Audition Workshop for Choristers
In the summer of 2012, several
persons from Saint Thomas
Aquinas Cathedral in Reno (the
rector and seven parishioners)
attended the Church Music
Association of America’s
Sacred Music Colloquium at
the Cathedral of the Madeleine
in Salt Lake City, Utah. The
experience was tremendous in
every respect: the workshops,
the concerts and especially the
Masses. One of the high points
of the week-long event was to
hear the local children’s chorus,
called the Choir School of the
Madeleine (pictured above),
perform. It would not be an
exaggeration to claim that is
the finest children’s choir in
North America. Their musicianship, their repertoire, their
professionalism (though they
are only elementary school
children) was all outstanding.
Most wonderful of all, their
impressive gifts are placed
entirely at the service of the
sacred liturgy, indeed, they
sing for Mass at the Cathedral
of the Madeleine throughout
the school year.
In his address to the
musicians, choir directors and
parish liturgists of the Church
Music Association of America,
Gregory Glenn, the Artistic
Director of the Choir School of
the Madeleine, emphasized
that Catholic churches need to
focus on developing the
institutions of sacred music and
not just on creating events at
which truly Catholic and sacred
music is featured. Maestro
Glenn has certainly achieved
great things with the Choir
School of the Madeleine, but
his success didn’t happen
overnight. Rather, it had to start
somewhere concrete, with
small initiatives that eventually,
through hard work and
unceasing effort, morphed into
larger and more comprehensive
ones.
Such is our hope for the
Cathedral Choristers of Reno
initiative starting here next
month. The first phase of the
initiative is an audition
workshop on Wednesday,
August 28 at 4:30 PM in the
Choir Loft. All families with
children interested in singing
should come to the audition
workshop. If a child qualifies by
audition, he or she may enroll
in the program and receive (1)
top-flight musical instruction;
(2) frequent opportunities for
performance; and (3) ongoing
development in literacy.

and leave your name.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
A man was in front of the church and the priest was standing at the door as he always is to
shake hands. Father pulled him aside & said to him, "You need to join the Army of the Lord!"
The man replied, "I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Father”.
Father questioned, "How come I don't see you except at Christmas and Easter?"
He whispered back, "I'm in the secret service.

E NTRADA
