Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
September 14, 2014
Pastor’s Corner:
The Exaltation of the Cross
We celebrate this Sunday the Feast of the Exaltation of The Cross. The
Exaltation of the Cross? The words sound anomalous and contradictory. For many,
the cross means failure, defeat and frustration. It means the total loss of everything
beautiful in life and yet the feast we celebrate is called The Exaltation of The Cross!
But that is exactly what happened for all of us -what Jesus achieved for us. Our
crosses will triumph exactly as the cross of Jesus triumphed. In our sufferings, we
will triumph. That is what Jesus did for us. With the cross of Jesus, the history of
mankind was cut into 2 - B.C. and A.D. Everything before Jesus and everything
after Jesus- Before Christ and After Christ. This division is not a mere change in the
calendar, rather, it brings into focus a qualitative change that came to our sufferings,
to our salvation. Before Christ, the cross was a sign of condemnation, a sign of
frustration, a sign of failure. But when Jesus took it all upon Himself, the cross
meant triumph - triumph over hatred, arrogance, cruelty and anger. The cross meant
glorification, the cross meant the beauty of living! And that is why we call this feast
- The Exaltation of The Cross.
Let us reflect on the remarkable prayer that Jesus said on the cross, " Father, forgive them for they
know not what they do." (Luke 23:24) He was asking His Father to forgive everyone who broke Him, everyone who
destroyed Him on the cross. No anger, no self-pity - only love. Love triumphing over hatred. Everyone knew what they
were doing and yet Jesus said that prayer.
What gave Jesus the courage and strength to bear the cross and accept suffering? While praying in Gethsemane,
Jesus saw everything - the enormity of suffering on the cross. He saw it all and He could not bear it. Jesus became so
tense and so He said; “take this cup away from me." But then He added, " Father, not my will, but Your Will be
done." Jesus got the clear vision of the will of the Father, that it was part of the great plan of salvation that the Father
had in mind. He accepted every beating, every cruelty, every suffering from the hands of men. But every drop of
suffering became an act of love. With that love, He triumphed over hatred and the cruelty of crucifixion. From then on,
the cross became the sign of salvation and for everyone who identifies with Jesus, suffering is no more a curse.
Suffering is God's plan for our salvation. We have the great assurance that St. Paul gives us, " If we suffer, we trust we
will be glorified with Him." The bitterness of suffering is gone. The failure of the cross became the triumph of love an Exaltation of the Cross.
We are invited to look into our lives as we celebrate this feast this weekend. We suffer often. Things go wrong
with us. Others insult and humiliate us. They spread rumors about us. We become sad and broken. At such moments,
we shall remember that every bit of suffering is a sharing - a sharing in the suffering of Christ. If someone dislikes,
discriminates or is angry with us, we allow the cross to triumph if we continue to love them. If we are sick, bedridden,
old and dying, we allow the cross to triumph if we offer everything to God.
When we have this kind of attitude, we begin to really understand and live the Beatitudes that Jesus spoke of in
Luke 6:20 onwards - "Blessed are the poor…. Blessed are you that hunger… Blessed are you that weep…. Blessed are
you when men hate you and when they exclude and revile you and cast out your name as evil on the account of the Son
of Man. Rejoice in that day for yours is the kingdom! Jesus said that in moments of poverty, human sadness and
persecution, we should rejoice. For in that moment, we will share in the exaltation of the Cross.
This is Christianity - the beauty of being a disciple of Jesus - to be able to rejoice even when everything is going
wrong because we know God is there turning everything for the good. That is the Exaltation of the Cross!
God Bless !!!!!

Jesus, Lord of the harvest, Look with love on this portion of your vineyard. Bless the
Diocese of San Diego with more priests to shepherd your people, Priests with hearts like your own. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.
Pray for Priests and Vocations “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love
because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12, 13, NIV) When we pray for vocations for the priesthood, diaconate and religious, we actually pray
for ourselves, since holy priests, deacons and religious should result in a holier people. When we pray for these servants of Christ, we also
win the favor of Christ, for we, in so praying, are furthering His work. By praying for vocations we are helping our children and our
children's children because we are using a meritorious means of preserving our faith for them. “Now we ask you to respect those who work
hard among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12, 13, NIV)

MARRIAGE
September 22 is the Fall Equinox
meaning that we have equal

The

Likewise, marriage is not always
50/50. Sometimes one of you will
need to give much more than the
other. Striving to give your all to
your beloved is better than
measuring tit for tat!

Sufrimos a menudo.
