Hello!
I'd like to share with you thoughts from Pope Francis'
Lenten Message which I think as I found challenging, so might
you.
Our Parochial Vicar, Fr. Chuck
"For all of us, then, the season of Lent in this Jubilee
Year is a favorable time to overcome our existential alienation by listening to God's word
and by practicing the works of Mercy."
In Pope Francis' Lenten Message for this year, he incorporates the fact that our
Church is experiencing a Jubilee year of renewal. In this document (which can be found
with a simple Google search Pope Francis Lenten Message 2016) Pope Francis reflects on
the astounding reality of God's super-abundant Mercy. He points to the witness given by
the Prophet Hosea. As Hosea's love for Gomer persevered through infidelity and every
difficulty, so God's love is unfaltering towards us even through all our infidelities. His love
for us is imaged as that of a spouse. This spousal imagery culminates in the offering of
Jesus Christ Himself for His bride, the Church. This love which is lavished upon is the
reality and our experience of God's Mercy. God's Mercy towards us is as eternal as His
Love.
While it is my prayer that each of us know the reality of God's merciful and superabundant love, it is our call as Christians to allow others to experience and encounter that
Love through us. Belief in Jesus Christ and Love for Him must go beyond mere sentiment,
personal benefit, or cultural ties. As the love of a spouse tangibly changes your life, so does
the love of Christ tangibly change your life. We are invited to become tangible experiences
of God's Mercy in the lives of others, "For in the Poor, the flesh of Christ "becomes
visible in the flesh of the tortured, the crushed, the scourged, the malnourished, and the
exiled… to be acknowledged, touched, and cared for by us. (Misericordiae Vultus).
It is Pope Francis' thinking that by reflecting on and practicing the Corporal and
Spiritual works of Mercy we may grow in greater awareness of our utter dependence on
God's care. This in fact may be what makes someone most uncomfortable of serving the
poor or the marginalized, "this person could be me." It brings us to confront the fragility
of our existence and more importantly the amount of care had for us. Pope Francis speaks
to this: "the real poor are revealed as those who refuse to see themselves as such." To
recognize our own poverty can be a terrible reality, our experiences of not being in control
force us to confront our reality of being Creatures and not the Creator. And yet, it is
necessary for us to realize God's Love for us--His super-abundant and gratuitous love.
"Let us not waste this season of Lent, so favorable a time for conversion!" Please
know of my prayers for you this Lenten season and may you and I both be challenged by
Our Holy Father's Lenten Address and experience the Grace of our Poverty.
Happy Lent-ing!
Fr. Chuck Dornquast

Stations in English and Spanish
a. The Stations of the Cross commemorates 14 key events on the day of Christ's
crucifixion. The majority depict His final walk through the streets of Jerusalem,
carrying the Cross. Stations can become a mini-retreat in Lent for those who
participate. St. Lawrence conducts Stations in English on Friday evenings at
6:30 PM in the church. Spanish Stations follow at 7:15 PM in the church.
Daily Mass.
a. The Mass celebrates the Paschal Mystery: the Passion, Death and Resurrection of
our Lord. Lent is a great time to attend a daily Mass, perhaps once a week or more
frequently, if possible. St. Lawrence’s daily Mass schedule includes a 6:30 AM and
8:30 AM Mass on Monday through Friday each week. On Saturday, our daily
Mass is at 8:30 AM. We celebrate a Spanish daily Mass at 7:00 PM Tuesday
evenings.
Saturday morning Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help
a. Following our 8:30 AM Saturday daily Mass, we pray a Novena to Our Lady of
Perpetual Help. In this special devotion, we implore the intercession of our
Mother Mary to assist us in all our needs. We also pray in thanksgiving for the
many blessings we have received. The icon of the Blessed Mother with her Divine
Son has helped provide strength, comfort and even miracles to the faithful for
centuries.
Readings from daily Mass at: usccb.org/bible/readings
a. If it is not possible to attend daily Mass, one might reflect upon the Reading from
daily Mass. Those readings may be found on the United States Bishop’s website
noted above.
Live Stations of the Cross
a. On Friday, March 18, 2016, the youth community of St. Lawrence presents a
dramatic interpretation of the Stations of the Cross. Live Stations begin at
7:30 PM in the church.
Liturgy of the Hours
a. The Liturgy of the Hours, also known as the Divine Office, is the daily prayer of
the Church, marking the hours of each day and sanctifying the day with prayer.
The Hours are a meditative dialogue on the mystery of Christ, using scripture and
prayer. One of the Hours is Morning Prayer. Morning Prayer is intended and
arranged to sanctify our morning each day. The Liturgy of the Hours may be
prayed individually or in community. At St. Lawrence, Morning Prayer is prayed in
community Monday through Saturday at 8:00 AM in the chapel.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
a. Spending a quiet hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament can be a great way to
deepen your relationship with the Lord this Lent. The Blessed Sacrament is
exposed in the Christ Child Chapel (located on the northern border of the
St. Lawrence campus) beginning at 9:15 AM Thursday mornings and concluding
with Benediction on Saturday afternoons at 2:00 PM.

Almighty Father, we are always mindful of the words of St. Paul in
1 Corinthians 4:7, “What do you possess that you have not
received?” We recognize that all we have is a gift from you and in
acknowledgment of this we desire to give you the first fruits of our
lives and not the leftovers. (Exodus 23:19). As your Catholic
disciples we recognize that we are united with our brothers and
sisterss in our Diocese of St. Petersburg and with your Catholic
Church which is “Universal.” Bless our common effort as we join
our Diocese In the “Forward in Faith Campaign.” Build us into the
disciples that you wish us to be. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Almighty and loving God,
We thank you for your infinite mercy in our lives. Each
day we feel your grace anew, nourishing and blessing
us.
With confidence in your generosity, mercy and love, we
turn to you in all our needs and we ask you to fill us with
the same generosity, mercy and love toward others.
Help us to share our bread, our life, with those around
us, for when we share of ourselves we make you present
to our brothers and sisters. As you have shown mercy
toward your enemies, give us courage to act with mercy
even in the face of rejection or discomfort. You are our
source of life, our model and our message.
May we reflect your example in all that we say and do.
With grateful hearts we offer this prayer, through Jesus
Christ, your Son and our Lord.
Amen.

SEGUNDO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA
¡Hola!
Nuestro Vicario
Parroquial P. Chuck

Rosario Dedicado a Nuestra Santisima Madre
