Primavera - Spring 2012
Bienvenidos a la edición de primavera 2012 de nuestra “Q News”
donde encontrará información sobre nuestra vida social y la
completa oferta de servicios que le ofrecemos en La Quinta.
Hace unos meses, celebramos dos pruebas del circuito Europeo,
el Open de España Femenino, y la tercera edición del Benahavis
Senior Master, todo un hito para nuestro club.
También la oferta gastronómica ha sido ampliada y renovada en
La Quinta.
Espero que disfruten con esta lectura y se animen a conocer La
Quinta, si aún no lo han hecho.

Welcome to the Spring 2012 edition of our “Q News” where
you will find information on the social life of the clubs and the
complete range of services that we offer here at La Quinta.
Just a few months ago we hosted two important tournaments
on the European circuit, the Ladies Spanish Open and the third
Benahavís Senior Masters, another major milestone for our club.
We have also widened and renewed the gastronomic offer across
La Quinta.
I hope you enjoy reading this Q News and I encourage you to
come and get to know La Quinta, if you haven’t already done so.

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR
Open de España Femenino 2011.
Por primera vez en nuestra historia, La Quinta Golf ha sido la sede
de una prueba del circuito europeo femenino, el Open de España
2011.
Gracias a un plantel espectacular de jugadoras. La imagen del club
se ha visto reforzada a nivel mundial, ya que tuvimos la suerte de
contar con tres jugadoras que disputaron la Solhein Cup unos días
después. Entre ellas estaba la ganadora, Melisa Reid y la numero
uno durante muchos años Laura Davies.
Todas las jugadoras disfrutaron de un tiempo digno de los mejores
septiembre de la Costa del Sol que junto con el campo y la
magnifica restauración hicieron que, según ellas, disfrutaran de
uno de los mejores campeonatos del circuito.
Al final, se impuso Melissa Reid, con 8 golpes por debajo del
campo en la clasificación general.
Las Españolas Tania Elósegui y Carlota Ciganda dejaron el
pabellón nacional bien alto, demostrando que el golf femenino
español todavía tiene mucho que decir. Tania conseguía en la 2ª
jornada una vuelta de 65 golpes, siendo esta por la que conseguiría
el premio al record del campo.
Esperamos poder volver a verlas pronto por nuestra casa.

Ladies Spanish Open 2011.
For the first time in our history, La Quinta Golf was selected as
a venue for the Ladies European Tour, the Spanish Open 2011.
Borja Pascual, Eduardo Ruíz, Melissa Reid, José Luis Gómez &
Thanks to a spectacular line up of players the Club’s image was Joaquín Moya Angeler
reinforced at a global level given that we were lucky enough to have
three Solhein Cup players, just a few days after their wonderful
victory. Among them was the winner, Melissa Reid and the world’s
number one of many years, Laura Davies.
The players enjoyed the weather that only the Costa del Sol
can offer in September which, coupled with a course that has
undergone extensive remodelling, made for what many labelled as
one of the best tournaments on the circuit.
In the end it was Melissa Reid, with a final score of 8 under par,
who headed the leaderboard.
The Spaniards Tania Elósegui and Carlota Ciganda maintained
national pride, showing once more that the Spanish Ladies have
much to offer. In the second round Tania, took the prize for the
course record with an incredible 65.
We look forward to seeing all the Ladies
back at our Club in the future.

EUROPEAN SENIOR TOUR
Benahavís Senior Masters 2011.
Por tercer año consecutivo hemos acogido al European Sénior
Tour celebrando el III Benahavis Senior Master. Poco a poco este
torneo se esta convirtiendo en nuestra prueba referente, gracias
al apoyo del European Tour y al Ayuntamiento de Benahavis, así
como otros patrocinadores.
Antes del torneo de tres días se celebró un torneo Pro-Am de
dos días donde los amateurs jugaron al lado de algunos de los
golfistas sénior más conocidos del mundo, como Manuel Piñero,
José Rivero, Víctor García, Sam Torrance, Constantino Roca y
Juan Quirós.
Este torneo que se disputa en un ambiente muy relajado y de
gran compañerismo viene acompañado del ya tradicional clinic
al casi centenar de alumnos de la escuela municipal de golf de
Benahavis. Los jugadores sénior no dudaron en satisfacer las
peticiones de golpes “imposibles” como driver por encima de los
275 metros de distancia o algún golpe diferente colocando la
bola en lo alto de una varilla.
El inglés Carl Mason logró su vigésimo quinta victoria en el
European Senior Tour al hacerse con el título del Benahavis
Sénior Masters, con tres golpes de ventaja sobre sus compatriotas
Mark James y Gary Wolstenholme en La Quinta Golf and
Country Club.
Mason, que ya ganó este torneo en la edición inaugural de 2009
y obtuvo su primer triunfo en el European Tour en el Open de
España de 1994, prorrogo su idilio en España y amplió el récord
de victorias en el circuito europeo de veteranos.
“Es extraño”, declaraba Mason, con respecto al hecho de que ha
ganado seis Torneos del Sénior Tour en España. “Igual es por algo
que le echan al agua, o ¡en el Rioja!. Siempre pateo bien en estos
greenes, les tengo cogido el toque y eso es algo fundamental”.
Todos coincidieron en las excelentes condiciones del campo, y en
especial, en el buen estado de los greenes. Estamos deseando ver
de nuevo a estos “jóvenes” para que nos enseñen, como se juega
al golf a la vieja usanza.

Benahavís Senior Masters 2011.
For the third consecutive year we played host to the European
Senior Tour with the celebration of the III Benahavis Senior
Masters. Year by year this tournament is becoming a point of
reference for our Club thanks to the support of the European
Tour and the Benahavís Town Hall, as well as our many sponsors.
In advance of the three day tournament we held a two day ProAm event where amateurs played alongside some of the most well
known senior golfers in the world such as Manuel Piñero, José
Rivero, Víctor García, Sam Torrance, Constantino Roca and Juan
Quirós.
This tournament is played in a very relaxed and friendly
atmosphere and involves the traditional golf clinic for almost
one hundred students of the municipal golf school in Benahavís.
The senior player didn’t hesitate in satisfying the demands for
impossible shots such as drives over 275 metres or hitting balls
placed on the top of a club shaft.
Englishman Carl Mason captured his 25th win on the European
Senior Tour with his win at the Benahavis Senior Masters, with
a three shot advantage over fellow countrymen Mark James and
Gary Wolstenholme at La Quinta Golf and Country Club.
Mason, who won the inaugural Benahavís Senior Masters in 2009
and who won his first European Tour title in the Spanish Open of
1994, extended his Spanish love affair and extended his record of
wins on the senior European circuit.
“It’s strange”, said Mason, in reference to his winning six Senior
Tour tournaments in Spain. “maybe it’s something they put in the
water... or the Rioja!. I always putt well on these greens, I’ve got
the feel for them and that’s fundamental.”
All were agreed on the excellent playing conditions and, in
particular, the excellent condition of the greens. We’re looking
forward to seeing these “youngsters” again
and enjoying watching them play their
exceptional, experienced golf.

CONSEJOS POR MANUEL PIÑERO / GOLF TIPS FROM MANUEL PIÑERO
El Putt y la Lectura del Green
Mi consejo para el putt. La lectura del Green se debe hacer siempre por la parte posterior, de frente y por la parte baja de la caída.
Mirando por estos tres sitios se tiene una perspectiva clara de lo que tiene que hacer la bola para conseguir el objetivo, que es lógicamente
meterla en el hoyo.
Una vez leído el Green, elegimos la línea por donde debe ir la bola. En esa línea coger una referencia más cercana a la bola y golpearla
con firmeza, manteniendo la cabeza del palo cerca de la hierba. Esto hace que el golpeo sea solido y la bola ruede con consistencia.

When a fellow competitor is
preparing to putt, one should not be
either behind or in front of the line
of the ball. Neither should one move
so as not to break the other player’s
concentration.
The Putt, and Reading the Green
My advice for reading the green in advance of the putt is that it should always be done from behind, in front
and from the lower side of any drop. Looking from these three positions one achieves a clear perspective of
how the ball is going to behave on it’s way to the objective- the hole.
Once we have read the green and determined the line along which the ball should travel, we should choose a
reference point closer to the ball and strike the ball firmly, keeping the head of the putter close the grass once
the ball is hit. This keeps the putt solid and ensures that the ball rolls consistently.

El pasado Octubre (del 21 al 23 de Octubre) se celebró la Gran
Final del V Circuito de Golf Meliá en el hotel Meliá La Quinta.
Acudieron los ganadores de cada categoría de V Circuito de Golf
Meliá así como los ganadores del I Open Meliá American Express.
Paralelamente a esta final se celebró el torneo de los patrocinadores.
También tuvimos una gran respuesta por parte de los acompañantes
para participar en el Clinic celebrado en la escuela de Golf pero
desafortunadamente por culpa de las condiciones meteorológicas
no se pudo jugar..... y lo que se decidió fue pasar el torneo de
finalistas al próximo año es decir en el 2012 celebraremos el Torneo
de Finalistas 2011 + Torneo Finalista 2012, los participantes
aplaudieron esta decisión por parte del comité y en la cena de gala
procedimos a entregar los trofeos de agradecimiento a nuestros
patrocinadores: AVIS y AMERICAN EXPRESS como esponsors;
IBM-COCA COLA y HEINEKEN como esponsor/colaborador
y AIR EUROPA, CISCO SYSTEMS, DIGITAL+, HALCON

Circuito Meliá
Last October (from 21st to 23rd) saw the Grand Final of the V
Meliá Golf Circuit in the Meliá La Quinta hotel. Participating
were the winners in each category of the V Meliá Golf Circuit
along with the winners of the I Meliá American Express Open.
Alongside this tournament, a competition among the sponsors
was also played. There was also great interest in the Golf Clinic
which was to have been held in the
Golf Academy.
Unfortunately, due to poor weather
conditions the events had to be
postponed and the decision was taken
to play the 2011 and the 2012 finals
together in 2012.
The participants applauded the
committee’s decision and during the
gala dinner the sponsors were presented
with trophies in recognition of their
support: AVIS and AMERICAN
EXPRESS as sponsors; IBM, COCA
COLA and HEINEKEN as sponsor/
collaborators and AIR EUROPE,
CISCO SYSTEMS, DIGITAL+,

We also ran a draw for the many gifts
which had been allocated to the final!
Primera Jornada Medioambiental First Environmental Workshops Held
Celebrada en el Hotel Meliá La Quinta. in the Hotel Meliá La Quinta.
Desde el Hotel Melia la Quinta os informamos que el concejal
delegado de Medio Ambiente, Antonio Espada y Susana Jimenez,
Directora General del hotel, realizaron el día 28 de Julio, la
primera entrega de diplomas de la jornada medioambiental y
ecológica desarrollada en el Club de niños del hotel Meliá La
Quinta, en la que los más jóvenes han sido los protagonistas.
Los

peques
aprendieron labores de
reciclaje, degustaron un
menú ecológico, pudieron
conocer un energético e
innovador sistema de riego
y consiguieron identificar
lo que son ‘delitos’
medioambientales.
Los padres alabaron esta
iniciativa que demuestra
una vez más el compromiso
del hotel Melia La
Quinta con el cuidado del
medio ambiente.
We are proud to announce that the councillor for the Environment,
Antonio Espada, and Susana Jimenez, Director of the Hotel,
made the first presentation of diplomas for the Environment and
Ecology workshops held in the Kid’s Club of the Hotel Meliá La
Quinta to the participating youngsters on the 28th July.
The children learned
about recycling, sampled
a menu of ecological food,
got to know an exciting,
new irrigation system,
and were able to identify
environmental “crimes”.
Their parents praised
this initiative which
confirms once more
the commitment of the
Hotel Meliá La Quinta
to the protection of the
environment.

renovado y ampliado la oferta gastronómica de La Quinta, para
que sea un lugar de referencia dentro del mundo de la restauración

inauguramos un rincón único,

esta situado en el cruce de los
tres recorridos del campo, en

widened and renewed the culinary offerings at La Quinta, so that
it will be a reference point within the restaurants on the Costa del
Sol.
A few months ago we
inaugurated a very special
corner of our Club where you
can enjoy a fabulous breakfast
in the morning, and later some
wonderful tapas and traditional
Spanish fare such as salted
cod. This place is the already
popular HOYO 19, located
at the intersection of the three
golf courses in a spot which
offers some truly unforgettable
picture postcard golf course
views.
In the Clubhouse we have a
new travelling companion in
the renowned restaurant chain
DOÑA
FRANCISQUITA,
a family business with a an
impeccable history and an
enviable reputation in the
restaurant and catering sector.
They offer an impressive
range of the traditional
Clubhouse “snacks” which
every Clubhouse should have
on the menu alongside an
impressive a la carte menu
which could readily be placed
alongside any of those from the
most respected restaurants on the
Coast. Additionally, thanks to their
extensive experience and flexible
company structure, they are also
able to accommodate events with
up to 2,000 guests on a daily basis,
which will guarantee their success.
And, if this isn’t enough, and before heading
off hone you need to do so me last minute
shopping, there’s no need to worry. You
can now buy anything from bread to the
newspaper, a bottle of wine or a bottle of
champagne to celebrate your latest scorecard,
as well as a range of other gourmet products at
EL GOURMET LA QUINTA.
Finally, within La Quinta itself, you also
have the option of visiting Restaurante Los
Arcos, enjoying the exotic delights of the
Japanese restaurant Kaede or simply enjoying
a wholesome snack down at the Golf Academy
Bar.
La Quinta has large salons where we can
host events with up to 300 guests as well as
meeting rooms which are complemented by
the exceptional terrace where you can enjoy
bar and restaurant service surrounded by
nature and mountains and with some of the
best views on the Costa del Sol.
AGRONOMIA / AGRONOMY
Unas palabras del Greenkeeper.
Ya estamos saliendo del invierno, que ha sido atípicamente seco
después de un inicio de otoño bastante lluvioso.
El green del hoyo 4 del campo A se ha reformado para solventar
los problemas que venimos arrastrando desde hace años y que
finalmente han provocado que sea irrecuperable. Este green
tiene una superficie similar, pero con un moldeo que facilita la
evacuación rápida de agua. Se elimina el bunker de la entrada,
se reforman dos de los existentes y se añaden otros dos en la
parte trasera, todo esto sin modificar las distancias del mismo. El
green se ha reformado siguiendo estrictamente la normativa de
construcción de la United States Golf Association (USGA).
Ya se ha realizado la resiembra de Ryegrass en las plataformas de los
tee. Y se están realizando las tareas de mantenimiento propias de
esta época, que de forma reducida consiste en; veticuts y recebos
de arena, micro pinchado con pinchos macizos para mejorar el
drenaje del Green así como el “rajado vertical” que proporcionarán
una mejor y más .firme superficie de juego. Continuamos con
nuestra decidida lucha contra el Kikuyugrass y el Paspalum,
teniendo que usar herbicidas agresivos para ello, ya que no los hay
selectivos. Esto provoca perdida de color y textura de determinadas
zonas de manera temporal
Además, se han realizado mejoras tales como; levantamiento de
aspersores y arquetas que se han hundido con el tiempo, cambio
de las placas de distancia para facilitar su lectura y limpieza,
colocación de pasamanos para evitar accidentes, colocación de
una puerta eléctrica y nueva valla para mejorar la seguridad en el
green del hoyo 5 A, en el hoyo 2 del campo B y en el hoyo 7 del
campo C.
Así mismo se ha eliminado el 2º bunker de la calle a la izquierda
en el hoyo 1 y el de la izquierda de la calle en el hoyo 5, ambos
del campo A.
A word from the Greenkeeper.
We continue to fight against the Kikuyugrass and the Paspalum,
although we have had to resort to using strong herbicides given
that there are no selective options for these grasses. This has led
to the loss of colour and texture in certain areas of the course
although this will be temporary.
We have also made improvements including the raising of
sprinklers and drains which had sunk with time, changing of the
distance plaques to make them more legible, the installation of
handrails to help avoid accidents, the installation of a new electric
gate and fencing to improve safety on the greens of hole 5 of A
course, on hole 2 B and hole 7 of C course.
We have eliminated the second bunker on the left on the fairway
on hole 1 and the bunker on the left on the fairway on hole 5 both
of A course.
We are now getting ready for the onset of spring after what
has been a particularly dry Winter despite a rainy beginning to
Autumn.
The green on hole 4 of A Course has been remodeled to solve
the problems we have been suffering for the past few years which
eventually made it irreparable. This green has a similar surface,
but with a contour which makes for quicker drainage of surplus
water. We have eliminated the entrance bunker, remodeled the
two existing bunkers and added two more at the rear of the green
- and all this without altering any of the distances. The green
has been remodeled in strict accordance with the construction
regulations of the United States Golf Association (USGA).
We have been undertaking the seasonal maintenance projects
which include reseeding the tee boxes with Ryegrass, verticuting
and topdressing, micro-aeration with solid tines which will
improve the drainage condition and firmness of the playing
surface.
