll discover a magnificent 17th century nave and 15th century cloister. You’ll also see the impressive 18th century baroque Town Hall, where your guide will provide you with details of its imposing exterior before some free time. On the beautiful palm-lined Esplanade of Spain, sample the delicious local specialty first introduced to Alicante by the Moors: ‘Horchata’, a sweetened milk of crushed tiger nuts. Essential information. This tour involves walking over cobbled streets with steps at the Town Hall. There are also steep steps and inclines at the Castle. An interior visit of the Town Hall cannot be made at weekends. The order of highlights may vary. Elche City of Palms BEST SELLER ALC005 5 by coach and on foot Set in the heart of Costa Blanca, the World Heritage site of Elche is surrounded by thousands of palm trees, which were originally introduced by the Phoenicians in around 300 BC. Enjoy a stroll along the paths between the lilystrewn ponds and the abundant plants, shrubs, trees and cacti in the Priest’s Garden. The Garden’s focal point is the magnificent 8 trunked ‘Imperial Palm’. Treat your taste buds to a specially-prepared tasting of local produce such as dates, fig bread, dried apricots and date liqueur, while you watch a demonstration of how a palm tree is pruned. Visit Elche, a World Heritage Site, known as the ‘Palm Forest of Europe’, and sample some delicious local delicacies. In the old town centre, a short visit will be made to the Basilica de Santa Maria. A delightful, bluedomed Baroque church, built in the 17th century and where the yearly passion play, the ‘Mystery of Elche’ is held. Stroll through the tranquil Municipal Park before departing to Alicante to visit the Santa Barbara Castle, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Apart from the interesting historical aspect, there are stupendous views over the City of Alicante and the coastline. Enjoy a panoramic drive back to the ship. Essential information. This tour involves approximately 1 hours total walking over flat, hard-packed sand and pavements. Steps, inclines and cobbled stones are to be negotiated at the Santa Barbara Castle. Transfer to Benidorm ALC009 by coach The pace of life on this transfer is entirely up to you. With a fabulous climate any time of the year, the choices are endless. Visit one of Benidorm’s vast expanses of fine golden sand beaches – Levante or Poniente, which have been awarded with European Blue Flags and are amongst the best in the world. Take a stroll through the quaint, narrow streets of the old town, sit on the headland between the beaches, and enjoy the views from the lookout point. Shop in the souvenir stores or in the fashionable clothes and shoe boutiques. Benidorm, the most popular resort on the Costa Blanca. CAGLIARI Southern Sardinia has a varied landscape with tall sand dunes along the coast, marshland where pink flamingos build their nests and abundant maquis, where the rare Sardinian deer still roam. It is also an area of interesting prehistoric sites and was once the mining heartland of the area. Ancient Sardinia 4 CAG002 by coach and on foot Enjoy a scenic drive through the town of Cagliari and up to Monte Urpinu. You’ll then continue along the south-western coast of Sardinia, the same route taken by thousands of pilgrims every year as they follow the Santo Efiso Cart. You’ll pass the S Gilla Lagoon to glimpse the pink flamingos in the distance. Founded under Carthaginian rule, the ancient city of Nora was built on a spit of land jutting out to sea. The town became the island’s most important city, a role it continued to enjoy under the Romans. Still partly submerged by the sea, the city was excavated at the beginning of the last century, revealing its ancient origins. A visit to the ancient city of Nora is a must for those who enjoy delving into rich archaeological sites. Sights and Sounds Essential information. This tour involves walking over rough and uneven ground. Flat, comfortable walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Passengers wishing to use the toilet facilities may be required to make a purchase at the café. During late season cruise calls, passengers are advised that the café may be closed. by coach and on foot Enjoy a drive up to Monte Urpinu where you can look back at the old city, dominated by the Cathedral, and across to the area of Molentargius Salinas, known for its exotic bird-life. En route to Maracalagonis, you’ll have views of Poetto Beach, the most popular beach in Cagliari. Maracalagonis is a farming community situated approximately 15 miles from Cagliari, at the foot of the Fratelli Mountains. Herds of wild boar and rare Sardinian deer can still be found here in the mountains. The local people in this region still retain many age-old traditions. You’ll spend time After your visit to the archaeological site, you’ll have some free time to admire the coastal surroundings and beach. Relax and purchase a drink or an ice cream at the nearby café before the return journey to Cagliari. 4 CAG003 Sample some wonderful local Sardinian flavour and enjoy a lively folkloric show. Admire the 400 year old Spanish watchtower, the massive public bath system, splendid mosaics and a theatre almost intact after nearly 20 centuries. You’ll also have an opportunity to see the Roman Theatre and the Punic Temple of Ashmun. at a typical country house where you’ll be welcomed by the owners and made to feel at home in the courtyard setting. Dancers in traditional Sardinian dress will perform folk dances for your entertainment. You’ll have a chance to sample some delightful Sardinian refreshments of wines and cookies, prepared according to traditional recipes, whilst you enjoy the surroundings and local music. Essential information. This tour involves 150 metres of walking, on a flat paved street. An awning and trees around the courtyard will provide some shade during the folk dance performance, however you may wish to take sun protection and insect repellent. In the case of inclement weather the performance will be inside and the performance may not be exclusive to P&O Cruises. Panoramic Cagliari and Wine Tasting 4 by coach and on foot CAG004 Become acquainted with Sardinia with a short drive through the city of Cagliari to the Basilica of Bonaire, where a stop will be made at a vantage point to admire the view over Cagliari. Your guide will introduce you to their culture and the fascinating history of the Church. Returning to Cagliari city centre, you’ll have approximately 45 minutes of free time to explore this bustling city before returning to the ship. Essential information. Limited shops will be open on Sundays. There is approximately 1 hour of total walking on this tour. Continue onto Monte Urpino, for a brief photo opportunity commanding spectacular views of the Gulf of Angels, the salt ponds and the Molentargius Lagoon, a safe harbour to the splendid pink flamingos. Salerno Located on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Salerno neighbours Italy's cherished Amalfi Coast. Set out from Salerno to visit the Amalfi Coast or stay and explore the city's long and eventful history before enjoying a leisurely stroll along Salerno's stunning Lungomare Trieste (seafront promenade), which rivals those of the French Riviera. The owner will accompany you on a tour of the farm and explain the processes that go into the production of Mozzarella cheese. During your drive, you’ll have wonderful views from the Sorrento coast of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius in the distance. Essential information. There is an uphill walk of approximately 10 minutes to reach the farmhouse. The visit of Sorrento town will be on foot but the amount of walking is at passengers’ own discretion. Flat, comfortable shoes are recommended. The order of this itinerary may vary. Easy Amalfi 3½ by coach, motor launch and on foot SAL005 After a short transfer you'll board your motor launch and enjoy a 45 minute cruise towards Amalfi. En route you’ll be able to admire the Dolomite cliffs, which have been sculpted by nature into fantastic shapes and tower perpendicularly out of the sea. The picturesque seaside resort of Amalfi lies at the mouth of a deep gorge as it is one of the most popular holiday resorts in Italy. Amalfi played an important role in the Middle Ages as it was part of the 4 Maritime Republics that included Venice, Genoa and Pisa. Experience Italy's famous coastline by motor launch and visit the village of Amalfi on this leisurely option. You’ll have free time to take photos and stroll along the narrow streets to the Piazza del Duomo. From this square, a flight of 60 or more steps leads to the impressive Cathedral of St Andrew. Salerno and Cheese Tasting The interior of the church dates as far back as the 13th century with the highlight of the Cathedral being the 11th century bronze doors from Constantinople. Explore the village and shop for handcrafted majolica, a soft earthernware ceramic which has been a typical Amalfi Coast souvenir since the Middle Ages. Essential information. Passengers must be able to walk approximately 100 metres over even surfaces with 5 to 10 steps and must to be able to embark and debark the motor launch. The motor launch has both interior and exterior seating. The streets of Amalfi are cobbled and inclined. Flat, comfortable shoes are advisable. Passengers wishing to enter the Cathedral of St Andrew independently must ascend approximately 60 or more very steep steps. SOMETHING DIFFERENT SAL006 by coach and on foot Enjoy a scenic drive up to the majestic Arechi Castle located on Mount Bonadies. This castle is set 300 metres above the Tyrrhenian Sea and offers spectacular views over Salerno. Here you will enjoy a mozzarella cheese making demonstration, followed by a taste of local products. Afterwards, you will join your guide on a walking tour of the historical centre of Salerno and visit the St Matthew Cathedral. A covered walkway is supported by 28 plain columns with arches and a series of Roman tombs around the walls. On the southern side of the Cathedral stands the bell tower which dates back to 12th century. Visit Arechi Castle, where you will learn the methods of mozzarella production and discover the historical centre of Salerno on foot. Ruins of Pompeii The crypt is situated under the main alter and it is made up of 9 rows of 3 bays with a cross shaped vault which rests on pillars. Essential information. There is approximately 1 hour of walking on this tour and a very steep incline and some steps at the entrance of the Castle. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Headsets will be provided to listen to guide’s commentary inside the Cathedral. Please dress appropriately for entering churches. The crypt is closed on Sunday and during Mass (especially on Saturday and Sunday), the guide will give a commentary from the outside and passengers will enter on individual basis. 3½ by coach and on foot Take a guided walk through the rocky ruins of the excavated city of Pompeii. The baths and the theatres, the wrestling ground and the luxurious villas stand empty, yet there are many echoes of Pompeii's daily life; the wine jars are still set on the counter of the wine shop, the stepping stones are there to help you cross the street in the rainy season, and the mosaic floors and brilliant frescoes are a wonder to this very day. The plaster casts of the volcano's victims are particularly poignant and one can never forget the horrible events that brought life in Pompeii to an end. After your visit to the Cathedral, enjoy some free time in the town centre to browse for souvenirs or enjoy an Italian ice cream before returning to the ship. BEST SELLER SAL008 Two-thirds of the ancient city of Pompeii has been excavated allowing you to explore this once flourishing civilisation. 4½ Your guide will recount the fascinating story of Pompeii, its demise and how it has been miraculously excavated and restored over hundreds of years. During your drive to Pompeii, you’ll have views of Vesuvius, the still-active volcano located about 15 miles south east of Naples. Essential information. A substantial amount of walking is required on this tour and surfaces are uneven and cobbled. Flat, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Pushchairs are not recommended at Pompeii. Toilet facilities are limited. CATANIA Catania is a really splendid Baroque city. Built with black volcanic stone and yet sunny and luminous, it has the highest average of sunny days in the whole of Italy. This provincial capital which is situated on an extensive plain of citrus groves on the Ionian sea is dominated by the impressive Mount Etna. Taormina On Your Own CAT001 6 by coach and on foot You’ll have approximately 4 hours in the charming hillside town of Taormina to explore, shop for souvenirs or just sit in one of the many street cafés and watch the world go by. Due to large vehicle restrictions, your coach will stop in the underground parking area, where you’ll take the lifts and steps to street level and the Square of Porta Catania. This tour is unguided, so please pay close attention to the pick-up point and time, as coaches cannot be held for latecomers. Entrance fees to the Greek-Roman Theatre are not included. An ideal option for those who would prefer to explore the delights of Taormina independently. Essential information. Passengers are advised that although the walking is optional, the terrain is mostly cobbled and uneven around the town. Lifts must be used from the parking area to access the town centre. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The duration of free time is approximate and dependant on local conditions. Taormina is a popular destination, which can become very crowded in peak season. Passengers wishing to use the café restrooms in Taormina are expected to make a purchase. Euros and credit or debit cards are accepted for purchases. If queues form for the use of the lift, then the return to the parking area will be via 140 steps. There are some tunnels (no longer than 2 minutes long) to pass through on the journey to Taormina. Etna Scenic Drive 3½ by coach CAT007 Heading towards Etna, your drive will take you through villages located on the southern slopes of the volcano; such as Trecastagni, Pedara and Nicolosi. You’ll see the remnants of the past and more recent eruptions, last of which was in 2004, and see the streams of solidified lava like a black petrified river cascading down from the top of the mountain. Discover the contrasting scenery of Sicily on a leisurely panoramic drive Mount Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe at 10,000 feet high. Take in the panoramic views from the volcano and over the city of Catania, overwhelmed by an eruption 300 years ago. Take a walk around the lunar like landscape of Crateri Silvestri and visit 3 extinct craters formed after an eruption at the beginning of 19th century. Enjoy some free time to browse the souvenir shops or purchase a refreshing drink before heading back to Catania. Essential information. The drive from Catania is approximately 1¼ hours each way, traffic permitting. Traffic can be heavy in and around Catania and delays may be experienced. Views of Mount Etna and surrounding areas are dependent on local weather conditions. The terrain around the crater is uneven and rocky, so flat, covered shoes with good grip are essential. A jacket is advisable. This tour does not visit the summit of Mount Etna. Passengers wishing to use the restrooms are expected to pay 50 cents. Mount Etna by Vintage Train 8 by coach, train and on foot CAT014 Embark on a scenic drive via the motorway through the northern slopes of Mount Etna to reach Linguaglossa. The narrow-gauge Circumetnea Railway runs around Etna on a leisurely 1 hour journey, through beautiful scenery, past lava-built towns, Norman castles, and pistachio and citrus groves. Enjoy a delightful journey around Mount Etna on the Circumetnea Railway, across a land of surprising contrasts of nature and tradition. Your exclusive diesel engine dates back to the 1950s, and has been restored for your enjoyment. A stop will be made at Randazzo, called the “Black Town” since lava has been used to pave its streets. It has also been used in the construction of its buildings and monuments, such as the Church of Santa Maria, originally built in the 13th century. The façade includes a bell tower with 4 floors. In the early afternoon you will visit the lord Nelson’s Castle. It is a former Benedectine abbey dedicated to St Mary, and named after the Greek General Maniakes, whose troops drove Saracens out of Sicily. The Castle stands on the field of that famous battle. It comprises a splendid park and a small Arab-Norman church dedicated to Santa Maria di Maniace, containing many interesting masterpieces as a precious 12th century carving depicting the Enthroned Virgin with San Biagio, San Antonio and Santa Lucia. Essential information. There is approximately 1½ hours of walking on this tour.
