3rd Sunday of Easter– John 21:1-19
At that time, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples at the Sea of Tiberias. He revealed
himself in this way. Together were Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from
Cana in Galilee, Zebedee’s sons, and two others of his disciples. Simon Peter said to them, “I
am going fishing.” They said to him, “We also will come with you.” So they went out and got
into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. When it was already dawn, Jesus was
standing on the shore; but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them,
“Children, have you caught anything to eat?” They answered him, “No.” So he said to them,
“Cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” So they cast it, and
were not able to pull it in because of the number of fish. So the disciple whom Jesus loved
said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his
garment, for he was lightly clad, and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat,
for they were not far from shore, only about a hundred yards, dragging the net with the fish.
When they climbed out on shore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said
to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” So Simon Peter went over and dragged the
net ashore full of one hundred fifty-three large fish. Even though there were so many, the net
was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” And none of the disciples dared to
ask him, “Who are you?” because they realized it was the Lord. Jesus came over and took the
bread and gave it to them, and in like manner the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was
revealed to his disciples after being raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast,
Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” Simon Peter
answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.”
He then said to Simon Peter a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Simon
Peter answered him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my
sheep.” Jesus said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was
distressed that Jesus had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him,
“Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where
you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will
dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” He said this signifying by what kind of
death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”

In this third Sunday of Easter, we continue to read about
Jesus’ resurrection appearances as found in the Gospel of
John. Each appearance, whether in the Fourth Gospel
or in the Synoptics, is unique; and each expresses
something of the powerful experiences that the disciples
of Jesus had every time the Risen Lord revealed himself
to them. Yet, these encounters share certain
characteristics: it is Jesus who initiates the encounters,
the disciples experience a range of emotions (surprise, uncertainty, joy); at times Jesus is not
easily recognized, Jesus appears to them in the everyday yet nothing remains ordinary
during and after the encounter; there is dialogue, Jesus is experienced as a living powerful
physical yet as a supernatural commanding presence, the disciples learn something about
the meaning of the risen Lord and of the new mission he entrusts to them, and they are
confirmed as his apostles (emissaries, ambassadors). In today’s gospel reading the disciples
are back safe fishing in the Lake of Galilee (John calls it the Sea of Tiberias, after its Roman
port city). They seem to return to the beginning of their life with Jesus, perhaps in an
attempt to retrace and recall their first encounters with him. Peter is the decisive figure in
the group. Each successor of Peter repeats his words, “I am going fishing,” and Catholics
join him saying, “We will also come with you.” Jesus Christ calls his disciples to venture
further, to take bold risks in the mission of the Kingdom, saying to them (and to us), “Cast
the net…” At the miraculous catch they realize, “It is the Lord!” Peter impetuously
launches himself into the water. He is a disciple who has learned – sometimes the hard way
– to have bold faith. At the shore, a morning meal awaits them, prepared by Jesus himself.
He reveals himself to them again in everyday humble ways, yet there is nothing ordinary
about these encounters. In this encounter, Jesus confirms Peter in his unique ministry
within the community of disciples. This Petrine ministry will help assure – by the grace of
the Spirit – the unity and continuity of a new reality, the Church. The Christian pilgrim
who visits the historical roots of his/her faith of the Holy Land, retracing and recalling the
events of the gospels, visits this great lake of Galilee and the little church known as the
Primacy of Saint Peter, built atop an ancient stone port. The setting is vivid and evocative,
as it recalls Jesus affirming Peter in his mission as Jesus’ envoy who would shepherd Jesus’
lamb and sheep on earth. As the world press last month considered the “papal qualities”
that are needed for the new pope, the Church can confidently say that it was Jesus who puts
forth the one underlying quality that matters most to him: “Simon, do you love me?”
Wholehearted love for Jesus Christ and for his brothers and sisters is the one quality that
assures that all of the other qualities, talents, potentials, and abilities will be truly put in the
service of the kingdom of God. It is love that provides the motive and the impulse, the
direction and the energy, for all authentic leadership and ministry in the name of Jesus
Christ. Entrusted with the mission to “feed the lambs and tend to the sheep,” Jesus repeats, at the close of the gospel narrative, the very words he had spoken to his disciples
when he first met them, “Follow me.” This very call Jesus Christ repeats to the Church as
a whole and to each of her members – without exception – today.

"We must not be afraid to be Christians and to live as Christians!"

Here is a translation of the address Pope Francis gave Sunday before and after praying the
midday Regina Caeli with those gathered in St. Peter's Square.
Dear brothers and sisters! Buon giorno!
On this Sunday that concludes the Octave of Easter I renew Easter greetings to everyone with
the words of the risen Jesus himself: “Peace to you!” (John 20:19, 21, 26). It is not salutation
nor a simple greeting: it is a gift, indeed, the precious gift that Christ offers to his disciples after
having passed through death and the netherworld (“inferi”). He gives peace as he promised: “I
leave you peace, my peace I give you. Not as the world gives it do I give it to you” (John
14:27). This peace is the fruit of the victory of God’s love over evil, it is the fruit of forgiveness. And this is exactly how it is: true peace, profound peace,
comes from the experience of the mercy of God. Today is Divine Mercy Sunday, established according to the wishes of Blessed John Paul II, who died on
the very eve of this celebration.
The Gospel of John tells us that Jesus appeared twice to the Apostles who had locked themselves inside the upper room: the first was on the very evening
of the Resurrection, and Thomas was not there, Thomas, who said: if I do not see and do not touch I will not believe. The second time, eight days later,
Thomas was present. And Jesus addressed himself precisely to him, inviting him to look at the wounds and to touch them; and Thomas exclaimed: “My
Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). Then Jesus said: “Because you saw me you believed; blessed are those who have not seen and have believed!” (20:29).
And who are these others who believed without seeing? Other disciples, other men and women of Jerusalem who, although they had not encountered the
risen Jesus, believed on the testimony of the Apostles and the women. This is a very important consideration with respect to the faith, we might call it the
beatitude of faith. Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed: this is the beatitude of faith! In every time and in every place those people are
blessed who, through the Word of God, proclaimed by the Church and witnessed to by Christians, believe that Jesus Christ is the love of God incarnate,
Mercy incarnate. And this is true for all of us!
Together with his peace, Jesus granted his Apostles the Holy Spirit, so that they could bring the forgiveness of sins into the world, that forgiveness that
only God can give and whose cost was the Blood of his Son (cf. John 20:21-23). The Church is sent by the risen Christ to transmit the remission of sins to
men, and in this way to make the Kingdom of love grow, to sow peace in hearts, so that peace also be affirmed in relationships, in societies, in institutions.
And the Spirit of the risen Christ drives fear out of the Apostles’ hearts and drives them out of the upper room to spread the Gospel. We too have more
courage to witness to the faith in the risen Christ! We must not be afraid to be Christians and to live as Christians! We must have this courage to go
proclaim Christ risen because he is our peace, he made peace with his love, with his forgiveness, with his blood, with his mercy.
Dear friends, this afternoon I will celebrate the Eucharist in the Basilica of St. John Lateran, which is the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome. Let us pray to
the Virgin Mary that she help us, bishop and people, to walk together in faith and charity, always confident in the mercy of the Lord: He always waits for
us, he loves us, he forgave us with is blood and he forgives us every time we go to him to ask forgiveness. Let us have faith in his mercy!

Neocatechumenal communities of Rome, who begin today a special mission in the piazzas of the city. I invite everyone to bring the Glad Tidings to every
sphere of life, “with sweetness and respect”! (1 Peter 3:16). Go into the public places and proclaim Jesus Christ, our Savior.

Juan 20, 19-31
En aquel tiempo, Jesús se
apareció otra vez a los
discípulos junto al lago de
Tiberíades. Y se apareció
de esta manera: Estaban
juntos Simón Pedro,
Tomás apodado el Mellizo, Natanael el de Caná
de Galilea, los Zebedeos y
otros dos discípulos suyos.
Simón Pedro les dice:
“Me voy a pescar.” Ellos
contestan: “Vamos también nosotros
contigo.”Salieron y se
embarcaron; y aquella noche no cogieron nada. Estaba ya amaneciendo, cuando
Jesús se presentó en la orilla; pero los discípulos no sabían que era Jesús. Jesús les
dice: “Muchachos, ¿tenéis pescado?” Ellos contestaron:“No.” Él les dice: “Echad
la red a la derecha de la barca y encontraréis.” La echaron, y no tenían fuerzas
para sacarla, por la multitud de peces. Y aquel discípulo que Jesús tanto quería le
dice a Pedro: “Es el Señor.” Al oír que era el Señor, Simón Pedro, que estaba
desnudo, se ató la túnica y se echó al agua. Los demás discípulos se acercaron en
la barca, porque no distaban de tierra más que unos cien metros, remolcando la
red con los peces. Al saltar a tierra, ven unas brasas con un pescado puesto encima y pan. Jesús les dice: “Traed de los peces que acabáis de coger.” Simón
Pedro subió a la barca y arrastró hasta la orilla la red repleta de peces grandes:
ciento cincuenta y tres. Y aunque eran tantos, no se rompió la red. Jesús les dice:
“Vamos, almorzad.” Ninguno de los discípulos se atrevía a preguntarle quién era,
porque sabían bien que era el Señor. Jesús se acerca, toma el pan y se lo da, y lo
mismo el pescado. Esta fue la tercera vez que Jesús se apareció a los discípulos,
después de resucitar de entre los muertos. Después de comer, dice Jesús a Simón
Pedro: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas más que éstos?” Él le contestó: “Si, Señor,
tú sabes que te quiero.” Jesús le dice: “Apacienta mis corderos.” Por segunda vez
le pregunta: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas?” Él le contesta: “Si, Señor, tú sabes
que te quiero.” Él le dice: “Pastorea mis ovejas.” Por tercera vez le pregunta:
“Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me quieres?” Se entristeció Pedro de que le preguntara por
tercera vez si lo quería y le contestó: “Señor, tú conoces todo, tú sabes que te
quiero.” Jesús le dice: “Apacienta mis ovejas. Te lo aseguro: cuando eras joven, tú
mismo te ceñías e ibas~ adonde querías; pero, cuando seas viejo, extenderás las
manos, otro te ceñirá y te llevará adonde no quieras.” Esto dijo aludiendo a la
muerte con que iba a dar gloria a Dios. Dicho esto, añadió: “Sígueme.”
Reflexión Dominical
En este tercer Domingo de Pascua continuamos leyendo sobre las apariciones de Jesús resucitado, como se
expresan en el Evangelio de Juan. Cada aparición, tanto en el Cuarto Evangelio como en los Sinópticos, es única;
cada expresa algo de las poderosas experiencias que los discípulos tuvieron cada vez que el Señor resucitado se les
revelo. Sin embargo, estos encuentros comparten ciertas características: es Jesús quien las inicia, los discípulos
experimentan una gama de emociones (sorpresa, incertidumbre, gozo); a veces no reconocen a Jesús fácilmente,
Jesús se les revela en lo ordinario de la vida pero nada permanece ordinario durante y después del encuentro con
él; hay dialogo, Jesús es percibido como viviendo poderosamente de manera física pero como una presencia
sobrenatural abrumadora pero supremamente bondadosa, los discípulos aprenden algo sobre el significado del
Señor resucitado y de su nueva misión que él les encomienda, y son confirmados como apóstoles (emisarios,
embajadores). En el evangelio de hoy los discípulos regresan a la seguridad de la pesca en el gran Lago de Galilea
(Juan le llama el lago el Mar de Tiberiades, por el nombre de su puerto romano). Aparentan regresar al principio
de su vida con Jesús, quizás con intento a volver a trazar y recordar sus primeros encuentros con él. Pedro es la figura decisiva del grupo. Cada sucesor de Pedro
repite las palabras, “Voy a pescar,” y los católicos les acompañan diciendo, “También iremos contigo.” Jesucristo llama a sus discípulos a venturar mas allá, a
tomar riesgos intrépidos en la misión del reino, diciéndoles (y a nosotros), “¡Echad la red!” Al ver la pesca milagrosa se dan cuenta, “¡Es el Señor!” Pedro
impetuosamente se lanza al agua. El es el discípulo que ha aprendido – algunas veces con dificultad – de tener fe audaz. A la orilla, un desayuno les espera,
preparado por Jesús mismo. El se les revela de nuevo en la humildad de lo cotidiano, sin embargo nada permanece ordinario siguiendo estos encuentros. En este
encuentro, Jesús confirma a Pedro en su exclusivo ministerio dentro de la comunidad de discípulos. Es este ministerio Petrino que ayudara a asegurar – por la
gracia del Espíritu – la unida y continuidad de una nueva realidad, la Iglesia. El peregrino cristiano que visita las raíces históricas de su fe en la Tierra Santa,
siguiendo y recordando los eventos de los evangelios, visita este gran Lago (o Mar) de Galilea y la pequeña iglesia conocida como El Primado de San Pedro,
edificada sobre las piedras de un antiguo muelle de pesca. El escenario es vivido y evocativo, e inspira a recordar como Jesús afirmo a Pedro en su misión como
su enviado quien pastoreara el rebaño de Jesús en la Tierra. Así como la prensa mundial el mes pasado considero cuales fuesen la “cualidades papales” más
necesitadas en el nuevo papa, la Iglesia confiadamente puede asegurarse que fue Jesús quien propuso la cualidad fundamental que significa más que todas:
“¿Simón, me amas?” El amor total por Jesucristo y por sus hermanos y hermanas es la cualidad esencial que asegura que las otras cualidades, talentos, potenciales,
y habilidades serán genuinamente puestas al servicio del reino de Dios. Es el amor que provee el motivo y el impulso, la dirección y la energía, para un liderazgo
y ministerio autentico en el nombre de Jesucristo. Confiado con la misión de “apacentar y pastorear las ovejas,” Jesús repite, al final del relato del evangelio, las
mismas palabras que había pronunciado a sus discípulos cuando por primera vez los encontró, “Sígueme.” Esta misma llamada Jesucristo repite a su Iglesia en
su totalidad y a cada de sus miembros – sin excepción – hoy.
