\ “But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the Word with accompanying signs.” With those words St. Mark closes his Gospel — our Gospel reading on this day, the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. This has not changed as we, the followers of Jesus, continue to preach everywhere with the support and presence of the Lord. We are all called to discipleship, and practicing good stewardship is a great way to be the disciples Jesus expects us to be. Part of our discipleship involves evan‐
gelization — that is, living out the Good News, the Word, in all we do. No matter where we are or what we are doing we represent Jesus and we represent the Church. The Ascension was the close of Jesus’ physical ministry on Earth, but it was not the end of His minis‐
try. That is where His followers and Apostles continued, and where we need to continue today. In his exhorta‐
tion, Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis reminds us of this call to evangelization: “Anyone who has experienced God’s saving love does not need much time or lengthy training to go out and proclaim that love.” Stewardship
‐discipleship‐evangelization are calls to action, to con‐
tinue Christ’s presence on Earth. Acts 1: 1‐11; Ps 47: 2‐3, 6‐9; Eph 1: 17‐23; Mk 16: 15‐20 San Jaime / San León

We will look at a few papal encyclicals and the “Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.” We will take 3 Monday evenings June 15th, 22nd and 29th from 6:30pm to 9:00pm in the St. James Ministry Center. We should have a lively conversation. Please RSVP atFrLawrenceCJM@StJames‐StLeo.com We accomplish in our lifetime only a fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God’s work. Nothing we do is complete, which is another way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection, no pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes the Church’s mission. No set of goals and objectives in‐
cludes everything. This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water the seeds already planted knowing that they hold future promise. We lay founda‐
tions that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects far beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of libera‐
tion in realizing this. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the worker. We are workers, not master builders, ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not our own. By Bishop Ken Untener of Saginaw (1937‐2004) Proclaim the Gospel Today we celebrate one of the tenets of our creed: that the Lord ascended into heaven. From Mark’s Gospel we hear the final words Jesus spoke to his disciples shortly before he ascended into heaven. Those were words of commissioning, no less real for us today than they were to the disciples then. We are called to “proclaim the gospel to every creature.” For the vast majority of us, this means that we proclaim the gospel by the witness of our everyday lives. Treating others with dignity and respect, providing for those less fortunate than ourselves, being good stewards of the many gifts showered on us, coming together as God’s family in worship and praise—these are all signs that the gospel has taken root in our lives.
