Saint Clare of Assisi
Assisi, in the Umbrian region
of Central Italy, is a small
walled town with three saints.
The patron of Assisi, who
converted the populace to
Christianity in the ninth
century, is the Roman martyr
Saint Rufinus. The best known
of the saints of this town is
undoubtedly Saint Francis, the
founder of the Order of Friars
Minor and one of the greatest
figures in the history of
Christianity. But Saint Clare,
and exact contemporary of
Saint Francis, should not by
any means be neglected. Like
many of the young men of the
town, she, too, was inspired by
the example of evangelical life
and simplicity of the town
cloth merchant’s son, and,
despite the nobility of her own
background, was determined to
follow his spiritual path as well.
Thus, she gave away her dowry
and renounced the privileges
of her wealthy family. In AD
1212, Saint Francis received
Saint Clare into religious life at
the the tiny church of Our Lady
Queen of the Angels of the
Portiuncula, on the plains of
Assisi, below the fortified
section of town. Later, at San
Damiano, she would found a
an Order of cloistered,
contemplative and penitential
nuns who exemplify in the
austerity of their lives the
spiritual and material poverty
of Saint Francis. Even a cursory
glance at her writings, especially the Rule and her letters
to Saint Agnes of Prague, one
of Clare’s early followers,
reveals the Mother foundress’
keen intellect and outstanding
resolve both to implement and
preserve an entirely new way of
religious life for women, one
that has endured now for eight
hundred years. Today, there are
approximately 20,000 Poor
Clares throughout the world.
In a letter to Saint Agnes she
writes: Place your mind in the
mirror of eternity; place your
soul in the splendor of
glory; place your heart in the
figure of the divine substance;
through contemplation, transform your entire beinginto the
image of the Divine One
himself, So that you, yourself,
may also experience what His
friends experience when they
t a s t e t h e h i d d e n sw e e t ness that God alone has kept
from the beginning for those
who love Him.
August 11th is the Feast of
Saint Clare of Assisi.

How We Stand
To bring you up to date on the Renovation Loans, we have been able to bring down both loans this
past year. The loans were split two; one loan was to be paid raising money as a parish, and the
second loan was to be paid through other funding sources. Please know that both loans are the
Cathedral’s liability. So here is how we stand as of June 2013:
Renovation Loan #1 Annual Rate of interest 3% down from 6%
Payment
Interest Pd Pd to Principle
Loan #1
$1,739,891.45
$123,106.45 $51,229.17 $17,204.11
Balance
$1,668,014.17
Renovation Loan #2 Annual Rate of interest 0% down from 6%
Payment
Interest Pd Pd to Principle
Balance
Loan #2
$1,886,709.19
$50,000.00 0%
$50,000.00
$1,836,709.19
Renovation loan #2 is the loan that people sign up for at the being of the Renovation on a monthly
basis. These payments are almost finished and will probably not drop the balance below a million.
Many people fell victim to the recession and either lost their job and had to move to find work, or
simply stopped paying. As a parish we will need to consider another fund raising project by the
end of October.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
A 4-year-old boy was asked to give the meal blessing before dinner. The family members bowed
their heads in expectation. He began his prayer, thanking God for all his friends, naming them one
by one. Then he thanked God for Mommy, Daddy, brother, sister, Grandma, Grandpa, and all his
aunts and uncles. Then he began to thank God for the food. He gave thanks for the turkey, the
dressing, the fruit salad, the cranberry sauce, the pies, the cakes, even the Cool Whip. Then he
paused, and everyone waited-- and waited. After a long silence, the young fellow looked up at his
mother and asked, "If I thank God for the broccoli, won't He know that I'm lying?"

E NTRADA
Somos la iglesia peregrina que Él fundo, somos un pueblo que camina sin cesar;
Hay una fe que nos alumbra con su luz, una esperanza que empapo nuestro esperar;
Es el Señor nos acompaña al caminar, con su ternura a nuestro lado siempre va;

Siempre seremos caminantes, pues solo caminando podremos alcanzar,
