It is good to see the Spring Training season start. We are working our way through our Lenten season of SURRENDERING. It is a very difficult task and attitude, requiring a great deal of faith and trust. Last weekend, when we offered the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. I noticed many people receiving this sacrament. On March 16, the entire diocese will have a Day of Reconciliation as we have the past two years. It is a great opportunity for people to go to confession anytime on that day. We will be at: St. Mary’s, McHenry, from 9 AM to noon; Christ the King, Wonder Lake, noon-2 PM; St. Patrick, McHenry, 2 to 5 PM; and Holy Apostles, 5 to 8 PM. We will have six priests here that night, so please plan to take advantage of this opportunity. Also on Wednesday, March 16 is the St. Baldrick’s Community Shave at McHenry West Campus High School. Please join the team or sponsor someone you know. WE OFFER OUR PRAYERS FOR: All the homeless, the unemployed, the military, the addicted, the grieving, the imprisoned, and the physically and emotionally ill. Father Paul WE OFFER OUR PRAYERS FOR THE DECEASED: During This Week We Remember: SURRENDER TO MERCY Lorraine A. DiLeonardo Week 3: Trust in the mercy of God God's mercy belongs to those who trust in him. Our God is the God of second chances. Each year Lent comes around, and we have yet another chance to turn to his mercy, to grow and produce fruit in his vineyard. But it is a leap of faith. We have to surrender uncertainty and fear, and trust in God's mercy. That if we do the right thing, God's kingdom on earth will be realized and his mercy will be upon all our lives. The 'right thing' is to repent – to have the humility to recognize that we cannot succeed alone, to stop worrying about silly concerns and useless custom, and to focus on what matters most in the work of building the kingdom: people! Please consider signing up to be part of this year’s Holy Apostles Team to raise money to conquer childhood cancer or sponsor someone who is on the team by making a donation. This exciting event truly makes a difference to children and their families affected by cancer. Joining the Holy Apostles team or donating to an existing team member is easy to do: Go to www.thechurchofholyapostles.org. Click on the big green “McHenry Community Shave” box on the right side of the home page. Click on Join or Donate and follow the directions. Each of us has been touched by a family member or a friend who has or has had cancer. Take those feelings and extend them to an innocent child and their family. The monies collected go to research to fight childhood cancer. Your donation could be the one that finds a cure. Join our team, or donate to one of the team members. We all have a part to play in this battle against cancer. You can also help this cause by purchasing a St. Baldrick’s t-shirt, the proceeds of which directly benefit local families with children who are being treated for cancer. Your Gifts to SVdPS Feed Many Needs When friends in need call the St. Vincent de Paul Society, these individuals are in desperate need of assistance. These callers often ask for help to pay for the basic necessities of living. One such call came in recently from a mother of four who was stretching her meager budget to provide everything her family needed. This middle-aged mother simply asked for food to help her family eat that week and three rosaries so that they could pray the rosary together. For this woman, having a rosary for each member of her family was a necessity and, other than food, the only thing she said that they needed. In this Year of Mercy, she had heard God's call and answered Him with a focus on family prayer. "A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor." Prov 22:9 We Welcome the Newly Baptized Everett Harold Winkelman, child of Kenneth and Katie Winkelman Pick Up a Baby Bottle Today As part of Holy Apostles' Lenten almsgiving, the Respect Life committee will be distributing bottles for their 2016 Baby Bottle fundraiser this weekend in the narthex after Masses. As in past years, the proceeds of the collection will be divided between a donation to First Way Pregnancy Services and the costs of the Respect Life Ministry. A cart with a decorated box to drop off filled bottles will be available the weekend of March 12/13. Thank you and God bless you for your faithfulness and generosity! Give the Gift of Life McHenry Knights of Columbus Council 1288 will offer a blood drive next Saturday, March 5, 8 AM to 12 PM at St. Patrick’s Church in Muldoon Hall. To make an appointment contact Frank Sweeney at 815-385-8322 or [email protected] or sign up after Mass. Walk-ins are always welcome. A photo ID is required. Donors will receive a free Moretti’s pizza coupon. SAVE THE DATE: KOC Trivia Night, April 30th at Holy Apostles. Persecuted Christians. That those Christians who, on account of their faith, are discriminated against or are being persecuted , may remain strong and faithful to the Gospel, thanks to the incessant prayer of the Church. February 28, 2016 Day of Reconciliation—March 16 Every time we sin, we hurt ourselves, other people and God. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (also called Penance or Confession) was given to us by Christ to help us reconcile with Christ and his Church when we have committed harm. Through the Sacrament, we acknowledge our sins, express our sorrow in a meaningful way, receive the forgiveness of Christ and his Church, make reparation for what we have done and resolve to do better in the future. The rite for Reconciliation involves four parts: Contrition: a sincere sorrow for having offended God and the most important act of the penitent. There can be no forgiveness of sin if we do not have sorrow and a firm resolve not to repeat our sin. Confession: confronting our sins in a profound way to God by speaking about them -aloud- to the priest. Penance: an important part of our healing is the "penance" the priest imposes in reparation for our sins. Absolution: the priest speaks the words by which "God, the Father of Mercies" reconciles a sinner to Himself through the merits of the Cross. Our McHenry area parishes will offer a full day of Reconciliation on Wednesday, March 16, as follows: St. Mary, McHenry: 9 AM to 12 noon Christ the King, Wonder Lake: 12 to 2 PM St. Patrick, McHenry: 2 to 5 PM Holy Apostles: 6 to 8 PM Come, take advantage of this opportunity to prepare your heart for the Risen Christ.
