This tourism guide has been produced to enable travellers to discover the enchanting villages of the region of Campo Arañuelo and its surrounding area. By creating it, Almaraz Nuclear Power Station reinforces its commitment to contributing to the socioeconomic development of the local area by promoting the natural and cultural wealth of its nearby villages, as a way of thanking them for the treatment received over the more than 25 years of operation. The guide is structured according to the proximity of the municipalities to the power station. Therefore, the 12 villages located within a radius of 10 km are included first, then the seven that are located within a radius of 20 km, and finally other villages in the region and surrounding area. The guide also offers tourists information about the most outstanding walks in the area and its diverse places of interest. Finally, it includes an appendix on the technical features of the power station and its operation, which can also be of interest to the traveller coming to the region, in which the power station is unquestionably the most important industrial location. Almaraz Nuclear Power Station hopes that you, the traveller, will enjoy Extremadura and its natural and architectural wealth. Picota que simboliza la independencia jurisdiccional Hornos de cal en Almaraz 8 Orquídea Almaracensis There have been settlements in and around Almaraz dating back to many different periods and cultures. For example, in the area known as “Las Higueras” (The Fig Trees), the ruins of a Roman necropolis can be found, and in la Cueva de Mingo el Moro (the Cave of Mingo the Moor), Iron Age remains are located, which were later reused during the Middle Ages. The site includes a dolmen (nowadays blocked up) and ruins of houses and workshops of the time. The heritage of Almaraz includes a fourteenthcentury tower and a sixteenth-century parish church. The countryside of the area is also particularly spectacular. The mountain known as el Sierro is covered with rockroses, thyme, rosemary and the indigenous orchid species, Almaracensis. From the mountain, you can see the Arrocampo reservoir, which was built for the power station’s cooling circuit, and has become an atypical wetland within which an ecosystem has been created, in which nine out of the ten species of Spanish heron, several pairs of storks and other birds and insects live. 9 A beautiful location, whose name comes from the Latin “bella vista” (beautiful view), the town was an important feudal and military enclave in the Middle Ages, whose most visible and distinguishing feature is the moated walled castle, the residence of the Monroy family, which was built in the late thirteenth century. In front of Belvís’s medieval fortress, religious Belvís can be found. It was from the monastery of San Francisco, which dates from 1509, that the twelve Franciscan monks, led by Hernán Cortés, left to evangelise Mexico. At this same monastery, the penitent San Pablo de Alcántara, known as “the holiest of all Extremadurans and the most Extremaduran of all saints” underwent his novitiate. In the town, which is the centre of historical heritage of the region of Campo Arañuelo, visitors can also visit the Church of Santiago Apóstol, the Church of San Bernardo, la Ermita (hermitage) del Berrocal, el rollo o picota (a stone monument in the town square), a Roman funerary stele and shields and crests on some of the facades of buildings. La villa fue un importante enclave señorial y militar en la Edad Media, siendo su símbolo más claro y diferenciador el castillo, morada de los Monroy, que rodeado por foso y muralla se alzó a finales del siglo XIII. 11 Puente Giraldo Casas de Miravete es zona de caza mayor In the church tower of Casas de Miravete, an ashlar stone inscribed with 1669 can be found, which historians take to being the year in which the town was settled in its present location. Lying between the depression of the Rivers Tagus and Tiétar and the mountainous Villuercas Massif, it is part of the Monfragüe National Park. Over two hundred animal species inhabit the municipality of Casas de Miravete, such as the black stork, the black vulture, the imperial eagle and roe deer. La Cañada Real, popularly known locally as El Cordel (the Line), crosses the Sierra de Miravete via the mountain pass. In the ruins of a hermitage used to provide shelter to men and livestock, La Venta de San Andrés country inn opened in the fifteenth century. It was the first inn to be recorded in Spain. Over time, the area was gradually populated until it became a village. Although its date of foundation is unknown, there is evidence that, in 1571, it was the most populated town of the area. In 1515, it received King Ferdinand the Catholic, while in 1710, Philip V spent three months in Casatejada during the War of Spanish Succession. The Palacio de las Cabezas, built by the Marqués de Comillas in 1876, hosted the meetings between Franco and Juan de Borbón, the father of the current king of Spain, Juan Carlos I, in which the re-establishment of the Bourbon monarchy to Spain was agreed. In the towers at the entrance to the palace, two plaques testify to this. Casatejada also has a large number of religious buildings, such as the Church of San Pedro Advíncula, la Ermita de las Angustias, la Ermita de la Soledad and la Ermita de San Gregorio. 15 Puente de Albalat Apicultura tradicional de Higuera Higuera de Albalat is located within the protection zone of Monfragüe National Park, an area declared a “biosphere reserve” by UNESCO because of its rich flora and fauna. The name comes from the old Moorish town known as Makjada Al-balat, meaning "crossing” or “road”, whose ruins can be seen on the River Tagus, in the municipality of Romangordo. In Higuera, one can visit the Church of San Sebastián, built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the ruins of a Moorish watchtower and citadel, dating from the tenth or eleventh centuries and located on Castil Oreja Mount. Lovers of nature can enjoy walks and horse riding, or swim in the natural pool of la Garganta de Descuernacabra, which is the first stretch of the Valdecañas Reservoir. On 17 March 1809, during the Peninsular War, the Battle of Mesas de Ibor took place; it was a French victory. Evidence of the battle can still be found in the crumbling remains of a thick wall running along the ridge, which provided protection for the Spanish artillery during the battle. After the Spanish Civil War, resistance fighters remained particularly active in the area. In fact, Jerónimo Curiel “el Gacho”, a famous anti-fascist resistance fighter, was from Mesas de Ibor. He led the taking of the town in 1945 and seized all of the weapons of the Civil Guard. The incident led to the subsequent execution of the Civil Guards by firing squad by Lieutenant Colonel Gómez Cantos. In the town, one can also visit the Church of San Benito Abad, which was built in the sixteenth century, and los Pilones y el Rollo Jurisdiccional stone monuments. In terms of natural heritage, the confluence of the Rivers Ibor and Tagus, and the Cerro Pelao hill stand out. Puente de Albalat Escuela del pueblo During prehistoric times, humans lived in these lands. Evidence of this is the Canaleja cave, in which remains of earthenware vessels belonging to the Neolithic period have been found. Although the inhabitants of Romangordo knew the cave, it was not studied until 2004. It has been shown that throughout history, it has performed various functions; from storing grain for the Romans, as evidenced by the remains of seeds and containers, to sheltering soldiers during times of war, as reflected by the bullets found. The Moors also inhabited the area and founded the town of Makjada Al-balat, meaning “crossing” or “road”, since there used to be a Roman road here that linked Emérita Augusta to Toledo. Later, in the sixteenth century, King Charles I ordered the construction of the Albalat Bridge over the River Tagus, which can still be seen. During the Peninsular War, a major battle took place in Romangordo, which is commemorated every May with la Ruta de los Ingleses (the Route of the English). The archaeological ruins on the outskirts indicate that the area was inhabited by the Celtiberians from Neolithic times. The oldest document that relates to Saucedilla dates from the fourteenth century, when the town belonged to the parish of Collado. It is also known that in 1376, there was a Jewish community here, according to certain preserved archives that refer to the payment of taxes with respect to services to the crown. In the seventeenth century, Saucedilla achieved legal separation from Plasencia and acquired a town’s charter, at which time the Rollo Jurisdiccional stone monument was built. A curious fact worth noting is that the sixteenthcentury Church of Saint John the Baptist has so many stork nests on its roof that it is considered an EU Special Protection Area (SPA). Different cultures however have inhabited the area fully aware of its strategic importance from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages. The Extremaduran nobility settled in Plasencia from the fifteenth century, leaving a significant historical and artistic legacy that one can visit today. At one time, the city was an Episcopal See, which prompted the construction of the New Cathedral.
