Saint Joseph Catholic Church Monsignor John Walsh, Pastor 87 Lacy Street Marietta, Georgia 30060-1111 Non Profit Org. U.S. Postage PAID Marietta, GA Permit No. 264 Saint Joseph Catholic Church • Msgr. John Walsh, Pastor • 87 Lacy Street • Marietta, Georgia 30060-1111 25th Anniversary Celebrations THE JOURNEY TO BECOMING CATHOLIC For almost a year, several Non-Catholics have been seeking, learning, and praying about becoming Catholic. Saint Joseph community has been praying with and for them. Sunday, February 14, Archbishop Gregory elected our Catechumens (non baptized) and Candidates to receive the Easter Sacraments – Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the great Easter Vigil Mass celebrated on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at 6:00 PM. At the Rite of Election, all the parishes in the Atlanta Archdiocese celebrated with us. I often wonder why this event isn’t front page news or a featured spot on TV news. Over 1,000 people of many nationalities and religious traditions are choosing to become one with us in the Catholic Church. That seems like a big deal to me. There are so many people preparing for the Easter Sacraments that not a single Church can house us, so we rely on secular buildings. So what draws people to the Catholic Church? For many it is to unite spouse and family as one religion. For some it is to complete their Catholic initiation that was interrupted for whatever reason. Lots of folks start RCIA because of someone else, but end up feeling certain this is for them. Once in a while you have someone who has heard God’s voice and answered YES! This year a gentleman from Nigeria will approach the Baptismal waters with a pure heart, to simply give his life to Jesus. You will recognize him by his Christlike joy and ever present smile. He came into the RCIA after a conversion experience in his country of Africa. He has blessed all who know him. He is ready. He yearns for the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. He loves God with all his heart and soul. I am a better person today from knowing him. He understands what his role in life is, to follow Christ. Though not Catholic, he goes to daily mass. He is already a disciple in every sense of the word. I pray that we all may one day have such a pure heart, so that we, too, can see God and commit to following Jesus every day. If you can join us at the great Easter Vigil, you will be blessed by the presence of people who want to become Catholic; one with us at the Lord’s Table. You will experience their fresh excitement and their joy. They will have completed their journey from Lent to the glory of Easter. Celebrate with us and join me in thanking God for these newest members of the Catholic Church. Holy Thursday, March 24 Bilingual Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 7:30 PM Good Friday, March 25 Stations of the Cross at Noon Commemoration of the Lord’s Passion at 7:30 PM Holy Saturday, March 26 Solemn Vigil at 6:00 PM On Friday night February 5, 2016 Saint Joseph Church was full as we celebrated the Twenty Fifth Anniversary of the Dedication of the Church. The main Celebrant for the Mass was Bishop Louis Zarama, and he was assisted by the priests and deacons of Saint Joseph and Fr. Tran who served as a parochial vicar at Saint Joseph in the past. The music for the event was provided by a combined choir from the Anglo and Hispanic communities. The scripture readings for the Mass were the same readings that were read for the original dedication. After Communion, Msgr. Walsh thanked all those who helped organize the event. He also asked those who were present at the original dedication to stand. Surprisingly, a large number were present. After the Mass, there was a reception in Marist Hall where the celebrations continued. [email protected] Relentless - A New Program Relentless is a brand new program for those teens who have already been Confirmed. This is the next step into becoming a faith- filled adult. In the Relentless Program, we give teens practical tools to use in their faith life, to better equip them for apologetics, to help them learn how to make Christ-centered decisions in their life, while helping to prepare them to remain in a close relationship with Christ into college. The teens become disciple-makers instead of just disciples. It’s a fantastic program and we invite all young people who have already been confirmed to join us. We meet 6:00-8:00 PM in the Life Teen Room after the Life Teen Mass. Dinner is provided. Welcome to our Seminarian, Andru O’Brien It is a blessing to be at Saint Joseph Parish until the middle of May. I have truly felt welcomed into the community in just the short time that I have been here, so I look forward to getting to enter more and more into the life of the parish. As some may know, a year and a half ago I moved from the Midwest to Atlanta with my family, and am now a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Atlanta. I grew up primarily in the suburbs of St. Louis, but completed high school in Bloomington, IL. Immediately after high school I entered seminary in Minnesota and am now in my final portion of seminary in Chicago at Mundelein Seminary. In this time of parish ministry and education we are given an in-depth look at the life of a priest, and so far you have all helped me see how beautiful of a life it will be. I look forward to this time of learning from you and being a part of your lives. Please know of my daily prayers for all of you and please pray for me as well. - Andru Congratulations to parishioner, Millie Sutton, on her 100th birthday! Millie is pictured here celebrating with her daughter, Carol, and some of her grandchildren. Page 2 High School Summer Schedule is almost ready. We will be hosting weekly events for teens including sports, prayer, book clubs, service and our annual Steubenville Atlanta Conference. More details will be on our website soon. https://www.saintjosephcc.org JAMS, Coming Attractions for Middle School Students (Grades 6 -8) Saint Joseph Preschool celebrated Catholic Schools Week February 1-5.
