For the first time in many years, this year’s Fallas coincides
with the Maritime Holy Week, thus offering visitors the
perfect opportunity to enjoy two of the city’s most famous
traditions in one trip.
The Maritime Holy Week reflects the city’s close relationship
with the sea. In the 15th century, seamen began to publicly
display their faith in the Passion, Death and Resurrection
of Christ, in the hope that this would provide them with
protection against the dangers of the sea. This unique,
unforgettable festival continues with the same fervour in the
maritime district today. The festival takes place over nine
intense days, starting on Viernes de Dolores on 14th March,
and ending with the jubilant Domingo de Resurrección
(Easter Sunday), when more than 3000 members of the
brotherhoods turn out for a colourful and lively parade
through the streets of this popular neighbourhood.
