They were not merely urging us to sing at Mass, but suggesting that the song itself is a sign of the love of Christ. Love never expressed dies, as we know from experience. Flowers for no special reason, a caress, a hug, a turn around the dance floor, a note on the pillow or in the lunchbox, the aroma of fresh bread in the kitchen, all are signs of love’s vitality. A significant treasure in our Catholic tradition is the place of the sacraments as signs of Christ’s love. We can trace the sacraments back to scriptural sources, through centuries of history They are woven through family tradition and our own life story. Sacraments are the way Christ makes signs of love for the Church. For twenty centuries, God has spoken to us in the arena of the sacraments, and we have responded. For the next year of “Treasure” essays, we will explore the story of sacraments: their sources, their signs and rituals, and the way Christ nurtures and sustains us as we encounter him, the companion on our journey who loves us and faithfully makes signs of that love. —Rev. ¡Ven, Emmanuel! Traducido de Saint Margaret Sunday Missal derechos de autor © J. S. Paluch Company GOD’S WORD TODAY The Church begins the three-year cycle of liturgical readings with the texts we proclaim today. We begin by being drawn into the prophetic vision of Isaiah, who paints a portrait of a place where there are no weapons and a time when there is no war. How sad that we seem to have made so little progress as a global community in our efforts to promote, work for, and maintain lasting peace. The Lord Jesus, the Prince of Peace, warns us that we must be prepared, for we do not know when he will return. As we prepare for his return, let us renew our efforts to work for peace, especially in places where we can make a real difference, beginning right in our own home and our own community. We would like to recognize the person who made an “origami heart” and put it in one of the bottles. A picture of that heart so beautifully made is below. Thank you for all the love you put into that heart! We also want to recognize Kylee Ockert, aged 9 yrs. old, for placing her $15.00 in one our baby bottles. “Thank you dear Kylee for giving so much!” This money will primarily help the AV Pregnancy Counseling Center and future Respect Life activities in our parish, such as the up-coming 40 Days For Life campaign during Lent in 2014, and for literature for our Respect Life Literature Table at the end of the month. All our efforts and prayers are helping to make a difference for women and their babies in our community. One young woman, who walked out of the abortion clinic when people were praying there, came out and stated she could not abort her baby! Thanks be to God! The center’s new Ultra Sound machine, that allows a mother to hear her baby’s heartbeat, is helping women to have a change of heart. The purchase of the 3D-4D Ultra Sound machine was made possible by a very large donation from the Knights of Columbus and your past donations. Thank You Knights of Columbus, Fr. It is also The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and this year celebrated on Dec. 9th. GETTING READY Today marks the beginning of another liturgical year. The tone of today’s readings casts us in the role of students learning solemn lessons. The reading from Isaiah sets the stage, calling us up a mountain to receive the Lord’s instruction. In this passage we study peace. Then Paul steps forth with sober admonitions. We have to wake up; the day is almost here. Live honorably in the light. Paul reminds us that we really do know the time in which we are living. Finally, Matthew presents Jesus the storyteller. Just imagine, Jesus tells us, what it was like in Noah’s time. He paints a vivid picture of ordinary people living ordinary lives and ignoring the warnings that Noah heeded. Totally unconcerned, they were destroyed. How will it be any different for us? No one knows when the Lord will come. But we have been warned. Perhaps we find such sobering scriptures unappealing and threatening. But within them there is promise. We are to live in the light with nothing to hide. We are to be ready. Debemos estar listos. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Winter months are the peak time for sudden infant death The number of infants who die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) increases in the cold winter months, according to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). During these colder months parents often place extra blankets or clothes on infants, hoping to provide them with more warmth. The extra materials may actually increase infants’ risk for SIDS or other unsafe sleep practices. Never let your baby get overheated. Dress your baby in light sleep clothing and keep the room at a temperature that is comfortable for you. Do not bed-share. Place babies on their backs to sleep safely.
