I Love Jenni es real. ExCLuSIVE INTERVIEW: Everybody Loves Jenni Jenni Rivera, the queen of regional Mexican music, talks to us about the second season of her hit reality TV show I Love Jenni on mun2, her music, her movie debut and the ups and downs of being Jenni. What should your fans expect in season 2 of I Love Jenni? I Love Jenni is real. I let the cameras follow me so that the fans can actually see that I’m not just a recording artist. I think it’s very important for my fans to see every aspect of my life. Everybody always thinks it’s about drama but it isn’t. We are a silly, goofy family. How is it having the cameras on you and your family all the time? It was difficult in the beginning, but now that we see the results and we see how happy the viewers are, we are motivated to keep going. So I’ve heard you are preparing a crossover… I don’t think it’s a smart move to leave what put me on the music map, which is banda, but I think it would be interesting to go into other areas such as country. It’s one of my favorite types of music. It is something that may be happening in the future, just for fun. How has your Latino heritage affected your life? I’m very blessed, one, that I was born in the United States and was raised with the Mexican culture and Mexican roots. We couldn’t speak English at home. We had to speak Spanish and listen to Spanish music. i Love Jenni domingos/Sundays, 9pm ET Canal/Ch 887 Has tenido una gran cantidad de altibajos en tu vida. You play María Tonorio in the movie Filly Brown. Tell us about that. I’m an actress by mistake. Filly Brown is just another one of those things where someone else had a bigger vision for me than I had for myself. It’s a very dark role. It was hard to play this person who was the complete opposite of me. When I first saw it at the Sundance Film Festival, I could not believe that I could actually do that work. I’m very proud of myself. How do you balance it all: family, marriage and career? I was always a hustler and on the go. Now I’m in a place where my family comes first. When I’m a 90-year-old lady, I want to say that I raised these beautiful human beings. You’ve had a lot of ups and downs in your life. What is your philosophy? I read somewhere that God is not going to give you more than you can handle. So every time I go through a difficult experience I look for what the lesson is to be learned and have the faith that if I am going through this God thinks I am strong enough to deal with it. No, me encanté. Mexican actress Ana de la Reguera talks exclusively to Nexos Latinos about reprising her role for the second season of the prison drama series Capadocia from HBO Latino.® What do you think about Capadocia? It reflects what is happening in Mexico, what happens in a country with a lot of corruption. Why did you become interested in the role of the main character Lorena Guerra? The series looked very good, very raw, very real. This character has an interesting life journey. I never imagined that Capadocia would be the success that it is. How does Lorena evolve? In the first season she’s the perfect housewife with a perfect life. Then she goes to prison and realizes what she is capable of doing for her family and for herself. In the second season she begins to understand how things work, and what would be the best strategy to attain her goals, to be with her family and escape. Were you afraid of the story line? I was more nervous about the public’s response. But as an actress I was very happy to have a character as complex as Lorena. Has Capadocia changed you in any way? Yes, it changes the way you think, especially about the injustices out there. You realize that the person who committed a crime is usually the product of bad governance, of need, of growing up on the street and not having a good education. Prison isn’t the answer, and it doesn’t reform them, especially in Mexican prisons. Capadocia was broadcast first in Latin America and now in the United States by HBO Latino®. How do you think Mexicans in the US have received the series? I think that Mexicans who live in the United States constantly long for Mexico. I think they like to see their country, hear their language, and see the problematic life lived by their family reflected in this story. Do you find Hollywood roles or Latino roles more intersting? I feel that the best roles for me are in Mexico or in Latin America, but Hollywood has some incredible movies and I have had the opportunity of being able to act in both markets. I keep working in Mexico because there are roles like that of Capadocia and films like Backyard that I don’t want to miss out on. I’m also proud to be able to represent Latinos living here in the US. It is hard for me to find complex roles in the US, but there are some, and I like to work here. There was a lot of energy put into producing this album and we hope the fans will love it. What was your experience with Jennifer López with “Follow the Leader”? Besides our families, the fans inspire us immensely. Your public persona is that of a tough duo. How about off the stage? Off stage we are a lot calmer, we are not “on” as Wisin and Yandel performing on stage but Wisin is still the more assertive one and I am the more laid back one—like in our songs. We are normal guys who have our families which we adore and who provide balance in our lives. muchísimo nuestros fans. 16 NExoS LATINoS | VERANo 2012 Why did you decide to change your image? I would say that the persona of us being tough was more in the past when our lyrics may have been racier. But, over the last 6 years, we have made a conscious effort to change that completely. We now know we are role models to many young kids and we have children ourselves, so the toughness has mellowed out a lot. Watch your favorite Wisin & Yandel videos on Music Choice including their new hit “follow the Leader“ featuring Jennifer López. What made you guys want to sing together? We used to sing separately but about 13 years ago we were at a show in Puerto Rico and were paired up to sing together. The rest, as they say, is history. What is your ultimate dream? We are living our dreams as we never expected to reach the level of success that we have. The next step would be doing some film projects in the future, but that would just be icing on the cake. What do you feel is the formula for your success? The formula is working hard and loving what we do. To never rest and always know we can continue to raise the bar to the next level with each musical production. Merengue superstar Elvis Crespo tells Nexos Latinos all about his latest chart topping album Indestructible. Tell us about your new record. Indestructible is a groundbreaking record. I didn’t allow myself to get caught up in past glories. I let go of that and I set my goal to revamp my music in order to reach the hearts of a new generation. The sounds on my CD are modern and they take into account the urban merengue that young people are dancing to nowadays. I understand that Indestructible symbolizes what your career has been. Could you share what this means with us? A musician’s profession isn’t an easy profession. I’ve had to experience many difficult times, but in spite of that I am still here creating my music. I think that’s how you can transcend as an artist. The musician who manages to transcend has to go through difficult times, because life is not always easy. But the fact that I am still here makes me very grateful to life, to the media, to God, the universe, and my fans. And why did you change your look? My long hair didn’t go with the sound. They were diametrically opposed, and I went searching for a look that actually went with this new record. People have posted photos of kids with that same hairstyle on my Facebook page. Are you happy with what you’ve achieved or do you feel that there are still more things to do? There is still a lot more. I’m not a conformist. I’d like to produce some different projects, and get into acting and writing. I really believe in my experience and my creativity. I have a lot of things to do. I really feel like I’m only beginning. Me falta mucho. Yo no soy un tipo conformista. Me gustaría producir diferentes proyectos, actuar y escribir. Alejandro Blanco Diego Buñuel (No Le Digan a Mi Madre…, NAT GEO Mundo) Mondo for Piperlime. fine design Mondo takes the design world by storm “Personally, I like to change it up; I’m kind of a chameleon.” That’s how MexicanAmerican fashion designer Mondo Guerra, 32, summed up his aesthetic when speaking to Jef Otte from the Denver Westworld News. Mondo designs with the vivacious palette of his Mexican heritage but he also draws upon unhappy experiences for his inspiration. While Mondo competed in Project Runway, his designs left the audiences in tears when he revealed that one of his designs represented his ten years’ battle with HIV—an illness he’d kept secret even from his family! But he made audiences cheer too. In the season finale, Mondo’s design for a spectacular black gown with white dots led to a scuffle between Runway diva Heidi Klum and guest judge Jessica Simpson. Each wanted to add the dress to her personal wardrobe. Since the show ended, each of the ladies has been photographed wearing Mondo Guerra creations. Heidi wore a sleeveless version of the Project Runway gown and Jessica was spotted wearing a Mondo for Piperlime tee-shirt which he launched on World Aids Day. For each of the $50 shirts sold, $20 was donated to amfAR. The effort raised $15,000; it was so successful that Mondo launched two new designs to coincide with Valentine’s Day. As Mondo prepares to branch out, he makes sure to touch base with his roots. A graduate of the Denver School of the Arts, he learned his craft in a unique way. As he says on his blog, lovemondotrasho.com, “I would take clothes I found at Goodwill apart at the seams and resew them. That’s where I learned about patterns.” Recently, he partnered with Goodwill and invited high school students to participate in a competition. Blogged Guerra, “I was truly inspired.” Compra la camiseta de edición limitada de mondo en piperlime.com por $50, y $20 del precio de venta va a la fundación amfAr. www.piperlime.com GO Get Mondo’s limited-edition t-shirt on piperlime.com for $50 and $20 goes to amfAR.
