Grammar
A. El verbo “tener” más adjetivo
(Verb ‘to have’ + adjectives)
Some expressions in English use “to be” verb with an adjective; in Spanish,
these same expressions use “to have” instead! Present tense-
Ser – To be
(Yo) soy
(Tú) eres
(Él) es
(Nosotros) somos
(Ellos) son
Tener – To have
(Yo) tengo
(Tú) tienes
(Él) tiene
(Nosotros) tenemos
(Ellos) tienen
Upon closer inspection, you can notice Spanish uses “to have”
and English uses “to be” for these expressions:
I’m lucky. —>Tengo suerte.
I’m hungry. —>Tengo hambre.
I’m sleepy. —>Tengo sueño.
Spanish structure is “to have” + noun
Tengo suerte. = (I have luck.)
Tengo hambre. = (I have hunger.)
Tengo sueño.* = (I have dream.)
*Don’t worry about this, but “tengo sueño” does not translate in English well
(see B).

I am lucky. (I am a lucky person.)
I am hungry. (I am a hungry person.)
I am sleepy. (I am a tired person.)
Here are the Spanish adjectives for a lucky, hungry, or sleepy person:
Soy una persona afortunada. (I am a lucky person.)
Soy una persona hambrienta. (I am a hungry person.)
Soy una persona cansada. (I am a tired person.)

B. Traducir palabras
(Translating words)
Sometimes, the meaning is a little different in Spanish. Languages can have
different views on expressing the same idea. Take an example from the song:
…Si estás _____________________...
…If you are wounded...
...nunca te __________________ ...
...they will never hurt you…
Herido = hurt, wounded
Dañarán= hurt, damage
Spanish does not always fit how English thinks. You can damage a book, but can
you damage a person? You might hurt a person, but can you wound their
feelings? Spanish says this is ok. Words don’t always translate well, but they are
always used to paint a picture of meaning!

Cuento
Story
Tengo miedo porque con tantas personas en el mundo, ¿cómo puedo
ser una persona especial? Fácil. Mis padres crearon una persona especial.
Aunque siempre están muy ocupados, ellos están muy orgullosos de mí. Es
difícil planear para el futuro pero tengo sueños por lograr. Gracias a mis
padres, no soy un peleonero porque me gusta tener amigos. Cuando un
amigo esta herido, yo lo ayudo. Mis padres son un buen ejemplo y yo quiero
seguir sus pasos. Algunas veces me siento solo cuando estoy con otras
personas, pero los consejos de mis padres siempre están conmigo. Entonces, siempre seré una persona especial porque mis padres me cuidan. Tengo suerte.
