High Plains Community Schools Monthly Forecast ISSUE 3 VOLUME 12 NOVEMBER 2011 FROM THE DESK OF: Supt. Hendricks I was reminded today about our constantly changing world. In all our lives, the day-to-day aspects, even those things we consider routine, adjust and shift with the changing culture. Often the changes are subtle and we barely notice the adjustments. I think we are so use to minor alterations of our work that we don’t even notice them. Then suddenly we consider how much things look different than just a few years before, and we can’t believe we adjusted to such tremendous change. That dawned on me earlier today when I was at a meeting going over a new process for filing for e-rate, the government service that discounts the cost of telecommunications to schools and libraries. The process has changed substantially from the previous year. I thought to myself, “here we go again. Just learn one-way of doing it; then I have to learn another”. Then I laughed at myself realizing this is what our children say everyday. We expect students to be very flexible in how they learn; get use to different teaching styles from a variety of teachers one period after another. Students blend in with an elementary teacher, then go to the next room the following year and make a substantial adjustment to a new teacher. When I look at our High Plains students and the adjustments they make in their learning process because of new technologies, new research, innovations in education, and increased assessments, I sometimes marvel at how flexible they can be and how they adjust. That of course, however, is part of the learning process. That ability to be flexible is as important in their learning as the subject matter. The need for flexibility in your job, as I re-experienced today, is one thing that will never change. It’s good that our students have that opportunity to experience change in the school environment because they will shortly be out into the rest of their lives: a constant cycle of change. HUDSON With the 1st quarter of the 2011-2012 school year in the books I would like to share with you a couple of special honors that we achieved: · Tanner Hannappel was selected as an NSAA Believer and Achiever for his success both in the classroom and as a participant in NSAA activities. Tanner will be recognized in the monthly NSAA magazine and on their monthly poster as well as recognized at an NSAA State Championship event. Tanner is one of 48 students from across the State of Nebraska to be recognized as a Believer and Achiever. · Kendra Samuelson was selected as the MaxPreps/ AVCA Nebraska High School Volleyball Player of the Week for her play during the week of September 19th-25th. MaxPreps is a national high school sports website that features statistics and high school sports coverage from across the nation. · High Plains Communities current 12th grade students finished with the 6th highest average NeSA Mathematics scores in the state of Nebraska and the 4th highest average NeSA Reading scores in the state this past year. In addition, 9th grade students finished with the 15th highest average NeSA Reading scores in the state. These tests were taken in the spring of 2011 as Juniors and 8th graders and consisted of over 300 schools taking each test. Seeing as how it is in the mid-80’s and very windy as I write this it’s hard to believe that colder weather is around the corner but I would like to remind parents and students that colder weather is around the corner. At the Polk site students in both elementary and high school travel between the two buildings many times during the school week. Please make sure that your student has the proper winter clothing. Many people have suggested we build a tunnel or overpass between the buildings, but that’s not going to happen……so dress them warm for their daily travels! As the mid-point of the first semester has passed us by I would like to remind students and parents of the importance of regular attendance in school and communicating with the building offices when a student will not be in school. Please call the office at the start of the school day to inform our staff that your child will not be present in school that day. If your student goes to the doctor it is important that a doctors slip is brought to the office for our record keeping. It is appreciated! I recently attended the Nebraska Administrator’s Technology Conference in Kearney with the purpose of looking towards the future from a technology standpoint. Before the first session started I looked around the room and could clearly see that technology had advanced among administrators within the last year. A room that had been full of laptop users was now dominated by the iPad. Like many principles within the room I feel that the next step is to explore the advantages of technology like the iPad within the classroom. It is clear that technology continues to advance at a pace that is difficult to keep up with and it excites me knowing the technology our students will be using within the next 5 years likely hasn’t been invented yet. Ultimately, at the end of the conference I was more convinced than ever that we are helping prepare our students for the future they are going to live in from a technology side and the future is going to present us with some pretty cool opportunities in the classroom. Monthly Forecast November 2011 NOVEMBER NOTES from Mrs. LeSuer Where did the first quarter go? I have had many people ask me that question and I too can’t believe we are in the 2nd quarter of the year. The fall sport seasons are finished with the football team having a 4-0 season and the volleyball team ending 5-5. MS wrestling practice began on October 24th with the first competition scheduled for November 10th at Clay Center. Girls and boys basketball will also be starting soon with their first games scheduled for December 1st. As we move into the new quarter MS students have been challenged to set goals and monitor progress towards meeting those goals. I would encourage all students to utilize the tools and strategies they have been provided so that we can have a greater percentage of the student body eligible for the December motivation activity. November 11 students at the Clarks site will host a Veteran’s Day program. We would like to encourage veterans and patrons from the three communities to join us for this recognition program. It is scheduled to begin at 9:00 in the gym at Clarks. In addition to our local program, the MS and HS bands will be participating in the Central City Veteran’s Day Parade. Please note that students at the Clarks site will dismiss at 11:40 to allow buses to run regularly scheduled routes and transportation of the bands to the parade. The K-5 Reading incentive program is well under way! Students at the Clarks site participated in a ‘kick-off’ of the event in early October and have been busy reading since then. Students have until December 22nd to reach the goals established by classroom teachers. Parents please encourage your child(ren) to read so that each will reach the goal and be recognized during the recognition event which will be scheduled before dismissing for Christmas vacation. If you have any questions about the number of books or points required, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or myself. With Thanksgiving fast approaching, take time to reflect on what you are thankful for. Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!!! Page 3 Congratulations Kendra Samuelson AVCA Player of the Week I Volleyball coach Kristi Lindburg was informed by letter from MaxPreps that her senior player, Kendra Samuelson, had been selected as the AVCA Player of the Week in the state of Nebraska!! The High School Player of the Week Program is a partnership between the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and CBS MaxPreps, Inc. Each week MaxPreps and the AVCA recognize deserving student-athletes at the high school level who have demonstrated outstanding play on the court throughout the week of competition. Kendra is acknowledged for her outstanding play during the week of September 19th. She played in 7 Games; had 65 Assists/Game; 2 Kills; 15 Digs; and 7 Aces. She was presented her certificate at the home volleyball game on Oct. 11th. How exciting to have one of our Storm Volleyball players selected! There is no better way to make a college decision. You have to be on campus, talk with current students and college instructors, visit the food service, look at the dorm rooms, and just walk the campus. If there is still more than one college on your list, apply to them all. The colleges will not award financial aid or scholarships unless you have been accepted as a student. I recommend seniors try to complete this process before Christmas vacation. FINANCIAL AID PLANNING It is not too early for seniors to begin thinking about financial aid planning for college. There will be financial aid workshops in the area. I will give the locations, times and dates as this information becomes available. EDUCATIONQUEST EducationQuest provides many free services for college-bound students. They will answer specific questions on the FAFSA (Free Application For Federal Student Aid). They provide a free scholarship search for juniors and seniors. They have published The College Prep Handbook for 2011-2012, for 11th and 12th grade students and KnowHow2Go Handbook for 8th, 9th, ad 10th grade students. EducationQuest is a valuable college resource. EducationQuest is usually the provider of FAFSA workshops. It is possible to complete the FAFSA electronically at the EducationQuest site in Kearney, Lincoln, or Omaha. It is necessary to set up an appointment for this. The FAFSA cannot be completed until after January 1, 2012. There are some information you will need to take with you to complete the FAFSA. SCHOLARSHIPS The Horation Alger Scholarship Application is online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships. Deadline: October 30,2011 Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship Applicants must demonstrate scholarship, leadership, and financial need. Deadline: December 2, 2011 College of Hair Design Applicants must attend the College of Hair Design in Lincoln. There is no specific deadline. ASVAB The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery will be administered to the junior class on November 13rd at 8:15 a.m. The test provides a career assessment to help students get an idea of what their career interests are. The test is free and is used to admit students into all branches of the armed services. QUESTIONS If you have any questions, please call me at the school (402-765-3331) or at home (308-946- 3106).
