Please take a moment to fill out the survey at www.archchicago.org/renew or pick up a print copy in the vestibule. Surveys due Monday April 18th!! A prayer for “Renew My Church” Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reigns with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen Mass Intentions We encourage everyone to call or come in to the Parish House to request Weekday Mass intentions for your loved ones! Ministry of Care If you are sick or recovering from an operation, the Ministry of Care at St. Colette would like to bring communion to you. Please call the Parish House at (847) 394-8100 to make an appointment. 3 Mary, humble servant of God Most High, the Son to whom you gave birth has made you the servant of humanity. Your life was a humble and generous service. You were servant of the Word when the angel announced to you the divine plan of salvation. You were servant of the Son, giving him life and remaining open to his mystery. You were servant of Redemption, standing courageously at the foot of the Cross, close to the Suffering Servant and Lamb, who was sacrificing himself for love of us. You were servant of the Church on the day of Pentecost and with your intercession you continue to generate her in every believer, even in these, our difficult and troubled times. Let the young people look to you, young daughter of Israel, who have known the agitation of a young heart when faced with the plan of the Eternal God. Make them able to accept the invitation of your Son to give their lives wholly for the glory of God. Make them understand that to serve God satisfies the heart, and that only in the service of God and of his kingdom do we realize ourselves in accordance with the divine plan, and life becomes a hymn of glory to the Most Holy Trinity. Amen. Prayer by: Pope Saint John Paul II 4 Reception Announcement Next Tuesday there will be a very important meeting for everyone. All of you are invited to a reception in the Halpin Hall to hear about and be a part of To Teach Who Christ Is. This campaign is very necessary for our parish. It is about our school and about all of our buildings. Most of us were not here when the church and the parish school were built, and maybe not even when the parish center was built. We have inherited the hard work and sacrifice of those who came before us. It is up to us now to make the sacrifice for those who will come after us. This is not just about buildings; this is about faith. This is where we gather to celebrate God’s presence and love for us. This is where we teach who the Christ is who suffered, died and rose for us. This is where we come to receive the Eucharist and be renewed in the Holy Spirit to live the faith that has been handed on to us. This is about who we are as Catholics. This meeting next Tuesday is not just about our present, but also about our future. Please be sure to come. Along with the presentation there will be refreshments. I look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday after Mass in Halpin Hall. Produce Mobile Could you, a loved one or a friend use free produce and bread stuffs? The Produce Mobile from the Chicago Food Depository is coning back to St. Colette on Thursday, May 12th. Rain or shine, our guests will be there. Will you be able to help? Produce and bread stuffs are available to our guests or anyone you may know who could use free food beginning around 9AM and finishing around 11:30AM or so. Again, our guests do not need any form of ID. Volunteers are needed to get carts from the Jewel Store, empty the truck, sort the goods, bag and distribute the goods finally, clean up. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Mark Stastny at 847-632-1630. Thank you. Today's Gospel seems especially timely, for as Christians worldwide suffer persecution like Paul and Barnabas, Jesus promises his sheep enduring, invincible safety: "They shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand." But we who are free to live our faith peacefully sometimes take our membership in Jesus' flock for granted, wandering astray to seek our own pleasure and prosperity. The simple cross that Pope Francis always wears seems to show us how Jesus responds to that. Francis's cross features an image of Jesus, who has sought and found a lost sheep, then joyfully set it on his shoulders to carry it gently home. May Good Shepherd Sunday in this Jubilee Year of Mercy inspire us, so often lost and found ourselves, to assist Jesus in seeking, finding, and gently carrying home our fellow precious lambs. Good Shepherd Sunday inspires a World Day of Prayer for Vocations, asking God to bless communities everywhere with shepherds like Jesus. But our Good Shepherd image should embrace all the dimensions of Jesus' image. Appropriately, the Jubilee Year of Mercy comforts us by emphasizing Jesus' tenderness toward straying sheep-since we're sometimes among them. So we're glad to picture Jesus as popular religious art often does, a gentle herdsman whose kindly face smiles down on the sweet sleeping lamb he cradles. But in powerful lines already quoted from today's Gospel, Jesus balances that gentleness. Jesus' sheep belong to him, are safe in his hand, and destined to live forever. The source of this gentle Good Shepherd's unflinching strength? "My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father's hand." As the Good Shepherd's gentleness and strength combine to offer us comfort and assurance, they also illustrate discipleship's imitation of Christ as described by Saint Francis de Sales: "Nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing is so gentle as real strength." As models of the Good Shepherd's gentleness and strength, Paul and Barnabas, though subjected to "violent abuse," forgo revenge and refuse to despair, choosing instead to become "a light to the Gentiles" and "an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth." Thus, despite rejection and persecution, fellow disciples "were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit" and "the Gentiles were delighted and glorified the word of the Lord." So we should respond positively to life's negatives and face creatively whatever threatens to extinguish faith's energy. Helpless though we may feel facing evil that seems ceaseless and overwhelming, Revelation promises that disciples in every generation will one day rejoice to "have survived the time of great distress," "for the Lamb will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." Amen. The Lord says, "I will teach you the way you should go; I will instruct you and advise you." WHERE: STREETS OF CHICAGO WHEN: SATURDAY, APRIL 23RD 2016 OUR MINISTRY OF CATECHISTS The Ministry of Catechesis is about making our Christian faith alive and real in the lives of children and youth in St. Colette Church and Parish. Our Catechists at St. Colette strive to lead the children and youth to grow in their faith and love for Jesus. The Ministry depends on the contributions of many to achieve its goals. This involves working in partnership with the church community, youth, helpers, parents and the larger local community. For Catechists, we seek to create an atmosphere that allows them to be effective in Catechesis and to grow in faith. Training and faith formation is available through the Archdiocese of Chicago to become a certified Catechist to both new and experienced Catechists. For our youth and children, we understand them, love them and provide the Jesus-response and answers to their changing needs of their everyday life. For our parents and guardians we must work with them in an effective partnership for the well-being of our children, and provide the right information on the Catechism program.
