millions of women overcome painful intercourse.
Laser treatment for the vagina might sound like torture, but for many women the Mona Lisa
Touch—the first intravaginal laser treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration—
could prove to be life changing.
The Mona Lisa Touch is designed to treat vaginal atrophy, a condition often precipitated by
menopause in which the walls of the vagina thin and dry out, rendering intercourse painful and
often interfering with urinary function as well. The North American Menopause Society (NAMS)
estimates that anywhere between 20 to 45 percent of middle-aged and elderly women experience
symptoms associated with vaginal atrophy, constituting a potential market of millions of women.

But despite the overwhelming number of women who suffer from symptoms of vaginal atrophy,
NAMS notes that “only a minority seek help or are offered help by their providers.”
The Mona Lisa Touch counteracts vaginal atrophy with a small laser that stimulates collagen
production inside the vagina, restoring the vaginal mucosa and rehydrating the vaginal walls. As is
the case with a standard laser treatment at a dermatologist, this form of intravaginal laser
treatment does not require anesthesia and side effects are minimal, typically including some
redness or swelling that lasts one or two days. As the Cincinnati Enquirer reports, the Mona Lisa
Touch is currently in clinical trials at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, where a set of three
treatments is currently being offered as an outpatient procedure at a cost of $1500. Prior to its

For many women who suffer from vaginal atrophy, the
introduction of the Mona Lisa Touch into the U.S. market will
mark the first time they have access to safe medical technology
that can alleviate their symptoms. In the past, treatment
options for vaginal atrophy have typically consisted of hormone
therapies that counteract symptoms by increasing estrogen
levels, the same sorts of treatments used to manage most
menopausal symptoms. But women who have an estrogen
contraindication—including women with breast cancer, a
history of stroke, or certain forms of heart disease—often
cannot undergo any form of estrogen therapy. Because
intravaginal laser treatment directly targets the symptoms of
vaginal atrophy instead of altering hormone levels, technology like the Mona Lisa Touch will be a
viable treatment option for these women going forward.
If it seems too good to be true, there is one potential problem facing the Mona Lisa Touch:
Because the technology is so new, insurers have not yet announced whether or not they will cover
intravaginal laser treatments. So far, women who have undergone treatment at The Christ
Hospital have had to pay out of pocket for the procedure. But given the fact that 75 percent of
women who suffer from vaginal atrophy experience negative consequences in their sex life, it
would seem hypocritical for insurers to continue to deny coverage while also paying for similar
treatments that rehabilitate the sex lives of men.
As Dr. Mickey Karram, the director of urogynecology at The Christ Hospital told the Cincinnati
Enquirer, “When I heard about that, no insurance, I said, ‘What about penile implants and
Viagra?’”

MonaLisa Touch is a treatment for Vaginal Atrophy after

As already mentioned, The MonaLisa Touch is a fractional CO2 laser that is specifically designed to
treat vaginal tissue.
The MonaLisa Touch was recently approved by the FDA (12/2014) for the treatment of the
symptoms associated with Vaginal Atrophy such as:
Vaginal itching
Vaginal dryness
Pain during intercourse
Vaginal laxity
Additionally, patients have experienced relief to secondary symptoms such as urinary
incontinence.
Because of the last item on the vaginal atrophy list, many people have mistaken this treatment as
a vaginal tightening treatment. Although patients will notice a tightening due to the changes in the
thickness and texture of their vaginal tissue, the goal of this treatment is not to tighten. It is to
change the underlying health of the tissue so that women in menopause can "feel normal' again.
Although it is a fractional CO2 laser treatment that is fired inside of the vagina, there is no pain
associated with the treatment itself. The only discomfort that my patients encounter is on their
initial treatment when first inserting the laser handpiece into the vagina. This discomfort is due to
the patient's vaginal atrophy symptoms and they have indicated that it is less discomfort than a
speculum insertion. Most patients describe the actual laser firing as a slight vibration.

A typical MonaLisa treatment takes 3 minutes or less of actual laser-treatment time. As a patient,
your visit would go something like:
After check-in, your vital signs will be taken.
You will be brought into the procedure room, where you will be given some privacy so that
you can disrobe and put on a gown.
You will then be placed on an exam table and your feet will be placed in stirrups in the
same manner as a vaginal exam / pap.
The physician place a sterile "insertion ring" into your vaginal opening (this is a circular
device that allows the laser handpiece to be inserted and moved without rubbing against
your labia).
After complete insertion, the laser will be fired, moved, fired again, etc. until the entire
inside of the vagina has been treated.
After the treatment, you will need to refrain from putting anything in your vagina for a few
days.
Some patients have indicated that their first urination after the treatment feels different
(not painful). They have described it as "noticing" or "feeling" their urine flow in a different
way.
Most patients experience symptom relief within the first week. All of our patients have expressed
significant improvement within 2 weeks.
The current recommendation is that patients should receive a maintenance treatment on a yearly
basis to prevent vaginal atrophy symptoms from reoccurring.
Every patient we have treated has been ecstatic with their results.
I cannot stress enough how life-changing this treatment has been for our patients. These women
have suffered for years. Some have not been able to be intimate with their partners for years and
now can be again.
Vaginal atrophy affects millions of post-menopausal women and this is the first real medical
treatment that they have that is non-hormonal and provides real long-term relief.
Additionally, many breast cancer survivors suffer from this condition as well. Due to their medical
history of cancer, they cannot use hormone therapy for relief. This is their only real treatment at
the current time.

announced that clinical data will be presented at a national meeting of gynecologists and ObGyns
that will show a statistically significant improvement in the vaginal health of women treated with

At the 2014 Pelvic Anatomy and Gynecologic Surgery Symposium (PAGS) in Las Vegas, a
symposium titled, "A New and Novel Therapy for Vulvovaginal Atrophy: Results of the First U.S.
Trial" will describe preliminary findings from a trial evaluating the laser treatment on
postmenopausal women and breast cancer survivors experiencing vaginal health issues. The data
will be presented by Dr. Mickey Karram, Director of Fellowship Program on Female Pelvic
Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, The Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, OH and Dr. Eric Sokol,
Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Stanford University Medical Center.
The multicenter trial assessed the use of CO2 fractional laser therapy on 30 women with vaginal
health issues due to menopause. All of the patients were treated with MonaLisa Touch, which
delivers CO2 laser energy to the vaginal wall to promote vaginal mucosal revitalization and a return
to premenopausal vaginal health. This minimally invasive, painless procedure was performed in
an office setting and required no anesthesia. It was performed in three treatments, each taking
less than five minutes, six weeks apart.
"All 30 patients experienced overwhelmingly positive and immediate results," said Dr. Karram.
"The women showed highly statistically significant improvement in symptoms – including dryness,
pain, itching, painful urination and painful intercourse – after the first treatment. They
experienced no side effects or adverse reactions and showed an escalation of progress with each
subsequent treatment."
Issues of vaginal health are commonly seen in postmenopausal women, breast cancer survivors
and women who have had a hysterectomy. The MonaLisa Touch treatment is particularly well

nearly 46 million women between the ages of 50 and 80, and more than 2.8 million breast cancer

The very first intravaginal laser treatment has been
approved by the FDA, and, at first glance, those three
words — "intravaginal laser treatment" — sound a lot like
what might happen during an alien abduction. But, this is,
in fact, beyond promising news for women suffering from
vaginal atrophy.
Usually brought on following the onset of menopause,
vaginal atrophy is a condition in which a woman's vaginal
walls become thinner and lose some of their natural
moisture. So, while this condition that comes naturally
with age for anywhere between 20% and 45% of
menopausal women, it can make intercourse less
enjoyable and even painful. Enter the treatment known as
MonaLisa Touch

walls and increase blood flow, painlessly. The outcome of
its initial clinical studies are positive, and the main side effects are temporary and relatively minor

Up until now, the most frequently-sought solution to vaginal atrophy has been hormone therapy.
While many consider this option to be less invasive, advocates of vaginal laser treatments argue
that a regimen of hormones only function to counteract the general symptoms of menopause, and
do not take enough of a targeted approach to treat vaginal atrophy as a specific condition.
As of right now, the MonaLisa Touch procedure costs $1,500 in total. Though it's yet to be seen
how American health insurers will integrate this kind of treatment into their plans, a comparison
of this price tag to the potential cash savings in lube might be in order.

treatment has been estrogen replacement, but that has side effects, and breast
cancer survivors cannot take estrogen.

Then she learned of a clinical trial at The

An Italian-built laser device called the Mona Lisa Touch has just
finished testing and will be available this month for patients at
The Christ Hospital. The laser is the first approved by the Food
and Drug Administration to combat vaginal atrophy by, in
effect, rejuvenating the vagina.
The market for such a procedure is huge. When the vagina
becomes dry and less pliable, sex becomes painful and difficult.
The condition also can lead to persistent urinary tract
infections. The standard treatment has been replacement of
the hormone estrogen, in a pill or a cream, but that comes
with side effects. And many women, especially breast cancer
survivors, cannot take estrogen.

“I did have some reservation,” said Elliott, a
Preble County lawyer. “But I felt like this is
hopeful, and there’s a possibility of great
things. I didn’t want to get too excited
because, well, it might not work. Let’s just
see what happens.”

Laser treatment of the vagina, on the other hand, “is really the same concept as plastic surgeons
do with a laser on the face,” said Dr. Mickey Karram, director of urogynecology at The Christ
Hospital.
“It’s a thin-dot laser applied to skin to stimulate the production of collagen. This has nothing to do
with lifting. You’re actually creating a healthier skin, more viable but instead of on the face, it’s in
the vagina.”
What the Italians foundusing a laser
About 15 months ago, Karram said, a friend who is a doctor in Italy invited him to see the results
of his tests with a laser on women with vaginal atrophy.
“I was very skeptical. People have promoted lasers for a variety of things that have never panned
out,” Karram said.
For example, a U.S. laser manufacturer, Alma Lasers of Buffalo Grove, Illinois, markets a similar
device to plastic surgeons as Femilift.
But Karram went to Italy, “spent a few days, saw them treat 10 patients. They had already
published one article in a menopause journal in Europe. I looked at all the data, and I agreed to do
the first U.S. trial.”
The Lindner Research Center at The Christ Hospital paid to bring over the laser machine. A second
U.S. test site was set up at Stanford University. Karram recruited 15 women for this year’s clinical
trial, including Elliott and Sarah Desmond of Fort Thomas, Kentucky.
“I had my visit with my breast cancer surgeon in June,” said Desmond, 65, a retired customer
service agent with Delta Air Lines at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. “I
mentioned to her that everything’s great except my sex life is not good with my husband. It’s very
painful.”
Desmond’s surgeon knew about Karram’s clinical study, and after doing some Internet research on
the Mona Lisa Touch – “it was all in Italian” – Desmond signed up and, “It’s helped my life
tremendously.”
Two patients, having read about the Mona Lisa Touch online, even flew from New York and St.
Louis to participate in the clinical trial at The Christ Hospital. “Of all places,” Karram said, “who
would have thought to come to Cincinnati, Ohio, to rejuvenate your vagina?”
The procedure consists of three three-minute laserings, each six weeks apart. No anesthesia or
preoperative painkiller is needed. Each treatment requires a woman to assume the position
customary for a pelvic exam. A doctor then inserts the laser to resurface the vagina. Because of
the tiny size of the laser, there is no risk of burn.
As in a facial treatment, the laser stimulates the collagen stores, reviving dried skin and improving
condition. The procedure then is done once yearly afterward.

Not a placebo effect, results quickly apparent
Elliott and Desmond said their first treatments were uncomfortable, subsequent treatments less
so. They felt no pain afterward, and they had no downtime. They could not have sexual
intercourse for the first 48 hours after a treatment. But then, it was go time.
“Every time that I would go back in to have my next treatment, I would tell them, you cannot
imagine the improvement,” Elliott said. “I could tell there was more lubrication and more
stretchiness. At first, I thought it was the placebo effect, but after a while, it was undeniable.”
Sex “became back to what it used to be before all the cancer treatment. I was just shocked,” Elliott
said. “I was actually able not only to have sex but to enjoy sex again. It was just the greatest thing
ever, to have something make you feel normal again.”
“After the first treatment,” Desmond said, “the sex was about 90 percent better. Then after the
third, it was 100 percent better. And we’re talking no drugs. It was amazing.”
In December, The Christ Hospital will offer the Mona Lisa Touch as an outpatient procedure.
Karram said the three treatments will cost $1,500. Insurance will not cover the procedure as no
processing code has been established yet.
“When I heard about that, no insurance,” Desmond said, “I said, what about penile implants and
Viagra? They pay for that, don’t they?”

Everyone talks about the hot flashes, the mood swings
and the weight gain, but one of the most disempowering,
the most life changing elements of menopause can be the
death of your sex life … or at least an enjoyable sex life.
While Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT – described to me recently and hilariously as ‘the
same old pregnant mare’s urine stuff that’s been around for decades’ – works for some women, it
isn’t effective for all and is not an option for women with a history of or high risk of developing
breast cancer.
Fractional CO2 laser treatment is a n onsurgical drug-free treatment using the same laser
technology that has been used for over a decade to treat acne and scarring and revitalise ageing
skin, and is now giving post-menopausal women, and their husbands, their sex lives back. While
it’s not available in Geelong yet, local surgeons Ian Holten and Rafael Acosta will be making the

technology – rather charmingly called MonaLisa Touch therapy - available to patients at Australian
Skin Face Body from early in 2015.
After speaking to one patient who was currently undergoing the treatment, and raving about the
results, I was fascinated and wanted to know more, which led to Dr Fariba Behnia- Willison, a
pioneering specialist using the technology to treat the vaginal symptoms of menopause in
Australia. I asked Dr Willison what had led her to the MonaLisa Touch treatment.
“Vulvo-vaginal atrophy has always been an area where it is difficult for medical practitioners to
provide patients with consistent and effective treatment, so I am always looking for new
possibilities and treatment options to help my patients,” she said.
Vulvo-vaginal atrophy is the medical term for a condition that affects more than four in ten
menopausal and post-menopausal women. The drop in hormone levels that occurs during
menopause can result in a thinning and loss of elasticity of the vaginal walls,
the blood supply is reduced and the vaginal walls loses much of their natural lubrication.
The language alone that describes the condition is depressing – there is a lot of ‘loss of’ and
‘reduced’. For women who find the condition yet another unwelcome symptom of menopause,
the reality is that sex becomes nonstimulating, uncomfortable and, for some, unbearably painful.
“I first saw MonaLisa Touch in 2012 at an international conference focusing on urogynaecology.
Initially I was sceptical, but once I read the research and understood what was involved and how it
worked I knew it was something I needed to look into.
“I have been offering MonaLisa Touch in my practice in Adelaide since early 2013 and I have
performed more than 2000 treatments. However, it is only recently that more gynaecologists are
introducing the treatment into their practices. So I expect over the next few months it will become
available in more medical practices across Australia.”
MonaLisa Touch is suitable for women of all ages experiencing symptoms related to vulvo-vaginal
atrophy, including vaginal dryness or itching, urinary urgency and incontinence, burning sensations
and irritations of the vagina, fissuring of the vaginal opening, vaginal laxity, pain during
intercourse. While the symptoms of vulvo-vaginal atrophy are most commonly associated with
menopause, younger women can also experience some or all of the symptoms due to prolonged
use of the Pill, breast cancer, breast-feeding or scarring resulting from childbirth requiring severe
perineal repair.
For women who have or who have had breast cancer, the rate of vaginal atrophy is high – around
60 per cent. And for these women, Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT, that has been one of
few options to treat symptoms simply isn’t an option. Alternatives to HRT that have been available
tend towards non-scented barrier cream and a LOT of lubricant, and there is not a lot about that
that is sexy.
“MonaLisa Touch is certainly suitable for patients who have previously had cervical cancer and
breast cancer. In fact they are very often ideal candidates for the procedure because it is not
recommend that they use HRT and their cancer treatment has often caused early onset of vulvovaginal atrophy,” Dr Willison said.

“Typically the procedure takes around five minutes and for most patients it is painless. No
anaesthesia is required. It is a walk-in walkout procedure that is mostly done in the private
practice of gynaecologists.
“A probe is inserted into the vagina and then slowly withdrawn. As it is withdrawn the doctor
stops every five millimetres and the fractional laser energy is delivered to the vaginal tissue. For
most patients the only sensation is a slight vibration. Following procedure patients can return to
the normal daily routine, although it is recommended to avoid sexual actively for around three
days after the procedure.
“MonaLisa Touch has exceeded my expectations. It is a l ow-risk procedure that is simple to
perform and very well tolerated by patients. And the level of patient satisfaction is very high. If I
have diagnosed the patient to be suitable for a MonaLisa Touch treatment, it is highly unusual for
them not to notice a significant improvement in their symptoms.
Patients will typically have three treatments, four to six weeks apart. Dr Willison also recommends
a follow up treatment every year or so to maintain the improvements experienced from the initial
course of treatments.She said that while no treatment is without risk, the likelihood of
complications following a MonaLisa Touch treatment is very low.
“My experience of no serious or lasting side-effects is similar to that of medical practitioners from
around the world and what is reported in the published research. Tens of thousands of MonaLisa
Touch treatments have been performed around the world and I am not aware of any serious side
effects of any kind. At most patients describe some very mild irritation or warmth after the
treatment that typically lasts only a few hours, and even then these cases are quite rare.”
“While I h ave found MonaLisa Touch to be extremely effective for the treatment of many of the
symptoms of vulvo-vaginal atrophy, and this is backed up by the published studies, it is important
that before having the MonaLisa Touch procedure that patients have a gynaecological
examination to ensure there are no underlying pathologies or other problems that should be
addressed prior to having the treatment.”

Two years ago Adelaide gynaecologist Dr Fariba Behnia-Willison was consulted by a breast cancer

“That was a devastating blow after battling cancer but she had met a nice new, younger man.

“It absolutely broke my heart when she said, and I fully believed her, that unless I could help her
she would kill herself.”
Dr Willison had treated dozens of patients of all ages for what she describes as “the silent
epidemic”: Vaginal Atrophy (VA). Whether as a result of menopause, medical treatments such as

chemotherapy or other health conditions, they suffered not only physical distress but a profound
impact on their intimate relationships, sense of femininity and self-esteem. “I would treat women
who felt obliged to have sex with their husbands or partners even though VA made it a terrible
experience. There were some whose vaginas were torn as a result and they would be in terrible
pain or have infections.
“But it was this particular patient’s impassioned cry for help that set me on a mission to find a
solution.”
Vaginal atrophy and dryness and all its implications is one of the topics being addressed by
Australian and international experts at the AustralAsian Academy of Anti-Ageing Medicine – A5M
– Education’s Holistic Approach to Sexual Health Symposium in Sydney, March 21-22.
It will look at current treatments of vaginal atrophy, including vaginal hormones (estrogens,
testosterone, DHEA) and non-hormonal treatments.
Among these non-hormonal treatments that will be discussed is arguably the biggest
breakthrough ever in the sexual health industry – vaginal rejuvenation laser technology.
Dr Willison’s quest to help her desperate patient resulted in her discovery at an expo of MonaLisa
Touch, a five minute, walk in/walk out CO2 fractional laser treatment that causes minimal, if any,
discomfort.
After a recommended three sessions a month apart, it has shown to render profound changes in
the strength and thickness of vaginal canal tissue and lubrication, making for a healthier vagina
and also facilitating far more comfortable and satisfying sexual relationships.
Developed in Milan, Italy, it is distributed in Australia by High Tech Laser.
Until very recently, hormone supplementation with synthetic or bio-identical oestrogen were the
most viable options to relieve vaginal dryness by strengthening atrophied vaginal walls and
stimulating natural lubrication.
But they aren’t always as effective as desired and many women didn’t welcome the systematic
side effects common with HRT therapies.
Moreover, they are contra-indicated for certain health conditions, including women who have, or
have had breast or other oestrogen-sensitive cancers.
Another of Dr Willison’s patients, Rae, accompanied her to Sydney for a briefing to media and
sexual health professionals late last year about MonaLisa Touch.
Rae, 46, was diagnosed with colon cancer in February 2014. After undergoing surgery and chemo
she was given the all-clear in July and was ready to resume normal life, including her previously
active sexual relationship with her husband.
However, Rae was devastated to discover that intercourse was almost impossible. Her vagina had
dried and atrophied.

“I did a lot of research and heard about Dr Willison’s work,” says Rae. “Within a month of the first
MonaLisa Touch treatment my husband and I were able to start having sex.
“After three treatments – that is, after three months – we were well and truly back on the horse!

Cosmetic vagina surgery that can be done on

After her first child was born six years ago, Kirsten Fagan found exercising a little trickier than
usual.
“I found that when I used to jump or do skipping or the treadmill, I needed to pee all the time. It
was like, I can’t do this for longer than two minutes, I’ve gotta go,” the 36-year-old mum of two
recalls. “I remember thinking, well, I’ll never run like I did before.”
Being a former professional athlete, this was incredibly frustrating for Kirsten – but it’s also a
situation lots of us can relate to. The hormonal changes that pregnancy and menopause cause in a
woman’s body can trigger a range of side-effects, particularly in the vagina. Stress incontinence,
dryness, laxity and irritation are just a few symptoms of vaginal atrophy – the thinning of the

Around half of Australian women will suffer from these symptoms in their lifetime, although not
all of them will bring up the topic with their doctors. And until recently, treatments have been
limited to topical creams and hormone replacement therapy, which aren’t always suitable.
However, Australian clinics are starting to offer a procedure called Mona Lisa Touch, which has
been touted as a major step forward for women’s health. Despite what the name suggests it
doesn’t mean a vagina follows you around the room. No. It’s a laser treatment that
rejuvenates the vagina walls, without using hormones or surgery.
Cosmetic Surgery for Women is the first practice in Melbourne to offer the Mona Lisa Touch. Dr
Malcolm Linsell, the clinic’s plastic surgeon, has already treated about 15 patients ranging in age
from 36 to 66. While he was sceptical at first, Dr Linsell says he’s been surprised by how well the
procedure works. “The feedback we’ve had from several patients is really truly been quite
amazing,” he tells The Glow.
Mona Lisa Touch works by directing beams of laser light into the walls of the vagina, using a
specially designed fractionated carbon dioxide laser that’s inserted inside.

“In the past when laser was used to treat an area, it was really like a little burn. However, now
they’ve fractionated the laser, it means the tiny pinpoints of laser go into the area that’s being
treated,” Dr Linsell explains. “What that means is that the area heals much more quickly and at
the same time gives the benefit that you’re looking for.
”When the laser beam hits the wall, it promotes blood flow into the region and encourages the
cells to produce more collagen. The result is more lubrication, tightness and elasticity in the
vagina, which is what can relieve symptoms like stress incontinence or dryness.
Although mothers and women of menopause age benefit greatly from the treatment, it’s not
restricted to them. Younger, pre-motherhood women can also suffer from lack of lubrication,
minor stress incontinence and pain during sex. Dr Linsell says Mona Lisa Touch is especially helpful
for women who encounter the latter, because it can gradually treat the constricted areas of their
vagina wall which are problematic.
“After two or three treatments we’ve been able to reach the full length of the wall so the laser
beam can access the full areas of the vagina, which means when they’ve been having intercourse
they can have full penetration whereas beforehand they couldn’t,” he says.
“I had one of my patients say, ‘This has just changed our lives – previously we couldn’t have sexual
intercourse and now we can’. I love that. It’s incredibly fulfilling.”

Although this process sounds like it could be really time consuming, the treatment only takes
around 10-15 minutes each time, with no anaesthetic needed. Even better, it’s basically pain-free
and requires no downtime.

“I was pretty nervous the first time I went. I was like, oh my gosh, how much people will be
looking? What do I do? Have I shaved?” recall Kirsten Fagan, who took part in a trial of the
procedure at Dr Linsell’s recommendation.
“It was fine. There was no pain. It sounds crazy, but it felt like if you put your hand against a
microwave – that vibration … [Afterwards] it was almost as if you’d been to a waxer – you knew
something had occurred but it wasn’t uncomfortable.”
Kirsten says her results were immediate – she no longer struggles with urgently needing a
bathroom only minutes into exercise. “It’s been fantastic – I’m back up to running for 30 minutes.
I’ve found it great for my general well being and feeling good about myself.”
Treatment varies from one patient to another, but generally women will undergo three
treatments of Mona Lisa Touch, each a month apart – although Dr Linsell says having follow-up
treatments every six to 12 months can produce even better results. Each treatment costs around
$1000.
Although the treatment is relatively new in Australia, it could really take off in coming months if
the growing interest around it is anything to go by.
“I genuinely believe this is going to be enormous,” Dr Linsell says. “I see an increasing
demographic of women who are post-pregnancy, and say, ‘I want to be back to where I was
before I had my children. I love my kids dearly but I want me back and now’s the time for me’.”

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — These days, it’s not just your nose or eyes that can be “improved” with
cosmetic surgery. Now women can opt to have more attractive or even designer vaginas.
In fact, vaginal rejuvenation is a multi-million ringgit industry that has expanded in the last five
years due to the emergence of non-surgical procedures like Fractional CO2 laser, surgical threads
and dermal fillers.
But what is an attractive vagina? As described by aesthetic physicians, it is tight and light-skinned
with symmetrical inner labia sheared to tiny strips of skin that cannot be seen while standing,
almost akin to a Barbie doll.
Cosmetic vaginal surgery is becoming increasingly popular among middle-class women in Malaysia
who desire tighter, fairer and neater genitalia to boost their self-confidence and sexual
satisfaction.
“For most women, after giving birth or having many sexual partners, your body is not able to
repair the looseness of the vagina,” cosmetic surgeon Dr Alice Prethima Michael told The Malay
Mail Online in a recent interview.
“It loses the folds and becomes shortened,” she added. “In most cases, men and women lose
sensation during sexual intercourse.”

According to aesthetic physicians, vaginal rejuvenation can be done through surgical or noninvasive laser procedures, with the former usually costing between RM12,000 and RM15,000,
while the latter can be anything from RM6,000 to RM10,000.
Vaginal rejuvenation includes designer vaginoplasty (plumping the labia majora, or outer lips, and
trimming the labia minora, also called inner lips), vaginal tightening (strengthening the tissue of
the vagina), clitoralplasty (snipping off the excess skin of the clitoris), hymenoplasty (restoring the
hymen), and G-spot rejuvenation (making the G-spot more prominent).
Dr Alice said that the number of patients seeking cosmetic vaginal surgeries has jumped five times
since she opened her clinic in 1999.
Back then she had about 10 to 12 patients a year who wanted vaginal rejuvenation. Today, the
number of patients who opt for laser vaginal rejuvenation has multiplied by 10 to a current
average of 20 cases a month.
The aesthetic physician noted that most of her patients are middle-class and upper middle-class
women, ranging from working professionals to socialites, as well as housewives. About five per
cent of her patients are foreigners from the UK, US, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong who fly in
specially to see her.
Women who typically go for designer vagina surgeries or non-surgical procedures are between 25
and 55 years, with the majority comprising women who have had children or are going through
menopause, or even women who are about to get married.
Ageing and childbirth result in laxer muscles of the vagina, and thinner and darker outer labia,
while menopause creates dryness and reduces sexual gratification.
Young women, who have yet to give birth, want to reconstruct their vaginas to “feel more firm
and tighter”, said Dr Alice.
Dr Alice’s clinic, which also offers other cosmetic procedures, is located in the affluent
neighbourhood of Bangsar here and is watched over by a security guard who records visitors’
particulars.
Past security, patients wait in a cool, comfortable, softly-lit room, surrounded with posters
featuring before and after pictures of slimmed bellies and wrinkle-free faces. The vagina, it seems,
is simply just another body part to beautify.
Dr Chin Shih Choon, the president of the Malaysian Society of Aesthetic Medicine (MSAM), told
The Malay Mail Online: “Among practitioners, we find that it’s a trend that’s become more
popular because of more non-invasive procedures.
In the past, they used surgical procedures to tighten vaginas.” He added that women also whiten
the area surrounding their genitalia through peels, laser and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) stem cell
injections.
“They want to feel better, they want to look better, and they want to have a better sex life at the
same time,” said Dr Chin. “The vagina is another part of the body to rejuvenate.”

Unlike cosmetic surgery on one’s face, the results of a vaginal rejuvenation are not visible to the
public but the aesthetic physician said: “You show it to your sexual partner. It’s for selfconfidence.”
Aesthetic physician Dr Sutina Nordin, who provides laser procedures to enhance the vagina, said
that some women want to take care of their vaginas the same way that they care for their skin.
“If you want to take care of your facial skin, you use laser to get new skin cells,” Dr Sutina told The
Malay Mail Online in a recent interview. “It’s the same way with the vagina.”
She stressed that ageing was a “disease”. “Beautify your face; don’t forget to beautify your
genitals.”
Dr Sutina, who started her aesthetic practice in 2008, said that most of her patients are Malay
women who are usually brought in to her clinic by their husbands. Some of the men even make
appointments on their wives’ behalf.
“I do see more Malay women, probably because the Malay ethnic group tends to have more
children,” she said. “With time, women become less sensitive and with ageing, it causes the
(vaginal) mucosa to thin. When they’re uncomfortable, they stiffen up. So the men become
uncomfortable.”
Dr Sutina added that women in their 20s opt for whitening procedures for their vaginas to show
off their bikinis. “The skin in the inner thigh tends to get darker, so you want it to get an even
tone.”

UK news portal MailOnline reported in July last year about an animated documentary titled
“Centrefold”, directed by British filmmaker Ellie Land, which showed women talking about their
reasons for undergoing labiaplasty to reduce the size of their inner labia.
One said that she felt like a “freak” because of her long labia, while another said she was worried
her labia is “long, dark, disgusting, shrivelled-up.” The women also said that they could never find
women in porn magazines with similar labia as theirs.

A atrofia é causada pela deficiência do

segurança absoluta.
A ginecologista Vera Lucia da Cruz, professora da Faculdade de Medicina do ABC, começou a usar
o laser em sua clínica privada e afirma que o tratamento é indolor e não traz desconforto.
Segundo ela, podem ser necessárias até três sessões por ano.
Uma de suas pacientes, que não quis se identificar, disse ter ficado satisfeita. Ela conta não ter
sentido nenhum incômodo. "Senti como se algo estivesse girando, mas foi mais rápido e menos
desconfortável do que o exame de Papanicolaou".
Com 60 anos e vida sexual ativa, ela disse ter notado uma melhora grande na relação sexual.
"Passei a sentir mais prazer, levantou minha autoestima. Antes era dolorido, incomodava, tinha
deixado de ser agradável."
Aprovado pela Anvisa no ano passado, o laser Monalisa Touch deve ser alvo de dois estudos na
Faculdade de Medicina do ABC, sob a coordenação da professora Vera Lucia da Cruz.
Um deles pretende comparar o tratamento tradicional (cremes à base de estrogênio) com o novo
laser. O outro vai testar o laser em mulheres jovens que entraram na menopausa precocemente,
depois de terem sido submetidas a tratamentos
contra o câncer.
Segundo César Fernandes, presidente da Sogesp (Associação de Obstetrícia e Ginecologia do
Estado de São Paulo), a descrição e os efeitos do tratamento com laser têm fundamento, mas são
necessários mais estudos.
"Gostaria de ver pesquisas que reforçassem as evidências, com número maior de pacientes,
comparação entre o tratamento convencional e resultados de eficácia e segurança a longo prazo",
afirma.
Ele acredita que o laser não vai substituir os cremes e nem se tornar a primeira opção de
tratamento, mas poderia ser uma terapia complementar.
O valor de cada aplicação (R$ 2.500), porém, deve fazer com que essa seja uma alternativa para
poucas.

“Infelizmente, a atrofia vaginal é uma condição subestimada e um tabu que pode trazer
sofrimento. É importante que as mulheres procurem ajuda médica e saibam das opções de
tratamento”, disse a ginecologista Vera Lucia da Cruz, professora da Faculdade de Medicina do
ABC, que iniciou o primeiro estudo clínico da técnica no Brasil.
Segundo o fabricante, a aplicação não dura mais que 15 minutos e é indolor, ocorrendo apenas
uma leve sensação de calor. É contraindicada para mulheres grávidas, que tenham doenças
sexualmente transmissíveis ou que apresentem mudanças de citologia no último Papanicolau,
inflamações da vulva ou doenças relacionadas à coagulação sanguínea.
Para o coordenador científico da Academia Internacional de Ginecologia Cosmética, o
dermatologista italiano Nicola Zerbinati, que fez parte do Comitê Científico de análise do novo
projeto, os resultados significam um retardo no relógio biológico da mulher em torno de 15 a 20
anos.
Confira abaixo entrevista com a ginecologista Vera Lucia e tire suas dúvidas sobre atrofia vaginal e

Terra - A atrofia vaginal traz que problemas à saúde da mulher?
Vera Lucia da Cruz – Ressecamento vaginal, perda da elasticidade, ardor, aumento de infecções
vaginais, disúria (dor ao urinar), noctúria (urgência de urinar à noite), dispareunia (dor no ato
sexual), sangramentos em casos acentuados e autoestima prejudicada.
Terra - Há estimativas de quantas mulheres sofrem de atrofia vaginal?
VLC - De acordo com publicações científicas, mais de 50% das mulheres do grupo estudado após
três anos da menopausa apresentam atrofia vaginal.
Terra - A atrofia vaginal é exclusiva da menopausa?
VLC - Na maioria dos casos, é decorrente da queda hormonal estrogênica passados os anos da
menopausa, mas pode-se encontrá-la em alguns casos de tratamentos radioterápicos e
medicamentosos, por exemplo.
Terra - Normalmente, qual é o tratamento indicado para a atrofia vaginal?
VLC - O tratamento até hoje descrito para atrofia vaginal é a terapia hormonal, mas nem todas as
mulheres podem fazer uso do medicamento. Pacientes com riscos de cânceres ginecológicos e
doenças sistêmicas crônicas, por exemplo, apresentam contra indicações para a terapia hormonal.
Terra - Há maneiras de prevenir a atrofia vaginal?
VLC - Observa-se que vida sexual ativa e frequente, por estimulação e atrito da parede vaginal,
pode retardar a atrofia vaginal, mas isso não vai impedir que, com o avançar da idade, o quadro se
instale gradativamente.
Terra - Você iniciou o primeiro estudo clínico no Brasil do tratamento a laser da atrofia vaginal.
Quais foram os resultados?
VLC - Iniciei o tratamento clínico há três meses. Doze mulheres receberam as aplicações de laser
vaginal e apontaram melhora dos sintomas decorrentes da atrofia vaginal.

Terra - No seu estudo, foi encontrado algum resultado adverso?
VLC - Não, a resposta clínica esperada superou expectativas nos tratamentos realizados. Há, no
entanto, a necessidade de estudos complementares para comprovar a segurança e a eficácia da
técnica. Isso acontece para qualquer novo tratamento que entra em nosso País no ramo da
medicina.
Terra - Como o laser age para trazer tais benefícios às mulheres?
VLC - O laser age na lâmina própria da parede vaginal (corresponde à derme da nossa pele),

Causada pela queda progressiva do nível do hormônio estrógeno, a atrofia vaginal faz com que a mucosa da
vagina fique mais fina e com pouca lubrificação, tornando a atividade sexual insatisfatória, já que ocorre
queimação, dor e desconforto durante a relação. Apesar de acometer mais de 40% das mulheres no
climatério, somente 25% delas, segundo pesquisa da Sociedade Norte-Americana de Menopausa, se

"Método substitui tratamento hormonal" - Para o coordenador científico da Academia Internacional de
Ginecologia Cosmética e dermatologista italiano Nicola Zerbinati, que fez parte do Comitê Científico de
análise do novo projeto da Deka, os resultados do Monalisa Touch significam um retardo no relógio
biológico da mulher em cerca de 15/20 anos. "Usamos todo o conhecimento do laser aplicado em métodos
de antienvelhecimento da pele para desenvolver algo específico para a atrofia vaginal. O método substitui
os tradicionais tratamentos com hormônios", afirma o renomado dermatologista, que vem ao Brasil em
abril para um workshop de lançamento do método com médicos.
"Devolvemos qualidade de vida e autoestima para as mulheres na medida em que restauramos a fisiologia
da vagina. E como o laser também proporciona mudança de aspecto físico, acaba implicando em
clareamento e rejuvenescimento do tecido vaginal, ou seja, essas melhorias estéticas são consequências do
procedimento", complementa Zerbinati.
Pesquisa de análise laboratorial do método, coordenada pelo professor de Histologia e Embriologia da
Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Pavia, Alberto Calligaro, constatou a restauração do tecido
vaginal após a aplicação do novo laser.
"Conseguimos comprovar que esse tipo de laser não só estimula a produção de colágeno, devolvendo
espessura à pele por meio da multiplicação celular, como melhora a frouxidão na parede vaginal.
Indiretamente ainda reduz o ressecamento do órgão feminino, pois aumenta a atividade dos fibroblastos,
melhorando a vascularização e o nível de hidratação da mucosa", explica.
Pesquisa aponta redução de 74% no ressecamento - Outro estudo clínico, parceria do San Raffaele Hospital,
em Milão, com a Universidade da Pavia, ambos na Itália, com 50 mulheres um mês após as aplicações do
laser, também demonstrou resultados otimistas, como reduções de 74.16% no ressecamento vaginal,
65,39% em irritações, 63,53% na dor durante a relação e 54,22% na perda de elasticidade. Os mesmos
indícios também foram relatados num levantamento com 93 pacientes submetidas ao Monalisa Touch, na
Universidade de Mendonza, na Argentina, e publicada no American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery.
A sexualidade após a menopausa é considerada um problema para 4 entre 10 mulheres, de acordo com
pesquisa com mais de 4 mil casais liderada pela DEKA e apresentada em congresso europeu no ano
passado. Mais de 50% das entrevistadas não relatam suas queixas aos parceiros, e se desabafam, após com
muita dificuldade, atesta o mesmo estudo.

una amplia demanda del número de mujeres en una franja de edad de entre 30 y 60 años que
demandan soluciones para mejorar la estética y funcionalidad de la zona vulvo-vaginal.
La doctora explica que, dentro de la medicina ginecológica, existe una subespecialidad
denominada ginecología estética, que permite mejorar la funcionalidad, la vida sexual y la estética

El doctor Juan José Escribano, jefe de la Unidad de Ginecoestética del Instituto Médico Láser (IML),
desvela que solo el 15 % de las mujeres que sufren incontinencia urinaria han preguntado alguna
vez a su ginecólogo sobre una posible solución.
Dentro de la medicina ginecológica existe una subespecialidad denominada ginecología estética,
que permite mejorar la funcionalidad, la vida sexual y la estética de las zonas íntimas femeninas

Con el nombre de "tratamientos MonaLisa Touch", el láser Smart Xide 2 V2 es el que estos

Estética vaginal
La estética de esta zona íntima es una preocupación para muchas mujeres que no dudan en

El fin de los problemas en la cama: el láser que

Millones de mujeres de mediana y avanzada edad padecen un problema médico conocido como
atrofia vaginal que les impide poder disfrutar con normalidad de su vida sexual. Como
consecuencia de la menopausia, las paredes de la vagina se secan y esto se traduce en molestias
físicas al practicar sexo. Como explica Samantha Allen en The Daily Beast,"hace que las
relaciones sexuales sean dolorosas y, a menudo, también interfiere con la función urinaria".
Hasta ahora el problema se intentaba paliar con los mismos tratamientos hormonales que se usan
para controlar los síntomas de la menopausia basados en aumentar los niveles de estrógenos. Sin

accidente cerebrovascular o ciertas formas de enfermedad cardíaca.

La menopausia, el parto o, simplemente, el
paso de los años pueden provocar alteraciones
en la zona vulvo-vaginal que tienen
consecuencias que van más allá de la mera
estética. Hasta ahora, pocas mujeres se
atrevían a abordar el tema con su médico.
Valga de ejemplo que menos del 25% de las
que padece atrofia vaginal (una de las
problemáticas más frecuentes durante la
menopausia por el descenso de estrógenos) lo
consulta con su ginecólogo. Pero el reciente
aumento de la demanda de intervenciones
ginecoestéticas demuestra que algo está
cambiando. La doctora Josefina Royo,
codirectora del Instituto Médico Láser (IML),
confirma el incremento de pacientes que
acuden a su clínica para informarse sobre esta
opción: "Han crecido las consultas, aunque la
demanda es tímida en comparación con otros
países como Italia o Estados Unidos. En este
último, al ir a un cirujano plástico te proponen
explorar la zona genital para ver qué se puede
mejorar".

Royo explica que existen dos tipos de correcciones: las que tienen fines puramente estéticos y las
funcionales. Entre las primeras, la más demandada, con diferencia, es la ninfoplastia o reducción
de los labios menores mediante láser en una sola sesión. "No estamos ante un problema de salud,
ni una malformación, de hecho un 25% de las mujeres lo presenta, pero a muchas les incomoda
mostrarlo", apunta. En este grupo se engloban también la reconstrucción del himen o la
lipoescultura (o lipotransferencia, según se desee un efecto más plano o redondeado) del monte
de venus, que tienen tintes de origen cultural.
Pero la aplicación más interesante de esta disciplina de la medicina estética es la relacionada con
las afecciones que repercuten en la calidad de vida, tanto a nivel funcional como sexual. En el IML
han diseñado los tratamientos MonaLisa Touch, realizados con láser de CO2, para solucionar tres
de los problemas más habituales: la atrofia vaginal, la hiperlaxitud (común tras partos múltiples o

Millones de mujeres de mediana y avanzada edad padecen un problema médico conocido como
atrofia vaginal que les impide poder disfrutar con normalidad de su vida sexual. Como
consecuencia de la menopausia, las paredes de la vagina se secan y esto se traduce en molestias
físicas al practicar sexo. Como explica Samantha Allen en The Daily Beast, “hace que las relaciones
sexuales sean dolorosas y, a menudo, también interfiere con la función urinaria”.
Hasta ahora el problema se intentaba paliar con los mismos tratamientos hormonales que se usan
para controlar los síntomas de la menopausia basados en aumentar los niveles de estrógenos. Sin
embargo, estas terapias no son aptas para mujeres con cáncer de mama, antecedentes de
accidente cerebrovascular o ciertas formas de enfermedad cardíaca.
Pero parece que la evolución de la medicina láser podría haber encontrado la solución que
cambiará la vida de todas estas mujeres: Mona Lisa Touch. Un tratamiento láser intravaginal

recientemente aprobado por la Food and Drug Administration estadounidense –y previamente
testado en otros centros médicos europeos– que estimula la producción de colágeno dentro de la
vagina de tal forma que se restaura la mucosa vaginal y se rehidratan las paredes vaginales.
La aparición de este láser, que todavía está en fase de pruebas, ha reabierto el debate en EEUU,
donde se plantean hasta qué punto las aseguradoras médicas deberían cubrir los gastos de este
tratamiento –que tiene un coste de alrededor de 1.500 dólares– igual que financian otros
masculinos como el suministro de viagra o los implantes de pene.
Una solución sin tratamientos hormonales
Al tratarse de un tratamiento dermatológico con tecnología láser no requiere de anestesia y
apenas tiene efectos secundarios que no sobrepasan “un poco de enrojecimiento o hinchazón
durante uno o dos días”, explica Allen.
Gracias a que su aplicación se dirige directamente a la vagina, permite evitar los tratamientos
hormonales cuyas alteraciones en el carácter y estado de ánimo –junto con otras de tipo físico
como aumentar de peso– suponen un martirio para millones de mujeres.
Muchas mujeres no acuden al especialista porque consideran que es un problema propio de la menopausia.
La atrofia vaginal: un problema global
La Sociedad Norteamericana de Menopausia (NAMS) estima que entre el 20% y el 45% de las
mujeres de mediana y avanzada edad experimentan síntomas relacionados con la atrofia vaginal.
En nuestro país, según datos de la Asociación Española para el Estudio de la Menopausia (AEEM),
se calcula que la padecen alrededor de cuatro millones de españolas.
Un problema a nivel mundial que se traduce en un mercado potencial de millones de mujeres y al
que la ciencia parece haber dado solución. Sin embargo, los médicos advierten que la mayor parte
de las mujeres que la padecen no acuden al especialista ni buscan soluciones.

El láser se presenta como una alternativa eficaz, sencilla e indolora, a tratamientos
tradicionales como los ejercicios de Kegel o determinados procedimientos quirúrgicos.
La atrofia vaginal, la hipertrofia de labios menores o la incontinencia urinaria son problemas que
afectan a un número muy elevado de mujeres. Sin embargo, apenas se habla de estas afecciones,
pese a que pueden tener importantes repercusiones tanto en la calidad de vida, como a nivel
funcional y sexual.
“Los problemas más frecuentes relacionados con la zona vulvo-vaginal son la atrofia vaginal y la
hipertrofia de los labios menores”. La primera tiene su origen en el brusco descenso de
estrógenos que se produce en la menopausia, afectando a la elasticidad y lubricación de la mucosa
en las paredes vaginales.
La hipertrofia de los labios menores es un problema que puede atribuirse a distintos factores, y
que conlleva un importante componente estético-psicológico en las mujeres que lo padecen.
Pese a los efectos que estas alteraciones tienen en la vida femenina, se da la circunstancia de ser
un tema sobre el que apenas se habla. En el caso de las mujeres, por un relativo pudor. Y en el de
los ginecólogos, porque en muchas ocasiones no preguntan a sus pacientes ni se les da
importancia que tienen, al no tratarse de patologías en el sentido estricto del término”, explica el
Dr. Juan José Escribano, Jefe de la Unidad de Ginecoestética de Instituto Médico Láser (IML).
Lo mismo ocurre con otros problemas relacionados con la zona vulvo-vaginal. Así, por ejemplo,
sólo el 15% de las mujeres que sufren incontinencia urinaria han preguntado alguna vez a su
ginecólogo sobre una posible solución.

Afortunadamente, esta situación está

mujeres
menopáusicas
presentan
problemas derivados de esta atrofia, que

En el 25-50% de las mujeres, esta atrofia
comienza a manifestarse a los 4-5 años de
la menopausia ya implantada y está
asociada a síntomas como la sequedad o
el dolor durante las relaciones sexuales.
Estudios realizados al respecto, han
puesto de manifiesto que menos del 25% de las mujeres consultan a su ginecólogo este problema
y que el 70% manifiesta un desinterés por parte de su médico hacia estos síntomas.
Se sabe que la atrofia vulvo-vaginal dificulta las relaciones de pareja en mujeres a partir de los
48-50 años, ya que esta alteración suele acompañarse de una laxitud muscular con falta de
tumescencia en los genitales externos durante la fase de excitación, lo que disminuye la

El brusco descenso de los estrógenos durante la menopausia causa con frecuencia un

Prolapso genital
La dilatación de los músculos que integran el suelo pévico pude originar el descenso de la vagina e

los esfuerzos. Se manifiesta con una sensación de peso o mayor volumen en la zona genital. Si este
descenso es anterior, se denomina cistolecele y, si es posterior, se llama rectocele.

Cirugía de los labios menores
Cuando los labios menores sobresalen de los mayores, excediendo los 2,5 cm de su proporción
estándar, puede resultar incómoda la ropa ajustada y molesta, la práctica de deportes como
montar a caballo, bicicleta etc. La excesiva exposición de esta porción vulvar, puede coartar a la
mujer en su expresión estética y sexual.

Aumento del punto G
Esta zona mitificada, difícilmente localizable a menudo es una pequeñ protuberancia dotad de una
densa inervación, que está ubicada detrás del hueso púbico, en la cara anterior de la vagina.
Solución IML: la infiltración de grasa autóloga o ácido hialurónico, permite una mayor proyección
de este punto. Gracias a esta técnica, aumenta la sensibilidad y el estímulo al roce.
Blanqueamiento anal y genital
Solución IML: la pigmentación clara de toda la región es un valor estético cada vez más en alza. El
tratamiento de las capas superficiales mediante el empleo del láser en modo fraccional permite el
aclaramiento de la piel eliminando el acúmulo de pigmento.
Hipertrofia de clítoris
El clítoris puede presentar un exceso de tamaño o encontrarse demasiado protegido por la

Succede e per tutte noi arriva donne- chi prima, chi dopo, si trova a fare i conti con la menopausa

MONNALISA Touch è una macchina laser, rivoluzionaria per almeno due motivi. Primo: propone
una terapia non invasiva in un campo dove finora esistevano solo cure ormonali e quindi
farmacologiche. Secondo: interviene su una patologia che colpisce buona parte delle donne in
menopausa, ovvero l'atrofia vaginale. Monnalisa Touch rinnova la tradizione dell'industria
fiorentina nel campo dei laser medicali, nasce nell'orbita di un leader in questo campo — il gruppo
El.En che è quotato in Borsa — ed è opera di una sua controllata, Deka, sede a Calenzano, che
dalla nuova macchina si aspetta grandi cose. «Acceleriamo nell'export, andiamo di corsa perché la
concorrenza si sta muovendo — spiega Lapo Cirri, manager di Deka — Abbiamo tentato di blindare
Monnalisa Touch con tutti i brevetti possibili, c'è il rischio che venga imitata».
Dopo appena un anno dall'inizio della commercializzazione, le vendite di Monnalisa Touch
rappresentavano già una voce importante del bilancio di Deka e la sperimentazione in una trentina
di centri clinici universitari ha dato ottimi risultati. «Nel 2013 il nostro fatturato ha fatto un balzo
del 20% a quota 30 milioni di euro, grazie anche a Monnalisa Touch da cui è arrivato il 15% dei
ricavi» spiega Cirri, che è anche uno dei due soci di minoranza (l'altro è Cesare Paolini) di Deka, che
per l'85% è di El.En. «La prospettiva è di crescere e di portare al 20-25% la quota di fatturato
assicurata dalla vendita di Monnalisa Touch ». Che costa 70.000 euro.
Sperimentata al San Raffaele di Milano, messa in commercio nell'ottobre 2012, della macchina si
sono già dotati una trentina di presidi in Italia, tra cui la ginecologia dell'Azienda universitaria
ospedaliera di Careggi e la nuova Villa Donatello, l'Istituto europeo di oncologia a Milano,
l'ospedale di Stato di San Marino, centri a Roma, Napoli e Palermo. Altri 200 laser Monnalisa
Touch sono stati venduti in appena sei mesi all'estero, da dove Deka ricava l'85% del fatturato,
soprattutto in Giappone, ma anche in molti altri Paesi, da quelli sudamericani alla Russia, dalla
Francia alla Turchia. «Una particolarità di Monnalisa Touch — spiega Cirri — è che, alternando gli
scanner, può essere utilizzata per altre funzioni terapeutiche come l'eliminazione delle rughe e il
ringiovanimento cutaneo. E siccome, a differenza che in Italia, in certi Paesi esteri ci sono presidi
clinici dove il laser viene impiegato per diverse specialità, le prospettive di sviluppo all'estero sono
alte».

Frakcijska CO2 laserska fototerapija je nova i jedinstvena metoda obnavljanja tkiva

Ginekološko područje vrlo je osjetljivo na promjene razine estrogena, s brojnim posljedicama koje
izravno utječu na kvalitetu života žene, prije svega u postmenopauzi, ali i tijekom reprodukcijske
faze, osobito nakon dugotrajne primjene oralnih kontraceptiva ili porođaja. Uz to, oštećenja

planus i simpleks) i/ili problemi u vidu vulvodinije (bolova u vanjskim spolnim organima žene).

elastičnosti vaginalne mukoze i bolnost prilikom spolnog odnosa.
Te probleme i pacijentice i liječnici često ignoriraju, svrstavajući ih u neželjene pojave prirodnog
procesa starenja. Postoje i brojne sumnje, ali i nesigurnost u pogledu tradicionalnog liječenja i
uporabe kirurških i/ili farmakoloških postupaka, koji su često preinvazivni, s prevelikim rizicima ili
imaju previše neželjenih učinaka.
Velik broj pacijentica različita uzrasta zainteresirano je za poboljšanje vaginalne funkcije. Iako

Есть в жизни женщины проблемы, которыми неудобно делиться ни с близкими

Гинекологи называют целый ряд причин атрофического вагинита, разнообразие которых
удивляет: это эндометриоз, менопауза, недавние роды, инфекция мочевых путей и
влагалища, генитальный герпес. Кроме того, возникновению атрофического вагинита

эстрогенов, который, увы, в последнее время всё чаще встречается у женщин уже в 37-40
лет, хотя физиологически характерен для постменопаузы. Все эти состояния влияют на

Аполихина, доктор медицинских наук, руководитель гинекологического отделения

гинекологии и перинатологии им. Кулакова. – Интимная жизнь женщины начинает страдать
сразу после родов, особенно при поднятии тяжести в первые недели после родов, когда
мышцы тазового дна не пришли полностью в тонус. А это, увы, исключить почти
невозможно. Ведь молодая мама вынуждена поднимать на руки малыша и тяжелую
коляску, не думая о неприятных последствиях для себя.
Эти же жалобы появляются у женщин с дисплазией соединительной ткани (подсказка, что
именно в ней источник проблем – варикозное расширение вен, близорукость). Но чаще
всего возрастные изменения тканей приходит вместе с наступившим дефицитом эстрогенов

у женщин 37-40 лет, характерным для постменопаузы. И каждая третья женщина
сталкивается с опущением органов таза после 40 лет».
Этим деликатным вопросам уделяли внимание еще в прошлые века. Так, например, были
попытки применять электрошок и радиотерапию, пересаживать яичники, вводить инъекции
с экстрактами яичников животных и препаратами из плаценты. Современная медицина с
этой целью использует негормональные средства на основе фитоэстрогенов (красный
клевер, соя), заместительную гормональную терапию (ЗГТ) и нанесение эстрогенов прямо на
зоны интимной сферы.
Но сегодня появилась новая технология для возвращения женщине сексуальных ощущений.
Новейший метод вагинального омоложения – процедура MonaLiza Touch. Альберто
Каллигаро, профессор гистологии и эмбриологии из Италии, рассказывает, как происходит
манипуляция. «Специальную насадку вводят во влагалище. Луч лазера через сканер

Случается, что женщины 20-30 лет обращаются к врачам с жалобами на то, что нижнее белье
врезается в слишком крупные и большие половые губы. Они трутся об одежду, ощущается
дискомфорт при ходьбе. Эту проблему тоже позволяет решить методика MonaLiza Touch.

Un dépistage plus fiable pour le cancer du sein
La mammographie par tomosynthèse (dite en 3D), déjà largement utilisée, sera bientôt la norme.
Pour les patientes, rien ne change ou presque. Il faut juste rester en position quelques secondes
de plus. Pour les radiologues, en revanche, l’image est beaucoup plus claire et précise. Les
spécialistes peuvent ainsi mieux voir des zones parfois masquées ou floues. Selon une étude
réalisée sur près d’un demi-million de femmes*, cette technique permet de déceler les cancers à
des stades très précoces. Autre bon point, elle entraîne moins de diagnostics incertains que les
radios traditionnelles, donc moins d’examens complémentaires… et moins d’angoisse.

encore là, les médecins s’appuient désormais de plus en plus sur la signature génomique de la
tumeur pour soigner, entre autres, les cancers du sein. Celle-ci permet de mieux évaluer les
risques de rechute ainsi que la nécessité et les doses d’une éventuelle chimiothérapie. Seul bémol,
mais de taille, cet examen (réalisé sur les tissus prélevés sur la tumeur) est cher et très rarement
pris en charge par la Sécurité sociale.Pour l’instant…
Un laser pour pallier le manque d’hormones
Une nouvelle solution pour certaines femmes ménopausées qui ne prennent pas de traitement
hormonal de substitution, ou chez celles ayant eu un cancer du sein.« Le manque d’œstrogènes
rend la muqueuse vaginale très fine, entraînant un manque de lubrification et une perte
d’élasticité. Les rapports sexuels peuvent devenir très douloureux », explique le Dr David Elia,
gynécologue. Lorsque les méthodes conventionnelles ne suffisent pas, le laser MonaLisa Touch,
qui arrive progressivement en France, stimule la production de collagène et permet la
régénération des tissus. En trois séances environ (sans anesthésie mais sans douleur), le vagin
devient plus réactif et retrouve de la souplesse. Les problèmes urinaires sont également moins

Un boosteur de radiothérapie
Grâce à des nanoparticules qui se fixent sur la tumeur, le NanoXray multiplie par 9 l’efficacité des

mal pendant les rapports
sexuels, que puis-je faire ?

Quand la ménopause s’installe, un vagin moins tonique et une muqueuse qui s’assèche sont assez
fréquents. Il y a aussi parfois un relâchement gênant des parois. Le désir et le plaisir sexuels
peuvent être fortement altérés. Voici les réponses du Dr David Elia, gynécologue.
Sécheresse vaginale, rapports sexuels plus difficiles, atrophie vaginale, perte où baisse du désir, du
plaisir sexuel… les femmes ménopausées peuvent souffrir de véritables problèmes au niveau du
vagin. Un faible pourcentage de femmes en parle, mais en réalité, beaucoup sont concernées. Et
ce d’autant plus que le traitement hormonal de la ménopause (THM) est aujourd’hui peu prescrit
(alors que ce traitement a l’avantage d’éviter – entre autres – ces types de problèmes).
Heureusement, les moyens thérapeutiques alternatifs aujourd’hui proposés sont assez nombreux.
D'autres solutions...
Contre la sécheresse vaginale, la femme peut utiliser un lubrifiant (avant un rapport sexuel). Le
médecin peut aussi prescrire des ovules à base d’hormones. Mais en réalité, peu de femmes
adoptent cette solution car elles ne la trouvent pas pratique.
Trois traitements sont alors possibles pour retrouver alors la "jeunesse" de son vagin :
1/ La rééducation du périnée peut être utile pour muscler cette région, et permet de lutter contre
l’incontinence urinaire: cela se fait chez le kiné ou la sage- femme (remboursé la Sécutité sociale).

2/ Les injections d’acide hyaluronique
Depuis quelques années, ce traitement est proposé : il consiste à injecter de l’acide hyaluronique
dans la paroi du vagin. L’acide hyaluronique est une substance normalement présente dans les
tissus de l’organisme.
> Le médecin peut en injecter dans la paroi postérieure du vagin et vers le bas, permettant ainsi de
resserrer la partie basse du vagin (anneau vaginal).
> Il peut aussi en injecter dans la partie antérieure vers ce qu’on appelle communément le point G.
Cela permet de « regonfler » cette zone connue pour jouer un rôle important dans l’orgasme
vaginal.
L’acide hyaluronique a aussi pour effet de réhydrater la paroi vaginale et de lui redonner de la
souplesse. Les femmes souffrant d’un “vagin trop large” peuvent aussi le rétrécir ainsi sans avoir
recours à la chirurgie. Le coût des ces soins est variable selon le nombre de séances non
remboursées par la Sécuité sociale (400 à 1200€). Les infiltrations doivent être renouvelées
environ tous les 8 à 12 mois.
3/ Le laser au CO2
Autre nouvelle technique possible : l’utilisation du laser CO2 sur toute la paroi vaginale.
Le but est de régénérer localement les tissus élastiques, collagènes et conjonctifs et de multiplier
les petits vaisseaux qui vont alors régénérer l’hydratation de la muqueuse.
Au final, on observe le plus souvent une baisse de la sécheresse vaginale et la tonification du
vagin.
Une à trois séances sont généralement nécessaires. Chaque séance coûte environ 300 à 400 euros,
non remboursée par l’Assurance maladie. Une fois l’effet obtenu, 1 séance annuelle est en général
nécessaire. Les risques de ces traitements sont en général exceptionnels.

Ménopause, accouchement(s), manque de confiance en soi liée à la physionomie de
ses parties intimes… sont autant d’éléments susceptibles de gâcher la vie sexuelle des
femmes.
Née aux états-Unis, où elle est fortement médiatisée depuis une dizaine d’années, la gynécologie
esthétique, ou médecine esthétique gynécologique, est sur le point de devenir une véritable

dans quel but ? Cette technique est réservée aux femmes présentant des problèmes relatifs à
l’atrophie vaginale, soit une perte d’épaisseur de la muqueuse due à des dérèglements hormonaux
