Last week, Daniel Ortega and the other
presidents of Central America met with the
President of the United States, Barack
Obama in San Jose Costa Rica. President
Ortega said he was there to discuss the fight
against poverty and the war on drugs. Ortega
told the press that poverty is a fundamental
issue shared by the Central American
countries and added that with that fight come
labor, employment, education and health
issue. He proposed that by resolving the
problems of poverty, we create the best
conditions to also combat drug trafficking
and organized crime. He welcomed the
opportunity to discuss these issues with the
President of the United States, Barack
Obama. Along with the President of
Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, was the
Coordinator of the Communication and
Citizenship Council, First Lady Rosario
Murillo as well Presidents from Costa Rica,
Laura Chinchilla (Host), Honduras - Porfirio
Lobo, Guatemala - Otto Perez Molina, El
Salvador - Mauricio Funes, Panama Ricardo Martinelli, The Dominican
Republic - Danilo Medina and the Prime
Minister of Belize - Dean Barrow.
Ave Maria, a famous name in education in
Nicaragua has been acquired by Keiser
University from Florida USA as of July 1st of
this year. The Ave Maria board says it has
considered the best interests of the students
in making this decision to be acquired by a
highly respected international university. As
well as the USA venues, Keiser University (a
private institution) has academic centers in
China, South Korea and Taiwan. Keiser has
about 3,500 employees serving 20,000
students studying in campus as well as online
in other countries
Costa Rica has again delayed the
introduction of fines for those who stay
illegally in the country. The April 23rd
introduction date has been put off until
October. The measures were legally
enforceable since last September but an
executive order has postponed that. The
penalties include fines based on between two
and twelve times the amount of a monthly
base salary. Also, immigration can apply a
monthly fine of $100 per month of overstay
and if this is not paid (or can't be paid) the
penalty is to be denied re-entry for a period
that is three times the period of illegal
residence.

Costa Rica has announced a special period
of legalization for immigrant workers in the
agricultural, domestic and construction
sectors. The move will protect the workers in
relation to labor rights, minimum payment,
hours of work etc. The offer is being made to
people who are already part of the workforce
on farms, in construction and as maids in
Costa Rican households. The special period
will run from June 17th to September 17th.
Among other documents, workers will need
to show that they have been employed since
before December 31st of 2012 and produce a
criminal record check from their country.
The other good news is that once legalized,
they will be able to access the Social
Security Fund (Caja Costarricense de
Seguro Social or CCSS).
Statistics from the CCSS show that a total of
17,809 women work in the domestic worker
sector. Just over half of those, 9,395 are
foreigners. In construction the number is 21,790
foreigners out of a total of 76,177. In agriculture
14.5% or 23,504 workers are foreigners. Note:
Figures come from social security and represent
legally registered workers.
Telefónica, the Spanish organization that
owns Movistar here in Nicaragua has sold
40% of its assets in Guatemala, El Salvador,
Nicaragua and Panama to Corporación
Multi Inversiones (CMI) for a reported 500
million dollars.
The Financial Analysis Unit (UAF by its
acronym in Spanish) of Nicaragua has
identified about 300 businesses that are
required to register with the institution
(under money laundering and other crime
prevention law) by May 15th. The types of
companies are financial institutions,
casinos, parcel delivery services and
remittance companies with assets in excess
of US $ 200,000. The UAF became
operational in September of last year as part
of the government's effort to identify
organized crime.
The Mother's Day National Lottery will
be a massive 12 Million Córdobas and will
be on May 28th. Also, there will be special
sweepstakes and scratch and win games in
honor or Mother's Day. The Instant Scratch
game will have 250 HP computers and HP
laptops as well as prizes of one hundred
thousand Córdobas. This year, ticket will
include a barcode system to ensure the
legality and security of the winners. To win
the 12 Million Córdobas, you would have to
buy all 20 tickets of that particular number
for 1,000 Córdobas. A 20th (minimum
purchase is 50 Córdobas). The scratch and
win tickets are 10 Córdobas each.

La semana pasada, Daniel Ortega y los otros
presidentes de Centroamérica se reunieron
con el presidente de Estados Unidos,
Barack Obama, en San José Costa Rica. El
presidente Ortega dijo que él estaba allí para
discutir la lucha contra la pobreza y la guerra
contra las drogas. Ortega dijo a la prensa que
la pobreza es una cuestión fundamental que
comparten los países de América Central y
ha añadido que con esa lucha viene del
trabajo, el empleo, la educación y la salud en
cuestión. Propuso que para resolver los
problemas de pobreza, creamos las mejores
condiciones para combatir también el tráfico
de drogas y el crimen organizado. Dio la
bienvenida a la oportunidad de discutir estos
temas con el Presidente de los Estados
Unidos, Barack Obama. Junto con el
Presidente de Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, fue
la coordinadora del Consejo de
Comunicación y Ciudadanía, Rosario
Murillo, así como los presidentes de Costa

Ave María, un nombre famoso en la
educación en Nicaragua ha sido adquirida
por la Universidad de Keiser de Florida EE.
UU. a partir del 1 de julio de este año. El
consejo de Ave María dice que ha tenido en
cuenta el mejor interés de los estudiantes en
la toma de esta decisión de ser adquirida por
una universidad internacional altamente
respetada. Además de los lugares de Estados
Unidos, la Universidad de Keiser (una
institución privada) cuenta con centros
académicos en China, Corea del Sur y
Taiwán. Keiser tiene cerca de 3.500
empleados que atienden a 20.000 alumnos
que estudian en el campus, así como en línea
en otros países.
Costa Rica ha retrasado de nuevo la
introducción de sanciones para aquellos que
se quedan en el país ilegalmente. La fecha de
presentación 23 de abril ha sido aplazada
hasta octubre. Las medidas fueron
legalmente exigibles desde el pasado mes de
septiembre, pero una orden ejecutiva las ha
pospuesto. Las sanciones incluyen multas
sobre la base de entre dos y doce veces el
monto de un salario base mensual. Además,
la inmigración puede aplicar una multa
mensual de $ 100 por mes por permanecer

Costa Rica ha anunciado un período

inmigrantes en los sectores agrícola,
doméstico y la construcción. La medida

los derechos laborales, el pago mínimo,
horas de trabajo, etc. La oferta se hace a las
personas que ya forman parte de la fuerza de
trabajo en las explotaciones agrícolas, en la
construcción y en el servicio doméstico en
hogares de Costa Rica. El período especial
se desarrollará del 17 junio hasta 17
septiembre. Entre otros documentos, los
trabajadores tendrán que demostrar que han
sido empleados desde antes del 31 de
diciembre del 2012 y producir una
verificación de antecedentes penales de su
país. La otra buena noticia es que una vez
legalizado, podrán acceder a la Caja de
Seguro Social (Caja Costarricense de
Seguro Social o CCSS).
Las estadísticas de la CCSS que un total de
17.809 mujeres trabajan en el sector de la
trabajadora doméstica. Más de la mitad de ellos,
9.395 son extranjeros. En la construcción el

San Marcos, por un Turismo Sostenible
Sustainable Tourism for San Marcos
El Centro Empresarial Pellas en el marco de una alianza de
colaboración entre la Alcaldía Municipal de San Marcos, el Consejo
Nacional de Hermanamientos Holanda Nicaragua (LBSNN), la
Municipalidad de Helmond y el Instituto Nicaragüense de Turismo
(INTUR), puso en marcha el “Plan de Dinamización Turística
Sostenible de San Marcos”, un proyecto que apuesta a elevar la
actividad turística en esa zona, mediante la reducción de la pobreza,
la generación de empleo, el fortalecimiento y empoderamiento de las
Mipymes Turísticas de San Marcos.
Centro Empresarial Pellas (CEP) as part of a collaborative
partnership between the Municipality of San Marcos, the National
Council for Netherlands-Nicaragua City Partnerships; Netherlands
(LBSNN), the Municipality of Helmond and the Nicaraguan Institute
of Tourism (INTUR), launched the " Sustainable Tourism Promotion
Plan of San Marcos ", a project that is committed to raising tourist
activity in the area, through poverty reduction, employment
generation and the strengthening and empowerment of San Marcos
Tourist MSMEs. (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises).
34 hombres y mujeres del municipio de San Marcos, fueron
seleccionados para participar en el Programa de Formación de
Emprendedores Turísticos de San Marcos, que forma parte de las
actividades del Componente I (Fomento de Empresas
Emprendedoras) del proyecto, y pretende incentivar la conformación
de nuevos emprendimientos que respondan a la demanda y a las
exigencias de los mercados actuales.

como resultado, se han
formulado 24 iniciativas de

técnica que pretende brindar
orientación y apoyo al proceso
de formulación de los planes de

During an mmamania.com interview before the fight, Wesley
Tiffer said about Mayorga "I like to think that he's taking it
seriously, because I have to. I assume that the one that shows up is
going to be the best Mayorga there's ever been". Well Wesley, we
now know the answer to that don't we?

On fight night, Tiffer, “El Roble”, entered the cage looking like
one of Masaya's finest artisans had chiseled him out of one solid

Tiffer. The Costa Rican referee declared Mayorga the winner
instead of what it should have been - a no contest decision due to
the illegal hit.
Mayorga likes being called a “Showman” but in reality its more
“Shock Rock” and that's what he will bring to the MMA. The bad
boy is back and he knows it. I don't know why Mayorga didn't just
pick any MMA event, jump over the chain-link cage (cigarette in
mouth) and start fighting. The MMA organizers would have
probably given him the win!
As Tiffer said in the same mmamania.com interview, “I got out of
one of the major TV networks and there was about 50 people
waiting to see who I was and to take pictures," Tiffer recalled.
"They're not there because of me. They're there because I'm the
guy who is fighting Mayorga”. I happen to be that guy and that's
the case. If you were to put me and someone else, we're not going
to pack a soccer stadium. Mayorga does.”
Wesley Tiffer can be proud he represented himself, San Juan del
Sur, Nicaragua and the sport of MMA in such a professional way.
However, the MMA organizers have a decision to make, how far
do they go in order to fill soccer stadiums?

Como todo lo que vimos en la noche de la pelea (ahora con otras 10

Wesley Tiffer puede estar orgulloso que se representó a sí mismo, a
San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua y el deporte de MMA de una forma tan
profesional. Sin embargo, los organizadores de MMA tienen que
tomar una decisión, ¿hasta dónde llegan con el fin de llenar los
estadios de fútbol?

Some 70 transport operators in San Juan del Sur gathered on May 2nd
at the Civic Center with the aim of choosing members of the new
Municipal Transport Commission (CMT). This committee will have
the task of dealing with areas shared and direct transport services in
all its forms.
Present and running the meeting was a representative from the
Transportation & Infrastructure Commission, Municipal Council,
National Police Transit Chief of Rivas – Commissioner Hodgson, the
new Chief of Police of SJdS - Oscar Cruz, the Municipal INTUR
delegate, José de la Cruz Sánchez, Vice Mayor - Randall Granja and
transport delegate Mr. Francisco Cuendis de MTI.
Erasmo Siezar, taxi driver, said, the forming of the local
transportation commission with local government support is in the
organizational process and is designed to improve the transport sector
in the municipality. He called on individual wheel workers to
“organize”.
José de la Cruz Sánchez explained that this process (the committee)
will facilitate the control of transport and strengthen tourism in the
municipality.
Francisco Cuendis noted that this process shows that there is
willingness to solve transportation problems in the municipality, the

mayo en el centro cívico con el objetivo de elegir una nueva comisión
municipal de transporte, que tendrá la misión de ordenar el servicio
de transporte colectivo y selectivo en todas sus modalidades en la
zona.
Estuvieron presentes y dirigieron en la reunión; la comisión de
infraestructura y transporte, el jefe de Transito de Rivas –
Comisionado Hodgson, el jefe de la policía en el municipio Oscar
Cruz, el delegado de INTUR municipal, José de la Cruz Sánchez, el
Lic. Randall Granja, vice Alcalde, y el delegado de transporte MTI
Lic. Francisco Cuendis.
Erasmo Siezar, taxista, dijo; la conformación de la comisión de
transporte municipal y el apoyo del gobierno local en el proceso de
organización, llevara a mejorar el sector transporte en el municipio,
hizo un llamado a los trabajadores del volante individuales para que
se organicen.
José de la Cruz Sánchez, explico que este proceso va a facilitar el
control del trasporte, además esta comisión viene a fortalecer las
actividades turísticas en el municipio.
Francisco Cuendis, señaló que este proceso demuestra que existe
voluntad para resolver problemas de transporte en el municipio, el
MTI jugará un papel de regulador en la zona, el servicio de transporte
de empresarios extranjeros debe de cumplir con los requisitos que
estipula la ley transporte.

Honduras in 1860.
Enrique José Bolaños Geyer (born on May 13th 1928).
President of Nicaragua from the 10th of January 2002 to the 10th of
January 2007. Bolaños was born in Masaya and received his
education in the United States, graduating from Saint Louis
University in 1962 with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial
Engineering. He served as vice president under Arnoldo Alemán
Constitutionalist Liberal Party (PLC) and on the 4th of November
2001 he won the presidential election and was sworn in as president
on 10 January 2002. Five years later, he was to hand the presidency
over to his longtime political opponent Daniel Ortega.
Dennis Martínez (born on May 14th, 1955) from Granada,
Nicaragua, Dennis Martínez was known as "El Presidente". He was
the first Nicaraguan-born major league player and the first Latin
American pitcher to throw a perfect game when on July 28th, 1991;
he led the Montreal Expos to a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles
Dodgers. He is currently the bullpen coach with the Houston Astros.

William Walker (08 de mayo 1824 - 12 de septiembre 1860). Un
aventurero estadounidense y mercenario que organizó varias
expediciones militares privadas en América Latina, con la intención
de establecer colonias de habla inglés bajo su control personal. Ya en
este tiempo era conocido como 'filibusterismo'. Walker se convirtió
en Presidente de la República de Nicaragua en 1856 y gobernó hasta
1857, cuando fue derrotado por una coalición de ejércitos
centroamericanos (sobre todo de Costa Rica). Fue ejecutado por el
gobierno de Honduras en 1860.

The "Einstein Festival 2013" will be held on the weekend of the
15th and 16th of June 2013 and aims to awaken intellectual
curiosity among the youth and provide tools for critical thinking
and self-learning.
Come and celebrate human potential through the science,
literature and chess competitions open to all school age children.
Trophies and prizes will be awarded to all the winners. We want
to create a valuable youth learning dynamic and elevate the
status of education in the community. The event aims to inspire
young people to be curious about their world and give them tools
to explore and understand. Among the tools are the scientific
methods, critical thinking and strategy methods.
Celebramos el potencial humano atraves de
una competencia de ciencia, literatura y
ajedrez abierto a todos niños de edad escolar.
Trofeos y premios serán repartidos a todos
los ganadores.
Queremos crear una
dinámica de aprendizaje valiosa para la
juventud y elevar el estatus de la educación
