FROM THE PASTOR
This is another one of my columns from past years. This one is from the "Bulletin" newspaper in Bend,
Oregon and was published in May, 2001. I am often asked about good reading material and this gives
some ideas.
Father Faucher ~ Pastor
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------THE CHALLENGE OF TWO VIEWS OF GOD AND LIFE
Two books. The cover of the first shows an intense tattoo-covered young man with rings piercing various facial features. The
second is a smaller book, with just a simple hand uplifted in prayer. Both are written by Protestant ministers, both tell a personal
story, both challenge me to think in new directions. The first is Son of a Preacher Man (Harper, San Francisco, 2001) by Jay
Bakker. The second is The Prayer of Jabez (Multnomah Publishers, Sisters, Oregon, 2000) by Bruce Wilkinson. Bakker subtitles his book "My Search for Grace in the Shadows." Wilkinson’s says, "Breaking Through to the Blessed Life."
Bakker is the son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, the disgraced televangelist and his flamboyant wife. He simply and powerfully tells the story of his pampered and protected childhood, the crash of his father’s scandal, his parents’ divorce, his personal journey into drugs and depression, and his slow climb out of that life and into a ministry to troubled youth. He is scathing
in his description of the Christian Right as he meticulously describes how Jerry Falwell, Jimmy Swaggart and other preachers
betrayed and abandoned his father and his family.
Wilkinson is the founder and president of Walk Through the Bible Ministries, a published author and distinguished lecturer.
He tells the story of his discovery of an obscure member of the tribe of Judah in the First Book of Chronicles (4:9-10) who is
said to be "more honorable than his brothers" and whose prayer God grants. This is Jabez, whose name means "pain," and
whose little tiny prayer has been one of the foundations of Wilkinson’s life for many years.
The prayer is given in a number of different ways in the book and in various translations. In the book it says: "Oh that you
would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that your hand would be with me, and that you would keep me from evil, that I
may not cause pain." This translation is New King James Version. The Jerusalem Bible says, "If you truly bless me you will extend my lands, your hand will be with me, you will keep harm away and my distress will cease."
Wilkinson writes that all we need to do to have true prosperity is pray this prayer, and God will respond with everything we
need. His book tells us how to be blessed, how to ask for more lands, how to accept the hand of God, how to keep from evil.
Part of me responds strongly to Wilkinson’s form of prayer. It is a warm book, a comforting book, a satisfying book. I like his
God and I like the assurance he gives that Jabez had figured something out that we all need to learn, just what button to push
to get God absolutely on our side. Wilkinson’s God loves the prosperous. The author stops just short of manipulation of God.
Bakker’s book has no such warmth. It’s not a particularly well written book, the author’s learning difficulties come through
more than once, even with a good co-author (Linden Gross). It is a little boy’s story of having his world be destroyed and not
knowing how to build a new one. The story doesn’t always make sense, Bakker’s journey is not a straight line, and his search is
not over.
But the power of the book is precisely in its honesty, its simplicity, its ambiguity, its contradictions. Jay Bakker is an innocent
man whose life was nearly destroyed by the people around him, the people who said they loved him, and the people who publicly claimed they loved God. This is a story of sin, not just the sin of his father, but the sin of the underbelly of religion, and the
hypocrisy of religious leaders. Jay was sinned against, and part of his struggle to find God is the struggle to be able to forgive
those who sinned against him. This is what he shares with us.
Bakker unlearns one image of God – one that demands perfection, and comes to know a different God. Bakker’s new God is
patient, understanding, humorous, and likes tattoos and pierced body parts.
There is no room in Wilkinson’s book for what happened to Jay Bakker, and there is no reason in Bakker’s book for the optimism of Wilkinson. I want Wilkinson’s God more than I want Bakker’s God. Wilkinson’s God is the God of the prosperous successful person. Bakker’s God is the God of a sinner in need of a good hug. I want Wilkinson’s God, but I need Bakker’s God.
Wilkinson and his God warm the cockles of my heart. Bakker and his search for God send a chill up my spine. Slowly the
question has been forming in my mind. Is the God Wilkinson is selling and the God Bakker is finding even remotely related to
each other?

Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River is the first public manifestation about the Messianic
identity of Jesus himself, after the Wise Men adored him. That is why the liturgy makes a link between the baptism and the Epiphany, with a chronological leap of nearly thirty years. The child whom the Wise Men worshipped as Messianic King is the one we
see consecrated in the Holy Spirit this weekend at Mass. Jesus goes to the river to open the doors of the true promised land to
human beings: Heaven, eternal life. "The baptism in the Jordan clearly envisions the Messianic ‘style’ of Jesus; he comes as the
'Lamb of God' and accepts and takes away the sins of the world" (John Paul II). So when we ask why Jesus, being clean and
innocent, asked to be baptized, the answer can be found in the fact that Christ wanted to show solidarity with the human race:
He "...has been tested in every way like us, with the exception of sin" (Hebrews 4, 15); or better still, "God made Him carry our
sins which He did not commit, so thus we participate in Jesus himself in the justice and perfection of God" (2 Cor 5, 21).

FESTA ITALIANA!
NFP STRENGTHENS MARRIAGES!
CLASSES START JAN. 19! Natural
Family Planning courses teach married
and engaged couples the scientific
symptom-thermal method of fertility
awareness. NFP calls for shared responsibility by husband and wife, eliminates the use of harmful hormones and chemicals, can be used by
women with irregular or painful cycles (and often improves them),
and helps couples celebrate God's vision of human sexuality.
Through NFP, fertility is viewed as a reality to live, not a problem to
be solved. It is over 99% effective at postponing pregnancy and has
greater success than other interventions at helping couples struggling with infertility. Couples regularly report a rediscovery of God's
plan for married love and a strengthening of their faith. Classes will
be held at St. Al's Family Center from 1-3:30pm, Jan. 19, Feb. 16,
and Mar. 16. To register, go to ccli.org or contact Kim and Kevin Van
Den Wymelenberg at [email protected].

CALLED & GIFTED WEEKEND Pope Francis is encouraging the
Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization
marked by joy. This call to joy encourages us to deepen our faith,
believe in the Gospel message and go forth to proclaim the Gospel.
The Holy Father has called each Catholic to participate. He wants us
to actively help spread the faith by living a holy life and by sharing our
faith at work, in our families and among friends, with confidence and
joy. On January 24 & 25, 2014, Sacred Heart Church, Boise, will offer
a two-day program, the Called & Gifted Weekend. The program
teaches about the role of lay Catholics in the Church's mission to the
world and about the gifts that each of us has been given in order to
fulfill that mission. Call Carol at Sacred Heart (208-344-8311) for
more details or for registration forms, go to www.sacredheartboise.org
