We combine our understanding of human experience, perception and behavior to deliver innovative, user-centered design which helps to make our cities, transport systems and public places understandable, accessible and enjoyable for all. www.steerdaviesgleave.com Marconi Express Bologna Brand and Wayfinding 2011 Grove is the latest addition to Middlesex University’s Hendon campus. The building will host many of the activities currently housed at Cat Hill, while also acting as a new high-quality space for the entire University community. It is formed of three distinct units, with each unit comprising a mixture of teaching rooms and facilities. There are spaces available for exhibitions and installations - some of which may be open to the public. The building also hosts a cafe and a food outlet. Each unit can be accessed directly from external campus areas and also from the other units via stairs and walkways on the ground and first floors. As a campus destination, it will follow the Hendon Campus wayfinding strategy convention and be identified by its head letter “G”. The main infrastructure is a driverless suspended monorail. Users of the service are expected to be international visitors travelling between the airport/Bologna and the wider region through a new high speed rail hub. Uscita di Emergenza Terminal stations are integrated within the airport and in the central rail station requiring the service brand and signage to be distinctive, recognisable and immediate. The visual identity, delivered with support of the local studio ‘Kitchen’, reflects the system’s distinctive architectural design to communicate a contemporary and sustainable service. The result is a distinctive graphic language - carried across all user touchpoints, and a pictogram based wayfinding system based. An information hierarchy establised a clear, logical sequence of messages targeted to inbound and outbound passengers allowing for streamlined directional information. The system visual identity is consistently applied to all graphic elemnents including pictograms, and a product suite that is consistent with the architectural language. Extensive use of environmental graphics avoids physical clutter, ensures clear sightlines and makes navigation to/from and within station environments simple and intuitive. The vision required the delivery of a raft of major transport schemes aimed at delivering substantial improvements to public transport and help curb reliance on the car as the population’s first transport choice. The vision included funding applications for eight major priority projects covering rail, highways (including road user charging), BRT, LRT, bus, walking, cycling and behaviour change that focused on delivering sustainable growth, reducing urban congestion and at improving access across the sub region from rural areas. Preparado por: Steer Davies Gleave + Escuela de Diseño, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile © BIOVÍAS 2006. Preparado por: Steer Davies Gleave + Escuela de Diseño, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile Biovías was originally conceived as a fully-integrated multi-modal public transport service (train, bus and cycle) based around revitalising the rail network in Concepción, Chile’s second largest metropolitan area. Time constraints resulted in priority being given to the rail system and feeder buses for the initial implementation phase. Steer Davies Gleave was commissioned, in partnership with the Universidad Católica de Chile, to develop the brand strategy, wayfinding, graphic and information design. vehicle liveries, passenger wayfinding and signing, service mapping and information. Biovías was proposed as the master brand with bus, train and cycle modes represented under the sub-brands of Biobu, Biotren and Biociclo. The visual identity was developed as a set of design guidelines and applied across all system infrastructure including customer environments, Following completion of the guidelines, Biovías commissioned Steer Davies Gleave to coordinate product artworking and manufacture including on-site snagging and factory approval to final approval and sign off. 3. Steer Davies Gleave was commissioned by the London Borough of Southwark to produce a website promoting walking in the Bankside area. There are two main areas to the site. The first is an interactive 3D model of Borough High Street. The user can navigate around the model in much the same way as they would with a 3D game, change the traffic management measures and select and position street furniture such as cycle parking, benches, signs and trees. The objects can then be positioned, rotated and relocated. Road layout options include a typical signal controlled London highway; a signal controlled highway with speed table and no guard rails; or a fully level surface without guard rails or traffic signals. The different options affect traffic speed, vehicle types and pedestrian volumes which are reflected in the live display. Designs can be saved and a commentary added. Saved designs can be viewed with users invited to vote and comment on the proposals to create a dialogue. The other main area of the site is an interactive map. The user can navigate around the Bankside area. Walks can be plotted and shared with others and places of interest (POI) added along the walk. A short textual description of the POI can be included along along with an image or video. The walk distance is also calculated and displayed to help joggers or people using walking for exercise. As with the 3D function, the walk can be saved for others to view and comment on. There is an archive where saved 3D designs and walks are available. The top 5 walks and designs (as rated by the walk2go community) are promoted and a search facility aloows visitors to find any designs or walks that have been saved by location or author.
