"Es necesario un cambio de mentalidad en el Alzheimer"

La enfermedad de Alzheimer no tiene cura y menos aún en las fases en las que
suele diagnosticarse. Pero existen hábitos preventivos útiles y adelantar la
detección de este trastorno, con ayuda de pruebas de imagen específicas, podría
ayudar a retrasar su progresión.
"La enfermedad de Alzheimer nos asusta a todos, como individuos y como
sociedad. Hoy no tiene curación; por eso debemos cambiar nuestra forma de
enfrentarnos a ella. Lo único claro es que si seguimos así vamos a perder", dice
rotundo Jorge Barrio, profesor de Farmacología Médica y Molecular de la
Universidad de California en Los Ángeles (UCLA).
Este especialista argentino con raíces castellanas lleva años investigando cómo
adelantar la detección de la enfermedad de Alzheimer con ayuda de pruebas de
imagen; sobre ello y cómo incidir en la prevención de la enfermedad ha centrado
una conferencia en la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, invitado por el Instituto
Tecnológico PET.

Diabetes, insulin and alzheimer's disease
La importancia de la insulina en la regulación del envejecimiento
corporal se ha establecido por el aumento en la longevidad,
experimentado por los animales, en el que el receptor de insulina
adiposa se ha eliminado genéticamente, o en el que los genes
relacionados con la insulina daf han sido mutados. Nuevas
investigaciones sugieren que, la insulina también hace importantes
contribuciones para el envejecimiento del cerebro y la aparición de
enfermedades neurodegenerativas en ancianos. La insulina desempeña
un papel clave en el conocimiento y otros aspectos de la función normal
del cerebro. El síndrome de resistencia de insulina subyace a
condiciones tales como diabetes mellitus de tipo 2 y la hipertensión, que
se asocian con deterioro cognitivo relacionadas con la edad y la
enfermedad de Alzheimer.
