Dear Cedar Heights Parents and Guardians:
We are off to an excep onal start to the school year! Our students are performing well in classes,
in the hallways, and at lunch; they have tremendous poten al which we as a staff intend to tap! I
have also been impressed with the a*endance at our dances and spor ng events. We had over
300 students at the dance last Friday!
I want to report out on our academic progress. Last year was the first year for Smart Balanced
Assessments (SBA). I was an cipa ng a significant drop in scores over the previous MSP as it
takes me for students and teachers to adapt to a new assessment. I am really excited to report
that our students did very well! Our students out-performed both the district and the state in all
but one incidence. As a school, we will con nue to work towards making sure that ALL of our
students are proficient.

In order to make sure our students have the necessary supports to reach proficiency, we are implemen ng two important programs: AVID and RTI.

What is AVID? AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determina on. It is a school philosophy that focuses on best prac ces in
Wri ng, inquiry, Collabora on, Organiza on, and Reading (WICOR). You will have no ced that our students all have binders and
planners this year! This is the “O” in WICOR! We are working towards making sure all of our students have the organiza onal skills
to be successful. In addi on there is an AVID elec ve class that supports students with skill building and tutor support. This class
targets our “academic middle”- those students with the poten al to go to college given the right supports.
What is RTI? RTI stands for Response to Interven on. We have spent the month of September assessing students reading and wri ng
skills. As we iden fy students who have skill gaps in specific areas, we will pull students 2-3 mes a week out of their elec ve class to
provide different instruc on to address the need. This support is in addi on to me in the core language Arts class. The minute students have the skill mastered, they go back into their elec ve class.
How are we accelera ng students? This year we are offering a number of different classes for high school credit. We want to make
sure students have the opportunity to push themselves academically. Students can earn high school credit for the following classes
this year: Computer Applica ons, 9th grade PE, 9th grade science, Algebra, Geometry, Art Applica ons. We are excited about these
new opportuni es to excel in different ways!
We have a few addi onal informa on items to share to make sure we are all on the same page:
Lock Down Drills: We conducted our first Lock Down Drill. It is important for students to know how to keep themselves safe in a lockdown situa on. It is also important that parents understand their roll in a lock down as well so as not to impede safety responses. In
the event of a lock down, it is important for parents to follow a few simple requests to help keep our students safe:
DO NOT come to the school. (This puts parents in danger and prevents emergency personnel from accessing the campus.)
DO NOT call the school. (Emergency personnel cannot get a hold of the school because of the high volumes of parent calls. Please
do not call the school.)
DO NOT call your student on their cell phone. (Ringing cell phones can give away a student’s loca on. In addi on, high volumes of
cell phone calls overwhelm cell towers and prevent emergency communica ons. Students have been informed that they
are not to call or text during a lock down.)
We understand the importance of communica ng to parents what is happening at the school. In cases of lock down, please:
DO access the KSD Website for informa on;
DO wait for a call from the KSD auto-dialer with updated informa on;
DO monitor your email for communica ons from the school.
It is a priority to maintain your student’s safety. Following the simple requests above will help us keep students safe and allow quick
access to the school by emergency personnel.
Please Update Emergency Contact Informa on! We are having some challenges geGng ahold of parents because incorrect or old contact informa on. We encourage families to go into Family Access via Skyward and update contact informa on. It is VERY important
that we can contact parents in case of an emergency.
Why Can’t I Wear that Skirt?: Staff has been addressing the dress code in a firm and consistent manner in order to create an environment where clothing is not a distrac on. Please make sure that your students are coming to school in clothes suitable for a school
environment. Students cannot wear clothes with drug/alcohol references, bandanas, hats, sun glasses, short-shorts, mini-skirts, sagging jeans, low cut tops, or any other clothing that is distrac ng to the school environment. Students that choose to wear inappropriate ouJits will be required to change.
Why Can’t I Have my Cell Phone Back? Cedar Heights wants to make sure that student learning is not disrupted by electronic devices
like cell phones, i-Pods and MP3 players. If students are caught with electronic devices out during the school day, the item will be
confiscated, logged into the Main Office, and a parent/guardian will need to pick up the device. Please remind students to turn off
their devices as they enter the school house.
The Ac vity Bus is Here! Students who want to get help aLer school from their teachers, par cipate in clubs, or view an athle c event
can now access an ac vity bus on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The bus will leave at 4:20 in front of the school. Students must parcipate in a supervised ac vity, and have a bus pass signed by an adult supervisor, in order to access the bus.
Financial Assistance Available: We have forms in the main office to apply for Free/Reduced lunch. Families who may have hit upon
some hard mes with our present economy are encouraged to fill out an applica on. We want to make sure that all of our students
are fed and thus be*er able to focus in the classroom

Posi ve School Environment: We will begin our work with students on Bullying this month in our Den Time. We will spend defining
for students the difference between “Bullying” and “Middle School Drama”. If you are aware of a bullying or safety situa on, we
want to know about it! Please feel comfortable contac ng our School Safety Officer, Michael Andrews at 253-373-7620. In addi on,
there are Bullying repor ng forms in the main office for both students and parents to report incidences. Together we can ensure
that Cedar Heights is a safe place to learn!

Queridos Cedar Heights padres y tutores:
Hemos tenido un comienzo excepcional para el año escolar! Nuestros estudiantes tienen un buen desempeño en las
clases, en los pasillos y en el almuerzo; tienen un enorme potencial que tenemos como un personal pretendemos
aprovechar! También me han impresionado con la asistencia a nuestros bailes y eventos deportivos. Tuvimos más de 300
estudiantes en el baile el viernes pasado!
Quiero informar sobre nuestro progreso académico. El año pasado fue el primer año para evaluaciones equilibradas inteligentes (SBA). Estaba anticipando una caída significativa en las puntuaciones sobre el MSP anterior ya que toma
tiempo para que los estudiantes y profesores para adaptarse a una nueva evaluación. Estoy muy emocionado de informar que nuestros estudiantes hicieron muy bien! Nuestros estudiantes realizan tanto el distrito y el estado en todas
menos una incidencia. Como escuela, vamos a seguir trabajando para asegurar que todos nuestros estudiantes son competentes.

Con el fin de asegurarnos de que nuestros estudiantes tengan los apoyos necesarios para llegar a la competencia,

This is an opportunity to meet with your student’s teachers! Conferences are held on a drop-in basis; no appointments are
necessary. This format allows for short (2-3 min.) conferences with teachers. For longer concerns, please make an appointment for an extended conference time with your child’s teacher(s). PTSA will also be having a bookfair in our library during
conferences if you would like to do some early holiday shopping! We hope to see you there!

Attendance—Early Dismissal Procedures
If you are picking up your student early from school PLEASE submit a written note for an early dismissal to the Attendance Office no later than 8:35 a.m. on the day of the early dismissal. Students must check out at the attendance window and check back in when they return or they will be considered truant. Please don’t phone in an early
dismissal unless there is no other alternative or it’s an emergency. Calling in early dismissals causes classroom disruptions and interruptions to the instructional time.
AN AUTHORIZED PERSON MUST COME TO THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE, PRESENT ID AND SIGN A STUDENT
OUT FOR ALL EARLY DISMISSALS.
HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Unit
According to Washington law (RCW 28A.230.070), if you wish to excuse your
student from this learning opportunity, you must first review the HIV/AIDS

Important Notice to Parents* and Students:
Truancy Is Prohibited By Law
Washington Law (RCW 28 A.225.010) and Kent School District Policy 3122
require parents to cause their child to attend the public school of the district in which the
child resides. Also, children eight through 17 years of age must attend school for the full
time when school is in session. Any failure to comply with Washington’s Compulsory
School Attendance Law may subject the violator to legal sanctions, including arrest,
confinement, community service, court fines and/or attorney’s fees to be paid by legal guardian/parent(s).
If a student fails to attend school, the school shall notify the parent or guardian.
After two unexcused absences within any month, the school shall schedule a conference to
take steps to eliminate further truancy. Before the fifth unexcused absence in a month the
school district shall either (1) attempt to enter into an attendance agreement with the
student and parent that establishes school attendance requirements, (2) refer the student to a community
truancy board, (3) truancy intervention stay in school program to meet the needs of the students and families, or (4) file a truancy petition with the King County, Superior Court.
The Kent School District is required by law to initiate legal action if an enrolled
student has accumulated seven unexcused absences in a month or 10 unexcused absences
in a school year. The filing of a truancy petition typically commences this action
with the King County Superior Court, Juvenile Division.
An unexcused absence means that a student has failed to attend the majority of
classes in an average school day and that the parent has not informed the school of a valid
basis for the absence within two school days after the absence. The school may refuse to
acknowledge a parental excuse if the absenteeism was unnecessarily prolonged and
potentially harmful to the child’s academic progress.
In the event that the Kent School District initiates a truancy action in superior court, it shall disclose
pertinent information from the student’s educational records to authorized court officials and attorneys.
Also, documentation of attendance violations shall be reported to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Parents have the right to inspect educational records, hire legal counsel to help with truancy petition/truancy court, seek amendment to the records in certain situations, and pursue injunctive relief
to prevent disclosure of educational records.

Washington’s Compulsory School Attendance Law applies to all parents of (1) children six or seven
years old who are enrolled in a public school and (2) children eight years of age through 17 years of age
regardless if enrolled in school.
HIV/AIDS PARENT INFORMATION 2015-16
Washington State law requires that every student receives HIV/AIDS prevention education in
grades 5 through 12. Because this unit covers sensitive topics, Washington State law and Kent
School District policy require that parents are provided with an opportunity to preview these lessons. Our district approach to HIV/AIDS prevention education is intended to strengthen families
and to be supportive of parental responsibility.
HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Unit
According to Washington law (RCW 28A.230.070), if you wish to excuse your student from this
learning opportunity, you must first review the HIV/AIDS materials. You are invited to attend one
of the following Parent Preview drop-in sessions. However, if you do not intend to excuse your student from this unit, you do not need to attend a Parent Preview session on one of the following
dates.

Saturday, October 17, 2015 Meeker Middle School 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
You may come at any time during the designated preview window and should allow at least 30
minutes to thoroughly review the materials. Should you wish to excuse your student from these
lessons after reviewing the materials, you must sign an HIV/AIDS “opt-out” form that will be kept
on file with the district. Excused students will be provided with alternative assignments.
In grades 5 and 6 this unit is taught by the classroom teacher, in middle school it is taught during
health, and in high school, this unit may be taught in Health or during Advisory periods. Instruction
on HIV/AIDS prevention may not begin until at least 30 days after the last Parent Preview session.
In addition to the HIV/AIDS unit our health curriculum in grades 5-12 also includes a Reproductive Health Unit.
You do not need to preview the Reproductive Health materials in order to excuse your student
from this unit. However, if you do wish to review these lessons, please contact the appropriate
teacher or advisor to set up a mutually convenient appointment time. If you wish to excuse your
student from the Reproductive Health unit, please send a written letter of notification directly to
the district office.
